Hi,

I think that if you've sent your stuff, it's been recieved and your partner is happy then you can ask your organisor to give you feedback - just explain to them why you would like it early. I can't see why there shouldn't be a problem. If I've got this wrong I hope someone will correct me!

Cheers,
Helen

Wow, we're doing really well with sign-ups! Thanks everyone!

I just wanted to give people a heads up that I will be away this weekend (Friday 1st till Sunday 3rd - at a games convention, I'll make sure I get lots of geeky ideas  :P). I will only have limited internet access so if you message me or want to sign-up and nothing happens this is why. I am not ignoring anyone  :D

Cheers,
Helen

OKay I guess I can't float the idea of "Top ten reasons I'm a geek/nerd etc" without first stepping up to share my list.

01100111 01100101 01100101 01101011 00100000 01110000 01101111 01110111 01100101 01110010

Ten Reasons I'm a Geek, Dork or Nerd:
1. I'm dating a Geek (He's a Linux/ Unix admin at a MIT affliate
2. I hang out with afore mentioned Boyfriend's geeky friends
3. I think Tux is sexy
4. I want so many things from Thinkgeek.com its not even funny (USB coffee warmer anyone)
5. I've been to DEFCON (hacker conference)
6. I frequent computer swaps (great sources for art supplies)
7. My desk set includes "heat syncs" and other hardware utilized in interesting fashions.
8. I read fark.com, slashdot, boingboing, neatorama, and love Oreilly's Make Zine and Craftzine.  I'm a neardcord blog-affectionado to the max ORL Y?
9. LOL cats are so last week, now I love LOL Geeks and LOL presidents, but the LOL Rocky Horror picture show is fantastic.  I haz cheezeburger!!!!!!!
10.  I was worked as a librarian during high school

oops, darling, at least you got paid. during high school i volunteered at the library. also, cat macro! i haz bucket!

i had a few reasons in my sign up sheet, but i've thought of more that i find both funny and sad.
-i sent my best nerd friend 30 emails in an hour once to get his password to somethingawful.forums.
-i've had to buy a second risk board because when you play at 6am it's too difficult to count how many soldiers you need when you cash in a tank and two horses minus the three men that just died. now i play only with soldiers.
-i've used the phrase "the rulebook's for p*ssies" when trying to argue my point in monopoly. (we also all own second boards for extra money)
-i write my own music lyrics and convince friends to sing it to music. "unicorns are more hardcore then you think" is my favourite.
-i organise my 600 books by extremely strange genre catagories (instead of sci fi i have mitochondrial dna, and callahan style)
-compounding on the last point, if someone wants to borrow a book, i can tell them what bookcase/bookshelf/pile on floor/packing crate in closet it's in, and approximately what side it's on. and if someone goes into my room and rearranges just one book, only one, i can tell. not because they're alphabetically but because they go in a natural progression of major themes.

i'm mostly a literature nerd, with a side of board games. and cards, when i was on vacation and my cousin didn't know the rules of gin rummy, my eyes welled with tears. some people carry their wallets everywhere, i carry cards.

my top ten

10. My friends and I would actually get together to watch an episode of Heroes or Star Trek: NG and show distress if we realized we missed an episode.
9. I feel like crying everytime I realize I can't find my Zelda Orcarina of Time game with my saved file on it.
8. I went to comicon! It was awesome, my feet hurt so bad!
7. I have a logitech headset for when me and my friends would play MMO's.
6. I'm a Harry Potter fan hardcore, and I hate the new Dumbledore! ><
5. My xboyfriend is now a member of the official Geek Squad and I am envious! (but don't make anything for him! hehehe!)
4. I would never buy a computer package. I put together my own computers. Frankencomputer!
3. My friends and I took up D&D and I was obsessed with my own character and making her own look and figurine! We stopped playing though.
2. I brought my magic cards into my class once to show a classmate and they had the special individual card protectors on them.
1. I snort when I laugh.

midnight- if you do want a copy pm me. i think something can be arranged ;)

burning star- though i'm not so much the computer geek, i do have friends. my best friend, when he gets drunk he spends hours writing code. and rants about it as if he thinks he understand what the heck he's saying.

sin esperanza- yeah, my friends tend to not borrow from me. it's pretty much a 'if you get it stained, ruin the binding or dogear the pages, you buy me a new copy and that's now yours.' situation. i've enforced it too. they know better then to borrow now. :)

the best thing about this swap, is even if i don't get a partner that shares my interests, my best friends are all major geeks and i can regift for christmas. example a; friend with code issues. example b; friend getting tattoo of Magic card, vesper ghoul. example c; friend that can quote the entirety of the holy grail. of course, i can too, and would be hard pressed to give her anything monty because i'd want it for myself. ;D

It is pretty addictive midnight!

gala apples- i'm with you... i love being around people who're actually passionate about something even if i have no idea what they're talking about.

