Title: I WILL HONOR CHRISTMAS IN MY HEART, AND KEEP IT ALL THE YEAR" CRAFTALONG UNSWAP
Post by: Tappanga on December 16, 2004 09:58:17 AM
To prepare for Christmas next year, I'm starting a craftalong unswap so we can all work on crafts throughout the next year. Work on your projects throughout the year, and keep them for Christmas, so you won't be stuck without a gift for aunt Sally. Every month is themed, although you can feel free to subsitute, although it'd be cooler if you didn't.

Here are the themes...

JAN  Scarves/Hats
FEB  Ornaments
MAR Blankets
APR Decopage
MAY Book/Journal
JUN Candles
JUL Bedding (embroider, make pillows, etc.)
AUG Jewelry/Book Thongs
SEP  Jordy/Messenger Bags
OCT  Clothing Iron-On/Stencil/Screen Print/Dye
NOV Soap
DEC Magnets

You must post at least once a month with progress, and pics of your finished projects would be cool, too.

Anyone who wants to join the Craftalong Unswap, email [email protected] . Thanks!

Sign up each month will close on the 15th for that month. Feel free to sign up after the 15th, but you should wait until the beginning of the next month to start crafting.

C'mon peeps! Don't go through this last minute, "I've got 20 scarves left to knit" craziness next year!

If no one actually swaps, why to people have to sign up?

Well, I can't speak for Tappanga, but when I organized my craftalong, it was for accountability purposes.  We all know people (me included) that have every intention of finishing project X, Y,  Z, however, if 40 of their closest craftster friends are there pushing them along, they are far more likely to finish.  For instance, I've been wanting to learn to knit for the last 4 months or so...have I?  No.  Am I going to next month, when 40 other craftsters and I are going to knit scarves....you bettcha!

i'm in too however i don't think i'll be making soap...couldn't their be monthly "themes" like jan: yarn projects Feb: bath stuff March:  paper i dunno.

but eithe way i'm still in! i have a long list of things i want to do for next year (couldn't sleep last night) and want to get started asap even if i'm not "crafting along" with anyone i'd still like to see your projects and gleen some encouragment from you all!

My goal is to have  a lot of the "big stuff" started or finished before April when I'm going to be giving birth to baby number 2!!!

In that case, can we join month by month?  ???

Its a year long, but if you want to do it month to month, that's fine. The only problem is you'll get reminder emails for every month. No big deal, just ignore them.

xkar: Got ya. Thanks!

Why sign up if no one swaps? So I can send you reminder emails. And what 706 said. And just so I know if anyone even cares about this.

abinka: Got ya! Thanks!

jay: I tried to make it as broad as I could without making people think, "Wait, what the hell are we making this month?" As I said in the original post, you can subsitute anything you want. And I've got you down. Thanks!

indigo: You can sign up month to month, but as I said, I'll be sending reminder emails to everyone, so you'll get them all. Just sign up once and I'll have you in, and you can pick what you want to do. No big deal.

Did I forget anyone? ;)

I'm already psyched about this . . . can I combine the blanket and bedding months? I'd like to make a quilt for my adopted cousin from Vietnam . . . like a Sunbonnet Sue quilt but with little girls from different countries, and their flags. I expect that will take longer than a month.

can I make a suggestion? I would move the soap to a later month, I've made lots of soap & though most of it holds up well, sometimes it does not, especially with certain additives. I would also worry about them sitting during the summer months, if it's too humid, the soap can get a little funky.....

Stol: You're right. I've got you. I'm a crackhead, sorry.

Browneyes and Blue4: Gotcha. Thanks!

Idig: Dammit you're right. Okay here's the new schedule...

JAN  Scarves/Hats
FEB  Ornaments
MAR Blankets
APR Decopage
MAY Book/Journal
JUN Candles
JUL Bedding (embroider, make pillows, etc.)
AUG Jewelry/Book Thongs
SEP  Jordy/Messenger Bags
OCT  Clothing Iron-On/Stencil/Screen Print/Dye
NOV Soap
DEC Magnets

Ornaments may not be that great in February, but you can always felt/knit/dough up some ornaments.

Just curious, did any of you get an email from my work account yesterday? I set up to email you, but I don't see it in sent and it's not in my outlook box anymore. Dammit.

