Title: Gretel beret, anyone?
Post by: cnp71201 on September 18, 2007 01:26:57 PM
I just started Ysolda's Gretel beret, which can be found here:
http://ysolda.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3 (http://ysolda.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3)

It's so lovely! I'm obsessed with berets and slouchy hats right now. I'm knitting the slouchy version in purple Malabrigo, hopefully my one skein will be enough for the whole hat. Anyone want to join me in knitting this gorgeous hat?

I'll join you! I just ordered this pattern. I'll be knitting it in Cascade 220 in a cranberry red.

I love the lattice cables on this hat, and slouchy hats are totally for the win!

Yay! Glad someone will be joining me.

I'm a dummy. I'm confused already. I just did the first round with the cable twist in it. Now it says to "work in pattern as set." Surely I'm not supposed to do another round of cable twists already?

Oh no! My pattern hasn't arrived yet so I can't see what you're talking about  :-[
Maybe try e-mailing Ysolda?

I just bought this pattern!  I love the slouchy version, but I'm not sure what yarn I want to use yet.  I looked at my pattern, and I think what she means by "work in pattern" is to work as the row before the cable row.  That's how I  see it anyway, without having worked the pattern.  Hope that helps, and maybe I will join you all soon!

I just purchased this pattern, but I probably won't get to start on it until next weekend.  I am trying to decide what color I will get the most use out of...and I think I will do the slouchy version.

Well, I figured out the part I was stuck on, but now I'm stuck again. I'm on the last line before you get to the "regular and slouchy only" part, and it says to work to end of round, then k2p2, then you have the new beginning of round. But for me to keep everything in pattern, I would have to p2, k2! I don't know what to do.

I find myself going to Ysolda's site every day to look at the Gretel pattern, but since I don't have my stash yarn with me here at school (and I have a self-imposed NO MORE YARN UNTIL I HAVE A SALARY rule) I'm probably going to wait until I go home to even buy the pattern.  BUT I WANT THIS HAT SO BADLY waaaah.

I just bought it - I couldn't resist. I made the Urchin hat yesterday evening and now I'm trying to decide whether to make a grey Gretel in Rowanspun aran or a purple one in Cash Iroha. Or both.

I just bought the pattern... but I've been drooling over it for a while!  I'll have to go stash-diving to see if there's anything I can use...

Yay, it turned out that was a typo. So I'm back on track and doing great! Should be done before too long!

So it really should be a K2P2 at the end of that row?  What about the first question you came across...did you end up just doing another few rounds of ribbing?

Sorry for all the questions...a friend of mine just started this last night and I'm looking to start it this weekend.  thanks!

Ok, for my first question... I wasn't sure what she meant by "work in pattern as set." It turns out that what that means is that if it looks like you should knit (if the stitch on the last row was knit), then knit. If it looks like you should purl (if the stitch on the last row was purled) then purl. No cabling for this row.

Then for my second question, the pattern said to "k2, p2" at one point in the pattern, where it seemed to me I should p2, k2 or else it would throw off the pattern I already had going. This was a typo, and she is supposed to be fixing this in the pattern - you are really supposed to p2, k2.

Ask all the questions you have... I'm sure someone will answer them if they can. That's what knit-alongs are for!

I missed this knitalong! I will join you!

I started this on Friday in Malabrigo worsted in Emerald. There is a starting picture on my blog so you can see the colour.
I am on the crown decreases now so hope to finish it very soon  :)

I finished mine last night. I've put the pics up on Ravelry, though I hope to get some better ones taken soon. I'll post them here, too, after my class.

That must be GORGEOUS in Malabrigo.  I only have simply soft for mine and I don't even have the pattern yet  :-[.  Maybe once I've made a cheap version, I'll splurge on the Malabrigo.

Here's my Gretel, yall. I haven't blocked it yet. Excuse my crappy camera phone pictures, please! The batteries on my digi cam are dead. Usually I post from Photobucket, but as I already have these on Flickr, I'm going to try using that.

Edited to add that I used 1 skein of Malabrigo in a purple colorway, knit the "slouchy" version, and had a little yarn left over. I did not modify the pattern at all, either... but I did start the ribbing on smaller needles than recommended, I think a 4? I have the hat blocking now.

It is gorgeous! I love that colour and it really suits you!

Mine is drying at the moment as for some crazy reason I decided to block it!

I love that purple colour, it looks great on you :)

As for the k2, p2, error the pattern has been updated, so you should have received the updated pattern via email. If you bought it on or after September the 29th you got the new version anyway. Sorry about that.

Thanks, yall! I loved knitting this pattern and I think I am going to knit a less slouchy version, too. I really like the slouchy version on me now, I guess it just took a little getting used to because I am not in the habit of wearing hats like that... yet. But I think I am going to knit the fitted version next, in maybe pink or green. I can't wait to see more finished Gretels!

The purple looks lovely!  I may have to do another in Malabrigo.  I'm starting mine in a deep shade of Classic Elite Montera.

Beautiful colour, and the style really suits you.  I love your new hair colour too.

I have finished, please excuse the rather dodgy picture, in a rush, self timer, hate having my photo taken!!! The second picture shows the detail. I loved knitting this and the Malabrigo is perfect. I used just under a skein of Emerald.

That's a gorgeous hat! Is that Caron's Simply Soft Shadows yarn?  I love the subtle striping.

Hi, I met someone at an Alpaca Farm last weekend who recommended this site - I have no idea how all of this works (technically how to navigate my way around) so forgive if I post this wrong.  I made my way to this project, and thought the hat was beautiful.  I just ordered the pattern, so I'll try to knit along, though I've never done cables before, so this may take me awhile.  Hopefully by the time it's done I'll have figured out how to post a photo!  Shari

Yep, it is the simply soft shadows. It takes more than 1 skein for the "normal" size, just an fyi if you use this yarn.

will someone help me???  I am on the row where you pfb, k4, pfb to end.  does it really make send to have the four purls together because now you have two at the beginning and two at the end, or should it really end with k4?

Post by: dharmaraell on November 17, 2007 08:37:48 AM
uh, nevermind---i see that i was actually doing (k4, pfb) instead of (pfb, k4, pfb).

I just got the pattern as well. I have a request for one in black, so I'll probaly start in a few days. I'm not sure if it'll be as stunning as a lighter, brighter color, but we'll see...

I finished my first one a week or so ago and I've finally taken some pix.
I used Bernat Satin in Flamingo.

I loved how it turned out and I've started on another one in Paton's Classic Wool Marino