Of course I'm a bit of a craft geek (really?! :o) so even if i have no geekdom overlap i'll enjoy the challenge of making something they'll appreciate!

I'm totally excited! This is my first swap--I've always wanted to join one, but have been in school for the last couple years and was just too busy. Graduation has made more room for crafts, if not  a job.  :(

Nerdy top ten:

1. As a kid, I would read my family's set of medical encyclopedias for fun.

2. My computer wallpaper rotates through my images, several of which are my dwarf hunter from WoW.

3. I love hardware stores--I especially like weirding out the tellers when I tell them what random craftiness I have in mind for my purchases.

4. I was a biology major in college. For my senior thesis, I didn't study mountain lions or redwoods or anything flashy like that. I studied dirt. Really.

5. Growing up, I was the master of Carmen San Diego and Oregon Trail. (And I totally want the "you have died of dysentery" shirt).

6. I have barrettes that say "dork" (though I wish they said "nerd").

7. I know the semantic differences among the terms nerd, dork, and geek.

8. I geek out when new issues of Knitty or Rebecca come out.

9. I like math. I even considered majoring in math.

10. I love Battlestar Galactica--my boyfriend even regularly says "frack."

"A definition common among self-identified geeks is: "one who is primarily motivated by passion," indicating somebody whose reasoning and decision making is always first and foremost based on his personal passions rather than things like financial reward or social acceptance. Geeks do not see the typical "geeky" interests as interesting, but as objects of passionate devotion. The idea that the pursuit of personal passions should be the fundamental driving force to all decisions could be considered the most basic shared tenet among geeks of all varieties. Geeks consider such pursuits to be their own defining characteristic."

I decided to jump on the band wagon!:

1. Im obessed with pirate RPG games and can name every port along the Spanish main when Pirates were at their height.
2. I spent months scouring the shelves of every computer game shop i went to to find a copy of 'Simon the Sorcerer' that would work on PC. I now have all 3 and have dedicated my life to trying to make them work on XP.
3 I prefered the acorn computers. And the BBCs, did anyone else have those?
4. Around 90% of the book on my shelf are fantasy orientated.
5. The other 10% are play scripts.
6. Im still upset that Pokemon is no longer 'cool'
7. I have calculator earrings!
8. For those who undestand -'Talisman', I refuse to go to uni until i have my own board.
9. I am REALLY jealous of detritus now and want my own 'dork' barettes
10. Shakespeare rules

Ill be so upset now if no one else ever knew Talisman or Simon the Sorcerer. Or Monkey Island.

You don't need 10 reasons to sign-up - its just for fun on the boards! If you do want to sign-up, I'd recomend doing it sooner rather than later as there's only two spaces left!

detritus- i actually saw that shirt earlier today and was like "oh man, i really want to make that. i REALLY want to make that. i wonder if i know anyone that would actually wear it?" alas, my friends are nerdy in other ways, not the way of oregon trail.

speaking of, anyone remember cross country canada? between oregon trail and ccc, everyone i knew had their entire elementary school computer lab days wrapped up.

midnight- shakespeare totally owns. i was the only one in any of my high school classes that was happy during those days. we had to read the plays out loud in english, i was the only one able to read without stumbling. honestly, how hard is the rule ed=ed? it's not warned, it's warn-ed. duhhhh.
yeah, i think i was the only person that ever wanted to have the 'R&J is so overrated' conversation. i got a lot of looks when i said that in grade 9. 5 years later, i still hold true, and still no one i know cares.

Yay, I'm officially in!  So here's my list...

1) I read Sylvia Plath and Shakespeare for fun.  I used to hang out with my friends who were actually majoring in English and discuss stuff with them.

2)  I'm totally relating to the R&J is so overrated conversation.  And ridiculously pleased to hear someone else wants to have it!

