Title: "What do YOU Journal About?!" Ideas thread!
Post by: Jillie on September 04, 2007 10:46:00 PM
I have noticed a lot of people want to start journaling, but don't know where to start/what to write about!
I thought it would be nice to have a thread of "starter ideas" so everyone could compare notes and try new things.  So please post pages from your journals, and maybe do a little explanation!

I'll start...

First off, I'm a "list" person.  I've found I'm more motivated to add to lists every day than to start over each time with a blank page and write a traditional "journal entry" for the day.  So you'll notice most of my pages have a list format, and there are notes for multiple dates on each one.

Here's the cover of my journal.  It is a Large Plain Notebook from Moleskine, I love their papers and the fact that the notebooks stay open when you lay them on a table instead of folding inwards.  I decoupaged the cover with tissue paper at my weekly crafting circle!

First I have "What Did I Learn Today?" It's a page where each day gets a small box, with a few notes in it to jog my memory.  I try to do this every day, but sometimes I forget.  I try not to pressure myself.

To make the nice even boxes, I stick Post-it notes to the page then paint over them.  When you pull off the post-its you will have blank squares where they were.

Sometimes I do four boxes per page...

And sometimes six...

You could of course do more if you have a biggger notebook or smaller post-its.  :)
Whenever I fill up a page, I start a new one at whatever point I am in the book.

Next there is the "Media/Happenstance" page.  I basically fill this out like a calendar, writing in what I did that day, plus all the books/movies/tv/magazines I was exposed to.

When I read/hear a quote that I like, it gets its own page.  That's because I think it belongs in its own context, not mashed in with other stuff going on in my life.

Look at your surroundings!  I like to observe things in nature, and then create something based on them.  Since I'm an architecture student, it's often buildings, furniture, or other man-made things.  For this page, I looked at an oak tree and tried to come up with window designs inspired by it.

This is one I like to call "The Directory of Beautiful Things".   Whenever I see something that strikes me as inspiring, I try to write down some notes about it.

I also like taking notes on interesting books I am reading:

And write short essays on things I am thinking about.

You might notice a weird set of numbers on the bottom of each page... it's a really great way to keep track of things throughout the journal!

For example, here's the numbers from the first "What I Learned" page:

The NUMBER IN THE BOX is the page number.
the NUMBER ON THE LEFT is the previous page on which I wrote about this idea.
The NUMBER ON THE RIGHT is the next page on which I write about this idea.

So, since the left number and the boxed number are both 13, I know that this is the first page of "What I Learned Today".  And since the right number is 19, I know that the next "What I Learned Today" page is!

i have always wanted to commit to journaling everyday, but my problem was that I was overwhelmed by the idea of a blank page waiting to be filled randomly each day--this journaling method is right up my alley! thanks so much for posting this...I really think I can work with this and I just know that journaling will be good for my soul!

Wow. Like so many others I desperately want to journal. I've found my problem is it seeming more like an itinerary that I never want to look at again. That, or I don't feel like anything important happened that day. Anyway, thank you so much for starting this thread! I hope other people will share their ideas too. I feel obligated to contribute something, but I have nothing.   :-\

Yay!!  I am so glad I could help someone!

What I like about this is it is flexible... I can always either add to the lists OR start with a blank page if I want to.  I tried to keep a "traditional" journal for years and finally decided to stop forcing myself into something and just do what comes naturally to me.

I also try not to stress out about writing EVERY day.  If I'm too tired to write, too busy, or even if I just don't have anything to say that day... I don't feel guilty about skipping a day or two.  I'll just write the next day, when something comes to mind.

Please post some pages once you get started, I'd love to see your variations on the idea!  And good luck!

PooHead:  Maybe you could try to aim for writing once a week, or every few days.  When I first started my journal I didn't feel like doing it very often, but after I got some practice I noticed I started writing a lot more.

Title: Re: "What do YOU Journal About?!" Ideas thread!
Post by: poo head on September 05, 2007 12:05:59 AM
Yeah, I think I'll try to write at least once a week to begin with. I love the idea of what I learned today, media section, and book notes section [although I'll actually have to pick up a book again to fill that part]. It's so much easier for me to answer questions than to just write. Maybe I'll do a search for some other journal prompts to work with.

Oh I forgot a few questions I meant to ask you. I was wondering if you do the painting and page labeling all at once before you start to journal, or more as you go. Also I tried to understand your numbering system, but I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. I think I understand the left number and the boxed number, but the right number is what confuses me. How do you know when the next time you will want to write about a specific topic? Or do you go back and write it in after the fact?

Title: Re: "What do YOU Journal About?!" Ideas thread!
Post by: Jillie on September 05, 2007 12:10:39 AM
Usually to start with, I make one "what I learned" page and one media page.  Then I fill in pages with other lists, notes, essays, drawings, etc. as the days go by.  When I fill up one of the "list" pages I start a new one on whatever page happens to be the first one blank.

For the numbering system, I just go back and fill it in after I start the new page.  I may be smart but I'm definitely not psychic  :D
I like to think of the numbers as "go back" and "go forward" hyperlinks for a website, only in the real world.

Edit:  I found a HUGE list of journaling prompts!  They're meant for schoolteachers, so some of them are a bit silly, but many of them are good for people of all ages.

Enjoy!

ooohhh this is completely off topic but poohead I absolutely adore your nickname - I am chuckling to myself as I write - poohead or bozo brain are actually the terms of endearment my BF and I use for each other....yeh don't ask  ::) Anyway sorry for hijacking the thread. Journalling is a grand idea and I may well start it up again.

Thanks for clearing up the numbering system.  ;D Although I was kinda hoping you really were psychic. I think I also might save a few pages in the back of the journal as a bit of an index. Although I probably shouldn't make things too complicated like I usually do. That's the main reason I never finish anything.

estaki: Trying not to further the illegal chatter. Poo head is also a term of endearment between my hubby and me. If you think bozo brain is bad, try slipping w/ banana butt crunch in public.  ;D

Jillie, this is a really beautiful journal - I'm completely in love with it :)

I usually use notebooks to remind myself of things, or jot down addresses, plans, random things I've seen in the streets. I also paste stuff in them: candy wrappers or flyers of shows I like the artwork of. All my calendars and notebooks tend to burst with loose paper. But I'm a sloppy journaler anyway, yours looks so cared for, it makes my notebooks jealous  ;D

Jillie, your journal is gorgeous!

Its realy inspiring  :) I'm glad you shared it with us.

Like a few people have already said, I have lots of trouble writing in a typical journal - I get kind of over awed by a completely blank page. But having little sections for various types of thought is such a good idea!

I think you're gonna be seeing a whole load of journals inspired by yours pretty soon  :D

I love the tree window journal page, that is an adorable idea.

I'm thinking of starting a travel journal, not exactly original but one I can look back on with fondness.

I use the website 43things.com to document goals and ambitions and was thinking of journalling about my progress and achievements.

Wow, I love your journal, Jillie! I've tried traditional journalling before (many times), but I can never stick with it. Having lists that you can add to is a great idea! I've been wanting to keep a visual journal for a while, and I've been told to keep a food/health diary. I'm thinking I could combine both of them, plus record my thoughts and activities in the form of lists.
Thanks for the inspiration! :)

I really like your "what I learned today" section. I think we'd all be better off if we wrote something like that, to remember what we learned, since it's so often forgotten.

i journal almost daily.
I would take a picture, but it's really nothing fascinating. All it is is me rambling on about life in general. How I'm doing, what I'm thinking about, etc.

In my Creative Writing class, we had to write for ten minutes each day and they gave us prompts, such as "The hardest lesson I've ever learned." or something such as that and we'd just write and write and write until the time was up. We then had a chance to read them infront of the class, and we found by the end of the semester that if we start on one subject, we keep writing about the other subjects that run through our heads at the time. The beginning of the paper can be about something as serious as death of a loved one, to ending up being about pizza.

I think if you just start writing, and not think about what you have to write, that you could come up with something you didn't even realize. As crazy as that sounds.

Sorry for my rambling, btw.

I love these ideas.  I'm also a list person....I can't stand writing too much.  I'm more of a typer.  But, you miss out on that old-school journal feel if you keep an online blog.

I'm definitely gonna try some of these things out, thanks so much!

I have a lot of downtime at work so that's where my journal is. Whenever I have some free time and something to say, I'll write something. Its just my thoughts and what's going on in my life. I write in it about once or twice every week or so. I love your ideas. I for sure would like to start up something like that.

This is so clever and pretty!
I like to write down interesting dreams; this makes it easier for me to get started if I haven't written in a while, because I always have some random dream I want to share, and writing down a couple dreams you remember is not as overwhelming as trying to write down everything that's happened. I often find looking back that some of the dreams are sort of reflective of what was going on at the time, despite all the ridiculousness that my brain likes to add.
I also like to stick bits and bobs on the cover like ticket stubs and name tags.

I am SO gonna copy you!  ;)

Seriously, journaling for me is only when I'm feeling sad or angry, so it's not really a good record. Your journal will be something that I'd want to find in my attic 100 yrs from now. So, I think I gonna make a similar journal because this is SUCH a great idea!

I like the tissue paper front, too!

I really like the numbering system.  That would help so much cuz I would always be  flipping through trying to find  the other entries on the same topic.

I also like to list things I am thankful for.

your journal totally inspired me, and starting a journal wasn't even on my mile-long list of things i want to do.
also, my favorite "what did i learn today?" is:

"when the instructions say you need to drill pilot holes- yes, you need to drill pilot holes."  i very much need a daily reminder of thing like that.

I really like your journal system, particularly the "hyperlinks".  I never can find things in my journals!  I gave up trying to do a coherent day-by-day record years ago.  Now they're just a huge mess of random information, thoughts, and bits of cool paper.  I desperately need some kind of organization system.

Does anybody else keep a Bad Day notebook?  I used to keep everything in one journal, but I kept ripping things out, because I don't like leaving my "I had a rotten day" rants for posterity.

Now I save the good journals for things I'd like to see again in future, and if I need to vent, I have a recycled-paper notebook where I can rip the pages out without endangering stuff I'm actually attached to.

I never thought of a bad day journal, but what a good idea.  So much better to vent on paper instead of  ripping someone's head off.  At least you don't have to appologize after, just crumple and pitch!

I love the page number idea - I am such a scrambled writer.  I had separate books for separate things for awhile (lists, quotes, book notes, drawings) until I realized - well my life isn't separate, why should my journals be?  But now my notebooks are a mess and it leaves me frustrated.  This page numbering idea is a must try.  But as I am too much of a perfectionist, an idea to be tried in my next journal.

Thanks for the tips!

Zero cool - I just looked at that website (43things.com) what a great site: book marked!

Also, I wanted to encourage everyone who wants to journal but doesn't know where to start to get a pocket book.  I always have one in my wallet and use it for quotes, shopping lists, to do lists, etc. I feel like I don't have to ill up my journal with mindless things like "buy bread" and phone numbers, stuff like that, but I also often use it as a catalyst for my "home" journal.  I have a friend who lovingly describes his pocket journal as his "brain."

Just a by the way here - but the poem Cosmopolitan Greetings (http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/cosmopolitan-greetings/) is the poem that compelled me to start writing years ago, specifically these lines:
Observe what’s vivid.
Notice what you notice.
Catch yourself thinking.
Vividness is self-selecting.
If we don’t show anyone, we’re free to write anything.

Sorry for blabbing on and on!!!
If we don’t show anyone, we’re free to write anything.

Well it is kind of scary going second after you. My journaling takes many different forms, I like to write as if I was talking to someone, I like to collage journal and to decorate my pages. Here are some samples, sorry a couple of the examples are on another thread.

Here is my journal cover:

I also like to brainstorm for my poetry in a journal. This is a super old example:

It's so pretty and colorful!!  Do you use things you come across in daily life (magazines you read that day, movie tickets, etc), or do you specifically look for pieces for your journal?  I've seen people do both things.

Title: Re: "What do YOU Journal About?!" Ideas thread!
Post by: fairydustwings on September 10, 2007 02:03:45 PM
Thanks.  :) I actually have a basket full of stuff I have collected in swaps from another group, and things I've come across at big lots, etc, in old magazines, off of cards, etc. that I dig through and collage as I feel inspired.  :) It is lots of fun.

Something to add:

My "brain" is my planner. I got it at BN, it's like 8x10, 18 months, has tons of notepages in the back, and maps, conversion charts, etc. It's my baby. It also has a pocket in the back. I take it EVERYWHERE. It stays in my purse when I go out, or in my backpack if i'm at school. I would be lost without it! No joke! The note pages are especially helpful for phone numbers, directions, shopping lists, whatever. People know that I always have it, and it has come in extremely handy more than once. Like one time, we (me, and 3 other interns) had to buy 18 gallons of ice cream, and the labeling on it was in quarts. We were all trying to do math, and then I got out my planner, and used the conversion chart! So funny! I keep reciepts in the back pocket so I can get re-imbursed for stuff. It's pretty handy!

I love it.

I journal in two ways.

1)  I listen to books on Tape while I work on projects and read whenever I find a quiet moment at work or home.  I have always written down those profound words that are both universal truths or are meaningful to aspects of my life.  One such quote is from a Young Adult book called Letters from the Indside:

"So letters in my life are like sunflowers in Alaska"  I'm writing and illustrating my reaction to that phrase at the moment.  I'm including a story about an old boyfriend long ago who stopped on the side of the road - ran out to a field and picked me a sunflower...and I'm also collaging his letters within my journal.  I look to these phrases that I have compiled since my high school lit classes.  I've found I'm much more compassionate with myself when I journal.  When I'm finished with my page I'll post a picture.

2)  I live in a pretty industrial kind of town, with a small art and music scene.  When I travel to larger cities I find all of even post cards and take them home for my journal.  Knowing nothing about the events - I make up my own versions of things that went on that night.  This is crazy fun journaling!

Well Jillie I FINALLY got around to taking pics of my journal inspired by you. I have another journal which is more like a regular style one and another craft book where I put patterns and ideas for things I'd like to do in the future as well as keeping track of all the projects I have on the go. With Christmas approaching they can get out of control!!  Anyhoo, now I have this one like I said...inspired by you. I took some of your ideas and added some. But I love your paging system so I stole that too!! ;)

What a fun journal!!  It looks like you put a lot of time and effort into it!

One thing that I wanted to share is that I've started to put concert info down in my journal, too.  Band, best songs the played, general impressions, crazy fans, best moments, etc.  Since I've moved to a larger city, I see so many and I like to have a distinct memory of each.

I was so inspired that I spent the better part of today working on this  :D  I saw this as a great excuse to play with my markers, so most of the pages are decorated with markers and colored pencils.  I also love lists so most of my pages are list oriented.

i am... (a list of positive things about myself - first page of the journal) / what did I learn today?

media/happenstance / things that make me smile

today i feel... / raindrops keep falling on my head... today's weather

i'm thankful for... / random facts

proof that i need my gym membership... / to do: crafts

Some of the other pages I don't have pictures for include
- goals
- things i hate
- i has a question (random questions)
- quotes
- i want to learn...
- currently listening to
- reading log
- vocab (i love learning new words!)

I just started yesterday so the pages are still pretty empty but I am really excited to see what this will turn into!  ;D

Wow, all your journals are beautiful.  ;D

I keep a normal journal (what I did today...), just a spiral. I have a Moleskine, which I loved, but, unfortunately, wrote all about my ex-boyfriend in it, so now I can't really stand to write in it. I'm asking for some new ones for my birthday.

I think I'm going to use some of your ideas, though. Make a new journal with lists and stuff. I love lists.  ;D I don't have time tonight, but I'll definitly work on it tomorrow!

I love the colours of your pages and that everything is already done and you just have to write in what you want.

Okay this is embarrasing as all hell. Apparently ppl have complained about the random question on my "Random Questions" page. RIM stands for Research In Motion where I've been working as a temp for the past year trying to get hired on. I've never even heard of whatever its alterior meaning is so I apologize and will remove the photo.

