Title: [ACCEPTED] City Guides for crafters .... What about Latinamerica?
Post by: ziabox on June 04, 2007 05:24:41 PM
Please remember to communicate in English on this (and all other threads on Craftster).

I actually dont know how many members of crafter are from latin america but there must be tons, i hope  ;)
I'm from Mexico, and on the section of boards of guides of the world i just dont see anything on Latinamerica.
I'm taking a trip south in a few weeks and a city guide would've been just great to know where to get great crafty stuff from the places i'm visiting.

I agree with this! I was looking for info on Peru when I went and there wasn't a craftster board for it. It would be great!

Una voz mas para un foro/board para Latinamerica (y latinamericanistas como yo)! I have no craft vocabulary in spanish (I speak spanish poorly in general, tambien), so it would be useful to me for that reason, too.

I also think this board is an important addition to craftster, not just for natives to latin america but also for those who will travel there, move there, or are just interested in that part of the world.  After all, this website is a community, no?

No harm. :) :D  It just makes my workday longer when I have to paste everything into a translator to see what you guys are requesting. :D

Title: Re: City Guides for crafters .... What about Latinamerica?
Post by: lindsoriah on February 29, 2008 08:16:55 AM
If you want, from now on if we see one we can paste the quote and the translation as best we can. I'm mostly volunteering myself, but anyone could do it.

This thread isn't that active and i always check it if I see new replies.

Post by: sweets4ever on February 29, 2008 08:19:50 AM
Aww, that's so nice of ya!

It's probably best just to stick to English on Craftster as a general guideline, though. :)

Title: Re: City Guides for crafters .... What about Latinamerica?
Post by: lindsoriah on February 29, 2008 09:16:52 AM
gotcha. i do understand. i guess it's different from the asia board because here everyone pretty much speaks the same language!  although there's probably some brazilian or surinamese crafter out there who would appreciate english too.

Title: Re: City Guides for crafters .... What about Latinamerica?
Post by: jordyca on February 29, 2008 10:38:55 AM
so, what happens now? we requested, what should we wait for? more participants? how many do we have to be? it's like i don't know what we should do now.

Title: Re: City Guides for crafters .... What about Latinamerica?
Post by: sweets4ever on February 29, 2008 10:48:01 AM
There isn't too much more you can do now. :)  If you have friends that you think would enjoy a new board such as this, PM them and ask them to post their "vote" here.

Leah and I monitor all request threads and install new features/boards when we feel it's a fairly popular request.

Title: Re: City Guides for crafters .... What about Latinamerica?
Post by: jordyca on February 29, 2008 10:53:04 AM
ok, thanks. buts i still have a question, lets say we get a lot of participants and finally the board is made.. could we be able to talk in Spanish inside the board? sometimes I have a hard time trying to understand a pattern or an instruction made in English, since is not my first language, and i don't know all the crafts terms in English. so, could i be able to ask for help in spanish? or only English?

Title: Re: City Guides for crafters .... What about Latinamerica?
Post by: sweets4ever on February 29, 2008 11:05:13 AM
Well, City Guide boards aren't focused on general craft discussion.  They are for thrift stores, craft stores, crafty happenings, etc. local to the area.  They're also to discuss local/regional happenings such as events, meetups, craft fairs and those sorts of things.  If you have questions about a pattern or instruction in English, you can post them on the main boards.

It's best to stick to English on the City Guide boards as well because they serve as wonderful information centers for those who are travelling to your area.  Our admin and moderators need to be able to understand what it being discussed on the threads as well.

Title: Re: City Guides for crafters .... What about Latinamerica?
Post by: mirchita on February 29, 2008 04:33:07 PM
well, but we always can made a two languages comment right? certainly sometimes it is so difficult to post in english for us, whom have not english as our first language... and I am pretty sure that there people who are just looking because of it.... so I wonder if this can be helpfull, what do you think?