3)  If I hadn't majored in psychology I'd be studying ferns.  And my room space is equally divided between craft paraphernalia, books and ferns.  I know the botanical names of each fern in my room and have pictures of others on my walls!

4)  I spent two years shadow stalking flamenco classes before I joined up.

5)  I actually know when to use a : and when to use a : when writing.  Incorrectly used apostrophes make me cry.

6)  I steal old computer parts from my friend's lab to make stuff out of

7)  I refuse to go to a country if I don't speak the language.  I'm going to Spain later this year, woohoo!

8)  I hate arithmetic but love algebra.  I used to make up my own cyclic expressions to work out!

9)  I have an advance on the Dewey system for organising my books.  And a ledger to keep track of any that are borrowed!

10)  I spend several hours a day practicing the technique and footwork of flamenco.  And of course, I'm incapable of giving up until I get it right!

Yep, geek and weirdo, that's me.

Midnight, I picked up the dork barrettes years ago but I'm pretty sure I found them at Claire's or Hot Topic, so you might want to check if they have some anymore. Of course this was during the "geek chic" trend, and now everyone seems to have moved on to hipster-dom, so they might not carry them anymore. Of course, handmade would be better anyway! Also, where did you dig up the geek definition?

Gala_apples, I just started stenciling T shirts, so I was considering making my own "dysentery" shirt...but all those letters in an old-timey font sound like a major pain in the butt. I'm in the US, so I never heard of cross country canada, but now I totally want to check it out!

Oh, I'm so glad I got my feedback on my last swap on time!

Now for my top 10.

1. I just got done making a d20 necklace with matching d12 earrings.
2. I'm a grammar Nazi, and even go so far as to edit my manager's memos.  The typos bother me more than the what the memo has to say.
3. I'm currently involved in 3 tabletop RPGS, a White Wolf, a d20 Future, and generic DnD.
4. I love the Science Channel.
5. I still own my NES.  In fact, I've owned 2 in my life.  I cried when my mom sold my first one.
6. I got excited when, while dumpster diving, I found a huge stack of BetaCam tapes.  I don't even own a player.  They're just cool to have.
7. I can live without cable, but I couldn't survive a single day without the internet.
8.  I know the internet is not a big truck, but instead, is a series of tubes.
9. I wear glasses and am so white, you'd think I was Scandinavian.
10.  Nothing is more erotic than a large gathering of boys, linking their computers together, and playing games.  The smell of pizza and Bawls is an aphrodisiac.  I love LANs.

Yup.  I'm a big geek.

I love the smell of pizza and Bawls in the morning. Smells like ...... well ...... pizza and Bawls. lol  I couldn't pass that up.

Yay! Craftsters of Yorkshire unite! LOL

My ten-

1. I'm slavishly devoted to my elderly G3 iMac. I do work with PCs when I have to and generally get nominated as unofficial IT support in any office.
2. I'm currently doing training courses for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign... at the same time.
3. Of my friends three work in the computer industry and my boifriend built his own computer.
4. At university I'd regularly spend 72 hours in the computer lab and I'm still highly caffeinated. I <3 thinkgeek.com and its wide range of caffeine goodies.
5. I love obscure quotes, and have huge chunks of a massive range of movies and TV shows stuck in my head. Nothing pleases me more than asking "how often does the train go by?" and getting the answer "so often you won't even notice it", or "are you classified as human?" and getting "negative I am a meat popsicle".
6. I've tried to learn German for years and nothing worked, til I got my hands on Terry Pratchett in German, now its easy, though the vocab is rather specific :p
7. I don't go anywhere without at least one book, I read constantly and voraciously, generally sci-fi/fantasy but also classics.
8. I dunno if this counts but I am a geek for a particular band, I've travelled thousands of miles (22 gigs, in 5 years, in 4 countries on two continents), own every bit of merchandise and have taken tens of thousands of photos over the years.
9. When I get tired (or bored) I slip into cat macro speak and find it very difficult to get back out of it.
10. Spending far too many hours playing with my own websites or working on digital art when I really should be sleeping.