Hello!
I keep some lists in my journals and also collect quotes and things. I tend to do lots of "visual journaling" as well. That means that I use drawings and cut outs to show things, rather than simply lots of words.  Here are some pages from my wee Moleskine sketchbook journal. I carry it with me pretty much everywhere. (I have other journals that stay at home and are for different types of things.)

I don't necessarily use the pages in order, and try to put thematically related things near each other. The pages are listed here in the order in the book.

I don't know how legible this is, but it talks about some funny street names in my town.

Here is a list of things that I really like.

Here are some things that make me angry.

Here is a page about a really good salad I had when I was walking around my city, by myself.

Here is a quote I like by May Sarton, about eating alone.

Here is a page about a wreck I was in last week. (I'm okay but the car is totaled.) I drew a picture and then wrote a description on top.

Here is a list of songs I really like. I listen to this internet radio station called Pandora (www.Pandora.com (http://www.Pandora.com)) and found most of them there.

Here are random scraps I've pasted in. There are a few fortunes from cookies, interesting tags and an entry bracelet.

This is the first page of my section about a conference I went to. I pasted in images from the cover of the booklet they gave us. For the other pages I wrote a rough schedule and talked in detail about the workshops and things I attended.

Here are some quite random doodles.

I went nuts with my letter stamps here, talking about a class I hate. There's also a good quote by Leonardo daVinci, "Study without desire spoils the desire and it retains nothing that it takes in."

Here are some ideas for a tattoo I'm thinking about getting.

Finally, here is a collage cum quote. The quote is, "A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle." Gloria Steinem said it.

Whew! That was pretty long. I took some of the ideas from this thread and hopefully some of you will be able to get something from this messy book of mine.

Wow! Thanks for sharing your Visual Journal- I am always looking for inspiration as I am just 'transitioning' from a purely written journal. It is so much more fun doing visual entries, that you really WANT to do them every day, or sometimes even more often!!

Thats a great idea, mind if i steal I mean borrow (evil grin) the idea about what I learned today i'm always looking for new ideas for my journal.

My journal is just a hard cover sketch book the first page doesn't say "journal" or anything like that it say's "Life, or something like it"

I also am "borrowing" some of the ideas here. I always buy beautiful books, and then get too scared to write in them, for fear what I write will be pointless. Now, I have headings to keep me on track. I'll post pictures when it's done.

Zero Cool: I have been to the UK and actually really want to move to Edinburgh. I pick up accents and speech patterns really easily and made that page right after reading Trainspotting, which is written in a strong Scottish/Leith accent/dialect.

lil_black_rose: Some people who have perfectionist tendencies keep one journal that's for lots of planning and another that's for on the cuff stuff. (If that sentence even makes sense.) You could try that to see if it helps you be more spontaneous.

If any one is interesting in visual journalling, they should check out the livejournal community jr__nal. (http://community.livejournal.com/jr__nal/ (http://community.livejournal.com/jr__nal/)) People post pics of their journals and whatever. It is often really inspiring but is definitely not dial-up friendly!

There are so many awesome ideas here. I love to journal as well. I think I will be 'borrowing' ideas too  ;D

When I write little lists for the day I try to put them in my journal when I write in it.

I also put lots of little bits and pieces. Pictures I like or find. Any little sweet notes I receive, cute stickers, bits of pretty paper I can't bear to throw away  ;D

Another thing I do is my mood of the day so if I read it back I will unterstand the contex in which it was written.

There are some awesome journals here!!

I have noticed that lots of people use the 'Dover Books' site for embroidery patterns- they are a great source for visual journals too- they send you free samples that you can print out and use! I love them!
I choose a picture that appeals to me for whatever reason on that particular day, and then sometimes I write about it, or sometimes I choose a colouring in picture and colour it, paint it, modify it- whatever. It is a lot of fun!

Great thread! Thanks for sharing your excellent ideas. I am also a compulsive list maker, although I've never done it in my journal. Definitely will use some of your techniques, especially the numbering system. Awesome!

Also I thought I'd contribute: I keep a special notebook for websites. I'm almost ready for a new journal though, so I'll be incorporating a website list into the new journal. I usually write the date, web address, a category (shop, craft, entertainment, etc), thoughts/notes, and username/password if I've signed up. ;)  That notebook is insanely handy!

So. Lately in Journalism, we've been talking a lot about Dan Eldon. If you haven't heard of him, he was a photojournalist killed by a mob in Somolia (I think) in 1993. Anyway, one of the things we heard a lot about in the videos and stuff about him was his journals. They were like art journals, I guess, but they were gorgeous. They've really inspired me, and I'm sure they would do the same for all you guys. You can look through them here: http://www.daneldon.org/journals/index.html

I like the date stamp - that's clever!

I am a super-linear/sequential/concrete gal.  I wouldn't know creativity if it bit me; I can just copy. lol  So I have a really hard time keeping a good visual journal.  I never know what to do with it, and it drives me crazy not to just have one thing follow the last, neatly.  So... to solve the last problem, here's what I decided to do.  I keep a typed journal in Microsoft Word.  (I write more that way, anyhow, as I can type much faster than I can write.)  It is just a plain old, boring, one-date-follows-the-last this-is-what-happened kind of thing. (Although I usually forget to write until I'm having a crappy day, so I really should try the "bad day" journal idea, too.  I fear that if I died, my husband would think I had secretly hated him, because the journal would really paint a warped picture!)  Anyway, so I type in this journal all year.  At the end of the year, I add in any other relevant information (I also put together a summary of each month at the beginning of the next month, and I add these.), etc., put together a cover picture that's a photo collage of the past year, and have it printed at Lulu.com.

Then I can keep a separate paper journal where I can try different things, use pages out of order, tape stuff in, etc. - just generally get creative - and I am not so insecure about my journal because I have the "safe" one on the computer. ;)

That's cool that you go through that entire process though. I bet not many ppl have yearbooks of their life like that.

I know what you mean about not having any visual images. I have to TRY to do that and its crap at best. As long as I enjoy going back and looking over what I was thinking...I'm cool with it. I also have multiple journals too. I think we need them for the multitude of personas that are within each of us.

Thought I'd scan a few more pages to share  :)

I love to build things.  When I come up with a concept for something new, it gets sketched out on a page.  This is a steampunk-inspired lamp.

Here's a completed "Directory of Beautiful Things" page.  I try to write these down whenever I see them, but sometimes there's just too many to record.  I'm available for handwriting translation  ;)

If I'm short on creativity but think something might be useful later, I'll draw/trace it.

Taking a few notes on a building concept

That's all for now.

This truly is a fantastic thread!

It seems I have always kept a journal as my shelves in my art room are lined with books that look like a mess due to all the "stuff" in them spilling out.

It is overwhelming for some to look at the blank page not to mention feeling as though the journal should somehow look perfect.
I often use something I hear a person saying as my journal prompt.
Ex: the Florida student "Don't taze me, bro" was one prompt I could not pass up. Or a friend simply saying, "Ohhhh yeah" or "Ohhhh, hell NO".  I will write this on the top page and go from there.

One thing I do often is tear out pictures in magazines or advertisements that grab my attention for some reason and I glue that down and the actual writing begins from there.

Since becoming sick with Multiple Sclerosis I also started a health journal I take with me to my doctor's appointments.  I glue down research I may have found, highlight the areas of interest so I can discuss with my doctor, I use one page to list new meds I have started and the type of side fx I may have or if the med actually helps me.

I also list questions in one color ink I have for the doc and take a different color pen with me to record his answers.

LOL there are times my neuro will see a page as I am flipping through and ask me WHAT is that because I also journal about what it feels like to live with MS and some of the visuals wellll, let's say are eye opening for the doc to know a patient feels this way.
I have to inject medicine 3x a week so when I start a new box of injections I tear off the label and glue it in the journal where I write the dates in which I used that one particular box, recording the lot # etc SO if there is ever a recall or issue with the forumlation of that injectible I have a record I have used that particular lot #.

The labels are glued behind the page of the picture I took after piling up a years worth of syringes!! LMAO...the doc thought that a bit disturbing and I asked why, because I took a pic of all the syringes OR the fact that this is what a years worth of my injectible meds look like? :o

Jillie your handwriting looks so pretty!!

These are all excellent (sp?) ideas.

When I write in my journal, I usually write about my day, or my plans for the day, or some memory. Two weeks ago I started adding pictures and scraps from magazines, and it's getting more exciting. I find it difficult to create a visual, though. I'm afraid I'll spoil the page, or that I only have a ballpoint pen and it won't look colorful, or something like that.

Your journals are all very inspiring.  :D

I have this pair of pages (they go together; left-right), inspired by something, I'm sure, but I can't remember what. :(  Some time management book, probably. lol  (Those have actually been some of my greatest journaling inspirations.)

And this one, which shows how I used colored pencil to highlight a few things just to add a tad bit of color.  (The color is kind of flaky in the pictures; they didn't scan great, and I tried to tweak them so you could at least SEE the color!)

I also have some notes from The Decorated Page, which I will upload in another post.

Also, I used Jillie's suggestion about the post-it's, and I did two pages - a purple one and a green one - using the same sticky notes, and I ended up with these super-cool-looking sticky notes.  :)  I am keeping them.  hehe I have never been able to get this kind of edge effect for scrapbooking when I've tried, so I think that next time I might use scraps of cardstock and a post-it glue stick and see if perhaps I can end up with some scrapbooking/cardmaking pieces as byproducts. ;)

(One of the post-it's was already written on; that's why it isn't in the picture, in case anyone was curious.)

My notes from The Decorated Page.  (By the way, don't anyone be deceived.  I have just uploaded every interesting page in my journal! lol  The rest of it is pretty boring - just straightforward writing about what has recently happened and/or how I'm feeling.)

Title: Re: "What do YOU Journal About?!" Ideas thread!
Post by: A2JC4life on November 10, 2007 03:23:05 PM
Not to hog the thread, but I just realized that I forgot to post the part I meant to that actually addresses the original question.   ::)

I have in my current journal, in addition to the "Fun for Me" list I posted pictures of, and all of the boring pages ;) ; a list of ten "Things that Irk Me" (the intent being to then go back and come up with a plan to fix as many of them as possible); a description of my "ideal day" (that was an "assignment from somewhere, to, but I don't recall where); lists of things that are good for me and bad for me, and "energy robbers"; notes about a couple rooms in my house - what they're used for, what they need, etc.; a list of "things I want to study"; book notes; a list of things with "right brain appeal" (because I really need to work on this!); and a list of "things I'd like to do, but never get around to.  I have a couple of comics pasted in that I really liked.

I also found several journaling ideas in another time management book I recently read (they weren't given specifically as journaling prompts, but that's where they came from): to make a poem out of your to-do list, and "If your life were made into a movie, what would it be called?"

If this doesn't get lost in the midst of my crazy post, here's an idea...  What if everyone thinks up five journaling prompts - could be a theme, a question, the beginning of a sentence, etc. - and posts them here.  If there are enough of us reading the thread, that could be a lot of journaling prompts for not much thinking per person.

Title: Re: "What do YOU Journal About?!" Ideas thread!
Post by: cassette. on November 10, 2007 04:08:16 PM
there's always the random paragraph generator. just google it, and you'll understand. :D but that sounds like a really good idea.

I'll start ... get out old lots of photographs. find the ones that didn't come out properly - blurred, obscured, or taken by accident (I'm a photographer, and even I have ones of my feet sometimes)... then write over them or about them. draw the rest of the image where it's obscured. draw new things on top of old things. paint. burn. (be careful, as an addition to the "burn" suggestion.). I did a series of portraits like this.

In other news... went out looking for a new sketchbook today. sketchbooks basically become journals for me. I draw in them, write in them, stick in my photographs, collage, make lists... etc... etc... and I much prefer to claim an old book of kids' stories (or something with thick enough pages to draw on) than spending too much money on something new. Sort of like altered books, but I save parts of them that I like. Well, anyway, browsing the second-hand tomes I discovered a signed copy of a book called "The Anatomy of Society", from 1919... it smelt wonderful... though it turns out, as I flick through the book, that the author (a one Gilbert Cannan)... a) hated the Jewish with a mad passion; and b) liked women, but thought they had no brains, only vanity. what a pleasant man. don't know if I'll journalise this one. ... maybe just stash it away for posterity.

and erm, yeah. guess I'll drop back into this thread when I have something more valuable (and less rambling) to say (or show?). ::)

cassette.

This thread is amazing!

I've been such an avid journaler for years now.  I've always kept it traditional...one book, tons of random things.

However, I always say I'm going to make my journal for the next year and this year I'm actually going to follow up with it for 2008.  I'm TOTALLY stealing some ideas from you guys, too!  ;D

What I want to do is use a few paper bags and make a giant accordion-like folder...?  And inside, I want to insert tons of file folders.  The file folders will be decorated according to the titles.  Each titled:

-I am...
-What I learned today
-Media, Happenstance
-Things that make me smile
-Today, I feel...
-I'm thankful for...
-Random facts/observations
-To Do/Goals (short and long term)
-Questions
-Inspiration
-Random thoughts
-College (I'm in school and feel it's important to record stuff that happens in class, etc.)
-Art pages (magazine clippings, pictures, etc.)
-Quotes/lyrics (I'm a musician, so music is important)
-Moments to remember (add ticket stubs, wrappers, etc)
-Calendar for the month with plans...fill in as I go through the month
-I wonder...
-Directory of beautiful things (pictures, thoughts, whatever)
-Letter section (the stuff I want to say to someone but don't)
-Topic writing (I'm a writer and like to do my own workshops sometimes)

I might include sections for like family and friends and combine a few sections.

I tried using a separate notebook for all different things once but it didn't work out too well. With this journal, I want to decorate the entire accordion thing in all different ways and keep to all of these random things.

Thanks for the amazing ideas, guys!  I'll be sure to post some pictures with my progress.

I love seeing everyone's journal pages!

I don't have any pictures of my journal pages, but I keep 3 different journals.  The first is just a regular personal journal- nothing fancy, just writing whenever I feel the need to write.  I also have a nature journal, with weather observations, bird-watching notes, stories of outdoor adventures, and occasional sketches.  Lastly I have an art journal, which is one of the little tiny Moleskine sketchbooks, because I decided I needed small pages so that filling them up wouldn't be too overwhelming or time consuming.

All of my journals are kind of neglected right now...
I like the idea of having different sections in one journal, rather than different books, but I'm not sure it would work out for me (plus, my art journal and nature journal are for others to see as well as for myself, but my personal journal is...well, personal).  I used to put more effort into making my personal journal more artistic/more visually expressive, but I didn't always have the time.  It's usually more important for me to get my thoughts down on paper when I'm in writing mode than to make them look pretty.  So I started the art journal for when I'd rather express myself in pictures than words.

I'd love to hear more of your journal ideas!  Especially ones about staying motivated to keep journalling.

I know what you mean by needing to just have a journal about writing than needing to make it look pretty because...well we're crafty so we think everything needs to....ha..

I've started reading a marital counselling sort of book called "Passionate Marriage". I write down all my thoughts while reading it (as well as in the book itself so hubby will know what I'm thinking while he reads it). Its funny, I don't have the largest vocabulary and the author likes to use unnessecarily long and irrelevant words so I look each word I don't know I write out the definition on my new VOCABULARY page.

Hi A2JC4life, I really like your idea about each person thinking of 5 prompts!
Here are my 5:
1. Postcards, (complete with an illustration if you like) Must fit the message into a small space! A postcard to an old lover or a postcard to something in nature eg the ocean.
2.Look at a picture you like. Write words that come to mind when you look at it. Turn your words into prose.
3. 'Map of consciousness': allow your pencil to doodle at will for a set amount of time. Write about your doodles. (Or just think about them consciously afterwards, if you don't want to write!)
4.Find a calm, pleasant place to sit. Just observe, how do you feel, what do you hear, smell, see etc. Write about it.
5.Use description, specifically. Even if you are just writing about what happened today, add as many descriptive passages and helpful adjectives as you can. Make your passage be as visual as possible with words.

