Title: Completed Bellydance costumes (cabaret)
Post by: Buggirl on June 21, 2007 07:02:35 PM
This is going to be image heavy, it's been a few years since I posted regularly here and my crafting has not slowed in the meantime.

I'm a bellydancer on the side, and while I now have the income to buy new costumes I usually either buy used fixer-uppers or make my own now. I'll breakthis post into two, one for cabaret styled costumes and one for more casual costumes. These are all built from hard-cups and built up from there. I'm happy to answer any questions about process. I also blog about my costuming obsession ( and many obsessions) at parasitegirl.livejournal.com (you'll want to click on the costumes tag, because I write daily and most of it isn't costumes)

This is my most recently finished bedlah (belt and bra) I bought the hard cups from sugarpetals.com, covered them, and built the bra. I drafted a pattern for the belt constructed a base in flet and interfacing.

All the beadwork is my original design, and the fringe was done by hand. I bought the skirt.

Before that I made a new belt for one of my existing bra and belts so the set could be used with a wider range of skirt styles.

And between the two I built a bra and base for a coin cover set I7d bought used and fixed up. This helped me get in touch with my swearing at needlenose plier skills.

(in progress)

And I am currently working on a tribaret set (and doing some comissions for three local tribal style dancers):

Thanks!
The detailing is why I don't take comissions for my work. I've explained to local dancers "If I charged you the hours it takes to bead these? You'd find it cheaper to hop on a plane to Egypt and get one made there!"

The Tribaret is the first time I've embraced using pre-made elements such as cheap acrylic beaded fringe to cut down on time.

All of these pieces are absolutely stunning!  You must have the patience of a saint to deal with all those fiddly little bits of bead and fringe work.

May I also just say that you have the perfect body?  Wow.

Congratulations on a fabulous job!

Do saints spend a lot of time muttering and swearing?
I have the stubborness of a thousand ornary donkeys is what I have.

As for the body, one part good genetics and equal parts lots of dance and hot yoga (I do hot yoga 3 times a week, mostly to help protect my body from possible dance injury) but I have the eyes of the almost blind and broncial tubes with counter-terrorist tendencies to balance the nice outsides.

(I'm personally jealous you don't get the little roly-poly piece of fat under your bra strap round your ribcage that I simply cannot get rid of, if I want my bras tight enough to actually fit)

I really feel the need to debunk the patience. It comes from obsesive desires...nothing else. There is more of a costume selection in Japan than there used to be, but it tends to be too pricey and a size too small...and not in the retro-styles that I like (like the classic coin bra).

But I have to say, the coin costume is heavy.

I have an occasional duet partner who is tribal, so when we duet we go coins for me, kuchi for her and similar skirt/pants combos.

The tribaret has been fun, but looking at kuchi items on-line...DANGER! DANGER!

Oh my god, I love it all and you may say you don't have patience, but my dear you do or you would have given up a long time ago. I love all the costumes and the video. I'm an older person and my neighbor had a dvd on belly dancing and it's good exercise right. Well my joints told me I should have tried this when I was in my 20's and not wait until the arthritis tells me the joints won't stand for this. I bow down before you, you are truly an artist.

I just got branded a "Filthy little git" by my own mother for admiring your costume. And I was so innocently doing it too! So I have nothing to lose now by posting, I guess.  ;D

I think they're fantastic. As aforementioned, that bead work is just awesome. They're certainly something to be very proud of.

And if my mum reads that previous line, I'm referring to the costumes.

Great work!  ;D

I wanted to kill for a costume in a similar color once. I was second in line for an AMAZING used costume. I fell for it, hard. I dance under the stage name Ozma, and it was like the emerald city for me. I waited a week, didn't get it, and hit the fabric stores in search of the right color to make my own. It's not that popular a costume color choice so I figured, make or go without.

Sorcha

I lean toward a very earthy (tribarety) cabaret and increasingly turkish-rom...but sometimes still lust for clean Egyptian lines. I can't justify buying new/used elegant Egyptian costumes which is why I make them...and then have to modify my dance style to suit them.

After the tribaret I plan to make a simple, elegant costume in champagne colored satin with ruching (sp?) and rhinestones accents to go with a nummy champagne skirt I bought...which will mean returning to a more theatrical Egyptian style for when I wear it.

I absolutely postively love these. I can't imagine the level of  your stubornness. These really rock.

I realized that I had insane sweatshop-stubborness when one day I found myself copying an Egyptian applique no doubt made by actual costume sweatshop workers.

I multi-task like crazy to stay sane during the process. I watch movies, listen to audio-books, bring the beads to work between classes, and when in a total frenzy I have been known to bead while commuting on the train (while listening to audiobooks)

(sweatshop skills)

(The whole saga of modifying a costume once I realized that I had bought an amazingly unflattering used costume and didn't have the heart to resell it to an unsuspecting person)

The defugging comes before my other posted costumes in my costume history.

Good job, yes, it rocks.

For larger shows we usually hire a local professional photographer (the begging picture I posted is from a show). I have been debating when I will be hiring him studio photos. These costumes and the amount of make-up I put on when I wear them WILL be documented for the future...and for my mom who loves it when I send her photos and performance dvds.