Ive got a terminal case of Mondays over here.  :o

Title: OK I'm going to start
Post by: Tappanga on December 27, 2004 10:44:26 AM
I got a jump this weekend because I was waaay bored and needed a distraction from the overwhelming feeling of wanting to murder my family, so I crocheted three scarves in three days. One was for my sister with TLC Amore yarn in Rose color (LOOOOVE this yarn! So easy and so soft!) Only problem I had is my three year old niece kept playing with the skein and made it unravel, which in turn, made my sanity unravel. Then I used two different camouflage yarns to make two manly scarves. I know one was by Red Heart and the other I can't remember. I went to the craft store yesterday and bought four more skeins of yarn (couldn't get TLC Amore because Hobby Lobby is closed on Sundays, dammit). One in a hunter green, one in cranberry, one in beige and the last in lavender. I'm hoping to have four more scarves by the time the ball drops this weekend.

I've told everyone in my family my plan of really busting ass and making things all year and not being bitten by the Christmas rush bug next year, and they all think I'm the smartest thing in the world. Hope you're all getting the same support I am. I'll check in again when my hands are too arthritically gnarled to crochet, which should be soon.

I'm working on this scarf:
http://www.kirtlandyarnbarn.com/patterns/yarnpac.asp?designNo=KP-CTH-BOOK1-GRIND-A
From Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton's Book One.
It's for my Aunt next Christmas. I'll probably do the matching hat too.

I'm having trouble tearing myself away from the sweater I'm making myself.

Well I accomplished my goal... sorta. I only had two done by the time the ball dropped, but I have all four done now. Actually four and a half. I've made the cranberry one, the green one, the lavender one and a purplish one made out of TLC Amore. I'm working on the beige now. I've bought some black yarn (actually a lot of it because it was the "pound of love" yarn) and two skeins of a creme color.

Do we have a thread going in the Swap Gallery yet? or would we want to do it over at the yahoo group (ya...I noticed its set up for only the moderator to post...but that could be changed)...of course if we went that route, then we would have to post pics in the separate photo folder and not directly in our messages (ha!  almost sounds like I might know something - I don't-)

anyhoo...just wanted to say I like our lineup of craftables for the year...thanks for the structure....I need it. of course, with the way I operate, most of the stuff will be givien away as baby shower/birthday gifts throughout the year...or something to that effect.

I don't want to make another thread only because there are three threads out there for this idea. I started one because I was going to do this all by my lonesome and couldn't think of things to make, so I asked for ideas. A few people said I should make it a craftalong, so I started another thread to see if anyone would like to do it. Then I got a few responses and decided to make this thread. If I make one more thread, I'll hate myself forever. ;) I've changed the yahoo group so anyone can post pics or links for ideas there if wanted. If not, you can use this thread.

I know what you mean about the scarves. Sadly three of mine are already claimed and gone. And I received an email from a friend today saying she wanted her scarf now and not December. And my friends wonder why I'm making so many.

On another note, I found this on another thread (a wedding favors thread) and I think I'll have to try to make it in the spring for Christmas. I'm trying to make lots of little things so I can give gift boxes and pick out a few things for each person. Like maybe a scarf, a candle, a book thong and a jordy bag for my friend in ATL. When I read this, I thought it would be really cool to make and add to the pile, and looks ubereasy.

Quote from: lothruin
Oooh, here's an idea.  Molded paper hearts with seeds in them.  When you plant them, the paper degrades and the seeds grow.  Here's a link to instructions on how to make molded paper:
http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/cr_paper_crafts_make_paper/article/0,1789,HGTV_3292_1381658,00.html
Get some wild-flower seeds and add them to the slurry, after the blending but before the pouring.  Instead of getting a deckle and all that hassel, you can use candy or soap molds.  Just fill them to the desired depth and wait till dry.  (This takes longer than the deckle method, because the deckle has a screen, and the water evaporates faster, but it provides you with a thicker end result.)
For a May wedding, I think this would be enchanting.  It's simple and unique, and adds a little beauty to the world rather than one more knicknack to clutter up your friends' homes.  (Not that I don't love knicknacks, mind you.)
[/color]

I asked my friend Stel to help me write a short instruction note for the paper seed pods and this is what she came up with, "Dear potential grower, place this paper mold into dirt. Cover with more dirt, water, but not too much. If you are of pure heart, mind and soul, flowers will bloom. If nothing happens, you are wicked and should reevaluate your direction in life, you plant killer." She was in a feisty mood.  ;D

Glad I'm not the only one who's Christmas gifts seem to be prematurely spoken for.  I've only made 3 hats, a set of fingerless gloves and have started on a scarf, but I don't forsee any of them lasting the week.   A friend made a request for me to make another pair of gloves and scarf to match the hat she claimed.