9. I wear glasses and am so white, you'd think I was Scandinavian.
Yup.  I'm a big geek.

I am Scandinavian  ::)

Top ten
1. I have just spent the evening readjusting my home made leather armour to fit me as I've shrunk.
2. I too play in several rpg games a week (Cthulu, Werewolf: Changing breeds, warhammer); I also run one (Buffy).
3. I have rpg books for at least 10 differnet systems; some I haven't even played or DMed yet, though I have plots for them.
4. One of my RPG systems is in Swedish(mutant) and I spend my time translating it so I can run it for my friends.
5. I built a database to keep track of which books I owned that I had read. I also use it to remind me if I'm missing books from series.
6. I can get away with saying things like "I can't remove my cloak without first removing my head". I don't even get funny looks.
7. I collect then catalogue my teas/coffee on my LJ so that my friends can choose their beverage of choice in advance.
8. I had at one point enough parts to make 3 computers. Only one of these worked and then only with the sides off.
9. I get annoyed when Vikings are shown with horns on their helmets when that was a feature more commonly used by Celts.
10. I have a collapsable Tai Chi sword that I nickname my lowtech lightsaber.

 ;D

I don't have time to make a top ten right now as am at work (lunch break) for a conference on Medieval studies, which I was, slightly, late for because I was buying satin to finish off my LARP outfit (thank you flexi time).  ::) although that may count as at least 2 of them...

but if I did nr 6) would be "I bought the low-tech lightsaber for Shazrasha when I was in China, along with 6 others I handed out to all my friends and insisted on keeping two for myself so I could to a Wolverine style *shnikt* with one in each hand.  ;)

Will post a proper list later  ;D

My top 10!

10. I purchased a Game Cube to play Zelda, and owned no other games for years, all of the zelda games exist for Game Cube :)
9. I have Star Wars on both DVD and VHS and know them by heart, and can debate the special editions and know the names of minor characters.
8. I know how to Chain Mail, and I taught myself and my ex boyfriend
7. My first boyfriend I met over D&D.  My current boyfriend I met due to AmtGuard
6. I have an SCA persona, and half an armor kit (expensive work in progress)
5. When my far away friends and I get together, we play DDR, Donky Konga, and watch Anime, we are happy in our dorkdom.
4. I knit my own dice bag, with room to grow
3. Scientific names are part of my everyday vocabulary.
2. I organized my fabric stash by use (garb, dress, curtains etc) then by color
1. I colored my own Marvel Comics Superheros on rolling window shades because I couldnt find posters I liked enough to hang in my apartment.

All right, this list is in random order, because I'm to lazy to figure out how the items rate on the geekiness scale  ::)

1. I've got around 10 different characters for roleplaying games, 4 of which get out to play in several gaming groups regularly.
2. I've yet to reach level 70 with one of my WoW characters, but I think I've actually tried out all of the different races and classes (except for the undead - I think they look icky..)
3. I buy EVERYTHING by Neil Gaiman (well, not all of the different US/British editions, unless there's a short story in one that's not included in the other...) - when there's an audiobook, too, I'll buy that along with the regular book, although it's mostly my husband who's got the patience to listen to audiobooks, I prefer to read at my own pace..
4. The first time we went to a reading by Neil Gaiman I had to arrange a weekend trip to England (from Germany) by car (taking the overnight ferry), drove all the way to the East of the country to pick up my husband, who was working there for a few days, then we drove all the way back to Canterbury, only to go to the event in the bookstore. Boy, it was SO worth it.
5. We made sure we were the last to get our stuff signed, so we wouldn't feel so rushed... we just happily sat through an hour of his signing stuff for fans, he's a really nice guy, could have stayed for ages, listening and watching :D
7. We've been to several more readings since then: in Holland, in Germany, in London ... we even took our then 4.5-month-old daughter on the one night trip to London.. last time we went to a signing in Hamburg in March we got to show him pictures of Iljana and her little sister whom he doesn't know yet..
8. Last time we went to London for the weekend (no Neil Gaiman fandom involved) we had to buy an extra suitcase, because we couldn't stow all the books we had bought..
9. We've been going to the games fair in Essen, Germany, for ... 12 years now. Never mind the little kids, they have to come along. We stay at friends', go to the fair together, watch videos at night, talk about roleplaying games and fantasy shows .. sometimes we sleep on the floor, because they've only got a 3-room flat plus one office room, and the last time there were 12 adults and 3 little kids staying over
10. I hate hot weather. I'd much rather spend my holidays in Britain than go somewhere  hot and sunny .. getting a tan is way overrated if you ask me..
 ;D

1. I colored my own Marvel Comics Superheros on rolling window shades because I couldnt find posters I liked enough to hang in my apartment.

