Title: Dobby Afghan (Harry Potter)
Post by: pesky pixie on April 10, 2007 08:34:15 AM
Hi everyone! I'm new here and I wanted to show you-all my latest afghan.

It is Dobby the House-Elf from Harry Potter.
It is done in tunisian crochet with a size J cabled afghan hook.
I used a graph I made with a small Dobby icon.

It reads "Dobby is used to death threats, sir. Dobby gets them 5 times a day at home." JKR

Aparently I can only post the link for now. Hope it works.

Here's the not-so-pretty back. There were lots and lots of ends to weave in!

I used Caron one pounder yarn in dark purple, Red Heart medium Purple, a cream colored yarn called Fashion Knit (it says off-white), and Spring Green in Red Heart for his eyes.

There's more blatherings about it in my blog, (link is below). I hope you-all like it. I can't wait 'til July for the next movie and, most importantly, the last book!!!!!

The afghan measures 40" X 30". You could use a larger cabled hook size like N, M, or P to make it bigger. I like it small because then you can mount it on a heavy-duty board (by having it stitched on)(they do that at Michael's) so you can hang it on the wall like a portrait.

I used Caron One Pounder in the dark purple and had some left-over. Still, it's better to have more than not enough.
I used three skeins of the Medium Purple in Red Heart 7 ouncers. (With left-over yarn).
The Fashion knit creamy off-white color comes in 3 ounce skeins and I used three. (Again, with left-overs).
His eyes didn't take much yarn at all. I used one skein of the Red Heart Spring Green with lots and lots of left-over yarn.

This took me about two weeks. (I am an obsessive/compulsive type and when I start a project; it nags me until I get it done.) (Or give up on it). Don't get me wrong. Of course I have mysterious U.F.O.s like everyone else, but I try to keep that to a minimum. (Or at least swept under the rug or hidden in my closet of mysterious oddities). But let's not go there, shall we? LOL!

I AM SO JEALOUS!  I HAVE BEEN WANTING TO LEARN HOW TO DO THE TUNISUN AFGHAN STITCH FOR MONTHS BUT I SEEM TO HAVE A MENTAL BLOCK  ???  I CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHY  IT SLANTS OFF TO THE RIGHT /_______/  AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO CHANGE COLORS.  I PRINTED DIRECTIONS THAT I FOUND ON DIFFERENT WEB SIGHTS.  GUESS I JUST HAVE TO KEEP WORKING AT IT.  YOUR'S IS AWSOME.

 :o HOLY CRAP!!!!!  :o

That is SERIOUSLY AMAZING!!!

I can't believe how much like him that looks.  Whew!

Question:  Did you leave your ends loose and then go at them with a yarn needle?  Yikes!

REALLY REALLY GREAT!

 ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: Dobby Afghan
Post by: pesky pixie on June 01, 2007 04:52:06 AM
Hi msfitts,

Yes, I always leave the loose ends and then go back after I'm all through with a yarn needle and weave in all the loose ends.

I think, in my gallery link at the bottom of this post, if you follow the John Lennon afghan link, I took a picture of the back before I wove in the ends so you could see how it looks before-hand.
It's not a pretty sight.  :P But I find it kind of relaxing to do.
After the hard part of the graph being done, it's just a relief to do something that you don't even have to think hard about. LOL! Weaving threads.

I'm glad you-all like the afghan.  :D

Yes, I always leave the loose ends and then go back after I'm all through with a yarn needle and weave in all the loose ends.

Whew!  I thought I was the only one who did that!  ;)  I've honestly tried to do it the "correct" way, but I hate seeing the alternate color poking through.  Intarsia schminarsia!  Ha ha.

That is such a lot of work, either way.  You are totally my hero.

 ;D

BTB, do you always work in Tunisian Crochet?  Does that make the imaging easier?  I've been trying to work images in single crochet on hats, etc. and am unsure as to how to make the images better.  Thanks!

Oh my gosh!  ;D I can't believe this is on the front page again after so long!
Thank you so much guys for saying such nice things!!

You know. Now that the series is through, if I were going to do this afghan again, (or at least make another one), I think I would have it say at the bottom:

"Here lies Dobby; a free elf."

because that really got to me in the book.

I mean, I was bawlin' like a baby.
It was one of the most emotional moments of the book for me.

She, (J.K.R.), wrote that part really well.

Now if only poor Snape were given even half of the sentiments poured out for Dobby. Then it would have been a fair ending for all.
Instead, I felt cheated for Snape. :-\

Oh well. It's all over now. It can't be rewritten. Sigh.

I am so there with you on the tears over Dobby in the final book, and I think Snape deserved a lot more, too.  Oh well.  If you plan on doing a Snape afghan, I may just die.

I graphed an avatar that someone was using on a Harry Potter forum.
I had to change some of the picture because it was very shaded on his body area.
I think he might have been holding a letter that covered his torso a bit.

For the word "Dobby" I used a Harry Potter cross stitch alphabet in a French DMC cross stitch pattern book.