I'm grrrrowling because my sewing machine bit-it the day AFTER Christmas - guess i overworked that baby. >:(

I do love that seed paper idea.  I don't know much about plants, would the water make them germinate if you go the longer-to-dry mold route?

Yea I've started hiding mine when I'm done. They don't get claimed as easily that way.

I saw a great sewing machine at Hancock Fabrics for $129. If you can't afford that (I couldn't) try shop.goodwill.com There are always some there very cheap.

I'm not sure about the seed mold. I was thinking that as well. I'm going to have to msg Lothruin and ask.

I'm going to get started on my hats this week. I'm making a knitted cloche (the first one might be for me...cough...call it a test hat) and I'm making my bf one out of pretty brown and white organic cotton yarn...pics will be forthcoming.

I hid mine, too, but my husband in a momentary show of support (he doesn't understand my need to make things :-\) hauled my things out when we had company over.

And thanks for the links - I'm in Germany, so goodwill won't ship to me (cheaply) but thank you.

Frogged my scarf (growl)  I was doing the wavy from knitty, but hosed it.  I'll probably try it again later.

It's grey... it's Lionbrand homespun in this dark grey/black color. It's really soft and warm. I've made 2x2 ribbed scarves for others before with different yarns, but I really like the texture the homespun took on in a rib.

I've had to put myself on the scarf making bench for a while because I have a - wait for it - crochet injury. It hurts to use my left arm at all. I made 11 in 12 days so I don't know why I'm surprised. It's a muscle pain in my left forearm, and my shoulder hasn't felt the best in the world either. So I'm taking a few days off and favoring it.  :(

I had that problem just before Christmas, but it was embroidery and my left elbow...I'm a leftie (not that has anything to do with anything other than why it was the left one that hurt and not the right one) and somehow thought it would be easier and faster to embroider a bunch of scarves for gifts instead of knitting them...heh...I was rather wrong.

Just a quick suggestion about a cheap sewing machine.  I've seen quite inexpensive sewing machines advertised at LIDL.  I'm not sure if you have one near where you live, or if it's something they normally carry or just a special item.

Okay, finally posting pics. The first is eight of the scarves I've made...

And one of me wearing a scarf I made for a friend. She wanted it super long. It's doubled up on me and it still comes to my waist...

well i've started knitting a scarf for my son.  it's my first knitting project so it's taking me forever lol.  I bought the stitch and bitch book to learn and it's helping a lot!  I cast on 20 and then i'm doing 14 rows of alternating green and black on  10 1/2 needles.  I'll post a pic when it's done.. i'm only on my 3rd color block lol.  I had to restart a few times!  My problem is I keep forgetting what row i'm on!

ScrappinFool - if you keep forgetting what row you're on, how about going back and looking at how many "ridges" you have in each color block (should be 7 on each side, if I'm thinking about it right...).  that way it doesn't matter if you forget, you just have to count the number of ridges you have for that color so far, and keep going from there!  :)

Don't stress, darling. My first crochet project (an afghan I made my niece last year) I started many times. You'll get the swing of it, then you'll be a knitting fool! ;)

I've ripped so many knitting projects because of this same problem. In fact, it isn't a "real" knitting project for me if I don't rip it apart at least twice!  :D

Here's my progress:
A small baby hat in pink with a mock cable knit for my niece
Two scarves
A ribbed hat for my boyfriend (in progress)
A nice stack of washclothes

I'm not a very fast knitter, so I'll be knitting my projects throughout the year. There are some great ideas from Last Minute Knitted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1584793678/qid=1106264635/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/002-1949673-5201669). And if you don't know already, about.com has a wealth of knitting resources (http://knitting.about.com/).