Title: Re: City Guides for crafters .... What about Latinamerica?
Post by: sweets4ever on February 29, 2008 05:05:28 PM
If there's something you can't figure out how to communicate well in English, I don't think it would be a problem to post it in another language or try to post it in both languages.  Just do the best that you can.  Everyone is pretty understanding. :)  Posting solely in another language shouldn't be common practice on Craftster, though.

Title: Re: City Guides for crafters .... What about Latinamerica?
Post by: calluna on February 29, 2008 05:18:01 PM
I agree that it is easier/clearer to get thoughts out first in the language in which we think, and then translate it. Other bilingual people could look at both and clarify the English-version if necessary. I think that if you can't find the word or phrase you need in English, and there are people who speak your first language here who could help, you need to be able to ask the question in your language to get the right answer.

I do think there should be a particular place/board/thread for this, rather than having multiple languages pop up in the middle of threads. I think art/craft Spanish language translations could be a "sticky-note" thread in the Latin American City Guides board. I think that would be of interest to lots of people, for various purposes.

I'm going to see if there's been discussion about this for Asian or European languages, since they already have City Guides boards...We need a crafty speaker-of-multiple-languages (is that what a "polyglot" is?)!

You could do that and put a link to it in your signature line here, if you wanted.  There are a variety of things you could do such as a MySpace group, Yahoo group, Facebook Group, Flickr, email mailing list, etc.

Please don't associate Craftster in any of your group titles as we aren't affiliated with them.

Gosh, I'd love a city guide for Latin America, specially because we normall don't have JoAnns or any of those other repeatedly mentioned stores, ..most of the time we don't even have decent thrifts stores! (Too expensive most of the time!-For secondhand clothing that is..)

So It'd be great to share some tips and such...

Penlowe, here in Mexico I have found Patrones magazine in WalMart sometimes, but it was very irregular... so I went to the first page of a magazine, and there I found some tel numbers, and I call to ask for it... and guess what.. there where a way to get a suscription for it in my country!!! (Mexico) and I have been suscribed for two years  ;D very good investment by the way, but I didnt get this year suscription, because I have too much magazines for now, much more patterns than I could use (great I know!) but my husband doesnt see that way  :-\
well, I think I must post the numbers for you to call if you want to:

Barcelona: 935 087 100
Mexico: 5662 78 00
Holanda y Belgica: 31227 54 13 70

I hope it have been usefull.

Hi, guys!

Could we limit comments/replies here to posts for a new Regional Board, please?  It's awfully hard to keep track of these threads with off-topic and random chat being mixed in with the actual votes.

If you've already expressed your desire for a new board, please continue crafting and if there is one implemented, you'll be the first group to know! :)

Well I've gone through all of the post, and I found this info--->
currently, In this thread there are
6 from Mexico plus 2, more that I know of and haven't posted here
2 from Argentina
5 form Puerto Rico
2 form Spain
3 form Chile
1 from Uruguay

That makes 21 persons interested in a latin american board, who are currently living there. (sorry, I didn't include people who were living in the US)

Does anyone know how many more people we need?

is it hard to have a latinamerican board? how many do we have to be? not only the city guides, but a board where we could ask for tips, sometimes in Spanish, for those times qwhere we can't understand the instructions, or just to ask questions about crafts. In mexico we don't have a site like this, and I know we will be very happy to have a little space. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!

Title: Re: City Guides for crafters .... What about Latinamerica?

Well, this suggestion thread is about a Latin American regional board/city guide -- a board for discussing local crafty happenings and crafty resources such as stores, thrift stores, sales, etc.

If you want a specific section where you can post in Spanish about crafts and projects, that would be a whole new suggestion thread.  Though, we don't provide that for any other language currently.

But what if we write in both languages? Or ask for help in translating a term or something? There are a lot of crafts that you wont find in here that we do that interest a lot of people but can't really be shared because of the language barrier

That's fine! :)  You can do that on the main craft boards though, so all members can benefit from the discussions.

