Title: Easy, Cool Stitch for Variegated Yarn
Post by: Quad Mom on April 28, 2007 04:46:43 PM
Variagated yarn can be "zzzzzz..." sometimes.  The linen stitch makes variagated yarn look woven and interesting.

CO any mutiple of 2 to desired width.
Starting rows:
Row 1 and your 2nd to last row: Knit across the row
Row 2 and your last row: Purl across the row
Linen stitch:
Row 3: Slip first stitch knitwise.  *Knit 1 stitch, bring yarn forward between the needles, slip 1 stitch purlwise, take yarn to back of work* repeat between * until the last stitch, knit last stitch through the back loop.
Row 4:  Slip first stitch purlwise.  **Purl 1 stitch, take yarn to back of work, slip 1 stitch purlwise, bring yarn to front of work** repeat between ** until last stitch, purl last stitch.

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until you have just enough yarn to repeat
Rows 1 and 2 if you are fringing.  (For scarves).

This pattern is supposed to be for scarves, but I made a dishcloth with Sugar and Cream cotton yarn (I have lots of variegated colors I have been heretofore uninspired to use).

This is beautiful! I'm not a fan of variegated yarn (on the skein, yes; knitted up, not so much...), so thank you for this!

That stitch is really lovely and it has certainly made me think about making something using variegated yarn, which I have never really liked before. It sounds like it might take some practice to get a nice even finish like you have here.

Linen stitch is one of my favorites!  I've a facecloth that's practically identical to your dishcloth :D

Me too -- I have a fair bit of variegated, but never like how it looks and end up taking it out.

I thank you, too!  This is a great stitch.  I'll definitely try it.  For anyone else who is interested, a great pattern for trying out stitches is the Orphans for Orphans sweater  (http://www.tropicalyarns.com/index.cfm?PID=22&ProdID=79) -- you basically use a large, long swatch for the front and back panels and then knit the sides off that.  I've made a couple with variegated panels and sleeves and solid sides.

Anyone else know any good stitches for varigated yarns?  You know, to prevent pooling and striping as much as possible, and instead show off the blend of colours?

janaana, it doesn't take any practice at all!  The pattern is what makes the ends look so finished: that's what's so cool!   :D

I have a pattern book that uses this stitch with just a plain yarn and I never thought it was anything special... but it looks great with the variegated!
Thanks for sharing the pattern, I'll try it out sometime!

Thanks for sharing the pattern. I've been looking for a way to show off the variegated yarn and this is perfect.

I have knit a couple of baby blankets using that stitch and varigated yarn, and they turned out beautifully!  I had forgotten that I had made them until I read your post.

Wow thanks!  :) I have a penchant for buying variegated yarn cos it looks sooo pretty in the skein but whenever it knits up it just looks like.. well. poo. (Does anyone else have this damn problem?! I always wear black, I love black, but do I ever buy black yarn? nooooo...)  :P

The chevron scarf from last minute knitted gifts is also an awesome pattern for any variegated yarn - and it's really easy too, just a bunch of increases and decreases. Check out the flickr group: http://flickr.com/groups/chevronscarf/

Slipping the first stitch of every row instead of knitting/purling it always makes the edges look tidier. I tend to do it whenever I knit something in stockinette or garter stitch.

Thanks for adding the picture of the sides & back. I had been wondering if both sides looked more or less the same.

Looks pretty, thanks!  I'll use that some time, for sure.

I completely agree!

Here's my linen stitch scarf:

It didn't look like much in the photo in my stitch dictionary, but oh, how it is delightful with variegated yarn!

Oo, that looks great nemka!

Thank you!  Although, I should mention one caveat: this scarf will take me the rest of my natural life to complete.  Not only is it very thin yarn, the linen stitch is very dense--the rows sort of settle into each other, if that makes sense.

Yaa...that's why I don't do scarves. ::)

I think that's beautiful!
Must have a go at that when i've mastered the basic stitches!

So nice to know that I'm not the only one with tons of varigated yarn- all because I love it in the skein, hate it knitted up.

I'm thinking placemats with this stitch. Oh, or maybe pillows. (I'm all about knitting for the house instead of people right now. Something about how the house never complains.)

Beandip, that is the cutest knitted bib I've even seen!  It looks so cool and fun!  Those colors really pop!  They look yummy!

Thanks Quad Mom! I am currently addicted to the Hot Green shade of Sugar-n-Cream. I'm using it in everything. Two finished baby blankets, the beginning of a third twin sized blanket and now this bib. I love how bright it is.

Because of the bib I am discovering this late.  I think I was out of town when this was initially posted so I missed it.  I am totally in love with this.  I am now making dishcloths with this pattern for all three of my aunts, my mother and myself (I have yet of all things to make a dishcloth for myself).  Who knows, maybe I'll make a scarf with this stitch at some point too.  Thank you for sharing.

I know what you mean. I've done the bib but I've also planned a set of placemats, a purse, a couple of dishcloths and maybe even something huge like a blanket- all in this stitch. I just can't get away from it. I love it! It makes variegated yarn look just fantastic.

Thanks Quad Mom for posting this!  Beautiful!  I printed the stitch pattern and I'm thinking about a couple of dishcloths and/or maybe placemats like beandip suggested.  Must put them down the to-do list a bit, though....  :)
