Title: Lemon Cake and Roses
Post by: Elcoeda on August 23, 2007 06:47:44 AM

Here's a cake I made for my bestfriend's birthday. We're in France, and she asked me for an "American Cake" meaning lots of color and icings !

So I made a lemon sponge cake, two layers (I wanted three, but I over did one layer so just stuck with two), with home-made lemon curd as filling (I put a pretty thin layer, because curd is kind of sour) and I made a cooked icing for the top, but because it seemed kind of liquid, I added a layer of whipped cream on top, to cover the whole of the cake. This was actually a great thing to do, it made a Mousse-like icing in the end. I colored the top icing really yellow...

I then made some roses from marzipan, and my boyfriend made the leaves (had to let him participate or he would sulk !). Did some extra decorating (check out the pea like thingies on the side of the cake !)

I pretty proud of this cake, because I'm not really good at icings... they always seem to either melt or be too sweet !

My best friend was *really* happy !

I'm curious, what is a "French" cake?  Do the French not celebrate birthdays with cakes?  Please pardon my ignorance.

Elcoeda, your cake is soooo nice ! I love the roses !
To BoxOfRrocks : well, a french cake wouldn't have so much icing and very little unnatural colors on it (I mean green, deep yellow or red and never ever blue or violet !). We stick to classic : chocolate icing or coffee or plain white. Wedding cakes are sometime a bit more decorated, with marzipan. But I for myself like decorating, but my guest are never fond of icing, so I give it up !

It's lovely!  How can anyone not like icing!  oops!  I guess my american is showing!  ;D  Seriously, I had no idea that very decorated cakes were an american thing.  It makes sense, I just never thought about it!  Thanks for bringing it up!  Now I know!

wow that looks good! and I don't really like frosting either, too sugary. I usually just mix a tub of whipped topping with a small packet of instant chocolate pudding mix. It's yummy without being overpowering. Kinda limits the color options tho...   :P