I always doodle subconsciously. It usually ends up as a piece of abstract art.  I also like to draw random shapes on a page and them try and make a working image from them.

Craftrica, those are awesome ideas!

I used to do the postcard thing and tie it into the journal with ribbon so I could see the picture on the back.  I used to have a wide variety of different post cards, but once my best friend moved to college, we sent post cards back and forth so they kind of disappeared...oh well, ebay, here I come! haha

If you write over a photograph that's glued onto the regular paper of a journal, what do you use to do the writing?

Also, I'm curious as to what you all journal IN.  I usually use a small (5.5x8.5-inch-ish) side-spiral sketchbook.  But, wow, they've gotten expensive since the last time I bought one!

I use a fine permanent marker- those kind that write on anything! There are threads on this site that tell you how to make your own journal- that is a lot of fun , as you can make it suit you and your style 100%. I am not sure how to get back to them for you, but I'm sure if you just do a search, you will find them. Itr isn't difficult, and doesn't need special equipment!

Well, I have three notebooks I work in-- one for writing lists, important ideas that take more than a paragraph, concept sketches, and notetaking.  This is the one I've posted pages from in this thread.  It's an extra-large Moleskine cashier notebook, with unruled pages.

My second notebook is a tiny one, about 2x3 inches, for carrying around in my pocket/handbag.  I jot down things in it... things to remember to do, ideas that only take a sentence or two to describe, phone numbers, grocery lists.

My third notebook is a Moleskine watercolor notebook.  I use it for field sketching of buildings, furniture, etc.

thought you kids might be interested...

I bought a rather large number of very nice tiny journals today (both plain and lined) but they were all second-hand. the largest one of them even has a really thick black leather cover, unedged, it's beautiful.

but what intrigued me most, was finding that one of the journals I bought already has someone's inspirational quotes in it, right at the beginning of the book anyway.

if you'd like the quotes just let me know :)

also, I'm about to convert some hardbacks into notebooks/journals/sketchbooks as christmas presents - wish me luck!

speak to you soon.

How interesting. I wouldn't mind hearing them. That would be fun to buy a used journal and just read someone else's thoughts and daily struggle's and joys.

doo_leroux - less fun if it's someone's notes from observing classroom behaviour at what must be one of the local schools!!

I'll dig out those quotes when I'm not so snowed under with work :)

Aaah, now I'm done with my swaps i can finally devote some time to this thread! Yay! I love this thread. Thanks to the awesome Jillie for getting this started.
I haven't journaled much in the last year because of mental/emotional exhaustion. But I've done a lotta journal-keeping and journal-making over time and I'm always looking at/for new ideas.
Back before I'd ever lived by myself, bought furniture or had my own space to decorate, I incorporated an interior design ideas section in my journal. Anything I saw in catalogs or magazines that I liked, i ripped out and glued down in my journal, with notes in a different-colored pen on top of the images stating what it was, exactly, that I liked. These went far ahead of where I was in my daily writings in the journal, so once I reached them I would just continue writing whatever I was writing in any empty space on the page. The page shown here didn't have any empty space for journaling (and I intentionally chose this one, since the things I was journaling about at that time were rather scandalous!)

As I've become more of a crafter and ephemera fiend over the years, I've made a bunch of journals for specific uses, from craft/diy ideas to garden/landscaping to places I go in my dreams. When I'm in phases of daily writing, though, I find it much easier to just keep one big journal to put everything in rather than segmenting into different books. That makes for more fun books to look back on, too. Things can always be copied or clipped out of these journals later to be put into a themed journal.

This year I made a big recon journal out of an annual graphic design artists' directory called "Workbook." Since it has this title on the front (technically it says "orkbook," because it tore accidentally when I was taking the book apart), I'm using it specifically for personal growth work and dealing with issues. I want the whole thing to be intensely honest and personal without distraction, because this work needs to be done.

Anyway, here are some of the things I've been doing with it:
- A list entitled "A Very 'Heather' Thing To Do", inspired by a friend who said that after she put some household item to unintended use like I would...I'd never thought about it before, but it's fun to consider what behaviors are so "me" that another person doing them would think they're acting like me.  :)
- A side of my family tree, as far back as I can trace it online.
- When I catch myself thinking harmful thoughts or dropping into an especially depressed frame of mind, I pick up the journal and start documenting what was going on right before these thoughts started and also ponder deeper sources. The realizations I've made in this stage of sinking-but-still-conscious really surprise me, and they're so useful to return to when I get muddled. Sometimes doing this keeps me from slipping further downhill.
- When I catch myself making choices that exhibit self-respect/love or that are different/better from choices I've made in the past, I document that and give myself the praise I deserve for it. For me and for so many others, it is an ongoing process to unlearn a negative self-perception and replace it with positivity and compassion. I'm on a looong journey of learning to love myself and this is an important tool in the process.
- Quotes that have really hit me hard in terms of changes I need to make, followed by some journaling about that and how to do it.
- Childhood details that can help provide insight into my current behaviors/issues. My traits, my parents' attitudes toward me, their likes and dislikes.
- List of available community resources and websites that might be able to help me with my current situation.

More info and probably some photos forthcoming, one of these days.  :)

I know this is a pretty personal thing but, if you can find one that's not too baring, I would love to see an example of this.  It sounds like a great idea, but I can't quite wrap my head around it.

Sure thing. This following exerpt was the result of trying to identify what I was feeling and then questioning it rather than surrendering to it. I briefly mention toward the end what triggered it; I think its important to become aware of triggers, but the feelings they bring up need to be addressed first.

I don't want to bring anyone down in posting this, please skip over it if you like; I'm just responding to A2JC4life's request.

It's much easier to transcribe it than to upload an image, so...
"Why the nostalgia for rock-bottom vulnerability? Maybe because there's hope in that place, since things can only get better. There's nothing to lose there. But I don't think that explains it. I feel such love for that persona of me. I haven't been able to find any state of being that feels so close to the core of who I am. Health and stability just don't feel right; the state of wellness seems to invite pretense and false confidence and a dishonesty/denial with oneself, when in reality that state is fleeting, transitory, a gift that can be retracted instantly at any moment. It is wrought with vertigo. But at the bottom, there's nothing but surrender. So how do I surrender in other states of being?...This [mood of nostalgia for being at rock-bottom] that makes appearances, like it did tonight, is somewhere between a vulnerable child, a masochist, and a drama-queen. There might even be a sabotaging hypochondriac in there...The difference between [these feelings] now and a year ago is that it's not fear anymore--it's a desire to return to [rock bottom]. It took getting to that place to have my needs taken seriously by others and get the care I need...How strange to admit to myself that I miss uncontrollable crying. If I hear someone crying loudly in a movie (like right now my mom has some movie on in the other room, with a man crying violently), I empathize and long to feel that level of feeling and depth again, to be that despairing again, and I lament that I haven't had a good cry like that in recent history."

Thanks SO much for posting this thread. I try to journal as often as possible, and I used to keep a journal that was more like a diary.(Just writing about what happened that day) but I live a pretty boring life, so this idea failed, and I stopped journaling.

Your ideas are great, and they keep me organized now that my journal is mostly lists. Your journals are SO beautiful.

I like the idea of posting 5 journal prompts. The problem is I'm not good at prompts. Sorry! I'd love it if someone posted some more prompts though.

What if we all made inspiration books with posts from this thread?  I've already created a word document and printed most of your ideas!  I think I might make a book out of it!  I love learning about journaling styles and this thread is AMAZING!

just like to say, that sounds wicked :) I've forgotten what I wrote now ??? but I hope it was one of the things you liked. I'm pretty much going to just tip ideas in when I get them. plus I'm about to build myself a new journal... out of a very old sewing-machine case. in pieces, obviously. just got to find the right knife to break it apart! wish I could get around to posting pictures of some of the things I've done. everyone likes showing off, right?? :-[ :-X

anyway. yes, it sounds like a really cool idea. it'd make a great accordian book, so that you could see the progress of everyone's different thoughts all together... if you know what I mean. I don't know whether I'll manage it but I'd love to know if anyone else does one.

speak to you soon.

Hey everyone!  I don't think I've posted in her before, but I have been doing some serious stalking ;)  I pretty much to a combination of everyone's style of journaling, and I had an idea for a possible swap :)  What about swapping writing utensils, drawing materials, or whatever medium your partner uses to express his or her emotions and views of the world?  Or, what if we do a make your own postcard, like some one mentioned before?  I belong to spitcoaststampers.com, and they do these kind of swaps all the time.  You'd be put into groups of, let's say 4+you, so you'd make 5 total.  There's even some where the host of the swap would say to all of the groups, that she would like one, so you'd make 4+one for you+one for the swap host.  Something like that would be fun!  Plus it'd be a low cost for shipping!  Just a thought!

I like the idea of a one-on-one journal swap! Maybe one person keeps it a week and sends it to their partner the other week.  It would be inspirational to me, I think, to see what's going on in someone else's head. And you can respond to the other's entries, etc.  It could blossom into a beautiful friendship!

That sentence made me smile.
I like that idea for a swap, too.
I'd love to pass a journal back and forth with somebody and be able to enter the world through thier eyes. and have them see the world as I see it, as horrible as it may be somedays.  :P

However, I probably wouldn't trust myself to get to the post office once a week.

I'm going back to school and I just got this student reflection journal as one of the listed books. Here is the preface which I rather enjoyed and thought I'd share.

Journaling or keeping self-reflected notes doesn't mean we write succinctly and clearly. Rather journaling is a work in progress, a means to become aware of our thoughts and feelings so we can think about them further.

In addition, words in a journal allow us the luxury of going back. We have a trail we can follow to see where we've come from. More often than not, that journal also shows where we'd like to go - new territory both in terms of our emotions and our actions.

Think of this journaling book as a means to "get what you want" from yourself and from your life. You can even see it as an "icon" in the way Thomas Moore describes:  "Our notebooks...truly become our own private gospels and sutras, our holy books, and ....truly serve as icons, evey bit as significant in the work of our own soul as the wonderful icons of the Eastern churches are for their congregations."

This journal is intended to help you map your life now - and in the future.

Enjoy discovery.

Hi Jillie,

Just wanted to let you know that I found your ideas thread really inspiring, I have now been keeping my Journal since 16th December and I love it! Its turned out to be a bit Jack-of-all-trades as I use it as a journal, ideas book, place to make collages etc so I might have to divide it up into several note books at a later date but never mind! (I covered a note book in old foreign stamps and then, in a rare moment of genius, sticky back plastic to make it tough enough to survive my hand bag- if I ever work out how to add photos I will let you all have a nosey)

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks!

Hiii everyone! :) This thread never fails to inspire me.

However, I notice my journals are mostly writing. Soooo repetitive. A drawing or teo here and there, but mostly words. Visuals are gorgeous, they make everything more pleasing to the eye. (That's my opinion, at least) But they require so much hunting around for materials! Suddenly I find myself needing scissors and glue and markers and watercolors and it's too much work for me. (Though I'd love to include more visuals)

Anyone else has this "problem"?

Also, what do you do when your journals are full? Do you show them around, burn them, lock them away for future reference, forget about them...?
I just finished my first journal and it feels great. I started another one and I'm wondering what to do with them as I fill them up.

Sprinklemesugar: Why don't you make a journalling / creativity box? Gather some materials you find around the house, maybe some that you don't know what to do with and more obvious ones like glue stick, watercolors, crayons, colored pencils, stamps, magazine cut-outs... Just put everyting in a (decorated?) box that you keep on your desk so you're ready for action?

I have an entire creativity room - made that a priority instead of having a bedroom! :D One desk is for writing (it has my laptop, printer etc) and the other is for other creative things. I actually have a glass full of water there all the time in case I want to use watercolors....

Jillie...I love your journal and the way you've organised it. So creative!!! I am wondering one thing...do you section of parts of the notebook for each topic? Or start a page with a topic, say books you've read or whatnot, and the next page is a different topic, and once you've filled them, start again with the next empty page? Does that make sense!? LOL

Also, I noticed you said it was a notebook from Moleskine...which book is it? How big is it? I have a Moleskine Reporter, one of the smaller ones...I probably never would write in it, I just love the fact that I own it, but now you've inspired me. (I have a bit of a....hoarding....problem. Haha.)

TIA

I started making a journal last week. And I came up with an awesome trick  ;D.I used the post-it notes & used markers to color over them onto the page I was making.Sometimes one color or two or more. Then I would take the post-it notes,Use a butterfly punch & punch out the place where all the colors would be.It turned out some incredible multi-colored butterflys that perfect for some of the pages I was embelishing. The butterflys are soooo tiny I have to use a pair of tweezers to hold them til I can glue them down. :).They are really beautiful and adds a special touch to the pages.Just thought I'd share. :)

Hi ademareej, you definitely should give it a go again! For me, the best thing about journaling is that it doesn't have to be 'just right' at all -it is really just for you, to vent, to be creative, even if it doesn't turn out well, it can be your private thing, and nobody needs to see that it didn't turn out this time. Next time it will be great! We all learn best from the things that go wrong!!
BTW, I happened to find this great site for thos of you who are needing some prompts!:http://www.geocities.com/papabear1701/prompt_library.html
It has been inspiring for me!!

This thread has really inspired me. I used to journal before my kids were born but stopped to do the mommy thing. It's always been in my head though - I apparently have a collection of blank journals that the kids have found and played with. My plan for this weekend, now, is to get back in it! I'm going to borrow some of everyone's ideas for themes and pages - hope no one minds!- and check out some of the sites listed along these posts. Thanks so much, you guys, for getting my brain excited!

casmir - if you're interested in art journalling at all, perhaps your kids could make backgrounds for you! Even if they've played with and scribbled in your blank books you could use them yourself.

Sorry it took me so long to reply to your post!  I'll try now :)

I don't make sections orworry about what page comes after another.  I might have "Books I've Read" on page 1, "Dreams" on page 2, "What I ate today" on page 3, and back to "Dreams" on page 4.

The book I use is an Extra-Large Moleskine Cashier notebook.  It's about 8x10 inches, and they come in packs of three.

I think I have 8 different notebooks right now (NOT counting the un-written-in ones) so I totally understand your horading problem!   ;)

OMG it makes it so hard to be spontanous when your a perfectionist  :o

I layout my journal entries in pencil then go over them with black pen.........

I hate that everything has to be neat and arrrrrg

My art teacher said something to me once that I've taken very much to heart, and I'm very glad she enlightened me on this, because I have severe OCD and that means I'm a huuuuge perfectionist. Anyway, she said, "If you find yourself afraid to move further with a composition because you're terrified to fuck it up, you're being too protective of it. When you reach that point, the only thing you can do is fuck it all up. If you confine yourself on behalf of something else, you're limiting yourself to a life of complete and total misery. Fucking it up is half the fun."

I journal off and on... recently I have been journaling quite a bit....

My journal tends to be a combination of everyday life ramblings and lists of random things. Most of the time I stick something on the page from that day, whether its a reciept, sticker, postcard, post-it, shopping list... whatever. And then I start writing. If I am two tired to write out my normal two pages Ill make a list of my day.... Im kinda OCD and want to write down EVERY SINGLE LITTLE THING that happened.

Then there are a bunch of lists, to do, crafty to do, 2008 goals, wants, weather, dreams, quotes... etc....

The ideas in this tread are quite clever and I have started to use some of them.... although it kind bothers me when I can't find a list-y page that I want (weather for example) so I've been using post-it strips to mark thhose kinds of pages.... I even wrote on the post it so I could find the page I was looking for without have to open every page with a post it. Plus they can be moved when I start a new page!

I am planning on posting some pictures of my journal later today! :]

- Lauren

This is a great thread.  I made a journal for my friend with 50 (or maybe a 100, I forget?) different prompts.  I will post some of them soon.
Please, please do- I am always looking for new inspirations. Who has got some new 'visual' inspirations for us? Please? My journal is looking a bit dull and all writing at the moment!

don't worry, I want to upload some soon, just got to get myself together. I found an altered book today that I'd started and never finished, about life after death, it was revision once but now I guess it counts.

bear with me ;) I'll try & put pics up in a few days or so.