The City Guide boards are for discussing local craft-related topics.  Projects and general crafty chat should remain on the main boards.

i can, especially spanish-to-english, if it's not grading week or some other crazy time.

I think doing the best possible to post in English is the best bet.  Leah, myself and all of the moderators need access to posts at all times.

i meant, if a person wanted to post in English and couldn't, they could send the text to the translator people first.
say it was a tutorial or something long...

Yeah!  That would work.  I sometimes use http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ too.

uuuuughgghhhhgggghhhh.... sorry, as a language teacher i find out every day how horrible translation sites are for producing text.  for understanding, it's decent.... sometimes.  i even use it myself, on difficult languages.  BUT i would never use it to produce a text for publication, even somewhere casual like this.  just because computers aren't really good at translation ... YET.

sorry, i am taking this tangent way out.

Hi! I know I'm late to the party. Specially because I had been looking around (A LOT) before I finally registered. So first things first... I'm Cynthia and, even though right now I'm some sort of nomad, I'm from Argentina.

At some point I saw this post and have been thinking about the matter ever since. This is clearly a one-official-language community at the moment. This means that, in order to follow the present rules, all of us Spanish/German/Chinese/etc. speakers have to make an effort to adapt. The truth is moderators can't take responsibility for what isn't expressed in English and I believe they are an important factor in keeping such a healthy, friendly atmosphere on Craftster. This would explain why the regional boards' purpose isn't to be able to speak in whichever is the local language.

So... My proposal is the following: How about creating a Spanish-English dictionary? Simply creating a topic, where we can all add crafting terms we learn, ask about those things we can't figure out and maybe even include a list of useful links to websites in Spanish. I think this would be useful even for those who can't speak the language and happen to come across some pattern/tutorial in Spanish.

Regardless of this, I'd love to see a Latin American board, since there really is so much going on there in terms of both tourism and handcrafts. And in this board we could have our dictionary!

OK, I got carried away and this turned out to be really long. If anybody needs me to translate this into Spanish, I'd be more than happy to do it.

// OK, me entusiasmé y esto resultó ser muy largo. Si alguien necesita que lo traduzca al español, me encantaría hacerlo.

I bet that would be VERY helpful for lots of members!  Feel free to create such a topic anytime.  I'm thinking it would probably be best in Misc. Discussion & Questions.  Just be sure to have a descriptive title so everyone can easily tell what it's about.

Thanks for the input & ideas, shaints!

OK, sweets4ever... I've started it!
Here it is: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=265119.new#new
Unfortunately, I can't continue right now because I need to work for a while tonight.
Let me know what you think and I'll continue adding the things I know and can easily find out through the week. (Well, and actually through a longer period of time...)

I´d love to have a Latin American board! I currently live in Colombia, but back in Costa Rica I organized a Stitch´n´Bitch group and everything :P

I'm casting my vote. I do believe that it is a terrible gap to not have a Latin American Board... Even if there isn´t *much* interest at the moment, once people see that it is up, they would flock over there :)

The Latin America board already exists.  :)  However, we ask that people stick to English on Craftster, unless they write the same message in both languages (Spanish and English for instance).

I currently live in Colombia, but back in Costa Rica I organized a Stitch´n´Bitch group and everything :P

that leaves me wondering desperately what you called it.  the possibilities seem endless...
what first springs to mind is when my dh wants to tell me to "stop b****ing" about something, he says "deje de j***r".  and so my first thought was "coser y j***r" because it rhymes... but i think that sounds too violent and has too many double meanings as J***r is usually F***.
so...
"coser y quejar" ? (sew and complain)
"tejer y quejar" ? (knit/crochet/weave and complain)
"costuras y chismes" ? (couture and gossip)
"bordar y contar" ? (embroider and tell about stuff)

i suppose maybe you named it in english... which only occurred to me later.
but at least maybe this has given people a bilingual comic relief...