I totally want to have "look at what a sexy babe I was at 30" photos for my old age.

I am really itching to do a pro-shoot with the coin costume, something retro echoing 60's and 70's album covers, but that's going to take finding juuuuust the right photographer. The one I know  personally who would be best for the job is back in America...

Seeing that first one was reassuring-but it was very good, too. My daughter dances and she's been begging me to sew her a costume. These are all very inspirational. It will have to go closer to the top of the must craft list! BTW-what would a Turkish-Rom costume look like? I love Rom music :)

Seeing that first one was reassuring-but it was very good, too. My daughter dances and she's been begging me to sew her a costume. These are all very inspirational. It will have to go closer to the top of the must craft list! BTW-what would a Turkish-Rom costume look like? I love Rom music :)

Tricky question actually. Performing Turkish-rom dance on a stage or for an audience automatically involves some fusion and alteration. Turkish-rom dance is very much alive as a social dance. Footage of Turkish-rom parties show everyone dancing but usually in street clothing (long skirts, normal t-shirts and tank tops, and something quickly tied around the waist). The moment you start performing that outside of a social setting of peers dancing you start making movements larger as to be better seen, and the clothing gets more dramatic. You fuse. It gets more “Turkish oriental”.

There are many Turkish-rom dancers who perform in Turkey (I can’t check the clip right now but I think it is Reyhan, one young rom dancer who is becoming more popular in Turkish circles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCdX4QlO4c4&mode=related&search= ) and in typical Turkish bellydancer, glitz and alll. There are those who find a middle ground (Sema Yildiz, who isn’t Rom but spent her life influenced by local Rom http://www.semayildiz.com/gallery.html) and then there are more folksy versions like Artemis Mourat she tends to go folksy or just performs it straight up in Turkish bellydance costumes (http://www.serpentine.org/artemis/artemis.htm)

Artemis is a good source of historical info on dance roots.

For Turkish folk outfits, Ahmet Luleci has a nice little gallery:
http://www.luleci.com/pictures.html

In general, voluminous skirts (although “skirt dancing” is an American phenomena that comes more from Flamenco than Turkish-rom), simple fringed Turkish bra and belt, and sometimes a Turkish vest or more folksy tops.

Turkish rom music is seductive. I've been lucky enough to take lessons with Artemis, Sema, and Ahmet Luleci
I either dress it way down if it’s a dancer-for dancer event or else I break out the more earthy tribaret look and big skirts, knowing that I am taking liberties and doing Turkish-Rom-oriental.

P.S. the downtimes at work that allows me to write replies like this are the same downtimes that give me beading time...

Because of the great replies I've had, I give you more links:
Bellydance costuming links:

My favorite site for construction advice, even though I’m not crazy about her designs and I often use slightly different materials it is the first place I look when I have a basic question:
http://www.nadyas-sewing-instructions.de/indexe.htm

This is where I got my first book on covering pre-existing into cabaret bras (Embellished bras: basic techniques) good easy-to-follow pictures and instructions. : http://www.davina.org/

Source for books and info. I don't own them but I like what I7ve seen.
http://www.costumegoddess.com/

For personal inspiration and instruction, Sarah Skinner is amazing. She's complemented a few of my costmes, which blows me away.: http://www.bellydancer.info/s_costumes3.html

Shira’s costuming links, all good:
http://shira.net/links.htm#CostumeLinks

Tons of patterns and ethnic patterns, but international shipping was an issue lastime I looked so I've never used them:

Great links, thanks! Even when I was starting to get the hang of the dance, I never partisipated in a hafla/recital -- far too shy. But I actually love having some of the basic gear to go to class in, and many of the clothing elements are great for hot weather around the house.

The artemis link in particular is inspiration to get my weight back in it's proper realm.

(Yes, I know -- one of the things I most love about near eastern dance is that it suits a curved, voluptuous figure; I find that undulations look best with some flesh present to really ripple.  But I'm just plain unhealthy, and that's a different thing.  ;) )

I am really itching to do a pro-shoot with the coin costume, something retro echoing 60's and 70's album covers, but that's going to take finding juuuuust the right photographer.

Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous!  Both your costumes and your dancing!  And you would look perfect on one of those 60's/70's album covers!

God, I can't wait till I can dance half as well as you!

That's so nice of you to say. I've really been reluctant about putting any videos of myself on-line, but when I was editing footage for the collective of dancers I work with I figured it was about time.

These are just stunning costumes!!! :D :D :D

I'm a huge fan of bellydancing and the costumes alone...the only thing I've made was a hip scarf...I'll post it up later though.

Gorgeous! I especially love the extreme-coin set.

I'm a tribal dancer myself and I would totally go to you for commissions. Seriously, your work is gorgeous!

Wow. You are fantastic! I'm definitely adding you on LJ. I am a tribal bellydancer (with some background in Egyptian/Caberet) and am getting into costuming as well.

I especially love the gold set with the pink skirt. It's lovely and pretty. The purpleish coin set is stunning. I also really like how colourful your tribal set it. I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Your costumes look awesome! I just started making my own costumes as well, because they are so expensive. You are inspirational and your solos are awesome!