I've now read through this thread, I started last night and got about 18 pages into my new journal - thanks so much everyone for the prompts, and to Jillie for getting this started, and for the awesome numbering system.  I think this will be the space I need to get all those thoughts out of my head that just won't stop pecking at it till I do something with them!

Some pages are just playing with paint to make a not-blank page which I'll write on later, and pics to follow, but so far I have:
* An intro page with a stream of consciousness of the sorts of things the journal can be for me.
* Things which I have learned
* A 'bad things' page
* Weather
* A page about my dyspraxia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Developmental_Dyspraxia)
* Things I Love
* Fun for me
* Future projects, plans & schemes

Other planned pages include things which make me laugh/smile, future things I'm looking forward to, birthdays, to-do & quotations.  I also plan to brainstorm ideas for my swap partners, and to make some pages about my friends and family.

I love the post it note as a mask Idea - I've used it both with an inked up brayer and with sponging on acrylic paints.  I think I need more post it notes - they don't work on a 2nd go after they are covered with acrylic :(

I'll put pics up soon - I want to get more writing on the pages first.  One thing I have found helpful is making the main element (picture, central text, whatever) on a page, then turning the page upside down & doing the writing - it seems to free my mind a bit.

I haven't journaled since 8th grade English!  I saw someone's journal under the 'hot topics' thumbnails, and seeing that (and reading this thread, and checking out the "Wreck this Journal" website) have nudged me into starting again.  I'm planning on starting small at first; I bought a 6"x9" hardbound sketchbook, and I'll be scavenging old newspapers to collage the covers.  Thanks, ladies (and gents), I really needed this kick in the butt!

Here are prompts I put in the journal I made for my friend.  I made them in Photoshop and printed them off and bound them.  So I don't have to think about what to write about each day.

Right now, I am feeling
Detail a reoccuring dream
I'm looking forward to
I love this about my body
I really miss
Today I accomplished
The last time I cried was
I was irrationally irritated when
My best/worst traits are
Something memorbale this week
The people in my life
My favorite possession is
I didn't speak my mind when
Detail a favorite memory
Make a list of things going right
My talents are
Make a list of things to do before you die
Make a list of ways to save money
I'm seriously scared of
I'd like people to think of me as
My favorite time of the day is
My favorite holiday is
I judge people when
The best advice I ever received
The best day of my life was
My favorite time of the year is
I am inspired by
My comfort foods are
You are my best friend because
I'm really craving
Detail where you are right now
The best meal I had this week
When I want to feel good I go
I was generous when I
Today I am grateful for
If I could be someone else
Write about a belief that you've discarded
This week I laughed when
If I had a million dollars
My favorite part of nature is
What always makes you laugh?
The best present I ever recieved
The last hard decision I made
If I could change one thing
The hardest lesson I learned was
Romance in my life exists when
If I were an animal
I love you because
My favorite part of the city is
List all the things that have happened to you only once in your life

Casmir---holy cow, that's a fab gift idea!
I'm hoping to do these for my first few pages:
Quotes
Things that make me ME
Reasons I want money (not just "Paying the bills," or "Because I want to be rich,"; REAL reasons)
My favorite colors
Dreams I've had recently
What being tired means (sounds like, tastes like, looks like, etc)
Things that bother me
What makes me sad
Weather pages (i love these!)
My best friend---why I wish I have one
Favorite movies

I'll probably think of some more while lying in bed tonight.

I have a question. Currently when I want to put something in my journal I use a glue stick, or tape if I'm feeling particularly lazy. Is their anything less messy than a glue stick (like tape) but still portable like a glue stick that I could use instead? I'd love any suggestions.

Thinking about using Post Its as masks, I went to WH Smiths (Brit stationers) and picked up a multipack of different sized post its.  While I was there I noticed they also had shaped post its.  I got speech bubbles - I thought they'd be great for quotes, etc, but they also had arrows, hearts & other shapes.

I took an art therapy class recently, and as part of my homework I have to keep an art journal for three weeks.  It's been really, really awesome.  My prof. is all about art is therapeutic as a process, and not worrying about the final result.  So, right now my journal is largely me taking whatever medium I feel like (pastels, oil pastels, colored pencil, pencil, paint, crayons, everything) in any colors (or many colors) and scribbling or drawing whatever (sometimes I even close my eyes!) and then looking at what results and writing about what I think/feel when I see the picture and what I was thinking/feeling while making it.  Very freeform, and a LOT of fun.  I highly reccommend it - it is really hard to initially let go of the "this needs to look like soemhting" or "this isnt' good enough", but once I got there, it has been so amazing.

Last night I was really getting stressed out about lots of things, so I used my journal to work out what was bugging me, and I did a bit of a TPN analysis on it all, and used it to help me sort myself out.  An odd mix of business theory & art, but definitely was therapeutic.  I like my weather page for getting me doing something each day.

What is TPN analysis?  The links I found through Google were mostly studies and articles using it.

Now that sounds like fun! I am going to try it. Apparently creating Mandalas is also very therapeutic, and it is a lot of fun, too. I have tried that, and mine are very stilted/childish, but they are fun to experiment with, anyway. And as you say, it isn't how they look, it is how they make you feel, or what you get out of creating them! I got my inspiration from :www.geocities.com/plansze/mandala.html?200717

Title: Re: "What do YOU Journal About?!" Ideas thread!
Post by: PurpleHeather on April 15, 2008 11:56:38 PM
TPN analysis is a simpl e method of deciding how much control you have over something: you give each item one of the 3 letters, so T means you have Total control over it, P is Partial control & N is No control - you can do nothing about it. it was helpful because in my weary, addled state it let me focus on the things I could do to make my mood better.  I'll try to photograph the page if people like?

Ooh, mandalas - I have a mandala colouring book, and that is lovely.  I'll try to dig it out.  I have a memory from when I was 13 of drawing flowers with a compass (http://mathforum.org/~sarah/hamilton/ham.seeing.marking1.html) then colouring them in with lovely watercolour pencils to help me through the grief of my grandad dying.  I can see how mandalas would be therapeutic.

All of you have so many great ideas! Which I can steal :P

As I browsed through it, I got some ideas of my own:
-Cool new music I've discovered recently
-Tattoo's/piercings I want
-What I wanted most today
-The people I've enjoyed talking to today
-Events I want to attend (concerts, festivals, musicals)
-Who annoyed me today

Maybe you can steal some of those too xD

*nods*  I've got a 'Songs to acquire' page, for music I hear on TV, out & about so I can remember to pick it up next time I'm on iTunes etc.  :D

I like the interesting people page :D

I've just ordered a moo sticker book (http://"http://www.moo.com/products/stickers.php") of my favourite photos from my flickr photo stream, some of which I'm hoping to use in journals.

I always used to have a journal page devoted to songs I wanted to acquire. It was good to have them all in one convenient spot. iTunes etc. made it less essential, since now I don't have to ask other people for music.  :) But I still value those lists in my old journals because I can see what music was in my head at the time I wrote the journal...I also rediscover some good music I'd forgotten.

Speaking of tattoos, when I did a lot of work with henna in the past I would sketch out potential designs with a brown colored pencil, and also practice with the henna itself in my journal! It was a large book with plain, fairly thick paper, so the henna would bleed through a few pages, but it made a nice design on those pages anyway. Best to leave the book open til the stuff dries, though.

Do any of you do "morning pages," such as are discussed in Julia Cameron's "The Artist's Way"? Basically it's sitting down and writing whatever is in your head as soon as you get up in the morning, which results in a clearer head the rest of the day--getting out all the negativity or things that might hinder your creativity/wellbeing. I hope I can someday incorporate that practice in my life.

My favorite page right now is my 'feelings' page.  At least once a day, I crack 'er open and make a quick doodle of what I'm feeling at the moment, with a little label to make things specific.  The drawings are mostly abstract/weird as all get-out, but it's interesting to see what my emotions 'look like'.

Title: Re: "What do YOU Journal About?!" Ideas thread!

I will say that for me my journal is based on so many things. Its hard to limit it
It can be sketches
to do lists
poems
observations
thoughts
things Im feeling
future ideas for future projects
material lists
doodles
basically I found that when i tried to limit it to a sketchbook or just writings it didn't feel real. So make it what you want. And if you use a moleskin they have a pocket in the back so you can use it to collect things!

Have fun!

I really like the idea of a compliments page, it would be good for days when one has low selfesteem.

I also like the idea of waking up in the morning and writing all your thoughts. I'm not sure if I could do it, I may try this morning.

My journal isn't writing so much as heaps of stuff glued in that means alot to me, like letters from my friends/family, plane tickets, a random love letter my mum found, menus from restaurants I like etc.
So mine really is a papery journal. Soon it wont be able to close!

What I did yesterday I thought was pretty cool. I went trhough all the bags I use (and I use ALOT!) and found all the scraps of paper lyring around and glued them to a page in my journal. Bus tickets, movie tickets, business cards, gum wrappers and stuff.
It was fun finding all my old pieces of paper, and it was a good way to clean out my bags.
=)

Not near as emotionally searching:
I started a "where I've swapped" journal with my 6 year old. I got the idea because I had postcards as parts of several swap packages & a recent one there were flat paper goodies included for her- so we are doing a book & she gets a little geography lesson out of it :)

I have a specific notebook dedicated to things that people have said to me through out the years, and it's called my "happy" notebook. As long as you only look at the recent it makes you happy... sometimes it hurts reading the past, but they're still good memories nonetheless.

I have an ongoing journal I started years ago (ack, over TEN years ago! It's weird how quickly life goes by, in some ways!), which is a record of memorable little moments and inside-jokes and the little idiosyncracies about loved ones that I like...All the things that add up to Life, cumulatively, but which we usually take for granted and don't often think about or remember because they aren't that big of a deal individually. Because it's not the factual memory that you went to a birthday party that gives you warm fuzzies, it's that the cake was strawberry-flavored and your friend's parents made sure the least popular kid at the party got the best prize while the bossy popular kid got a pair of old ugly underwear as a gag prize before receiving their own party-favor. Games my kindergarten teacher taught the class, songs I made up about my friend's family, the best day I had with my 1st boyfriend in jr high school...Every time I remember some little detail like that, I jot it down in the journal.
Before I started it, I gathered some photos of moments like those and memorable people from throughout my life, cropped them down to an inch or less in size, and glued them to the pages (in the upper left margin on the back of the page, and in the lower right margin on the front of the page, so a spread of 2 pages starts with a photo and ends with a photo). They helped jog my memory about these things, and make it all feel more homey, for lack of a better word. It's nice to have all these memories in one place that's easy to visit.  :)

Well..I just feel like an uncreative journaler now..
I just use a composition notebook..and the most creative thing I ever do in there..is use diffeant colored pens..
I do use it alot though..I pretty much sit through my classes and tune out my teachers, and write all day.
My newest thing I put in my journal..is a list of things to put in my next journal..
I dont think that the notebook im using now is good enough for some of the ideas that I got from here..because its notebook paper.
Im in Jr. High..and therefore..quite naive..Can someone tell me what a Moleskin is?
I love this thread so much..
and as for easy ways to put stuff in your journal..
(I read this a few pages back..and it just occured to me)

You don't need a fancy notebook to have an awesome journal! Comp books can be excellent journals, as long as it works for you.
A molskine is a brand of notebook/journal. They are staggeringly popular, in spite of not being cheap. I use one because they lay flat, which make writing easier. Also, the size is just what I need and the paper is nice and thick. (I use the sketchbook, 3.5" by 5.5") http://www.moleskineus.com/sketchpocket.html (http://www.moleskineus.com/sketchpocket.html) Here's a description of the one I use and all of their other products.

I can't believe I sat here and read through all of this, am thinking about making my own journal, and actually writing in it!  Wow is craftster good for a kick in the butwah.

I hate to mess up a perfectly pretty journal with my messy writing.  I like to have notebooks near me, but don't like writing about me in them.  And I am so worried about what someone would think if they saw anything I wrote - i don't even start knowing that I won't make it a whole week writing.

Never once thought of ripping out a page and burning it, but really, when I think about it, if it was something that bothered me that badly why wouldn't I want to expunge it!  Light it and send back to the universe!  That thought is so freeing to me.

I am going hiking for six days this summer and have been trying to tell myself that I need to do a travel journal and not mess it up....I'll be thinking a little bit differently now about how to do this.  Thank y'all for sharing.

One of the things that got me writing when I was afraid of blank pages was painting or stamping some marks on the paper, turning the page upside down & writing around them.  I've got messy handwriting, and I don't mind it so much when the writing is upside down.

i just started my journal the other day :)
like many, the thought of blank pages scares me...so i used an old book, that way there's already writing all over the pages :D ..i don't really write in mine..like a diary or anything, it's mainly sketches (maybe a few appropiate lyrics scattered) and stuff like leaflets and stickers stuck in
it's about my summer, but the books pretty long so it may spread past summer
so far it's got my trip to the aquarium :)
and im working on a sketch of a band i'm going to see in 3 days, and i've left space for the ticket once its done
i'm excited at filling more pages with day trips to the seaside and music festivals :D

I think it's wonderful that so many people are giving old books a new life!  I've always felt bad about writing in books, even my college textbooks, so I'm too chicken to try it.

It's actually a very good feeling to alter/reconstruct/vandalize a book that you have strong feelings against!  :D As long as it is *your* book and doesn't have resale value and isn't a rare book, of course. With inspiration from the Altered Journal Craft-Along (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=248633.0) thread, I finally started messing with a novel I bought (used, at least) which was a complete waste of my reading time. And with every new page of this "art journal", I get to say, "Take THAT, [author's name]!"  :D

It might feel good to do after finals, if the campus bookstore won't buy back your book and it's a subject area you aren't going to pursue. (Definitely don't wreck books that are related to your major, at least until after you graduate, because you may need them again! I learned this one the hard way.)

Another thing I've done with journals is write up an outline of a borrowed book that I know I'll want to come back to, but don't have the time/focus to really absorb what it's saying at the time. Sometimes copying down the table of contents is enough, if it's detailed, but usually I would go through the whole book and write down all the sub-headings and such, all in outline format. If there are books of interest in its bibliography/"works cited" section, I'll write those down, too. Especially when you're bombarded with reading material in college, it is easy to forget about interesting books you encounter, or what they were about, and this gives you all the info to hold onto without having to keep the book in your possession in the meanwhile.

This is a really awesome thread!  i have been keeping a sketchbook/art journal for several years now and i now have some great ideas!  unfortunately i don't have any pictures from my current books or the ones before it.  The book i use is one of the blank sketchbooks from borders bookstores, the biggest one they have, and i take it with me everywhere!  I normally just write what is happening to me and draw little doodles.  i also tape or glue in anything i think is really cool or newspaper articles and ticket stubs.

i guess a few of the things i normally write about would be:
whatever is really troubling me
drawing posters illustraiting my favorite songs
project ideas
drawing/writing about intersting people i see
listing random things from the groceries i need to get to where i want to live in the next twenty years

hello calluna - took your advice. trash novel I found on a train platform, now subject to all my long-winded biro workings-out of clothes patterns. if I ever make the transition from simple stitch-and-go, I think I will design something complex, moody, italian-style, covered in intrigue (read- embroidery) and name it after the book... after all, doesn't everyone want a skirt called "A FLORENTINE REVENGE"?!  :D

thanks for the tip!

I love this thread! I just read through it all. I love to take pages out of old books and use them to alter my journals. I have been wanting to make some funky journal boxes cut out of different colored papers to glue into my journal and journal different topics on. I can't wait to see more scans of other peoples journals.

Hello.  I love all of your ideas.  I'm sitting here with a new composition notebook out, and the first page is Things to journal about.  I've been jotting down all the wonderful ideas you've had.  So if I ever get stuck, I'll just refer to the front page.

Like many, I too can't write in a journal everyday.  It becomes overwhelming to write all about my day.  But with this form of journaling it will be a lot easier and more fun for me to journal everyday.  I would rather have a journal than a blog because a blog could get deleted, or something could happen to it.  With a journal you can always refer back to it.

