Title: What does zetti mean?
Post by: alacarte on February 24, 2007 11:26:49 AM
I've seen the term and I looked through the gallery.  I see that all of the zetti ATCs have characters on them.  Usually a photo of a face and a drawn body?  Is that it?  What does the term refer to?

I'm learning all kinds of new stuff. :D

Zetti is a style based on the art of Teesha Moore: http://www.teeshamoore.com/

It's a blend of collage, drawing and painting. She explains her style here: http://www.teeshamoore.com/latest_news.htm

Hope this helps you guys and you decide to join in the 2nd zetti swap:

Hey mods!  Maybe this should be a sticky thread!

It's not just a style -- wings, striped legs, funny hats, mismatched heads and body parts.  I think Zetti is also a feeling -- it's a whimsical concoction of elements.  It's kind of fearless, because the people who do it put together so many different things and make it work.

I love looking at it, but I personally can't pull it off.  It feels like work to me.

Selise, I think it's more of a blend of the ordinary and the fantastic to make a new genre'- the zetti. The word is made up- so are the figures. It's sort of like mythology. I have a favorite drawing I bought at an art fair 30 years ago and it says- "and with the left over parts (from making Adam & Eve) God created mythology!" That's sort of how I view zetti style- a blend of the human/worldly with the fantastic/otherworldly, hence the little girls with wings and silly hats. The cone hats and stripe legs are just a favorite element of Teesha Moore- a way to make ordinary legs look more "silly" or fantastic. So basically it is taking parts of a real figure (person or animal) and blending it with a fantasy figure or element.
Not that I'm an expert- but that's the best explanation I can come up with.

Well spoken Patti.

I'm still copying this one's style and then another. Trying to create my own.  I know it's in me....somewhere.

And that's good Tee- as long as ultimately we all find our own style! It is good to copy someone's style,( Teesha as a goddess for Zetti is a good ex.) but eventually as artists we all have to "be original" or we won't want to do it anymore. Like the saying goes- "Be yourself- an original is always worth more than a copy!" (I have that hanging over my desk to remind me!)

Thats a great explanation Patti!  The whole zetti style is the essence of fun art to me-lots of colour, but also black and white; reality and fantasy; interpretation of ideas in a nontraditional way.  I think doing zetti-style cards helps develop your "eye" as to how much detail to add (be it lots or a little), being brave with colours, or not having colour at all, most of all stretching your imagination.  Even when people emulate the style, I still see so much originality in what they do-it takes cut and paste and doodling to a whole new level!

Here's my take, for the recent (first) Zetti ATC swap here on Craftster:

More Inspiration about ZETTI:
Here's a few recent sets of posted Zetti cards:

By a bunch of AWESOME craftsters, for the first ATC Book Swap Ring (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=126616.msg1271895;topicseen#msg1271895)  (All in GoatGoddess' collection now!)
Teesha Moore's journal pages (http://teeshamoore.com/teeshasjournalpgs.html)

A little bit more info to help designate what is Zetti:
-Contrasting textures and patterns
-Bright colors
-Black and White patterns (especially striped pattern)
-Faces and Bodies that are mis-matched (including animals)
-Added body parts/clothes/wings
-Fantastic hats and crowns
-Quirky, Odd, Whimsical combinations of characters
-Lyrical, poetic, handwriting and text

Who's obsessed with people with stripey legs, big wings, and pointy hats?

Zetti is a term coined by Teesha Moore.  Click for her website. (http://www.teeshamoore.com)  Basically, it's odd people/figures with random parts and funny hats, mostly.  :)

That's my take on it all.
Check out this gallery of cards for more info and inspiration:

I bought the stamp catalog from Teesha Moore. In there front of it, there is kind of a history of Zetti. Its pretty funny. It involves aliens.
