Title: Beer can costumes...
Post by: SeasonKay on July 12, 2007 07:15:38 AM
Last fall I was asked to be a designer in a fashion show charity fundraiser sponsered by a local non-profit thrift store. I jumped into the project with both feet and created four costumes out of aluminum beer cans, pop tops and recycled clothing. Everything turned out great! AND I made over $1000 for the fundraiser. It was an honor after all that hard work.
Here are some photos of my designs on the runway.

The royal court. The queen was pulled out on a chariot.

I made this costume out of PBR cans and pop tops. It turned out so good. Aluminum is surprisingly simple to sew on a machine.

Me and the queen.

Wow. Color me seriously impressed. :D

Reminds me of one of my favorite kitschy craft books from the 70's!

Wow! These are really tremendous!

Is the corselet made from the tabs? Like chainmail?  Love to see close ups of that.

And all the foundations are found items from the thrift store?

And who drank all the PBR?  ::)

And who drank all the PBR?  ::)

And how long did you wait between drinking all the PBR and crafting! :D

Don't Drink and Craft!  ;D

Some of my most embarrassing things hidden in the back of my closet are the result of a beer too far!  It's not so much the ideas, but the irregular skill to complete it. ouch.

But if you ever need any help with your next beer can project, just let me know. ;)

Thanks for the wonderful comments. Actually, I don't drink beer. I'm more of a cocktail girl. I left that up to my boyfriend Jason and my friend Larry. I only had four months to complete the costumes so I felt completely overwhelmed at times. But the end result was worth it.

I don't think I'll be doing anything else with beer can for awhile. I've had my fill (no pun intended). But if anyone else wants to take on a aluminum can project feel free to email me with any questions. I can give you the dos and don'ts.

I did crochet the pop tops together to make chain-mail. Unfortuneatly, I don't have any close up photos of it. It worked out very well though. It's very moveable and stretchy.  The chain mail was a process of trial and error. I had to figure out what would work for the costume. I only used a chain stitct and it's all in how you put the tabs together. It's complicated at first but if your patient, you can figure it out.

Thanks again!

Here are some more photos of my line at the fashion show.

ballerina in progress. My model was only 4'9" tall and aproximately a size 0-2. The dress that I wanted to use was floor length and size 6. I had to do a bit of altering.

I loved making this cloak. It was a lot of fun.

My boyfriend made the Chariot. He used some old schwinn handle bars and bike wheels that he found at the landfill, hockey sticks for the handles and pipe to form the shape (it even had two beer holders). He's very talented.