That sounds so familiar, I think I had a project posted of that (looks behind me) yep, there it is. https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=137062.msg1347874#msg1347874 (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=137062.msg1347874#msg1347874)

and I am home! Long day at work it felt like.

My top ten:

1) the only reason I didn't quit French (I did joint honours) at Uni was because they offered a Medieval Literature Module.
2) While on the module that followed on from it the year after, we went to the Royal armouries museum for a look at arms and armour, and some of the students in the earlier module mistook me for an employee of the museum.
3) I said yes to a job at the International Medieval Congress even though it was temporary and mindnumbingly repetetive (and I love every minute of it)
4) While doing my A-Levels (aged 16-18) I got fed up of essays so chose to do Electronics as an EXTRA subject in order "to get a break"
5) For the practical exam I memorised the resistor colours even though I didn't have to. Saved lots of runing round benches to get to the chart though  ;D unlike for the other guy taking it.
6) When in China I bought collapsible Tai Chi practice swords because they reminded me of lightsabers, and gave them to all my friends incl. Shazrasha  ;)
7) I insisted on keeping two of them for myself so when I extended them one in each hand it would be like Wolverine going *snikt*  ::)
8) When I made the costumes for my first big LRP and my mum asked why my travel bear (who was given a chinese suit when he was in China) didn't have an outfit too not only did I make him one, but although he could pass as a "gnoll" I made him a bird mask so he could be Avian like our group.
9) I can't help translating (or attempting to) any Latin that comes up in Terry Pratchett or Harry Potter or anything else I read/see.
10) When I found out they didn't make plush mumaks I immediately set about making myself one...

So many more reasons, so little time. :D

Yay my first swap!   Now for my list :)

In no particular order...

1.  I have bought so many things from thinkgeek.com that I had enough points to get a free green laser pointer!
2.  I have and wear shirts with witty sayings such as "geek.", "Your skill in reading has increased by one point.", "Talk nerdy to me", "No, I will not fix your computer.", "How many people can read hex if only you and dead people can read hex?", etc :)
3.  I graduated college with honors and got a Computer Science BS degree.  I currently work as a Systems Administrator but would love to get a programming job.  I learned Perl for fun.  I went to a national competition for programming in C++ my junior year of high school.
4.  I have built several of my own computers and a couple for other people.  I am my family's tech support.  My friends who work for the Geek Squad ask me questions.
5.  I run Windows, OS X, and Linux at home.  Vi is my favorite text editor.
6.  I made a database for my books because I started forgetting what I already had.  If I won the lottery, I'd buy books...
7.  Diablo II consumed my life for about a year... My computer had to break for me to quit playing.  I am in love with the graphics in WoW.
8.  I still have my original gray gameboy (with original packaging and receipt) and it works.  I have my original nes and snes which also work and are hooked up to my tv.
9.  I think tetris is the greatest game ever invented.  I will play it for hours and when I'm done my eyes hurt because I forgot to blink.
10.  This list already has way more than 10 things on it and I've been trying to restrain myself...

Hi, my name is Jenn and I'm a computer geek ;D

OK. That does it. I do have to figure out how much they charge for sending stuff to Germany... what a great shirt to have!

(Oh, and the "Your skill in reading has just increased by one point" one is a must have, too - maybe I'll have one made...)

Can't wait for the partners to be assigned.. this should be so much fun!

My top ten:

1) I don't read much other than Douglas Adams, Jasper Fforde, Neil Gaiman, and Terry Pratchett.
2) My latest Television obsessions include everything Joss Whedon (and BSG, which my boyfriend got me hooked on).
3)I chainmaille, and have taught my boyfriend to do so as well (we're both uber-geeks)
4) As a kid, i watched Wishbone and Carmen Sandiego, geek TV for kids!
5) Oregon Trail. 'Nuff said.
6) I correct my friends' grammar on a regular basis (as well as really bad online spelling). It's not even a conscious thing anymore.
7) I can't look at thinkgeek.com without wanting something very much
8) I love my geek T-shirts, but one can never have enough of them. I'm rather partial to my LMAO shirt from Thinkgeek, as its currently the geekiest I have.
9) I love maille so much I've considered making my own rings (but had problems finding the right gauge wire...)
10) Sudoku. Love it. I have several books, as well as a magnetic book to take with me everywhere.

