Title: Crochet Coffee Cup Cozy (16 oz) with tute
Post by: mk_carroll on June 18, 2007 02:17:19 PM

More of a recipe than a pattern:
For a 16 oz. takeout cup:
With worsted weight yarn and a G hook, chain 30.  Join into a ring and hdc into each chain.  Increase 2 sts every other round (e.g. inc 1, hdc 12, inc 1, hdc rem), checking the fit every once in a while, working a plain round to tighten it up if necessary. I like a cozy about 6 rounds high.  Stretchy yarns like wool need fewer increase rounds - increasing 2 sts every third round might do the trick.  If you want it to fit lower, start with a shorter foundation chain.

On the left: Blue Sky Alpacas Dyed cotton in expresso, lemonade, honeydew, and sky.  On the right, unidentified scrap wool in pink, Blue Sky Alpacas Dyed Cotton in poppy orange.

I gave one as a small thank-you gift to a barista who makes me awesome dirty chai lattes (chai latte with a shot of espresso).  Barista was delighted, showed it around, people made many positive comments on it.  I need to remember not to downplay my skills - sure, it's something I just whipped up with scrap yarn and an empty takeout cup...but I don't have to say that.  I can just smile and say thank you.

I'm a barista and would LOVE to receive a gift like this from a regular! That was super thoughtful and I'm way impressed...plus, freakin' adorable!

P.S.... GREAT way to cut down on waste, frequent coffee drinkers go through those cardboard sleeves like crazy!

Great job on these! I love your colors.

I've been making these for a little while with all intentions of selling them in my local coffee shop. Getting around to actually packaging them and selling them, however, has taken me much longer than it took me to figure out the pattern!

One thing I do is make a bunch in single colors, and then add surface embroidery / embellishments. (I spill my coffee WAY too much, so I'm making a bunch in chocolate brown w/ bright colored accents for all of those fellow coffee-spillers).

i'm making this right now for a friends birthday tomorrow, so what if its one in the morning....
i think that i'm going to try and incorporate functional buttons into mine, so i guess i wont complete it in the round and make a couple of extra large chains at the end!
i am compelled to use these really cute oversized woodgrain buttons i got!
this is such a cool idea ;D

Thanks so much for the pattern.
I'm just addicted to any drink that has espresso so I really need to make some of these!

I love that idea! What a simple (and fashionable) way to cut down on waste. I'm going to have to whip up a few of these for myself and my fellow coffee junkies...

Wow these are great!!  And thanks for the pattern.  ;D  What a good excuse for me to learn how to do a half double crochet stitch...  and what good presents my coffee and tea drinking friends will be receiving.  Lovely colors!  The first one is just striking with the pastel and the dark combined.

I couldn't resist! I had to make my own!!! :D The red and grey ones are for the "short" cups, and the pink and brown is for the "venti" and "grande" cups. :)

This will work fine with any yarn - I use whatever scraps I have on hand.  Yours look great!

I'm a barista, too, and I've been trying to make one for all the coffee slaves at my store. I swiped the idea out of a book called Knit Like a Manor something like that...

I've switched the pattern up a little, though. I do the whole thing in tunisian/afghan/idiot/whatever so that I can embroider people's names on them easily. My experimentation has also lead to double-thick ones for people who order extra hot drinks, reversible ones, and (my favorite) little stash pockets for whatever.

I'm so happy so many people are picking this little number up...it's so quick and good for waste-reduction.

Thank you so much for the pattern! This is a great stash buster.

Here's mine! I made it for Kiwi-Chickie in an astrology swap (she's a Taurus). I added a row or two to the top and bottom:

This is perfect! I was looking for a project that used hdc. Thanks so much, I'll be linking to this. Now I also have a great excuse to get my husband to bring me a coffee on the way home. I need to "measure." =)