Also, Michaels is having a sale on boa yarn (sort of like fun fur but a different brand). Those make great fuzzy, trendy looking scarves!

I'll post pictures when I get a digital camera, hopefully this weekend...

Thanks for the ideas everyone:)  I'm knitting it pretty fast now (as fast as one can with a 6 month old lol) and I'm getting excited to see the scarf finally taking shape (it looks like a scarf now instead of a small square piece of something lol).  I finally figured out how to count the stitches thanks everyone for that idea!  I've also figured out that the odd numbered rows are on the "right" side and the even are on the "wrong" side, so if i ever question if it's row 6 or 7, I just look at what side is facing me!  My next project will be knitting on round needles.. boy oh boy ;)

Hey Scrappinfool!

I just have to say I really admire you! I taught myself how to knit over a year ago, and I haven't even attempted knitting alternating rows of colors yet! And that's your first project! I just got over my "fear" of circular needles just this month. It's actually not that hard; you just have to make sure that the first several rows don't get twisted around each other...

Good luck!

Well I'll be truthful. I didn't knit a hat or a scarf in January, because I make hats and scarves to sell, and I knit them ALL THE TIME...so I figured knitted gifts can wait until later...

But I just made my first ornament for February last night...here it is:

Well, I haven't posted here in a while, so I thought I'd update. I've made 26 skull ornaments for a friend for her Christmas tree, plus about 10 ornaments for people on my gift list. They're simple dough ornaments cut with a star cookie cutter, then painted white. I've then painted on what was SUPPOSED to be a holly design (doesn't really look too much like it, tho) and wrote the person's name and 2005 on it with a black sharpie. I need to do more (only have about 1/4 of my list done - if that), but I'm so sick of dough. Here are a few things I've learned...

* If left on the coffee table to dry over night, your dog will eat four of the ornaments then make an editorial comment on the couch.

* If you don't have a rolling pin, a bottle of wine works very nicely in a pinch. (Who the hell bought all the rolling pins at Wal-Mart anyway?!)

* Ten minutes when you're kneading dough seems like an eternity.

* Flour and Salt are SUPER CHEAP and make me happy as far as craft supplies.

* Cleaning up after making these is a bitch.

* Make sure you have a straw for the holes BEFORE you start the ornaments.

I should be getting a new (read: decent) digital camera within the next few weeks, so I'll post pics then.

How are you guys doing?

I bought the darn clear glass ornaments to paint then never did them!  UGH lol.
I made a no sew blanket though.  It's for my 8mo. old.  I'll post a pic shortly!
Next I'm going to make a blanket for a marine using the marine seal blanket panel on one side (hancock fabrics has it) and a complimenting color pattern on the reverse, with his bootcamp graduation pic (printed on fabric) in the center of the reverse side.   Now just to get the fabric lol, I'm busy making hats for a swap i'm in and get everything ready for my daughters dedication St. Patty's day weekend! weeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

So even though i've saved some small lightbulbs to make ornaments out of, i didn't get to it.  Instead I relearned to crochet and made crochet sushi ornaments! i think they're so cute.  and even though it's not ornament month anymore, i'm gonna try to make a few of the crocheted snowflakes with my new skill.

I completely understand. I was just thinking this morning that it's March 4th, and I still have to finish one scarf and several ornaments. So don't feel like you're alone in the boat.

I hear you. As I stated before, I'm already behind. But if you only stick to a few of the months, you are still ahead when December rolls around. (I had to have this pointed out to me by a survey person who visited me a couple of weeks ago.) Don't distress. Not sure if you can use flannel the same as fleece for the no-sew blankets, but I saw that flannel is *DIRT CHEAP* right now at Wal-Mart.

Oooooooooooh I love that! How did you do it?

The instructions are in Martha Stewart's December 2004 Issue of Living. It's really easy...you  basically take a yard of ribbon, and fold it into folds like you were making a paper fan, run a string through and then press the folds and fan them out. Easy! Just takes an assload of ribbon.

So I made this little buggers because they're cheaper. They're modeled after an ancient Christmas ornament that my parents have had since they were married.

i'm glad i'm not the only one falling behind.  i knitted a few things, most of which got claimed, so i'll be knitting scarves all year.....  feb was a bust because i spent too much time agonizing over the "perfect" ornament and got none finished.  now i've partially completed a "nightmare before christmas" themed blanket for my new nephew (whose middle name is Skellington) and i'm on a 3 month vacation without my sewing machine, craft supplies, or room - aaarghhh, i hate living out of luggage, what was i thinking coming home for soo long?  at least knitting needles, crochet hooks and embroidery are travel sized....