And If by any chance I become a writer[i don't thing so :p ] I can refer to my personal journal for ideas.  And I would rather have a journal in my own handwritting.

I use to have a diary, and sometimes i just wanted to doodle all over the pages, but i had strict rules for it such as:
-No doodling
-No colored pens
-no pictures.
-No markers, colored pencils, crayons.
And once i filled up that I knew i would never do it again.  I love pink, purple, green, ect. pens.  And doodles.

Anyways sorry for my rant.  Thanks for the great ideas!   ;D

My journals aren't nearly as intersting as some of the ones here! I've managed to write every day for about three years, but that's all it is... writing, with the occasional decoration. I think visual journals are so cool, but I've never been able to do one.  :(

Wow, so I just sat here and read through all nineteen pages of this!! Very inspirational.

I've decided to start another journal (my old one kinda turned to shite!) tonight. I wrote down a list of things I want to journal about, some ideas I've stolen from this thread, some just came to me while reading it.

Heres my list:

-Words/quotes I like. Decorate page with drawings and clippings that remind me of the quote. (Im gunna do a page like this tonight.)
-Monthly calender. Starting september a bit late!! Oops, not much has happened though.
-Media page. I watch a lot of movies and read alot of books. Should be a good way to keep track of them.
-To do list.
-Food lists. I often slip into very bad eating habits, I think writing down what I eat each day would be a good way to keep track of what I am eating, and making sure I am eating well enough.
-Things I've learned about myself.
-Crafts I want to do/learn.
What I want in a relationship. I have a habit of falling for really bad types, so I want to write down what I want in a partner so I dont make the same mistakes Ive made in the past.
-Places I love. I plan on doing a page like this tonight too.
-'Morning page' as suggested my Calluna. It looks like a good idea.

I might post some pages later on tonight!

=)

EDIT:
Here are the three pages I've done today.

September calender. Friends birthdays (funny how all but one are on a wednesday!!) And things I did that day. Will be doing this every month.

This page I really love. These are photos of a friends house that I absolutly fell in love with. If anyone wants to see better pictures just ask and I will post them!

And this one, that I was really unsure of posting..

I had lots of fun (though a sore hand!!) doing these pages. And I feel I am going to be doing quite a lot more!

Love your journal pages and the condom packet is so funny. (coming from an old, divorced mom who doesn't get much any more!)
I visited your blog and the resin work is so wonderful. Your friends are lucky to have such a talent in their lives, if you don't mind me saying so.

yossarian, i can relate. i have three pages much like yours in my journal.
perhaps i'll steal your idea of what to look for in a partner, it seems as though i could benefit from that as well.

thank you for the idea.

But this thread is pretty inspirational - I've always been a little confused as to the true purpose of a journal, but now I see that there IS a creative outlet for my love of lists and organisation! :P Thank you for posting.

I'm making a new Art Journal.  I'm taking my mother to France for two weeks and I want to record our thoughts and this special time together.  To be honest we've never been close - but the last few years have changed dramatcially and I'd like something in our past to show our growth and our closeness.  Especially if things get bad again...at least I'll have these words and images to turn to.

So, I've got this coffee table book on Paris and I've been taking gesso to the pages and intend to start on this shared art journal the moment we get to the airport.  Here are a few pics of the surfaces I'll be writing/drawing/pasting on:

Wow...your number system is so unconventionally organized! I love it! Generally, I just journal whatever comes to mind, but I absolutely MUST keep a list of books that I want to read in my journal.

I'm making my own journal to start a "Gratification Journal" it will only hold beautiful, happy, positive thoughts, goals, projects and things that I am grateful for! XD I am really excited to be starting it! I'm going to make it slightly "scrapbook" like in the sense that there will be stickers, stamps and paper glued in! <33

Well. sicne i scrap every day life and not nessesarily events, thats what my journaling is. just things. Occasionaly, i'll do a top ten list of something i like or hate at that moment and scrap that because in 5 yars that might be different.

I can't believe that I just read twenty pages of this! Anyhow I also love to journal (I think we may have coined a new verb!) but generally I only journal during the summer as I am still in secondary (High) school and find that I lack the time and inspiration during the school year.

Anyhow I keep a travel  journal which is maybe 6 by 3/4 inches and by now almost as thick as it is wide! I love looking through it and rembering all of the holidays I have been on. At the beggining of each holiday I have full dairy enteries but it quickly morphs into a collage of pictures and a sentance her and there.

My summer journals are different. They are full of all sorts of random things. Pictures, doodles, photos, postcards, tickets, sweet wrappers, pressed flowers etc. I also have drawing of the landscapes and nature. Another thingI always include which I don't think anyone else has posted about is recipes. I love being able to remember a particular day by reading the recipe of the cookies or pasta sauce I made that day. This works especially well with sertain things which I only make during the summer like strawberry jam and elderflower cordial. Then each summer I copy the recipes from one summer journal to the next as I make my summer stuff. I also have quotes, writing, lists, thoughts etc in these journals.
If i am doing something special during the summer such as going to a festival or on a road trip then I try to write a few note on what I did each day. This sometimes takes bullet point format and sometimes essay style. This means that I can look back and read about what I did during the summer during the long, dark winter.

Whoa...long post! Anyhow I will try and post some pictures from my summer 2008 journal as soon as I get access to a scanner.

Happy journaling!

This is a slightly old thread now but I found it so inspirational.  Ive been sticking things in my journal all day!  Its been great.  I cant wait to start writing in it :D  If I post some pictures then maybe I can revive this thread? Lol.

Also I LOVE the idea of a swap where people share a journal.  A friend of mine does a similar thing with someone she knows, they just swap over whenever they get a chance to see each other.  Would be amazing to do this by post!  I would be so happy if anyone wants to send me a pm about doing this?

sling your tea/coffee/other hot beverage on it. ;) or wine! new year's eve seems to offer a thousand opportunities.

...that way you've got something to either work with, or work against, you know?

either that or... depending on what you're up to as this year falls into the next one, you could get some folks around you to contribute; fill the first few pages with scrawled hopes and fears about the new year, and memories of the last one.

I'm working out sketchbooking things these days... which is also pretty difficult. so I kind of know what you mean, I think.
hope that helped, anyway, let me know if you have any other thoughts :)

Yep, I really want to get my journal more 'visual' this coming year- only problem is, my 'art skills' are non-existent. Everything I try looks like it has been done by a 1st grader! I read somewhere that whenever you stop drawing your skills stay at that level. Who can help me here? I drool over other peoples visual journals, but mine just never look any good! please give me inspiration!!!!

Or just draw abstact shapes!
Good luck.

But if we do a journal swap, I don't think it should be one of those "round robin" swaps cause... well, alot of people don't have the money for postage at the moment, like, some people just can't afford to spend a fiver on postage, or the time to annotate 12 other people's journals :-\
So I think it should just be a normal swap, where each person has one partner - I think it would be less stressful, too, especially for those of us with the july exams or whatever

I assume that it will be like:
- buy/make a journal
- fill it in however you please
- send it to swap partner
- done!

Am I right or have I missed something??  ???

SUPER IMAGE HUMOUNGOUS!

Okay! Im finally going to post some pictures of my journal... Lots of ideas nicked from this here thread, a few originals... But I love it, I am addicted (except the last few days when Ive been too ill to use brain power).

My inside cover has a ace quote that I wanted to show everyone

It says "Even so, my memory has grown increasingly dim, and I have already forgotten any number of things.  Writing from memory like this, I often feel a pang of dread.  What if I've forgotten the most important thing?  What if somewhere inside me there is a dark limbo where all the truly important memories are heaped and slowly turning to mud?"  Its from Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami who is my all time favourite author.

Next I have a Things I Love page

Kind of self explanatory, sorry you cant see the cream hearts all that well...

Then we have my media page

All my cinema tickets and a few TV shows (with dreadful little drawings, I am not an artist by any stretch of the imagination!)

My Books page

With my dreadfully grown up books listed underneath :-[

Music page

It is the worst drawn stave ever... Im going to hunt down some old sheet music for when I do the next page!

A very essential To Do list

I have ticked off everything except the doctors now ;D

My Beautiful Things page

Not dreadfully exciting but I wanted to show off the lovely pink paper that came came with a craft magazine I bought

Quote

Just incase you cant read my handwriting it says "Fall in love or fall in hate, Get inspired of be depressed, Ace a test or flunk a class, Make babies or make art, Speak the truth or lie and cheat, Dance on tables or sit in the corner, Life is divine chaos, Embrace it, Forgive Yourself, Breathe, And enjoy the ride..."  I think I saw it on the net somewhere.

Christmas page

That is lots of christmas cards cut up and collaged, also some ribbon and felt reindeers.  Way better than sticking the cards in the bin!

Twilight page

Yes I have seen it four times but I get free cinema so please dont think Im *completly* insane!  Again showing myself to be a super grown up 21 year old lol.  I like my lil lion and lamb in the corner ;D

Writing prompts

I made a lil pocket in the back with blue card and then wrote out like a million writing prompts, I just pull one out at random and write a page.  I aim at once a week but really that doesnt work lol.

I have other pages but theyre the most exciting ones... I have a dreams page and an inspiration page that have nothing on them yet... And a couple of solely text pages- mainly the writing prompt pages.

Hope people like or are inspired or something, feel free to comment :D

I just finished my fattest journal ever. I've had this one for about two months. It contains lots of text, photos from my birthday, flower petals, collages, drawings. It ends with the death of a loved one. A lot of sadness right now.
I want to start my new journal on a happier note, with some light....

Oh Battenberg, I love your prompts page  :D
I keep mine in an envelope at well except it's not cut up and my ideas are on 3 notes, not seperate papers for them :)
And I really like how you did the 'Things I love'
May I ask you for some of your original prompts :)? (I am very curious)

Antigone, I have seen your journal earlier today on jr_nal and I really like the fatness of it :D
Sorry for your loss :(
I hope happyness will return to you

And to finish of, a note to myself: how come it took me so long to find out about Jillie's numbering system? It's awesome!

These are not exactly journals. I call them "green notebooks" (althought, as you can see, there is an x-men one XDD). I started the first on 2005 because clases were boring and I wanted to do other things without being obvious. I use them for everything, from writing little stories (or long ones) to taking some class notes.

The covers of the seven I've finished. They are in order, from oldest (top left) to newest (the one that is alone)

Random pages from different notebooks.

I always use the last page to doodle ^__^

So many great ideas on this thread and I've only had time to look at 2 pages of it! I too am a failed journaller - creative writing student it all gets a bit too intimidating - so I love the idea of hopping around from page to page, having a folder of writing prompts (thanks to OP for these http://www.canteach.ca/elementary/prompts.html ) to 'just write' for 10 minutes, a page reserved for doodling, etc. etc. etc. - So many great ideas I think I need to lie down in a darkened room now before my brain combusts!   :D

STILL only up to page 17 - have 2 further great lists of prompts - maybe I should just fill a journal with things I could write if I had time?  :D Love this link from craftricia http://www.geocities.com/papabear1701/prompt_library.html  And this list below, posted by athenamat? about a year ago.......Now then - must move off my butt and DO rather than DREAM  ::)

Right now, I am feeling
Detail a reoccuring dream
I'm looking forward to
I love this about my body
I really miss
Today I accomplished
The last time I cried was
I was irrationally irritated when
My best/worst traits are
Something memorbale this week
The people in my life
My favorite possession is
I didn't speak my mind when
Detail a favorite memory
Make a list of things going right
My talents are
Make a list of things to do before you die
Make a list of ways to save money
I'm seriously scared of
I'd like people to think of me as
My favorite time of the day is
My favorite holiday is
I judge people when
The best advice I ever received
The best day of my life was
My favorite time of the year is
I am inspired by
My comfort foods are
You are my best friend because
I'm really craving
Detail where you are right now
The best meal I had this week
When I want to feel good I go
I was generous when I
Today I am grateful for
If I could be someone else
Write about a belief that you've discarded
This week I laughed when
If I had a million dollars
My favorite part of nature is
What always makes you laugh?
The best present I ever recieved
The last hard decision I made
If I could change one thing
The hardest lesson I learned was
Romance in my life exists when
If I were an animal
I love you because
My favorite part of the city is
List all the things that have happened to you only once in your life

OMG, I art journal about everything...whatever happens to be on my mind at the time that I open my journal.  Some days it's more art and other days it's more journaling...just depends on what my mood is that day.
Here are some of my "creations":

I art journal every single day (it is my means of sanity) so I have hundreds, these just happened to be the first ones I came across in my photos on my laptop.

I'm about to give my first Art Journaling Workshop here in my little hometown in Alabama and am so excited to be sharing the hows and whys of something I love.

Peace & Love,
~Barb~

I've just started my visual journal and i'm using lots of the ideas from this thread. I'm also doing a 'photo a day' bit. I constantly take photos so i figured i'd choose one I take each day (one that i wouldn't usually get developed) and just print it straight from the computer.

What I really want is an art journal - I love to write but my current journal never recieves any attention (blank pages intimidate me  :-[) But in recently discovering this awesome section of Craftster, I think I've found my calling! Tomorrow I'm going to buy a huge fat plain notebook from the local stationer's and get going! (I have sooo many ideas now!)

I recently started my own journal. I've had many over the years, mostly written, but I never keep them going. For a while I even used to fake journal entries pretending that I wrote them on the actual day...  ;)

So here's my most recent one. I'm having a LOT of fun with it - -although it hasn't turned out even a little like I thought it would. Almost every idea has been stolen from this site. I huge thanks to everyone for inspiring me and letting me "borrow" your ideas.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery :D

My journal is a huge binder with a Junior Mint cover. It's lined, which i'm not completely happy with, but it was just taking up space so I figured that I might as well use it.

No title page yet, and page 2 was supposed to be a calendar - but I havent bothered since the month is almost over. Hopefully i'll have an April calendar.

Page 3: the weather. Stolen from... Phebee
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=239360.0

Page 4: Things I learned today. Stolen from Jillee
I had wanted to paint over the post-its cause that looked great but couldn't be bothered getting my paints out. So far i've only used crayola markers :D

Page 5: A photo a day. So far i've only done one photo cause i can never be bothered hooking my printer up to my laptop. But I like this page. Too bad only 2 photos can fit on a page.

Pg 6-7: Commentary on my tv shows

Pg 9: I'm going to start another music page later, but this one is just for those songs that get stuck in head for days, weeks, months at a time. And it's usually only a few lines of the song, so I quoted them here.

Pg 11: Dreams - not that I can ever remember them :P
I loved the quote I drew a picture frame around.
"Follow your dreams. Except the one where you fly. That never ends well."

Pg 12: My TO DO crafts page

My book list. I have about 10 pages with 300 books listed. I went overboard on the black lines which i'm not happy about. So i'm ignoring decorating these pages for a while.

Notes on books I read. I decided to write them on lined yellow paper.

Collage of things I want.

My pathetic hole punch dot page.

Thanks for looking!! And the inspiration!! :D

I have been browsing this site for a few weeks now and decided I would join up after being so inspired by your journals, I have been planning on starting one for a while, especially since becoming a mom but the thought of a blank page to fill everyday kinda put me off, I can see this being something I enjoy adding to each day and a good way to give me a little down time after the babies are in bed, I love all your idea's

Here's a really cool idea. Ever since my boyfriend I went to a park for a picnic, playing on his guitar, feeding the birds and reading poetry, we've come up with a little game based on a poem, by Elizabeth Barret Browning.

You know, the poem that goes, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways..

Well we'd text each other starting with that famous words for e.g.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways,

#1. How you always say you'll stop spoiling me rotten but you still end up spoiling me.

So I THINK my boyfriend is compiling all of the thing's we've said to each other in a book, actually I'm 100% sure. :) He always said I'm pyschic.

Oh and I bet he's going to include in all our "Starbucks Moments" we've had. Its basically where we find time to go to Starbucks or any good coffee place and talk and talk and talk.. and realising that we always find something new about each other.