I used to have a 'talk nerdy to me' button on my backpack. Sadly, it rusted in the Seattle rain. i also can't believe I didn't mention reading or Tetris in my top ten. As an aside, if you haven't seen the "white and nerdy" video from Weird Al...you need to. I can  relate to most of this stuff.

Title: My Top 10
Post by: Kirashii on June 06, 2007 03:07:57 PM
I'm so excited. This is my first swap. Teh boyfriend wanted to join too, but he didn't meet the "Register for a month" requirement. Maybe next round! (If there is one)

Here's my top 10 list, cuz' I'm bored at work. These are in no particular order.

0. Any computer nerd knows that counting starts at 0, LoL. I'll start off with the fact I totally adore gore/zombies. My proudest moment was out-fan-knowledging my boyfriend. In Shaun of the Dead, near the start, Shaun or Ed call Liz's parents house, and yell into the phone "We're coming to get you Barbara!!" which is also a famous quote from Night of the Living Dead! I was so proud when I noticed, because the boyfriend had never picked up on it before XD

1. I attend and cosplay at Kumoricon, Oregon's premiere Anime Convention. I have made/worn 9 costumes. I also use to LARP when I was younger.

2. I collect computer parts and am a computer science major. Between the boyfriend and I we have enough parts to build 3 complete computers (We have plenty of misc things like RAM and keyboards leftover, haha.) . Both our computers were handbuilt by me, out of "spare parts". Water/Oil cooled computers make me insanely happy. 'Nuff said.

3. My father used to own a "gaming" shop. They sold all kinds of tabletop and LARP books, miniatures (Like Warhammer 40K and Warhammer Fantasy), and card games (I learned a little about EVERYTHING since I had to demo games to customers :P My faves are Magic, Pokemon, and WoW TCG)

4. I <3 WoW. I'm the proud owner of a level 70 night elf druid (Restoration spec) on Altar of Storms. Lurky/Murky the Murloc pets make me squirm from the cuteness!! We even scored a Special Edition of Burning Crusade for me. So I got the artbook, the soundtrack, and a special in-game pet, the Netherwhelp. He's adorable <3

5. I wear nerdshirts. I have "/dance" and "Alliance" WoW shirts, a Super Mario Bros 3 shirt with flying Raccoon mario, a 1up shirt, another Mario shirt, and many others XD Those are just my faves.

6. I'm obsessed with Japanese culture. Got the boyfriend hooked on Pocky and Mochi, and now one of my fave things is to go shopping at our local Asian market for japanese treats :) Someday I hope to live in Japan.

7. My family is a pack of nerds in their own way. My mom is a craft geek like me, (runs in the family I suppose) she can craft just about anything. My dad and 2 older bros play WoW. My dad even paid for my guild to have a Ventrilo server! (I'm co-guildmaster with my boyfriend, haha. Over 50 accounts and last time I checked over 80 members)  Also, My dad is the User Services manager in the IT department at my college.

8. I've been a gamer since birth. I can remember playing Toejam and Earl like a crackfiend when I was probably 5 or 6. I love Blizz games like Diablo 1 and Starcraft. My mom used to homeschool my bros and I, so we'd stay home and play Starcraft over the home network once we finished our daily schoolings, lol.

9. I go to college in a very liberal town called Ashland. We have a co-op with organic/vegan/local/imported foods, and have events like Multicultural Week, and Vagina Monologues. I <3 it!

10. I'm a tattoo nerd! My boyfriend has a full sleeve, and a Zombie-typed tatoo on the other shoulder. I have a half of a heart on each of my hipbones, and a beautiful sparrow between the two. My next project is a set of skulls/stars on my chest/boobs. I also have a backpiece and halfsleeves planned out :D

Ahh. This should be a LOT of fun. I'll have to remember to look at my partner's top 10 list if they didn't include it in the swap info :P

3) I have a large number of dice, including unusual ones like a d16
4) I own a box-set of ALL the Buffy series. I'm currently wading through it for about the third time

6) I knit while roleplaying
7) There are books EVERYWHERE in our house. There is not a room without at least two or three
8 ) I spent last weekend at the UK Games Expo and delighted in pointing out the women dressed as Slave Princess Leia to my husband
9) I wear a d20 necklace and a d6 earring 99% of the time
10) I'm Queen Geek of the Geek Swap  :D

Yay partners are up!! woot!!