Ok, so I haven't quite been doing this for christmas, I kind of decided that most of my christmas crafting should really wait until august to start because i'll be moving twice before now and then.  BUT i have been keeping up with the themes.  I'm finishing up the blanket theme from last month and knitting up a throw blanket as a wedding gift for my cousin.  I'm using the bob & weave pattern from knitty (yes i know it's really supposed to be a large shawl).  And as for Decoupaging, I decoupaged the inside of an old suitcase someone was throwing out.  I used the pictures from a 2004 Alfons Mucha calendar(that someone else was going to recycle), and now i have a fabulous art nouveau themed suitcase to store my yarn stash in!!  So for the next couple months  i'm thinking of these monthly crafts as inspiration/practice for xmas.

I've been making A LOT of paper seed pods for gifts. I don't have a picture right now, but they're heart shaped recycled paper molds with seeds inside that can be planted. As soon as Bellsouth has my home phone service worked out (the bastards) I'll scan pictures.

I'm also working on a tute because it took a few tries to get it right.

They would be good favors! I've seen them in those ads in bridal mags.

I can give you a non-picture tute right now, then supply a better one with pics later. Here goes:

Supplies: Blender (obviously), a heart-shapped soap mold (got mine at Hobby Lobby in the soap section), cheap toilet paper (think of the kind that is a pack of six for a dollar at dollar general), and a can of wildflower seeds (got mine at wally world for three bucks).

Tear off sheets of the toilet paper (at each perf), about seven sheets. Stack them and cut with scissors into strips or small pieces (doesn't matter). Put into blender (with blender off). Repeat until blender is filled with bits of TP (press it down a few times so you can get it good and full). Fill the blender half full of water, place top on and turn onto lowest speed. I leave mine like that for a few minutes (enough to handwash a few dishes), but don't leave the room so you can keep an eye on it. Sprinkle a few of the seeds into each heart mold. Then turn blender off and check. The TP should resemble watery oatmeal. Mine is always a bit too watery so with the blender off, I reach in and grab a handful of goop and squeeze some more water out, then put the mush into the mold. Press with fingers to shape. If you have any extra water in the mold after pressing, drain it out. When you've filled the molds, sprinkle a few more seeds on top. Then place it on a table (or any flat surface out of the way) to dry. I use my dining room table because it gets plenty of air from the AC. In about a week (sometimes less), check. The paper pods should be dry. You may have to seperate some from the edge with a steak knife, but no worries. Pop them out and check them. A few will have sprouted. Just pull the sprouts out gently with your fingers, and then put the molds into a zip bag for storage until ready to use.

Don't forget when you give them to include a note explaining how to use it.

You just drop them in the ground like a seed. The paper disintegrates and the seeds sprout.

I'll post pics of the finished product tonight.

Ha! No but that's what I thought as well for a while. It's almost like a bookmark. Check your local bookstore and they should have some. They are like a leather string with beads at each end that hang out of the ends of the book. They seem pretty simple so I included them as an alternative to book/journal making, if you wanted something faster and easier.

Here's a picture of them I found on the internet:

Ok, so here's a picture of the blanket I made for the blanket month.  I used the bob and weave pattern from knitty and knit it up with chunky wool with blue ribbon woven through.

Unfortunately, I'm behind and totally had to skip July because of moving across the world, but I'll be back on the wagon this month after I get settled into my new apartment.

I bought a bunch of beads to make some book thongs last night.  They're fun to make.  I've never worked with beads before (except for when I was a kid) and I think it might be my new addiction.   :-\  Is that good or bad?  hehe.

I made one book thong that I gave my husband (I'll make more for Christmas...) with a few beads at the end of a strand of ribbon.   I'm working on one that will be all beads (like the picture posted a few posts up) but it's hard considering I have no needle right now and the middle beads are so teensy.

I might end up making some jewelry by the end of the month though, but for now I'm doing book thongs.

