Title: knitted version of a friend's photo *with basic pattern*
Post by: toki45 on July 29, 2007 07:54:40 AM
This is definitely not my first knit, but its my first post on craftster. My friend asked for a knitted version of himself that he could cuddle with. He was mostly kidding, but I love an excuse to knit so I found the most embarrassing picture of him I could and re-created it. I think it's hilarious  ;D but for the record, he's putting stuff on his inner legs to prevent chafing when he skimboards, not touching himself inappropriately. Oh, and I'm going to finish decorating the shorts later.

I made up the pattern as I went, but I took notes so I can write it out if anyone wants me to.
Thanks for looking!

Pattern: This is just for the doll's body; the eyes, mouth and clothes you can personalize to what you want. Also, this is stuff-as-you-go, so make sure youve got all your stuffing in before a section gets too hard to stuff (like stuff the head before you knit the neck)

Materials:
-I used cheap walmart yarn (red heart super saver worsted weight, 7oz/364 yds) for my main color and hardly made a dent in it
-size 5 dpns (completely inappropriate for the yarn, i know, but i didnt want the doll to be huge. I would probably try for a thinner yarn if i were to do this again, but the thicker yarn does ensure that there wont be any gaps for the stuffing to poke through)
-other colors of yarn for eyes, mouth, hair, etc
-size F crochet hook (the size isnt too important)
-tapestry needle
-stuffing

Head:
Cast on 6, spread evenly between dpns
Row 1: join, being careful not to twist the needles. Knit in front and back of each stich around (12 sts)
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: *K1, yo*around (24 sts)
Row 4: K1 in front, k1 in back around
Row 5: *K2, yo* around (36 sts)
6: *K2, k1 in back* around
7: *K4, yo around* (45 sts)
8: *K4, k1in back* around
Rows 9-16- Knit
17: K, at some point in this row emboss 4 sts across for 6 rows (for ex, k16, turn work p4, turn work k4, turn work p4, turn work k4, turn work p4, pick up 4 loops on WS of work from row 17 directly below the 4 stitches youíve been working back & forth and knit each stich and picked up loop together, knit 29)
Rows 18-26: knit
Row 27: *k3, k2tog* around (36 sts)
Row 28: Knit
Row 29: *K1, k2tog* around (24 sts)
30: Knit
31: K2tog around (12 sts)
32-34: Knit

Body (continued from head):
35: kfb around (24 sts)
36: Knit
37: *K2, yo* around (36 sts)
38: *K2, knit in back* around
39: [K8, yo, k1, yo]x4
40: Knit, knitting in back of yarn overs
Continue raglan increases until 60 sts (if this is confusing, check out the anthropologie inspired capelet, its about the same thing but im twisting the yarn overs so there arenít any holes)
Next row: knit, but skip and place arms on scrap yarn (the nose will be over the chest and the arms will be the sections on either side) so that the body and arms are separated (once again, if confused, check out the anthropologie inspired capelet)
Knit 10 rows
place sts on scrap yarn

arms (I did the arms at this point for stuffing reasons):
Pick up sts from scrap yarn, spread between dpns
Knit 15 rows
Row 16: Dollís left arm- k4, m1, k1, m1, k10 (right arm- knit 10, m1, k1, m1, k4) (this is assuming you started your row at the armpit)
17: Knit
18: Left arm- k4, m1, k3, m1, k10 (right arm reverse, as above)
19: k4, place next 5 sts on holder, cast on 1, knit 10 (reverse for right arm)
20-23: knit
place sts on scrap yarn (I stopped here to do the thumb so that I could more easily stuff the thumb)

thumb-
1: k5, pick up the 1 cast-on stitch
2-5: knit
6: k2tog around
break yarn and draw through sts

back to arm-
Knit 5 rows
k2 tog 7 times, k1
k2tog around
break yarn and draw through loops
knit other arm.

Legs:
Split body in half (15 sts per leg)
Each leg knit 20 rows in the round
Now imagine that the leg was divided with 8 sts in the fron and 7 in the back. Knit to middle stitch of back (including that stitch) then [slip 1, move yarn to right side of work, turn, move slipped stitch back, move yarn to wrong side of work] p2, [repeat what was in the brackets], k3, [Ö], p4, [Ö], k5, [Ö], p6, [Ö], k15
Knit 10 rows
k2 tog 7 times, k1
k2tog around
break yarn and draw through loops

ears (make 2)-
cast on 3
1: knit
2: purl
3: knit1, m1, k2
4: purl
5: k1, m1, k3
6: purl
7: knit
8: purl
9: ssk, k1, k2tog
10: p
bind off

that was the left ear, you can do a mirror image for the right ear but for me they ended up looking about the same anyways

Finishing:
There's going to be a diamond shaped gap between the legs. I fixed it by taking a shortish piece of matching yarn and knitting a diamond into it ( I started at one end by picking up a stitch between the the stitches where the legs split, and at the end of each row I attached it to the doll with duplicate stitch using the needle) but if this is too confusing or too much hassle, you could knit a small diamond and sew it in. I forgot to take notes for that part but I remember I started with one stitch, increased to two, then three, then decreased back to one. I can't recall if I knitted plain rows between increase rows (and the doll has gone to it's new home so I can't check), but I'm sure you can look at the size of the gap and determine how long to make it. It's important to fill this gap and not just sew it shut if you don't want his legs to be right next to each other.
Using matching yarn sew on ears where you like them. Add eyes, eyebrows, and mouth with duplicate stitch.
To do the hair, I cut different lengths of yarn (shortest for back of head, longest on crown of head, in between above ears) folded them in half, and used the crochet hook to pull them through stitches in my doll's head, then pulled the ends through the loops. It's like those hook rugs. I tried to follow the same pattern that hair actually grows in.

So, I hope that pattern was understandable, its my first try at this. Let me know if anything needs to be cleared up. I'm so happy that people like this, for once I'm not getting teased for my knitting!! :D

This is the hardest I have laughed at a craft in a LONG LONG time.  I am just learning to knit so was checking out the board and BAM!  A doll with his hands down his shorts.

I don't know what is more mortifying, the fact you have this picture and crocheted a "mini-me" or the fact that the picture is all on the internet for all the crafty to see, without him knowing! lol

Great job!

That is awesome!!!
And a really really good design too... how long did it take you to make?  Did you just wing it or draft it out first?  How long have you been knitting?  Love love love it.  Please post a pattern so I can see how you did it!

Title: Re: knitted version of a friend's photo *with basic pattern*
Post by: toki45 on July 29, 2007 07:01:28 PM
uh I guess it was a mix between drafting and winging it? I didn't write anything out but I figured a round head, and embossed nose, raglan shaping to make the torso/arms, hands similar to mittens, and short-row shaping to try to make heels/feet. and then I came up with the numbers as I went by just trying to keep things proportional.

oh yes, of course! He thought it was very funny and "amazing," he did mention that it might be creepy had he not asked for it though. He says he will cuddle with it (since thats why he requested it) but i'm pretty sure he was lying. Cuddling with yourself isn't really most people's dream. Unless you really, really like yourself i guess. He did want to show it off to his mom and sister though, and said he'd definitely bring it to school with him.

Nice rendition of the photo.  I just wish people would quit referring to Acrylic yarn as 'cheap walmart yarn'.  Not all acrylic yarn is cheap nor can you only find it at Walmart.

I didn't mean any offense to the yarn or its fans, I was just referring to the fact that it was cheap (definiton: Relatively low in cost; inexpensive or comparatively inexpensive), and I bought it at walmart.
