Details of swap:
For all the tea lovers out there. This is a tea appreciation swap (no coffee, cocoa, etc. as there other swaps with that theme). Crafted items are required and sending tea is expected of course but don't send boring regular old tea bags. This is your chance to share your favorites and try new teas.

Minimum requirements:
1-2 medium items, 3-4 small items or the equivalent
For definitions of small and medium, see https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=6553.0
Discuss with your partner the size of the package so one person doesn't send tons of extras and the other doesn't. Please also check with your postal rules to see if you could send tea if sending international. If you are sending within the U.S. a Delivery Confirmation (DC) is required! Everyone else, save your receipts for proof of sending! I'm very strict about communication; if you're sending late and don't let me know I will put that in your profile. If you don't send within a week after the send date you will receive negative feedback (unless you let me know what's going on).

How does sending tea to someone in the US from someone outside the US work? Will it be snatched up in customs or is it ok to send?

It shouldn't be a problem, it should go through customs just fine.

There's only one good thing about the fact that my boyfriend had to move to another town... I can let crafts take over the flat! I've decided next weekend is my official craft weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to get most of my things done, or at least started, during the weekend.

A question for those of you participating:
How would you feel about getting multiple small bags of tea taken from my "tea stash" together with one bigger bag of bought tea. It would be fun to let my partner sample some of the things I like too I think, but I don't know how people would feel about that. Sending lots of tea is fun, but my tea store only sells 100g or 200g or something like that so I thought I could buy a kind I think my partner would like and then use samples from my favourites as a bonus.

I will of course ask my partner when I get one, but I thought it would be fun to hear what everyone think. Do you have a tea stash at home? I'm not sure how many kinds of tea I've got at the moment actually. I love tea but I don't drink several cups a day so it tends to accumulate.

Annchen, that sounds great! My problem is that I don't have a large tea stash which is why I started this swap (so I have an excuse to buy more). Gives me a chance to try new teas which is always interesting. I'm a tea bag person but wish I had a tea ball steeper (whatever they're called) so I could try loose tea.

We have 15 people!!  :D

I am a HUGE fan of the stash sampler idea. I've been thinking about doing that myself and  know for sure hat I'd love to receive what my partner ranks as their favourite.

So so so psyched for this swap. I might have to schedule time to craft. I think I forgot just how college can overrun everything.

I have a HUGE stash of tea (it is taking over the living room at the moment as it is being catalogued) and love the idea of sending out faves and receiving new tastes.

Can't wait to receive a partner so I can start.

I accidentally killed one of my tea ball steepers... I've discovered that they're great for stuffing herbs and garlic in when I boiled beans to avoid having to pick the slimy herbs from the beans later (I know I could use a fabric pouch instead, but I'm lazy). I guess the surviving one might be a bit garlicky too. Oops... Luckily I have other things to steep my tea in but a ball is nice for one single cup.

The tea stick (http://www.gamilacompany.com/tea/teahome.html) looks like an interesting thing too. Have anyone used something like that?

I'm trying to finish some of my tea so I can free up the good tea tins for other kinds of tea. I recently used up the last of the tea in my painted (by me :) Hmm... I wonder if I've got any glass paint left somewhere...) glass container. It doesn't help that my boy doesn't drink tea anymore, he stopped using everything with caffeine in it to sleep better. Heh... And since I'm pretty easily affected by caffeine I shouldn't drink more than one, maybe two cups a day. Two cups today and I was a bit hyperactive  :-\ I'm a bad tea lover. And I'm still a bit jittery apparently. Sorry bout that.

Luckily they had some roibos at the student union cafe so my third, fourth and fifth cup was caffeine free.

Err... I just took out all our tea and counted roughly 20 kinds :o I didn't know it was that bad since most of it was stacked neatly... Some might be duplicates so I guess I need to try to label everything that's unmarked. We've got several packages of Ceylon tea since my fiance was in Sri Lanka a few years ago and bought as much tea as he could take out of the country legally. They're best before 2006 but should still be drinkable I guess.

Eww... Cherry tea. And the one who bought it doesn't even drink it anymore. Any takers? ;) Or better yet: any suggestions for crafty ways to get rid of it?