Do you get extra geek points for playing the Buffy collectible card game in character? LOL cos thats like Whedon+vampires+scifi+RPG+cards....

I love the idea of dice jewellery, but I suspect my boifriend wouldn't be impressed if I damaged his dice :p

Photojenn - I have sent you your info. I'm afraid that in the midst of sending the other 22 pms I seemed to have missed you off. I'm so so sorry.

phantomssiren - you can certainly buy d6 beads if nothing else, so you could avoid damage to your boyf's dice. Or you could buy your own  ;)

You can also wrap dice with wire, instead of drilling a hole through the top.  That way, you can switch them out to match your outfit.

I can't do more than one or two sides of the cube either... I had one of them in the eighties, and I used to take it apart and put it back together to make the colours match...

I'm in awe of everybody who can get it right without cheating!

(Very geeky if you ask me  ;D)

this weekend i've been very motivated to get crafting (probably something to do with craftster being down for several hours yesterday leaving me with lots of time on my hands). i pretty much love everything i've been making...so hopefully you will too photojenn  ;D  at this rate, i may be able to mail out super early.

(speaking of the craftster outage, jenn, did you get my pm from yesterday? craftster went down mid-me-typing-it-out)

Am I about the only one who hasn't posted a top ten... there have to be a few more.... here goes anyway.

1. I am not a gamer, never have been a gamer, and have never owned any type of console or handheld, and neither has anyone else in my household. That said, I read Ctrl-Alt-Del and other gaming things online almost religiously.

2. I work at The Source by Circuit City. This is the Canadian Circuit City/Radioshack.  I got the job from one of my geeky best friends.  He fixes the computers there.

3. Joss Whedon. The comics, the shows, the movies, everything and anything.  I'm currently making back-up copies of all my Joss movies/box set shows to take to University so I don't have to worry about theft or breakage. I've got Angel Season 1 done so far.

4. Webcomics/Knitting Blogs. I'm obsessed with both and am always sure to read them from the beginning to the end. Reading the Yarn Harlot and Dinosaur Comics took a while (long blogs), but it was worth it.  I maybe have too much time on my hands?

5. My books are organized by theme, author, series, then favourites.  I have three full bookshelves in my medium sized bedroom.

6. I'm going to University for a bachelor of Arts and Science because I didn't want to give up English OR Chemistry.

7. Grammar Nazi. I even correct my tests/exams. I write my text messages without short forms and with proper capitalization.

8. I am a member of a Llama 4-H club, and this is my 7th year. This means I a) love llamas and b) can recite inane facts about them. For example, llamas are partial ruminants with three stomachs rather than four. The wild relatives of the llama are vicuna and guanaco. Llama fighting teeth come in in their third year. I will just stop myself there.

9. I teach free knitting lessons at a library in town.

10. I have almost perfected my knitting-and-walking/reading-and-walking skills. I can dodge people in the hallways at school without having to reread a line. Knitting is much harder...

That was harder than I thought it would be. I'm maybe a little wordy though?

Nope, you're not the only one to not post a top 10.... here's mine (though it's probably not that cool)

1.  Camped out for opening night of Star Wars, Episode 1, with a lifesized R2D2.  (And I was pissed at the movie)

2.  My friends and family get a reminder about my ThinkGeek.com wishlist about once every two months... just in case.

3.  My husband is the regional IT manager/support guy for a huge company with 5 different programs in our area... and he calls me for tech support.

4.  I used to be a backpacking substance abuse counselor, which I loved, but severally injured my back which caused me to have to quit, and was secretly a little happy that I could persue my geek-side.  <<Side note: We used llamas in the wilderness... I LOVE them!>>

5.  Most of my books are fantasy, with a little sci-fi thrown in.  I won't let my husband add his books to my bookshelves, and I keep a separate shelve for my computer/craft books.

6.  I love computer parts.

7.  I started as a computer geek with a Commodore 64 and a cassette tape drive.

8.  I'm a bit of a fish geek as well... I love my fish tanks.  (I'm down to three of them, as I'm just too darn busy right now!)

9.  I own 4 different gaming consoles (that's including handhelds, but not my PC), with a projector and a 8 foot by 6 foot wall screen.  (I love it when Link is 3 feet tall!)

10. I'm writing my top 10 when I was supposed to leave about 20 min. ago to get my errands done!

Nope, I haven't posted a top 10.