I guess what I'm saying is too start a shared journal with someone you love or do a journal to give them on those special anniversaries. maybe once he's done with the journal and given it to me I might post it, that is if that's what he's working on, my psychic powers aren't always accurate.

I found a great site full of ideas, like have a master to do list you want to complete in your life time to a restaurant journal.

the same site also has a random prompt generator. I'm not sure if its updated often.

I used to share journals with my best friends, but they both lost interst in it. But then the other day my boyfriend randomly wanted to share a journal with me. Me being the writer that I am found this the most romantic thing in the world. the hardest thing is coming up with couple writing prompts.

This link may not appeal to everyone, but it has opened up a whole new world of writing for me!! I absolutely LOVE it!! The lady who posts the prompts' name is Joyce Fetterol, and this is her philosophy:

I find self-reflective writing prompts uninspiring. I suppose they're good for you. Like vitamins. At least with a vitamin you swallow it and it's gone in a second. But writing prompts you have to live with for 10, 15, 30 minutes. More like a meal. I wanted fantasy prompts to savor so I started collecting and writing some.

So if you want to have a look, it is here:

Craftrica, I love those writing prompts! I always like doing small character sketches or poetic narratives about the things I see around me, but lack the energy or interest in writing fully-fleshed out stories. I've been wanting to revive my fiction writing for a while, and hopefully this can help me now that I've started journaling again. Thanks for the link!

I also like the couples journal idea, and think it would make a nice therapeutic exercise. Many couples have trouble communicating with each other verbally, and have many problems stemming from it since they don't realize how differently they think about things. Sharing a journal would be a nice way of sorting out each other's feelings and maybe coming to an agreement about their problems.

I've posted here before but never thought to say (admit) this:

I journal what I want to happen.

My wishes.

And strangely enough they tend to come true...

With my new business I have yet to sit down and write new goals for myself but I will. The wishes I write can be anything - "Please x, contact me" and so on - and it seems to work really well even when it's not goals I set for myself and gravitate / work towards them.

I think this is one of my favorite ongoing threads at Craftster.  You all inspire me so much.

I have several journals that I am working on.  I have decorating journals, gardening journals, list journals, to do list journals & even a frugality journal.  I know it's weird but the frugality journal is my favorite.  It is like my own Tightwad Gazette.

I came up with an idea the other night after having my feelings hurt.  I love to make cards. My cards are pretty popular.  Like all paper crafters we put so much into them. Like our cat running around with stamps on his feet.  The glue stick stuck in your hair & you don't realize this for ten minutes.  You slice off a lock of your hair while cutting paper.  Your other cat is attacking the Cricut, diving it, grabbing the mat & you are watching the very expensive paper you just bought be mutiliated.  You get it, lol.

I made a card, while I was sick.  I mean desperately ill, should be in bed, not crafting sick.  I watched the recipient throw it on the floor as if it was nothing. My beautiful card, with the expensive paper & all that love was bent.  I spent hours coloring the stamped image on the card.

I made a decision no more card making for me, except for rare occasions where people appreciate it.

I love SCS for the gallery.  I feel so inspired.  I have a list of sketches a mile long or 5 gigabytes on my hard drive. :)

I decided instead of giving up my love of card making.  I will make the cards into my daily art card to put in my journal.

If you love card making & are burned out make the cards for yourself.  We save cardstock because we are only making fronts. :)

Sorry so long winded.  I am venting too.  Still hurt over such a trivial things.  I was really sick.

I know exactly what you mean!! Noone has ever been rude enough to throw a card i make on the floor but I know that within a few days it will most likely be in the bin. I stopped making handmade cards for this reason a while ago. Having a art card journal is such a great idea! I always found it really hard to part with cards after putting so much effort into them. This way I could keep them...

That's not trivial at all - that would have upset anybody, I'm sure. What a horrid thing to do :-(

I'm glad you've thought of a way you can continue your passion while protecting your feelings.

I've not gotten a handmade card from anyone but know I would keep it - in my journal most likely. I love handmade gifts so much. My best friend dyed a skein of yarn for me for Christmas and it was my favorite gift this year.

Yeah, me too - but we're crafters, it makes a difference. We know how much lvoe goes into things. I have had handmade cards, and I do keep them :-) Only give your things to people who will value them! [grin]

Title: Re: "What do YOU Journal About?!" Ideas thread!
Post by: lylacfey on April 24, 2009 04:49:50 AM
You are all sweet, thank you.  The person who I gave the card too is actually a paper crafter if that doesn't beat it all, lol.My DH tells me all the time she is jealous of me. That is why she did it.

It was a good lesson.  Now, I have all sorts of cards to journal with.

Have you all seen iHanna's blog for journaling: http://www.ihanna.nu/blog/

If you have nothing to do for the weekend you will spend hours reading her blog.  She is my inspiration.

I made my WIP's list tonight (Work in Progress) half of it was journaling.  I think it's an obsession.

I usually do traditional journaling with some collages etc!

In my journals, I...
- write prayers
- take notes
- poems
- my thoughts
- how the day was
- etc

I LOVE this thread!  I haven't had a chance to look thoroughly, but just browsing through there is so many great ideas.  I always want to journal, and I find that I do really well for about a month before my writing just tapers off to nothing.  Last year, I made myself a weekly planner/journal in a notebook I already had (purse sized, I like to keep it with me all the time) using ideas for writing prompts, lists, things to do, etc...that I got from looking at a million different journals, craft books, writing books, everywhere.  I just finished it this week, and was totally unprepared, so now I have a printed calendar for this month and am about to start my next year's planner/journal.  I think this time I'm going to do monthly (less pages dedicated to the planner, plus I'm a stay home mom now, my calendar just isn't as busy as it was when I was working).  I'm borrowing some ideas from this thread for my new journal, so I'll share some from my old one, some of which will be recycled.  I'm still kind of a newbie, so I can't post pictures, and anyway I have to do some memory card overhaul before I can take new pictures, but I will when I get a chance.  Here are some of my pages, I filled them out whenever I had some free time, even just a couple minutes:

-5 things: to remember, to forget, to make, to learn, to collect
-Random 5's (throughout the book, I just made 3 topics, then when I had a couple minutes, I would pick one and list 5 things):  tastes, smells, textures; colors, sounds, sounds, flowers; fruits, veggies, herbs/spices; philosophers, 80's movies, Harry Potter characters...anything would work
-My Favorite Things:  flower, smell, color, food, city, season...
-I Wish...
-Words I LOVE/Words I HATE
-Rant page for grumpy days
-Favorite Quotes
-Music, Movies, Books, Art I love/should check out
-To do lists
-A lot of blank pages for whatever

I also tried some doodle pages, but I just hate my own drawing and don't really enjoy doing it.  I would like to, but I'm never happy with it, so it's discouraging.  Anyway, I'll post pics when I can.  Thanks for the inspiration!

I love the 5 things and 5 randoms ideas~! I'm so going to use them in my journal!! Thankyou!!

I'm about 60 pages into mine atm - about a third of the way. I am having SO MUCH FUN! I write something in it almost everyday. It's so much less pressure than having a proper diary!! I love that I just can write in it with crayons and markers and that's okay! :D

I like the random 5s ideas too; I love lists, and I might just have to use those in my journal. I also like the My Favorite Things idea, though I would probably do mine in doodles instead of words. Here are some other ideas I've put in my journal:

-The first thing I thought when I opened my eyes today was...(this one gets really interesting. I have some strange things go through my head in the morning)
-What if...?
-List of tiny things (doodled, though; not words)
-Gift ideas (I always forget when the time rolls around)
-Random thoughts, for those weird things that like to pop up in your heard from time to time
-Color schemes. In my artwork I sometimes get stuck on one group of colors, so I cut out color schemes from magazines that I like, usually from the makeup sections or home decorating articles. Then I paste them here.

I LOOOOOOOOVE your journal!! It is so much fun! I like that you have all the areas planned out first and then go back and fill them in. I start new most days with mine.

I want to steal so many of your ideas! 5 things, rotten day rants and the favourite things pages which is awesome. I love all the little designs you drew around it.

Oh and you have the tiniest journal in the world. It is absolutely adorable!! Thanks for sharing :D :D

Thanks a lot! :D There are also calendar pages as it's my planner/journal, but they're pretty straightforward and boring.  I like to have it done before I start carrying it around, but right now I'm kind of filling it in and using it because I wasn't thinking ahead when my other one filled up.  Blank pages intimidate me.

Oh and you have the tiniest journal in the world. It is absolutely adorable!! Thanks for sharing :D :D

I like a small one to fit in my purse (which is pretty small, and getting packed so full as to be ridiculous. :o  I may need to upsize).  I have a lot of time waiting in the car driving bf around, so it's handy to have something to do that makes me feel like the creative juices are flowing.  I usually get home and find something to work on.  I have a larger one that I usually just write in that usually just stays in my desk.  Sometimes stuff gets transferred from small to large or used as inspiration for writing.

I've *always* been a "journal hoarder". I love how some books are soooo pretty and/or elegant. I have everything ranging from expensive, hand-bound Italian leather from Venice, to one covered in cartoon owls as a gift from a friend.

I love the idea of writing down my thoughts but I've always gone crazy with the typical "diary" set up. I might write in it for a week straight and then stop because it's just not fun and I felt like I was forcing myself to get it done. I agree with bunnyface too... blank pages are really intimidating for me. Especially with the dear diary format. With the creative art journal ideas posted here they're way more anticipatory.

I just had to post and say that all these ideas really appealed to me and I picked up one of my journals to start on last night.

Here are the pages I've started so far:

*Google It (things I have googled... there are a lot of them. plus it shows different things I'm interested in and want to find out more about or more insight to a specific period of my life. For example, now I'm trying to find a job so a lot of the entries are "craigslist", "monster.com", "careerbuilder" as well as specific company wesbites to see if they're hiring)

*Things I've learned on this day... (with the post-it notes idea. Love that. :) Yesterday's entry: "Coulrophobia is the fear of clowns.")

*Gifts (both given and received as well as the occasion and date)

*Dreams (also added the quote mentioned previously "Follow your dreams. Except the one where you fly. That never ends well." because it's hilarious and also strangely relevant to my life and what my "dream job" was when I started college. I started out as a pilot but weird things happened and I had to give it up. So, in reality, it didn't end well... but I can laugh about it now.)

*Listening-in.... (overheard conversations where you want to ask someone what the hell they're talking about but never do. Semi-inspired by the comedian that overheard "if it weren't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college" - incidentally, something else I have googled - and mentioned it in his skit. Also inspired by my husband on the cell phone with someone last night who listened to the other person and then stated "you're not a blonde with big tits so I can see how that would be 50/50".)

*... Now Showing ... (movies I've seen, rented and/or bought. I'll add ticket stubs and such here too)

*Internet Sig Lines (sometimes you just come across some funny sig lines that might be famous quotes or maybe some in-joke with the original author like the overheard conversations that just make you laugh or go "hmm?" so this place is for those too.)

*I'm hilarious... (random "me" quotes. I have my gems from time to time and I like to remember them and laugh some more later when I go over them. Yesterday's entry "I've never had to autograph my urine before.")

*Mail Call (mail I've gotten. Don't have anything on here yet since I haven't checked it but it'll probably be random packages and bills. Maybe some letters if I'm lucky. Even if I only fill it out when I get big packages it'll still be interesting to see who sent me what or what I ordered.)

*Sticker page (page of stickers I take off of stuff. I wasn't going to do this at first but then I took a sticker off a package of cookies and didn't felt like walking to the trash so I stuck it in my journal. Procrastinators unite!"

Other ideas I still need to make pages for:

*Bucket list (things I want to do/see before I "kick the bucket"... also a sort of life goals thing)
*Jobs I've applied for (like I said... trying to find a job and I've lost count of all the ones I've applied for)
*interview questions asked (sometimes I get thrown a weird curveball question that I really need to ponder on)
*Books read (I read a lot and have always wanted to keep track of this somehow. Also how many pages and if I would buy from the author again or if there's an on-going series I need to look out for)
*Myspace surveys (some are good at "getting to know you" and others are just plain stupid but still informative)
*Rants (I rant about a lot of things... lol)
*New things I've tried (foods, bath products, perfume, cleaning supplies, craft techniques, driving route to work... just all the new things I try)
*I have page/I will page/I am page (these would be filled with things from the google name game rather than personal reflections though. Basically you google your name and "has"/"will"/"is" or any like words and see what pops up. Sometimes they fit and sometimes they're insane but all are pretty funny).
*Vocabulary I didn't know (every once and awhile I come up against one I don't know so I look it up)
*What's for dinner? (things I've cooked or where we've eaten)
*internet "favorites" list (it changes so much and I add and get rid of things all the time. Another one of those "snapshot of my life interests" things)
*hole punch dots page (what a pretty way to use up paper scraps!)
*you had to be there (you know those stories that are hilarious when they happen but when you try to tell someone else about it later, they never laugh? Yeah, I have those a lot so I'm gonna start putting them in here)
*Scattergories (I love this game but can never find anyone to play with me. I think I'll just start playing by myself and write my entries here).
*Stores I've bought things from (I'm always trying out new stores online so it's nice to put those somewhere)
*things I bought for myself (it doesn't happen that often since I'm a much more "giving" person. I tend to buy a lot of things to make stuff for other people rather than just for myself so I wanted some way to recognize that I do pamper myself from time to time)

Anywho... thought some of my ideas could help inspire someone else as much as I was inspired by all of you.  :-*

I'm looking forward to working on more.

New pages to share:

I am working in four different journals right now so these are just a few of the pages I've done in one of them.  can anyone say "addicted"?  LOL

Me too!  And I used to work at Barnes & Noble, and straightening up the journals every night was my own version of hell because I wanted ALL of them.  I probably have more empty books than I could fill in a life time, but I have finally started using them for things other than journaling, and keeping separate journals for things like traveling, planning/goals for projects, keeping track of important information, and that kind of thing.  For a while, I hated even writing in the really pretty ones, because I thought they deserved to have something really pretty in them, but I figure it's better to use them then have a bunch of blank pages.  And I can always buy another one!

Hi, i'm new to this ...so hi!

I am a teacher and we seem to get through a heck of a lot of random pointless photocopying that ends up in the recycle bin, so i take the pages (all black and white) and put then in my journal as a background...sometimes i add colour to them to add a little something else, but sometimes i just leave them...either way they end up ok looking!!!

 :P

I have been lurking around this post for sometime now and have finally decided to put in my two cents worth.

I love all the ideas that people have shared, I am not a notebook kind or gal in fact I am going to use some of the ideas that i have found here and instead of using a notebook, i have a shiny new 3 ring binder and have decided to make my journal digital and printable.

I am going to print each page up and write on them after they have been printed and decorated. By doing this it allows me to move pages if I need to, and also makes it easier to write on pages that come after bulky ones. Also I can add more pages as i go along, when the binder is full (it says it can hold upto 200 sheets) then all i need to do is get a bigger binder, no need for another book.

I will post pics when i have gotten this up and running. I have plenty of free time right now because I am quite sick and can't work for at least 2 months.

Cheers

Ok so that was my last post and well i have decided that it would be to neat and planned, and I want to be spontaneous ( to a certain degree)

Here are a couple of pages that I have done and are still a work in progress.

The calendar page is basically mu work schedule and important dates to remember as well as a filler random 5 spot.

then there is my semi unfinished bucket list (AKA things I want to do before i die) i am working on it as I write this. the little number bits are supposed to be grave stones.

Hope you like so far and comments or suggestions are welcome.

Thanks so much, I do everything on a whim and well no matter how hard I try it still comes out neat and tidy.

Thats my mums fault, she used to make me hand write all my school assignments and even if one or two pages even words were not neat then i would have to start over again. I learnt to even make my messy stuff neat.

This sounds so great!!! Digital journaling freaks me out -  I guess in much the same  way papercraft scares others. Can't wait to see what you come up with!!

I am crushed.......  :'(

We had a rough couple of days weather wise and I accidentally left my journal outside and it got ruined in the rain...... Silly Me.