I use roleplay meetings and random dinner parties to motivate me to clean and tidy up. One of our friends has threatened to come over and make dinner with me tonight so I better sort through some of the mess. I wonder what my RPG gang would say if they got a surprise tea party next time we meet up... Nah... Unless I could make it a medieval tea party :P

I'm trying to focus my creativity on other things until I get my partners info. They might not like what I'm thinking up or the colours I think are pretty. But I guess it's a good thing I'm trying to find my stashes of craft material in advance...

Medieval Tea Party! I shall add that to the list of potential themed tea parties I have already...such as Sense and sensibilitea (austen tea party) Serenitea (Firefly tea party) etc...
Unfortunately for me my RPG group insist on playing at someone elses house so no motivation there for me...

Really want this swap to start now am in the tea zone :D

Yay! Crafting soon!

I found a real gem when I cleaned out my stash. Lapsang Souchong
from Fortnum and Mason. I'm so lucky my boyfriend is a tea snob. ;D This swap has been great so far, and it haven't started yet. I'm rediscovering tasty teas in our stash :) I tried a green tea that tasted like caramel this morning. Lots of fruits in it I think.

But I shouldn't talk... I think I've found out what my new favourite tea really is. (My parents bought a box of mystery jasmine tea rolled into small balls when they visited China) I saw something similar on the Fortnum and Mason website... Tai Mu Long Zhu 160.00 for 125 g :o

ETA: Hmm... Looks like I'll have to make sure I can stay under the 2 kg limit if I have to send to the US. I can't send food in a package, but if I send it as a "letter" (reasonably flat, under 2kg) I can include food. Tea is food right? ;)

OK - duh question....

the rules say:

"1-2 medium items, 3-4 small items or the equivalent"

does that mean 1or 2 medium AND 3 or 4 small items

or does it mean 1 or 2 medium OR 2 to 4 small???

ok either way, just wanting to clarify what I should be gearing myself up to...

Judging from the previous round I figured it would be AND, but I'm going to talk to my partner and see what s/he thinks and how much s/he wants to make.

I'm so glad this swap took off eventually! I've got some great healing tea ideas for my partner... so there better be something wrong with you whoever you are, so I can send some healing tea to make you better! :)

Disclaimer: I don't usually wish for people to be less than totally healthy... that would just be odd.

Well if we're partners I'll make sure to fake an ailment  ;)

I also have a questions about items: Do items such as cups and teapots, which were popular in the last swap, count as the "1-2 medium items, 3-4 small items "? Or would purchased items be considered extras?

Thanks  :D

Title: Re: Tea Time Swap 2 (SIGNUPS 9/14/07-9/20/07 SENDOUTS 10/15/07)
Post by: Kenners on September 21, 2007 09:21:16 AM
I suppose that depends on how much they cost or how much effort went into decorating/crafting them.

For instance, a brand new teapot would probably count as a large item, whereas a vintage, charity shop one may cost a loo less and thus could be counted as a medium item. Similarly, a bought tea cup may be a medium item, but one thats had some serious crafting go into it would be a large one.

I wouldn't have thought teapots/cups would ever be a small item though, not least because they will push the postage cost up (and they are just generally ace)

Thats my guess anyways

I would say bought items that have had nothing done to them would be counted as extras. They're not crafted, and I thought only crafted items counted for swaps... Or am I just confusing things?

Heh... I've got plenty of ailments but I think I would be a bad Guinea pig since I wouldn't want the herbs to interfere with my regular medicines. I guess it would be ok as long as there were no St. Johns wort in the mix, but not much is known about herbal remedies and their interactions with western medicine. It's interesting... I'm so glad this swap took off eventually! I've got some great healing tea ideas for my partner... so there better be something wrong with you whoever you are, so I can send some healing tea to make you better! :)

Disclaimer: I don't usually wish for people to be less than totally healthy... that would just be odd.

cripes Kenners, I'm an old crone! Of course there are things wrong with me! But I would be so afraid that something of a healing sort would interfere with my meds from the doctor....

though a good cleansing is always good for the system! I TRY to fast for a day and do clear liquids about once every couple of months (which wreaks havok on my brain mind you - those are the days I sound in-co-he-re-ent), so I like something tasty for my clear liquid!

Pharmacognocy is one of my favourite subjects.