Here are a couple book thongs I made. The first one I already gave away. Have I mentioned it's really hard for me to wait until Christmas to give gifts????.It took me about 30 minutes. I found I didn't need to count how many chains. Just how long I wanted it. The second two, (pictured) took 30 minutes for both. I have to say, I love these and I have discovered a new hobby (beads!!)  ;D

My first one.  It took me like five minutes to make this (not counting the time I had to spend trying to get the beads over a frayed ribbon end.  I didn't have a needle or anything special like that.  I bought a few packets of beads from Hobby Lobby and used what ribbon I had...which is why it kinda doesn't match very well.

I wanted at least one more sized bead on there, but Hobby Lobby's bead selection was awful.  It was mostly plastic kid beads in flourescent colors.   I didn't look too much at Michael's because I recently read a post on here about how sparse their bead selection is.  Well....not here.  lol.  Hobby Lobby was half empty and had a lot of colors, but not many styles, and nothing that would count as an accent bead.  The black and white beads I bought were the best I could find.

Anyway.  I too found a new hobby.  I just spent a half hour finding $30 worth of beads I want on the Oriental Trading Company website.       I used to love beads when I was little.  I would pile them all together just so I could separate them.  I didn't ever make necklaces or anything that lasted, I would always take them apart.  I just liked looking at them more than making things.           .......I wonder if I still have those......

I've started on my second bookthong.  I'm doing it w/ seed beeds all through the middle instead of leaving it open.  I hate WalMart, but they've got cheap beads...and they were open at 10pm last night when i needed them. :)   I got 4 different packages of beads for $8.   And some needles, which is why I had to wait until last night to start this new project because of all the tiny beads, I wasn't threading them onto the strand by hand....

Do they make different size beading needles?  They ony had one size at WalMart, and two of my seed beads fit barely, and another I have to force over the threaded end of the needle.  (Some will go easier than others - they're glass so I've broken a few).   I won't have a chance to check at our bead shop (Didn't know we even had one until yesterday) for a couple of days because I have to work.

Okee.  I finished another bookmark.  I had two different brands of seed beads, so some went over the needle easily, the light colored ones didn't...I broke about 10 of them trying to get them to go over.   :-\  but that's okay, the package of them was only 9cents anyway.   ::)

I'm just so surprised that the colors ended up going so well.  I'm usually horrible with colors, and am possibly slightly colorblind (at least I was when I was little).  Especially since I got half of them at Hobby Lobby and the rest at WalMart.  I usually have to hold things right next to each other, think a minute, then ask someone else if they think it matches   :-[   hehe.

Another bookmark.  I've got so many projects going right now I think I'm just going to stick with making a bunch of these.  I want to try out some jewelry designs, but I just don't have time for new stuff anymore!   This one has blue, clear and yellow beads.

I may sign up for this Christmas All Year after this Christmas. No way I could keep up with the projects right now and I have to learn how to crochet and knit. ;)

Chelsea, make your ribbon a little longer then you need.  Use fingernail polish to make your ends more pointy and sturdy.

I joined a little late, so I'm trying to catch up with everyone. Here is:

January:

A little scarf for my baby cousin. She'll be stoked by the jarring combination of yellow and hot pink.

May:

Blank wire bound journals / notebooks. The Pooh one is for my 4 year old cousin to draw in, the two of clubs is for my dad to write his poker scores in.

August:

Octopus (quadropus?) book thong. My first attempt at beading. I'm pretty happy with it. I can't take credit for thinking of it, I once saw a pic of a beaded octopus brooch. The thong bit is supposed to be his ink. This is for January's mother or maybe mine.

I'm feeling better about Christmas already. Now, a bag for my 15 year old cousin...

I found soap the easiest. I bought vellum and melt and pour soup. I printed sarcastic and wonderful quotes (Dorothy Parker and the like) on the vellum in pretty script, cut them to size, melted the soap and poured it into a mold (I used a soap travel case as my mold). I poured it about half way and let it set slightly. Then I placed the vellum face down and poured the rest of the soap on top. Once it set I popped it out (found you can put it in the fridge to set faster).

I also did some without vellum that I made tie-dye. I poured the M&P into the mold without coloring in it, then took the soap coloring and dropped a few drops of each color into different parts of the soap. Made it beautiful.