Just off the top of my head:

I went to MIT.  If that doesn't make me a geek, nothing will.   :P  My degrees are in computer science, and I work as a software engineer.

I'm a fan of almost all sci-fi.  Name a show - I've probably watched and enjoyed it.  I have more sci-fi books than I have bookcases, and a whole slew of DVDs and VHS tapes.

Words like "frak", "frell", "dren", "gorram", etc. come out of my mouth several times a day.  Their "real" sweary counterparts - not so much.

I met my husband partly because of Babylon 5.

Yay for other people being geeks!  My brother always told me that I had no problems fitting in anywhere because I just went and found the freaks.... I took that as a compliment.

Paisley Panther - Glad to hear I'm not the only one who writes text messages in normal english!  And I too have perfected the art of reading and walking... also walking and darning... can't knit though.  Yet.

Ha! I know just what that's like. Frak and Gorram have become part of my normal vocabulary, and even my non-geek friends have gotten used to them.

I'm sure quite a few of us have been effected by this, but I'm having problems getting supplies due to the main local shopping areas being badly flooded (http://www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/content/image_galleries/flooding_june_2007_gallery.shtml). *sniffle*

Well I know that there were a lot of people in this swap up in Yorkshire (my sister for one) and you guys have been hit pretty hard.

Personally I've just not started yet with my stuff (and my local crafting store is rubbish anyway) but I have the whole week off next week so should get things going.

Apparently there are further severe weather warnings for this weekend. So be prepared.

POSTAL STRIKE IN BRITAIN

Just to warn everyone that the post office is definately striking (see link below). This will affect all mail throughout Britain.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6251932.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6251932.stm)

Just thought I'd make sure everyone was aware of it as some people are getting their stuff out early and I'm not sure how long the strike will last. It says 24 hours but might be extended.

So strikes and flooding, aren't we just having fun?  :-\

good luck to everyone over in the UK...and be safe with all the flooding.

Ok since the postal service is striking, do I go ahead and send when I am finished (one, ok one and a half projects to go) Or do I wait till closer to the deadline hopeing the strike is over and your postal employees are happy by then?

well they're not on strike now, it was only a 23 hours 59 minute long strike, but I hear there are more planned. Personally I advise sending things whenever, they shouldn't be delayed too much by the backlog.

Well, they have to stop striking sooner or later... but I HATE it when I send something and it takes forever to get there!  I sent a package to a swap partner once, and it took TWO WEEKS.  It wasn't even outside the country!  There were cookies in the package that she probably didn't get to eat, I felt so bad.

But best of luck to everyone!!

Also, I got plenty of pics so let me know if you need me to post them for you. Damn, I'm just so excited. Chuffed even. lol

Haha look at my loot!!!

From awesome detritus I received.... a green felted bag (which has already been stolen by my friend's sister.... apparently it perfectly matches her ball dress!) so that's the only thing that isn't in the photos!!

group shot:

my felted sushi pin cushion, knitted uterus (talk about unasked wishes being answered!) and my very own Apostrophe Protection Society kit (I'm a grammar nazi and badly used apostrophes make me cry!)

arm warmers in my favourite colours, the world's most gorgeous shrug and the crowning glory....

an anatomically correct felted heart (i heart it so much)

Thank you so much Detritus... you nailed my geekishness perfectly... not to mention making me all the things I can't possibly make for myself.  I've really enjoyed this swap and being you partner and I hope fervently that you like what I've sent you!!

Oh my, I'm really late now, but I'm almost done, too ... I'll probably send out Monday at the latest, sorry phantoms for taking so long .. what I've seen so far looks really amazing - that'll teach me to procrastinate, it just makes my swap anxiety rocket into the skies... ahhhhhh  ;D

Detritus has received the stuff I sent her.  She asked me to put photos up since she's not going to be able to for a couple of days.  So here they are

a tie up hair tie (she told me her hair was at that annoying stage between short and long); a kimono style needle roll to keep her crochet stuff; a lucky vulva coin purse; uterus stitch markers; a lavender and wheat heat pack; a shoulder bag (jordy style) with a raven (she's obsessed with them!);

and a wrap around skirt with an anatomically correct embroidered heart.

I had loads of fun making all the stuff for her!!

Hi,

Can you post a copy of the photos in the gallery as well, if you have chance? I know there are non-swap participants envying our geeky goodies who would like to see what we have made!  ;D