Be careful with the St. John's wort. No sure what you're using it for, but my mother had a bad "reaction" to it. I think she was using it to regulate her menopausal symptoms. I don't know if I remember this clearly, but I think it ended up worsening her mood swings. But don't quote me.  ::)

Back to topic: As far as the non-crafted items issue goes, I guess we can always just talk about it with our partners.

Sorry, you misunderstood me. I don't take St. Johns Wort, I just mentioned it since it's known for messing up the metabolism of other drugs.

You're right. Communication is the key, as always.

Don't worry, one of my jobs is in a natural/holistic healing shop, and we are very aware of the negative as well as positive things herbs can do... I'm always very careful about recommending certain herbs, and always like to know if the customer is on any medication, modern western medicine always comes first. If they get ill(er) and I get sued, neither of us will be happy!

It's almost scary how little health professionals know about herbal remedies. I took a course on the subject (plant based drugs) and our teacher told us:
"After this course you'll be among the best educated about herbal medicine in this country."
Eeek! After a five week course. Doctors, nurses and pharmacists need to know more about herbal and alternative medicine since a lot of their patients will use them.

One of my classmates wrote an essay about tea. Very healthy, as if any of you doubted it. It has been used for all kinds of stuff and I think she found a couple of studies that showed how green tea could reduce the risk of cancer.

Muahaha... I've started to collect some odds and ends I'll need to try out a new craft. Perhaps I should take the opportunity to finish one of my WIPs and free up some needles before I start crafting for my partner.

Ronda

Hi Ronda, sorry for such the confusion. It should say 1 to 2 medium items and 3-4 small items or the equivalent. I copied from the old swap so that's my fault. It's also important to talk with your partner on how much to send. As long as you two are in agreement, that's all that matters.

I totally agree with Kenners here. I do feel that the larger items should be crafted but bought items could also count if that's what the recipient asks for. It's pretty hard to make tea pots but decorating them equals crafty! I usually base my item sizes on how much time and effort I spent on them rather than money. However, sending tea could definitely count as some of the smaller items or extras.

Had a lot of classes and meetings today so I couldn't work on matching partners... getting to that very soon. =)

Well if we're partners I'll make sure to fake an ailment  ;)

I also have a questions about items: Do items such as cups and teapots, which were popular in the last swap, count as the "1-2 medium items, 3-4 small items "? Or would purchased items be considered extras?

Thanks  :D

I would say if your partner really wants them and you spent a fair amount of money on them they could count as 1-2 medium items. Otherwise, try to do something crafty with them.  :) Sorry! not a great answer. For this swap though, I wouldn't consider all purchased items to be extras because we're all buying tea and I think that should count towards the 3-4 small items.

I get a lot of new treatments from my boyfriend's mum, she's a natural holistic healer and she likes to practice on me so I'm forever getting new Bach remedies and having various massages. Its not a bad life!

I bet being a tester for herbal teas can have its downside... I know I take feverfew sometimes for migraines, but its one of the most horrible teas ever. Blergh.

I'm meant to be working, but I can asure you, I'm sketching. Its all about looking like you're working while crafting in your head.

Ok - this is going to sound silly, but I ordered a cup for my partner and I am having it shipped direct to her....

I could not find what I wanted anywhere here!

anyway - so when I get the tracking number for that I will get it to partner and moderator, and when I get the rest sent off I will get that tracking number sent too... hope everyone is OK with this, as it would have taken too long to have it shipped to me and then turn around and ship it out again!

I am almost done crafting for this project and I want to send the package when it is ready, not be waiting around for something to arrive!

I'm having another tea-craft weekend this weekend and I've invited my sister to get some company. Her boyfriend might join us, but she said he's only allowed to come if he crafts too ;) I plan to get most of my things, if not all of them, ready and hopefully send next week. I'd prefer to be done before the deadline since I'm pretty busy working with my graduation project (fun!) and my boyfriend will visit the last weekend of crafting. Better be done before that even if he's understanding.

Great idea to have the cup sent to your partner!

About the proof of sending, I'll buy stamps in advance so I'm going to take lots of photos of me packing and mailing it. Does it sound like a plan?

me too - I think that I work on something for such a long time that it starts to look blech! from overexposure

I set it aside and work on something else, then go back later to see if I still think it is blech or not

sometimes I think "wow, that really DID turn out cool" and sometimes I think "uh, do-over" and sometimes I think "I like it but will they?"

