Title: Wall of National Geographic Maps
Post by: Spamtasy on December 14, 2004 08:09:19 PM
I had a collection of National Geographic Maps (too pretty to throw away) and when it came time to decorate our computer room, I thought it would be a great way to display them.  I also found some maps at yard sales.

I selected the biggest map for the center, and then arranged the smaller maps first, and put the biggest map up last.  I used cellulose wallpaper paste to put them up, and then applied three coats of clear water based polyurethane on the top of them.

They wrinkled a bit, but it adds to the look.

If you ever want to take the maps off the wall, will they be really hard to remove?

The secret to getting things off walls is to make sure that you put a high quality primer on the drywall before you paper.  When I take this down, I believe that if I just run some sandpaper over the top to break up the polyurethane (That is where those wrinkles will help), then soak it in a vinegar solution, or wallpaper remover and it will come off.  This is also why I chose cellulose wallpaper paste instead of any other glue to put them up.

very cool -- we did a similar thing in my son's room, using flight charts -- which are basically maps that pilots use.  pilots need to get new ones every year, so they can be had for free if you know where to look.  we used a 50-50 solution of elmer's glue and water, though -- I was hoping that would make removal easier someday...
thanks for the pic-

We have a ton of old charts - maps of the water - my husband is coast guard and collects the old ones rather than see them in the trash! We just made an 8 foot desk in my sons room out of a countertop so this idea popped up at the perfect time. I found a compass switchplate at Target for $6 OR $7... more than I would usually spend, but it will be a perfect accent! Now I just need to find a nautical looking light for the wall.......
Thanks for the great idea!

That is the coolest wall ever, I love maps and flags and what-not. And it's educational too, when I get my own place I'm so going to do this on one of my bedroom walls, great idea!

I too am a map lover and thing this is sweet!!  Less staid than just one big map on a wall.  Feels like your laying them all out to plan your next adventure!

I'm just curious how did you do that? Sorry I'm usually just a lerker, but I was very interested in this.

This looks wicked.  It makes me wish I wasn't renting so that I could wallpaper stuff to my own walls!

acfcheung:

Sort the maps, and leave the biggest one out. Trace in pencil where the big map in the center of the wall would be, so you can work the other maps around that spot.
Start in one corner and worked out from there. If they overlap to the wall or ceiling, trim with and exacto knife.   I turned them at different angles to give a bulletin board effect.  If a gap was made on the wall because of the turning, I had some maps that I cut or tore to fit in those spots.
To apply the maps, dip the map in the celluose walllpaper glue (this glue is clear, and can be mixed thin).  I had a wallpaper trough, but you could use a dishpan.  It is messy, but all cleanable with water while wet.  Once I pressed the map on the wall, I wiped it gently with a sponge several times.  This gets the extra glue off the top of the map.  Be careful you don't wipe too hard.
I let it dry for a day, then put the 3 layers of water-based polyurethane on with a brush.  We used the water-based polyurethane, because it doesn't have fumes.  I hope these instructions help...good luck and send pics!

WOW! I REALLY like that! I had an idea similar to that, by decorating a magazine rack/box out of old maps, but I like the scale of the wall much more! way to go!!!

I really really love this. I'd love to do something like that in my bathroom. I wonder how it would handle the moisture in the air? Ohhhh.... the ideas are flowing as I'm typing..... next to the john in the bathroom, the bottom half of the wall. How exciting.

Oh what a great idea! I LOVE maps. I wonder if they could be dyed so that they look more antique, hmm...

Wow, that's gorgeous. :0)

I once knew an old lady that had a spectacular map wall, but hers was painted. I admired it the first time I was in her flat and she told me that the flat had once belonged to the architect who designed the house and the map was his own addition. Pretty cool. :0)

I wanted to do this with my husband's Nat Geo maps but he wouldn't let me. I put tissue paper on the walls instead.

Very pretty!
I once saw something similar in a magazine, but they did one big map on a smaller wall. I like how you used different maps.