So I have had to start again. Much the same format as before but different in some ways. I have just had my eyes opened up to a whole new range of techniques and what not so I am incorporating some if not all of them into the new and improved (and not left out in the rain) version of my journal. Will post pics when i have shoe to show.

Here are a few pages of my new journal.

I am not suicidal or anything. Just frustrated at the time! :D Just simple cut out letters and a chainsaw with blue and red splatters of acrylic paint. The text is Dutch and kinda means: "destroy it and make a new one", at least that is what I meant with it, it is a saying that can be interpreted in many ways.

The following page was much sweeter. It is how to change things, with felt-tips and acrylics

Another unhappy one, with markers and acrylics. I guess it freed me of my Pollock period  ;)

I find it easier to journal about shitty things, it really releaves my stress and anger.

I was writing journals since several years, but it was not visual (besides one or two scribbles now and then), only writing down my thoughts - after discovering crafrster and this thread (your pages are so original and beautiful!!) started a visual journal, too... However, some years ago I wrote down the whole alphabet from a to z and tried to find a word for every letter [e.g. A would be Anatomy now, because I had a difficult test on anatomy] - some weeks ago a found this list and it was so interessting to see, which names and things were important to me at this time - so I did the same thing again and the plan is to do this every once in a while to see how things in my life are changing - maybe this little idea inspires you, too!
I will post some pics when I manage to complete a page (it's always work in progress) AND to take pictures AND learn how to post them (although I visited craftster since several month, I registered only some days ago)

oh, and by the way: please excuse my English, it's not my first language   ;D

I seriously think I was drawn to the papercrafting thread for a reason...not to go all "woo woo" but I just got some journaling books and read them seriously last night. I journaled from 11 to 20 quite seriously, (had 7 volumes) and then my ex read them all one day when I was at work. I felt so violated (sorry to sound dramatic) and have had serious issues trying to start again...I am really inspired by this thread!

It seems funny to even post this as I usually don't post like this here..been on craftster three years and just started posting this summer :) Maybe I am growing up! At 36 one hopes :)

I'm not sure everything that has been posted here (I got through about half, and love EVERYTHING posted so far).

I like to keep a few journal type books at a time, and use them for different things. My favorite one is my poetry one. I will not allow myself to write much more than poetry (though I loosely define poetry) in it. Some sketches that are relevant are allowed. The biggest part of the poetry journal is that is should fit in an average sized purse, so I can carry it everywhere. I try to write some type of poetry every day, even if it is just an interesting sentence that flows off my tongue well. The best part about it being small, is that I can't really write stories in it anyway, and it doesn't intimidate me as much. My poetry journal is my most private, as it is almost like a diary...I don't censor anything.

Another one, is a creative writing one. This one is used less often, and more often when I'm traveling. It has more sketches and stories and character ideas. When I see someone at a store, I'll jot down a character idea for them. I also write down interesting conversations I overhear. This kind of journal (for me) also tends to get a lot of junk in it, as it is a normal school type spiral notebook or a composition book. My friends will write in it or I'll just draw shapes when I'm bored. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Then I have my *sigh* "normal" journal...like a diary. I rarely ever use it unless I want to document more ordinary things. BORING.

One that I have tried in the past is one where I only use journal "starters" (like what is something you remember from childhood, or what makes you mad) and glue/tape in things I find. Here are some pictures of it.

The front was blank for awhile and it bugged me. Then I purchased a pair of "Personal Identity" jeans and used the tag for the front. I felt it perfectly explained a journal.

Here's the back.

I put a lot of quotes I like. Also, here's a list of things I was afraid of at the time (some I still am)

Something I got at a parade.

Sorry that I'm being a space-hog!  ;)

I've had problems with glued pages sticking together...any ideas?

Wow, I've spent my evening reading pages 1-29. There are some brilliant journal examples, prompts for pages & links here, and so many different styles. I'm going to go pick a journal this weekend and get started. I think mine will be a mix as I'm very much a lists person, I also have creativity and blank page anxiety so the prompts will be brilliant, giving me some organised spontaneity, if that makes sense!

Thanks for all the ideas, hopefully I'll post a few of my own once I've decided on my layouts

 :)

I just read this entire thread in the morning and I got so inspired that I can wait to get started (so inspired that I don't want to study). I started a art journal yesterday but I'll start another one with lists and text as you showed here. It'll probably something I'll use more often. The art journal will be mainly for training and etc =)
When I read the rain thing I remembered something, I'm afraid to ruin my journal because of the rain (I'm still not sure if I'll keep it always with me or not, I'm afraid someone might see it and start to make questions about it) because where I study it rains a lot and since September I had my school bag completely wet a lot of times (some notebooks look like crap). Any ideas in preventing this from happening with my journal?
I love everything posted here *-* I'll definately have a What I've learned today in my journal, I think it'll be very important. Can't wait to get started! (but I seriously need to study xDD)

I'm still not sure if I'll carry it everyday to school (afraid someone might peek on it) or if I'll more reserved entries will be coded ^^

I haven't been on this thread in TWO YEARS!  I just went back and reread everything on here, including all the newer posts and I LOVE how creative everyone is getting with their journals!

I've decided with my 2010 journal, I'm going to stick to my basic entries...I do resolve a lot that way, but in the back of my journal, I'm making the separate pages for things I learned, things that make me happy, etc.

One thing I started (for those of you who fear facing a blank page), I googled different journaling ideas and I made lists on the last few pages of my journal to help "jump start" my writing on the days that the blank page is intimidating.

And I still like the idea of a swap, if anyone's interested!  I think having someone else to respond to entries and post in pictures and little things would be a great idea and a good thing to get started!

I still LOVE this thread!  I hope everyones ideas keep rolling in!  It's very inspirational!

I felt the need to revisit and keep this thread alive!  :)

I have been very anti-writing lately, but after reviewing this thread, the gears start turning once again!  Thanks again, everyone, for the wonderful inspiration and need to write!

I found a site http://litemind.com/tackle-any-issue-with-a-list-of-100/ that I have been incorporating into my writing quite a bit.  The list of 100 things seems to really work with tackling issues and bettering my writing!  I've found that I've dedicated a few pages aside from my lists to write about certain ideas and topics from the list.  It works great when you have the "blank page" fear when trying to find a topic to write about.  I thought I'd share that!

I've started some pages, also, for little scraps from ideas in this thread.  I've been keeping receipts (for instance, the $4 bottle of water I bought at the beach which I found to be outrageous!), ticket stubs, and raffle tickets.  My father was recently diagnosed with cancer, so I've been attending a lot of Cancer Society events with him and keeping scraps from those.  I find that when I go back and look at them, they really inspire me.

Let's keep the ideas coming!!

going to throw in my two cents

so I'm not very good at writing - I feel incredibly self conscious when I do. However, I've always kept a "book" with me at all times, in different forms: sketchbook, day planner, notebook etc, and I'm constantly writing and drawing. I've finally found a name for what I do which pleases me to no end (knowing that I'm not the only one)

I usually start a page with a drawing, something relevant to the day. Today was a cup of coffee - then I just turn off my inner editor and write whatever is on my mind "looking forward to taking the kids to the park today" and go from there.

Blank page fear is HUGE for me. I didn't realize it until recently... I used to always buy notebooks with decorated pages (love Jill Bliss) or day planners because all those lines and numbers and boxes take away the anxiety for me. Now that I know what my 'problem' is I work around it. I go a few pages in advance and draw frames or boxes, put a sticker in the middle of the page, or paint a background. On other pages I use a word or phrase as a prompt - these are good to make me write as opposed to just draw.

Another thing which I found intriguing is the Listology series of books, though I've never purchased one I flip through them whenever I'm at the bookstore. I'm currently making a list book to send to my cousin to fill in.

I'm a few pages away from the end of my current book right now, so I'm organizing a swap (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=357394) to get my next one going. :)

I've always wanted to keep a journal, but I'm terrible at staying focused on one thing for very long at all (I have a new hobby pretty much every month - this month is darning XD).

After seeing all of the incredible things all of you have come up with, though, I think I'm going to try again. I think if I spend some days just being arty and some actually writing, I might actually be able to stick with it this time. :)

I have to agree with all the others who've said this thread is wonderful. I love the lists suggestion and the ideas for keeping things organized, yet not rigid (that's such a hard balance to strike!). Also love the idea of pasting/taping things into it--FINALLY, somewhere to put all the random doodles and ticket stubs and useless papers I save (can't throw them away...it's a curse!).

This really makes sense. I've never journaled (?), but I've been wanting to start an art journal for ages.
Maybe I'll begin on my next birthday! (January the fifteenth), I'm exited about this idea.

I've spent the last three nights reading through this whole thread, and it inspired me to start a journal.  One like I've never had before that is a blend of 'wreck this journal' and 'art journal' and 'visual journal' and 'scrapbook.'  I am finding it so freeing to let it be whatever will let me express myself at any given moment.  Today it was a song that I felt was speaking directly to me and made me cry.  I printed out the lyrics and pasted them in, then watercolor brushed around them until it felt right.

Yesterday I cut pics out of a catalog and talked about what it meant about me that I liked/wanted these things.  Before that, I wrote some things in a small spiral that I carry everywhere, ripped those pages out, then pasted them in and did some doodle or collage, totally sloppy and random, around them.

Oh, and the journal I used is a meditation journal (opens flat like a moleskine, yay!) I've had for years that was intended to inspire me but instead I realize it always made me feel 'less than' because I wasn't pure enough.  So I used KILZ all over the cover and spine, pasted stuff over the intro telling me how to use the pretentious thing, then wrote a little about how that all felt.  Which is much, much better.

And that is my newly begun journal!  It is titled, "I am not a real artist and this is not an art journal."

Now I really want to see your pages!

Title: Re: "What do YOU Journal About?!" Ideas thread!

Oh boy, mine?  Thanks for the interest, cherryrose.  It's hard, because they're not pretty at all.  Which for me is the point, because I'm kind of a perfectionist and very hard on myself, afraid to mess up pretty journals, etc.  (I know no one here can relate...ha ha) so it's rough.  Plus journaling brought up anger I didn't realize was boiling in there.

BUT...maybe seeing my imperfection and even a bit of my darkness may help someone else share theirs, so here goes:

The still pretentious back cover, all about The System and Your Focus is Your Reality.  Yes, this will get the KILZ treatment next.

The no-longer-pretentious front cover, totally a WIP, just KILZ and a title so far:

Putting this on the front has totally freed me from having to make it pretty or positive or perfect in any way.

These are the pages pasted in over the pretentious instructions on how to use the book:

I also pasted the original list of way to 'wreck this journal' on the very first page of the journal, to give me utter permission to mess everything up.  On the pages above, the little clipart on the left is just stuff I like, and the words in clouds are meaningful quotes from a movie, specifically "12 Monkeys", that really spoke to me yesterday.  They're about mental illness.

This is one of the pages of things I want, with scribbled reflections on why:

And these are the lyrics, "Again" by Flyleaf, which is meant to be God talking, and it seems like God talking directly to ME.  This song has played on my Pandora radio station at times when it was like God interrupting whatever crisis I was in to talk to me.  It's kind of amazing.  It ended up looking like it did because for me, it's like God speaking through the murkiest, darkest times:

That's pretty much it so far.  This journal is not something to look back on, rather something to help me find ways to express what's true for me RIGHT NOW.  I'm not limiting anything about it, though.  I could totally make a page of Favorite Things or stick in programs from my kids' concerts, etc.  I love this thing.  It makes me happy to see it propped there in my craft room, always ready to be further messed with.  :)  It's amazingly therapeutic.

I hope this expose helps others expose their un-pretty stuff too.  I also hope you were talking to me when you asked, cherryrose.  LOL!!!

Wow. You say its not pretty, but your journal is beautiful. Its not about making things appealing to other people's eye. Journaling is about capturing your raw emotion, and working through it to make sense of what you're feeling. Thats the beauty of it. Keep at it, you're doing a great job(:

Thank you, yourbest.  That means a lot to me.  I'm tearing up a little here.  I did the alphabet exercise today and it actually made me feel like someone...which was actually a part of me...was interested in how I felt about things...kinda crazy, and kinda sad...this is a very intense experience for me, it's turning out!!!

So, where are your pages these days?  ;)

Aww. I'm sorry I didn't mean to make you cry.

As for me, I'm taking a journaling hiatus. I hardly have time to do my traditional journaling. I'm so busy these days with school, my many many many extracurriculars (I have a tendancy to bite off more then I can chew.), and my boyfriend whos a full time job by himself. :P Maybe I'll make it a New Years Resolution to journal more.

No no, it was a good cry.  :)  I hope you're able to carve that time out for yourself.  It sounds like you really know much it can mean.

I was, No worries  :D

I like your journal, it's very personal. I love the text on the front. I'm a total perfectionist myself.
This would help. I've been thinking about starting an art journal for, like- forever.
But I don't dare to start. What if I mess up all the pretty pictures I tore out of magazines and kept for the last two years? It's crazy, right?  :-\

I totally get you, but it's sadder to think of them all tucked away in a pile, not being enjoyed at all.  Like all my blank pretty journals.  Plus, by the time you get them out after two years, you're a different person and will probably want to collect all new ones.  And the searching and clipping is the fun part!  And hey, there are ALWAYS new magazines!!!!  DO IT!!!!

Oh, and I realized that if I fill up my journals with stuff, even if I mess them all up, it's a GREAT excuse to go out and buy MORE...which is a LOT of the fun here!  :D

Hi, everyone - Happy Holidays.  :)  Wow, I've been so inspired by this thread -- thanks for sharing all of your ideas and pages!

I made my first journal prompts list based off of what has been posted here thus far, so thanks for all of the tips!  I'm more of an "art-journaler," myself, having started and stopped many, many, many "writing" journals over the years, but still find value in writing...now mainly combined with visual elements that are a lot more fun for me.

I journal about...anything and everything.  I like the idea of "documenting" the world and my experience in it, in creating a personal history of sorts.  I do a lot of stream-of-consciousness writing/"morning pages" and venting/clearing if something has really affected me.  I also draw/doodle a lot to illustrate emotions, and incorporate color with paint, watercolor crayons, etc.  Some of my favorite art journaling books (Creative Wildfire, Journal Junkies, Journal Spilling, True Vision) have all sorts of medium ideas and prompts that I reference from time to time, but mostly it's just about play and venting and exploring and creating/destroying on the page.

I'm immensely inspired by music, and I always journal to it (that would be a great thread -- journaling/art journaling playlists/song rec's).  A new prompt that has worked for me lately is to journal in reaction to songs that are really evocative, in the instrumentation, lyrics, and the singers' voices.

So...just for fun, my current art journaling playlist (this gets switched out with the regular shuffle of songs and my 5-star playlist, and really needs to be updated):

"Gravedigger" (Live at Radio City) - Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds
"Push" - Matchbox Twenty
"3 A.M." - Matchbox Twenty
"Bloodline" (Acoustic) - Matt Morris
"Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" - Lauryn Hill
"Wide Awake" - Kenna"What Goes Around.../...Comes Around" - Justin Timberlake
"Lover, You Should've Come Over" - Jeff Buckley
"Velvet Rope" - Janet Jackson
"Dig" - Incubus
"Ghost" - Howie Day
"Madrigals" - Howie Day
"Become" - Goo Goo Dolls
"Without You Here" - Goo Goo Dolls
"Lenders In The Temple" - Conor Oberst
"The Scientist" - Coldplay
"Blue Light" - Bloc Party
"Roses From My Friends" (Live) - Ben Harper
"DLZ" - TV On The Radio

And in response to the perfectionist note, I "suffer" from a somewhat type-A personality, but I try to embrace that quality in my art, rather than fight it.  I feel that I'd rather have experimented or expressed something that feels risky -- like, gesso-ing over collage or painting on top of what I've written -- then not to have stretched creatively -- it's interesting, trying to find balance between the comfortable/uncomfortable in art making.  I've found journaling books, workshops, and threads like this to be really helpful in getting me out of my head. Just my two cents.  :)

shanta.devi, I have to admit that I'm not really familiar with any of the songs you listed as part of your playlist, but I love the idea there! I usually organize mine by mood, so I have playlists with titles like "Perfect Rainy Day," "Makes Me Happy," and "That Funky Groove," etc.