I was thinking of skipping this month or doing something from another month and substituting, but then I remembered.  My husband loves shirts (he has the entire walk-in closet, three sections - all black t-shirts).  This would be a perfect thing for him.

I think I'm probably going to stencil something, I don't want to get all involved w/ screenprinting right now - so much other stuff going on.  And I don't trust iron-ons.  We had a bad experience a year ago :(  anyway.   Now I just have to think of something he'll like on a shirt. (that he DOESN'T already have  :P)

Soap is easy. Just get a brick of melt and pour. Its like $8 at a craft store. Then you just pour it into a mold. Probably the easiest craft IMO.

I don't know how to knit either, but I know how to crochet. Honestly, to teach myself, last year I got a kids "Learn to crochet" kit and a few things of yarn and started making my niece a blankie. Its the ugliest blankie in the world, but by the time I was done (I made it queen sized so she could have it all her life and it be big enough), I knew how to crochet. That's my best advice. Once you get the hang of it (took me about a week), I was on fire. With the scarves, I was pumping out about one a day. Super easy, super cute, super cheap, super quick.

Did you sign up for the yahoo reminders, or do I need to sign you up?

CHELSEA: There's a thread around here called something like "cool phrases" or something for a shirt. Like 20 pages long. I'd go there. I've found tons of cool things for shirts there.

Honestly, to teach myself, last year I got a kids "Learn to crochet" kit and a few things of yarn and started making my niece a blankie.

that's mainly how i learned to knit - using kids books. they're so much easier to understand - and it's the same techniques. plus, the projects are alot more fun in the kids books. of course, i have 'adult' knitting books too - haha, that makes it sound diiiirty - but my favs are the kids books.

So it's November and I've finally actually made something for this craftalong.  Wooo soap!  This is some citrus kitchen soap from a recipe in Country Living's "Crafting Soap At Home"....it's cold process and has lemon, lime, grapefruit, and orance EOs in it and has been making my kitchen smell really good...I almost don't want to give any of it away.

And for gifts I recommend stenciling for family members and friends for the holidays, just because it's fast and fun! And washclothes with soap.

I've really been neglecting this craftalong.   :P   BUT I have been working on Christmas gifts.  They're all knitted though, so they don't really go with the monthly themes. But I'm really unable to go out and buy anything reallly - so i can't buy soap making supplies.  I have to go with what I have right now.  :(   I do have supplies to make magnets though  ;D  for December.  I love making magnets.

This is what I have going so far though.

Husband - green and red striped scarf.  NOT Christmas colors, but it's a Freddy scarf since I'm unable to knit a sweater just yet  ;)
 - a black ribbed scarf too

Dad - forest green ribbed scarf

Mom - teal, soft furry scarf

Husband's brother and his wife - bookstore giftcards with two of the beaded bookmarks I made

Grandma: a Precious Moments Christmas cross-stitch - she collects them.  I've had this done for a while though. Just needs to be framed.

Other people I have NO idea yet.  But since I'm a slow knitter, this is probably all I'll be able to get done, IF I get all of it done!

I'd like it if a few of the original ideas were kept, maybe moved around so we don't turn around and do magnets in January.  But some are just really great ideas for Christmas gifts.  My favorite ones to keep are Ornaments, Soap, and Candles.

Some more ideas:
Giftwrap: stamping your own wrapping paper or making your own paper, Christmas cards, gift tags, bows and other little embellishments you put on gifts.

Craft Kits: Little gift baskets of what someone would need to learn a craft.  Ideally you design a tutorial or make a little "how-to" book (spin off of the bookmaking/journal idea from last year, but more specific).   Could be for knitting, embroidery, beading, soap making, almost anything.

Food: This will have to be the "december" theme.  You can make your favorite holiday cookie recipe, or whatever kind of food gift you'd like to make.   Or you can give someone handmade recipe cards and decorate a recipe box.  Make a cookbook of your favorite recipes.  Or make a gift out of the ingredients for sugar cookies in Mason jars, that kind of thing.

This could be condensed into the soap theme, but maybe a homemade skincare theme.  Like making your own lotion, facewash, lip balm, etc. (I've never done this, so I don't know what all there is to make, but you get the idea)  Maybe even include knitted/sewn washcloths, face towels, using that netting to make bath puffs.

