Title: Two new sweaters!
Post by: CrafterInIL on August 07, 2007 07:44:50 PM
I knit these two sweaters with the basic top down raglan pattern in the knitalongs.  This was such an easy and quick knit - I definitely plan to make more.

First one knit with Martifil stripes:

Second knit with a cotton/ecospun yarn I picked up at a fiber fest for 99 cents a skein (used 4 skeins):
Turtleneck all the way up:

Folded down:

Thanks for looking!

Wow!  I really love the first one.  I've never done a sweater top down.  I really should learn.

Thanks!  They're both really cozy.  The sleeves are a bit long on the stripey one, but it works out perfectly for the ribbed cuffs to be turned up (one of them wasn't turned correctly because I was in a rush to get out of the sweater in this 90+ degree heat!).

This is such an easy sweater pattern for a beginner to try or for an easy quick knit for any level.  The striped sweater is knit with Martifil, which is a chunky yarn and I think this was done in under a week with knitting a few hours a day.  The second took a bit longer, but it's a simple pattern.

I really like both of those, but I love the stripy one!  Good colour choices, and it looks really good on you.  It looks very comfy but flattering at the same time.  I might think of trying out that pattern myself!

The construction is ingenious for the raglan topdown, but can be a tad tedious. Good way to learn though.

Those look great!  Did you do any shaping as they look so nice and fitted around the waist area?

Thanks for posting the link - I should have done that.

I did do waist shaping on both of these - I did the shaping suggested in the pattern, which I believe was decrease once every 5 rows 5 times then increase once every 5 rows 5 times.

It's a perfect project to do while watching TV.

:)Well done.  I love both jumpers. Did you follow a pattern? Please can you share your pattern. If you followed the top down jumper with pattern, how did you get the that lovely neckline on the striped jumper.

I did use the basic top down raglan pattern.  The Martifil yarn used for the striped sweater was a bulkier yarn than called for in the pattern, so I ended up casting on what the pattern recommended and that gave me a wider neckline.  It also made it quite a quick knit, which was a bonus!  That's the beauty of this pattern -- you really can use a variety of yarns for this pattern.

For the turtleneck, I ended up casting on about half the recommended number of stitches, but that was trial and error -- I kept frogging and restarting until the neck was how I wanted it to feel.

I am not a knitter, but I wanted to comment on your lovely sweaters...  :)  They are both gorgeous- the black and white looks so soft and chunky-warm but also still flattering.  And the first is the exact colors of my living room chair (I bought for the color)  :D  Anyhow, thought I'd comment- looks great!

Both of your sweaters turned out fabulous. I'm especially fond of the striped one.
I originally printed off that same pattern but, I never started the sweater. The reason was that, I was unsure of how to make it into a long sleeve version like you did.
Do you have any advice for a fairly newbie, on how to do the long sleeve version? I didn't want to make it a short sleeve sweater, like what was shown.
I'd really appreciate any advice that you could give me, for making the long sleeve version.
Great job!   ;D

Thanks all for the lovely comments!

queen_geuneviere - for the long sleeve versions, all I did was follow the sleeve instructions in the pattern and when they felt cozy around my arm, I just stopped doing decreases and knit straight.  I have fairly thin arms, so this worked for me.  I'd suggest just doing the decreases and trying it on as you go.  The pattern is really easy to follow.

These are very lovely!!  You make me want to become a knitter. :)

Hopefully this doesn't sound weird or offensive, but you have the perfect hourglass shape. *jealous*

Thanks so much CrafterInIL, for your help with the sleeve issue.
I had asked for help about that at the original knitalong, but nobody answered that question for me. I appreciate you taking the time, to let me know what I should do.
I also have thin arms. So what you did for long sleeves, should also work for me. I made a note on the pattern, so I'll know what to do when I get to that point.
Thanks again, and your sweaters turned out lovely.   ;D

What lovely sweaters!!!  I have a basic question -- how did you make the stripes on the arms come out so perfectly symmetric??  Did you find the colorway at a certain point and just use that as your guide?  That assumes that the dyeing was done pretty consistently too....

I can never figure that part out!

Thanks for sharing,
L

I did start the arms at the beginning of the same color and it worked out well.  All of my skeins were from the same dyelot, and I probably got a bit lucky along the way.  Through the body of the sweater I saw how the skeins and colors were going, so I was able to assume how they would end up on the sleeves.

I LOVE the first sweater. The shaping makes it! Well, that and the stripes-who can resist them!