I really love what you have to say about journaling, though, especially the bit about embracing your type "A" personality--I can relate. I'd love to see some of your pages if you're willing to share them, and I hope you get a lot out of the forums here. Welcome to Craftster!

My current journal is a very pretty one made for me by RougeRaven (her journals are fantastic) which has a mixture of lined and sketch paper. When you open it, you'll find a drawn page with hearts, a triple moon, a pentagram, "2010 - 2011 journal", a quickie doodle of myself, and my name listed over and over and over again in different forms so to speak. Basically this page is an attempt for anyone who flips through this (Which so far has only been boyfriend) as well as myself to figure out who I am.  What I mean about the name thing is it's like this:

Alison
Alison Renee
Alison Renee C----------
Alison Renee M---
Alison Renee C---------- M----
Alison Renee L----
(I didn't type out the last names because I don't feel like telling you them right now)

The story behind it is that well obviously my name is Alison, Renee is my middle name as well as my biological mother's. C------------ is my last name from until my adoption was finalized. I've never used this last name until the past year or two, I've occassionally added it into my name, and then felt badly about it because M--- is my last name, technically it always has been... in it's own way, but yeah... Haha, I'm surprised I didn't add Alison Renee S--- or Alison Renee S--- C--------- M---, using my biological father's last name as well, but I've never used it in my name. I've never felt the need to. The L---- is my boyfriend's last name, it's sort of an inside joke. Sometimes out of boredom we address each other by our full names, and he randomly uses his last name for me instead of my own last name, and we both thought it sounded good with my name, plus he's a huge part of my life, not just as my boyfriend, but as my best friend and one of the few people I can truly trust. But anyways, lately I kind of struggle with who I am and about life and other stuff.

On a different page, there's a chibi doodle of myself.

The past couple weeks I've just journaled about what went on during the day and my stress and stuff, but sometimes I like to make lists and other things. I'll probably mix things up quite a bit soon.

Since I've never actually posted pictures of my journal in this thread and I've only stalked the living daylights out of it, I figured it was my time to contribute :)

For some reason, I can't post the picture, so I posted the link instead to the Flickr account I have them on.

I didn't take pictures of every page since I'm not that artsy and some of them are pretty bland. I'll post the topics I have that I didn't take a picture of, though.

The book I used was a weird ledger book...it was from the dollar store, actually and it's HUGE! The pages are numbered and the front has a table of contents page!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5336117028/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5336117028/)
This is the front cover.  I painted it and posted magazine clippings then used packing table as a laminater! haha

The back cover

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5336122274/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5336122274/)
The inside cover.  I found a beautiful picture from a magazine and pasted it in there.  On the right is the Table of Contents page that actually came in the book.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5335508099/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5335508099/)
One page. My music discoveries page.  I post old music that I haven't heard in a while, new music, and stuff I want to download.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5335510387/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5335510387/)
My reading log.  I plan on having a million of these pages as I read A LOT! And when I go on a spree with one author, I give them their own page.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5335511827/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5335511827/)
My ME page!  I had to make a page for myself, things I learn about myself, new habits, personality quirks, whatever!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5335513069/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/5335513069/)
I dedicated a section to my dad.  He was diagnosed last winter with cancer (they think pancreatic but they weren't sure).  I created this section when I was living with him in Oct.  Unfortunately, he passed away on Veterans Day so I only got a few entries of him while he was alive, but I plan on still writing TO him.  Every one of my journals  now will have a section for him.  On the right is the tattoo outline I got for him that I have to paste.  I also plan on putting the typed entries that I blogged in his section of my journal.

OTHER SECTIONS:
Sea of Words (words I like)
Random Resources (links and books and whatever that I want to remember)
Anger Directory
Happiness Directory
Media & Happenstance
Goals
Learning Directory
Random Thoughts
A Moment of Beauty
Movies
Interesting People (That I never want to forget)
People Directory
and a few author pages.

I'm forever adding pages and stuff, too.  I find that its so much easier to have themed pages so that I don't feel obligated to sit and write for an hour if I don't want to...I just add whatever there is to add and that's it!

Hope you all enjoy!  Sorry for the extremely long post!!

I made a Christmas List (very Important you know!) and a Goals/New Year's Resolution Page for 2011!

I'm working on one called Quality Time now.

I'm hoping to do a lot more art journaling this year!

your journal is so great, i love the little boxes for the things youve learned. The thing I love about journals is that months or years later you can go back and see what your state of mind was like. I would have kept most of my journals I had when I was younger but sharing a house with nosy siblings/family is like suicide for a journaler. ahha. I try to record certain emotions that bug me through out my day, track where they came from and try to fix them. A lot of pages I have are based on interior decorating and quirky things and ideas for my own bedroom. I look through magazines and find good images and make collages. Limited on suplies at the moment, but Id love to use lots of media like felt, watercolors, pastel, anything and everything. Again, good thread and great journal! :)

I am going to start a reading journal here soon. I have never been successful with regular journaling so we will see how this goes.

I do a lot of reading so I plan on making an entry for each book I read with some questions and answers about the book and a review and maybe anything that I learned. I don't have it all mapped out yet.

shanta.devi: Thanks! I'm glad you like the stamps; I feel like they just don't get enough love!

I've been working in a new journal lately, and have been doing a lot of doodling. I thought I'd share a few of the pages here, for those who may be interested:

There are a few more in my member gallery and in my flickr. I used to have a lot of trouble getting my doodling to look right, but I was watching some of Teesha Moore's (http://www.youtube.com/user/tracyvmoore) videos on youtube the other day, and she said something that helped me a lot. She said you shouldn't ever shy away from repetition in your work because it's what makes you good at what you do. I had never thought about it that way before, but it really helped me get going, since I had been afraid before of not being creative enough. I figured if I repeated my motifs too much I would just seem boring, but not worrying about that has really enabled me to get down onto paper the ideas that I have in my head.

I just started a new journal. It's home to my creative writing. In this journal I have information for my personal enjoyment and to use as a memory bank so to speak. I also have things in there for when I suffer from writer's block..(which is usually when both of my Muses decide to take a vacation for a long period of time.. it's been a few months now, they can come back any time!) I pull out my writer's journal and look through it for idea's. I have story idea's written in there, scene descriptions, etc.. I also have a list of male and female name that I absolutely love. I have the cast of all of my favorite shows written down for when I feel the urge to scribble a fan fic or two. I also have a large Valentine heart candy box that is home to a large amount of pictures that I've cut out of magazines or printed off the web. I've pulled a pic or two out of the box, taped them into my journal and jotted down a story from the pics.

Thanks for the idea about stories from pictures. My boyfriend has asked me to help him with inspiration for stories - at the moment I have a bowl in the house, and I write prompts on slips of paper in there for him, I'll start looking out for pictures to add too.

Keeping a writer's journal will help him out alot. I have 3 3 subject composition notebooks taped together. He will be able to use it to come up with idea's and it's great when you have writer's block. I use mine alot. I have written down dreams that have turned into short stories. I carry a small notebook with me and jot down random idea's, then transfer them to my notebook with more details added to them. I have divider tabs that I use to keep track of my writing notes, etc.

Wow! The pages and ideas that everyone shared in this thread are amazing! I started reading this thread last night during a few spare minutes before bed and then laid awake all night thinking about starting a journal. So after I got off work tonight, I picked up two new notebooks (which made my husband roll his eyes because I adore notebooks, but I never seem to use all the pages) and then finished reading the rest of this thread.

So I'm going to set a goal for myself to fill a notebook instead of only use the first couple pages. It will be gratifying to see something I start get finished (because not finishing what I start is another one of my flaws) and also save some trees! I also love writing but haven't really been inspired to do so lately. When I was a teenager I wanted to become an author so maybe doing some journaling will get my creative juices flowing and I'll be able to write a book, even if only for myself. :)

I know this thread is pretty old so some of the people who posted here previously might not be around, but I was curious to know what everyone writes on their weather pages. I remember one person had posted a picture of their weather page with each day's date in a design and what the weather was like. For the people who have weather pages, do you write the weather every day? What do your pages look like?

I also really like the ideas of keeping multiple journals at once. I'm pretty obsessive compulsive about things and I really hate mixing different project notes in the same notebook. I would never be able to find anything. But before I branch out into more books, I'm going to finish one journal. Maybe what I need is to do the exact opposite of what drives me crazy simply to break myself out of the habit. Journals shouldn't be about sticking to OCD rules!

I did have an idea for my journal based on a few of the early posts. I'm going to number all the pages in my journal and the last two pages in the back will be reserved for my index. Whenever I start a new page, I'll list it in the back and write the number I wrote it on. So the next time I want to add onto that list, I can see what page it starts on. And then when that page is full, I'll start it on another page and add that page number into the index entry for that topic.

Gift journals sound like such a sweet gift. I really wish my husband liked reading, I would love to make one for him.

I ended up seperating the writing from the real life journal. My writing was getting lost within the realities of life as I found myself not writing as much as I used to. I don't get intimidated by empty pages the empty pages just make me want to write more. :) CRANBERRY: Have a blast with your new journals!

I was forever getting annoyed with not having some sort of "organized" system for my journal. Being a Capricorn I have a way of organizing EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING. So i have started using a 3 ring binder and creating individual pages as i go along, some are hand written some are art pages some a computer typed, there are pages that have been copied from books just because I liked them and things like that. The best part about it is each page can be rearranged to suit my "organization mood of the moment" (as my partner calls it...lol) I have a large envelope at the back of the folder for secret stuff and a clear pocket for things that I am not overly proud of and don't really want to add them to the folder, but they are there anyway. I have found so many good ideas just from this discussion alone and I will post pics when I get a free moment.

Thanks everyone for all the good ideas i will have plenty to journal about for many weeks to come.

 :)

Forgot to mention that i actually printed this whole thread just so I always have access to it for ideas ( Thats right all 136 pages...lol but i printed 4 per page double sided and used my new laser printer so it was rather quick.

I love craftster. It's a treasure box just waiting for me to find it's beautiful little pearls like THIS discussion thread. I have only just begun to read the entries but I'm already awed and inspired, as always.
I'm an avid journal-er (is that even a WORD? lol Journalist? Yes, that's better.) But I'm strictly a writer, no drawing cuz I simply SUCK at it  ::) I write EVERYTHING down in a journal. In fact, I have two separate journals at the moment; one for everyday use and one exclusively for THIS website, for my craft swaps and ideas for them. Mostly I write about story ideas and dialogue I have that pop into my head or I journal about my day, good, bad or indifferent. It's such a pleasure to write my thoughts down and then choose whether or not others see it. I also find great relief in being able to cross out tactless phrases and rewrite them more nicely. With speaking, it's not so easy to do that -.-UU
My advice to anybody who wants to start journaling is to start a pinterest.com account for inspiration. Seriously. It allows you to categorize things that you like nicely into as many or as little boards as you want and as you look at other people's pins, you'll find other things that you like/dislike. It's easy to edit and rearrange and you'll always have an endless supply of ideas and inspiration right at your fingertips. (Maybe I'm just crazy for saying this but...all well ^^)

I just found that Pinterest.com site! It looks absolutely FABULOUS! It's kinda like Twitter but trackable -- you know how Twitter stuff just "disappears" after linking back a million times? I dislike that.

I'm a lazy journalist -- I have a personal diary, a dream diary, a crafty-inspiration journal, a design sketchbook{for clothing/characters/Sailormoon Otaku Characters}, a drawing journal/sketchbook {I have SEVERAL THOUSAND sketchbooks...LOL}, a inspiration journal/diary/collection of random bits of fabric/paper/ads/pictures I love.... But I don't really upkeep any of them - maybe because I have so many? LOL

Wow!!!

I just realized, after reading this whole thread to here again tonight, that two years ago I stumbled upon this thread and read it start to finish and then started my first 'non-art' journal.  Today I have about ten or so, and I journal in some form every day.  This thread really changed my life!  The book I write in most often is a 5x8 hardback sketchbook that I made a cover for, that I put all my art/craft ideas and sketches into, and that I write in/sketch in every day.  I've also just started an actual sketchbook in a second 5x8 hardback sketchbook.  (These were $5 each from Michael's, "Artist Loft" brand, and I love them.  Just plain hard black covers and nice, heavy sketching paper inside, and they open up nice and flat!)  I also have a Moleskine watercolor journal, just for experimenting with watercolor painting.

I have also created four art journals, as well as a junk mail journal (lost...sad), a gluebook, and a few days ago, I got a Creative Chaos binder (an alternative to the Smash Book) from Michael's and am putting only art inspiration into it, such as techniques to try, supplies I want, supplies I buy, notes from art books I read, pieces of art that inspire me, art stores and sites I shop at, and anything else art-life related.  Half price with a coupon, this was only $6.50 and it's full of beautiful, really heavy double-sided decorative cardstock pages.  I highly recommend it, because writing on that heavy, pretty paper is inspiring, and it's a great way to save all the little stuff on a pretty background.  Plus I LOVE mini-binders and can add to and rearrange it any time I want.  I'm going to get another one and use it to journal on all the "About Me" prompts I've collected here and elsewhere.  I think it would be very therapeutic and help with self-love issues.  I may get a third one and make a Favorite Things book, which will help with life-love issues (since I deal with severe depression).

It is so sobering to me to realize that I had to call myself not a 'real artist' in order to allow myself to do any art at all, and that it happened to be exactly two years ago this month that I took this step, due to this very thread.  I now have an art blog, have done several paintings, and have created a studio space as a testament to how crucial art is to my very survival, emotionally.

I know this thread isn't about art, but it was this thread and the 'non-art' journal that it inspired in my life, that gave art back to me.  And not only do I journal now, pretty much every day, I've even learned to make my own books, which is probably my favorite thing to do right now.

And I STILL love love love the alphabet idea and have re-written it into my art/craft idea book tonight to use again and again.  I also found the thread on altered books at that same time as this one, and I fell in love with that and have been doing them ever since.  Two of the four art journals I have made are altered books.  This is the before of my newest one, a children's book:

With a title like that, it was MADE to be a journal, don't you think?  This is what I did to the cover:

I hope this thread lives forever and that lots of other people find it and begin expressing themselves in a new way because of it.  Thank you to everyone who has contributed to it over these FIVE years.

Also, I'm curious as to what you all journal IN.

5"x8" moleskine pocket notebook. lined. they're perfect - not too big, not too small.

Jillie, this is one of the most memorable posts I've ever read.  I still use your little numbering trick, and just came back here to re-read your post after all these years.  I would've been smart to keep all of my book notes in my journal with everything else!  (Since learning your page numbering system that might actually be possible.  I was always afraid if I mixed anything in, I'd never find it again.)  I have all of my book notes in separate files.  Kinda crazy.  ::)

I started a writing journal at the beginning December and it's come further than the other journals I've started. It's kind of a hybrid of my observations and thoughts along with ideas for writing and the beginnings of stories and poems.

I'm journaling on loose paper collected in a binder. It started out in a notebook but it was coming apart so I transferred it into that.

I like the idea of listing out words you like.

I often write autobiography type stuff, like:
- previous houses and cities I've lived in
- list of schools I've gone to
- hobbies
- pets I've had
- friends and people in my life and a few of their quirks
- favorite memories from different life eras
- favorite: foods, drinks, candles, perfumes, stores, restaurants, etc.

One thing I started (for those of you who fear facing a blank page), I googled different journaling ideas and I made lists on the last few pages of my journal to help "jump start" my writing on the days that the blank page is intimidating.

Googling journaling ideas is good. I cut out a journal prompt book and keep some of the prompts in my journal too.

I usually do traditional journaling with some collages etc!

In my journals, I...
- write prayers
- take notes
- poems
- my thoughts
- how the day was
- etc

Those journals are really pretty.

Is that blue one by Paperblanks?

I usually prefer 'life' journaling like this too. I wish I knew how to write poetry!