This may be obvious too, but I think it would be a good idea to start a new thread for 2006.  It'll be a little easier.

I've been slacking off a bit, and doing things in the wrong order.  I didn't really want to do magnets, so I'm going with January's theme and knitting right now.  I'm doing the Hurry up Spring Armwarmers from SNB Nation and a lacey scarf with pockets.

Yea I was planning to start a new thread. And I'm going to switch the crafts/months around as well.

I love your ideas. They also gave me the idea to have alternates as well (because I don't know anyone who would do a craft even if I gave them a kit, so I'd have to do something else that month).

Thanks for the reply. Hope to see you next year!

Just thought I'd give an update to what everyone got this year from me (understand some got store bought gifts in addition to this, and some also got other crafted things along with this, but everyone took home this package)...

In some Christmas-themed lunch type sacks I got at Hobby Lobby for ten cents for a hundred (after Christmas sale score) I put a crocheted scarf, a bag of homemade fudge and a Christmas mix CD (with homemade labels and case). I folded over the top of the bag and hole-punched it, then sealed it with gold ribbon that held on their personalized star dough ornament name tag. Everyone raved about it and was amazed I made everything. I even got more requests for the fudge.

By far the cheapest Christmas I've ever had.

I've got to go out and buy a new camera cord, and then I'll post pictures of the last of the gifts I still have.

I made these pins (instead of magnets) for my daughter's class.  In my scramble, I forgot to take pics of everything else, but there were scarves and hats and a jounal for my mom to put all her groupie goodies in from concerts.

I believe I will have to join this one this year! It's such an interesting idea. I say every year that I'm going to start  now but somehow when time comes it never happens. And since I'm super lazy and still have some of my ornaments not put away yet I thought a few ornaments for what's left of the month would be a good idea. Problem is staying off craftster long enough to get anything done!! I can't be the only one with this problem right?

kellbell: I'd start with April. A craftalong is where you craft items but you don't send them out to anyone. This one is to inspire you to craft all year so you're not busting hump the last few months making gifts for everyone. If you follow this craftalong, when Christmas comes, you should have a good pile of crafted gifts for everyone.

Oh yes, the group for me! Different projects and soap coming up! I already have the ingredients. I am e-mailing you, although I know to wait for the next month.  Looking forward!

I can't post pictures yet, but I finished a few things.  A child's hat and scarf set in this wonderful bright red mohair-like acrylic blend I got on clearance, and a men's scarf in heather green, with a moss stitch border.  I didn't have any patterns or templates, just a vague idea -- and my imagination usually far outstrips my skills -- so it's nice to have such pretty tangible results.

I've got a couple more projects in the works, so hopefully I'll have enough posts to post a picture by the time they're done.

Yippee Brena!

JM2: here's the image:

The brown things are seeds, obviously.

I'll see if I can get to a photo tute of this soon.

was there ever a tute of this? is this plantable paper?

I never made a photo tute of it, but here's what I did.

Things you'll need:
Blender
Cheap toilet paper
Can of sprinkle seeds (I got a can at Wal-Mart for under $3)
Water
Plastic Mold (I used a soap mold from Hobby Lobby)

Get out your blender and toilet paper. Rip pieces of the toilet paper (not exact, but I used about one inch squares) and place in the blender. When the blender is filled with TP (you don't have to compact it), pour in enough water to coat. Repeat until the blender is half filled with wet TP and some water. Put on the top and blend. I would blend mine on high for about five minutes, as I sprinkled a few seeds in each mold (just a few).

Turn the blender off and sprinkle seeds in the paper pulp. Reach in and grab a handful of the glop, squeeze to remove excess water, and push into a mold. Repeat until all molds are filled with paper. Sprinkle a few more seeds on the top, and place somewhere to dry (takes 1-3 days).

When it's dry, the pulp should pull away from the edges. This didn't always happen but you can carefully pry them with a finger nail. Tear off any uneven edges and you're done!

If you have too much water in your pulp when you mold it, you'll be picking out sprouts when you remove them!

Why TP? I've tried almost every other form of paper and none blended well. I bought cheap toilet paper from Dollar General (four rolls for $1) and it worked the best all around.

Sorry about the delay. I haven't been on this site in forever. I'll try again to get a picture tute for this.