I finished all the projects for this swap except one small thing to do and package it up - but I have set it aside to see if it passes the blech test.

and sometimes I think "I like it but will they?"

This is the curse of my swapping (and in  existence. I fret and worry over it so much! This swap especially :(

Don't worry Kenners, I'm pretty easy to please I think ;)

One of my small items is completely done. Two smallish items are done or almost done but I'm still trying to decide if I should work on them some more/add some things. One medium/big item is started but will need some more figuring out before I work more on it. And then there are several ideas in the pipeline, but I might not make them all...

I'm really enjoying this swap. I've been encouraged to try new things and rediscover old crafting techniques I had nearly forgot I knew.

I'm nearly finished too...

good on you for Angeling! I find that fulfilling but even more worrisome - I always want to make the angel package more meaningful because of how much heartache the flaked on party has had to endure!

Rotary cutters are wicked sharp - don't know how you cut your leg, but try getting one of those flat pieces that you can cut on and it self closes (don't know what they are called) - it lets the blade go through but doesn't get all cut up itself - I bought my cutters in a set with a paper cutter, rotary, the protective sheet for cutting on, and some other small blades - as well as scissors - fiskars I think - and have added to it over the years

don't worry - I am always hesitant about sending my package because I never think what I made is good enough, then I overcompensate with little add ins...

This was a very good day for crafting. I found a few nice goodies on my shopping trip earlier today and now I really need to send things out next week. Some of them would never survive the weekend since my boyfriend is coming home. I better send them before that!

Hopefully the tea will be appreciated. I had to buy some tea for me too... It smelled so nice but it wasn't Kenners style so I bought it for me instead. *cough* Tea shops are nearly as dangerous as craft stores.

Most of my finished things passed the "sister test" by the way :D Two small items were removed and two tiny things crafted during the evening. I need to finish my medium/big item and make three more small items and then I think I'm done. Not to mention all the tea samples I need to prepare...

Looks like the rate limiting step for me will be to buy stamps. I've got already the goodies and the padded envelope and LOADS of packing tape ;D All I need is 13 or so stamps... I plan to leave a bit earlier than I usually do tomorrow and see if I can find a place that sells stamps.

So let me tell you about my crappy day (so far) and how it affected my crafting (WARNING: I need to vent a lot)
The weather finally changed today and although i wanted that, i am in complete sun withdrawal and it's not pretty (insert killer headache). Anyways, when the girlies where napping, i thought i should finish one of my projects, i wasn't really feeling it but i really wanted to finish in time. Of course, I MESSED UP, so now i have to rip it up (well only half of it, but still). I am so pissed and it's never going to be ready on time which might annoy me even more (not helping my headache).
I am still going to try to finish this weekend but it's my bf's birthday so crafting time will be seriously reduced.

Sorry about the venting, but i do feel a little better now.

I'm glad you feel a bit better. We all need to vent from time to time... I'm glad I gave myself a deadline before the deadline because I didn't finish in time for it. But... I'll nail the real deadline :)

*bounces up and down*
I'm doooone! I'm finally done! I couldn't resist making a last little thing to add to one of my items, but I'm done.

And this is when my camera decides to die. I'm recharging it as I write but tomorrow this baby is going to be mailed. Wohooo! *dances the "first swap package ever"-dance*

I've never had to complete a craft swap working 6 days a week... its harder than I expected! However, all will be finsihed in time even if I have to pull an all nighter. It will be done. I'm not letting down such a great swap-partner!

I just know the UK postal strikes will make my parcel late though. I haven't received any post in over a week :( I apologise for the delay in advance.

Reminder: Send outs are tomorrow!! Please remember to PM me and your partner when you send and include the DC# if you have one!! Everyone keep your receipts. Take pictures if you have a camera (or borrow a camera) before you send.

Some people have messaged that they are sending late and I have replied. If you can't send by tomorrow, don't forget to let me know or I"ll think you're flaking.  :)

Hi girls,

I've been keeping the your package status on page 1 updated. Please check that it's correct. Some people never messaged me that they received but I went through the gallery and marked what I saw (if your status is correct, don't send me a message). I should be doing feedbacks starting monday. If I forget to do it or you need feedback just message me.

For people who are supposed to "send by the end of the week," you should send by Monday and don't forget to pm me!

I'm loving my teas! =D
