I pm'ed! I am excited about this swap...I think signups will pick up. Even if they don't...I'm still excited. My current swap I'm in is sorta large so it will be nice to do a smaller one (plus I totally looked at the entire first round swap gallery multiple times...and I make silly little stuffies often)

Ok, I'm ramblin'...it's time for bed. Ooh maybe I'll get to sleep before 2am!

Thanks for organising novastarlet! I have a good feeling about this one ;D

I'm in!  Sent my pm.

I had a question though.  Can I use the material from my felted sweaters for the stuffie I make or does it need to be new from the fabric store?  Thanks!

I just sent in my info too  :)  Paperdaisies, you're in the crafty detective swap too, aren't you?  I gotta finish that one up before I can devote energy to this one!

Novastarlet, thanks for organizing again... I had so much fun with the first round!  ;D

That shouldn't be any problem, bluechip. If someone finds some fabric that they like from a thrift store and wants to use it, that's fine too. :)

---

We have a pretty long sign up time, so hopefully everyone who wants to participate will be able to. I'm hoping we can get a group of at least 20 because it makes for a more interesting gallery -- and the gallery is the best part!! :D

This sounds fun and easy.

You have send out date wrong in the title! May 19th would be a loooong time away.  :D

I went ahead and sent my info!  I also added to the questionare things that I can do to create the plushie, so like I could knit or sew together one and incorporate beadwork and/or embroidery. I think it might be helpful to the questionare because that way people could be matched up better. IE if someone wanted an amigurumi you could pair them with someone who specifies they are able to crochet. Or if someone really wanted a mascot they could be partnered with someone who just recieved a felt mascot book and is itchin to try out one of the patterns.

Great idea. I take all the info people give me in their questionaires to help match partners. So the more that you say, the more likely you will get a good match. I also look at wists, if people have them. I try to do everything I can to get two people with similar interests paired up. ;)

I have wists. I'm so glad I do too. I just need to keep remembering to add stuff to it.
Hi everyone! Nice to meet you all! I look forward to being partnered with one of you. :)

Hi Peihan17! Yep! I am surely in the crafty detective swap...but I've nearly finished crafting for that. I might send early for that swap...

I'm looking forward to crafting for this lovely..less involved swap. But I'm still excited about the crafty detective swap. I nearly signed up for another swap last night...but I restrained myself...my family think I'm strange enough doing this current swap (the whole making something for someone I'v never met before!)

Can't wait to get partnered up! (^_^)

Oh, and thanks for putting a link to the sign-ups in your signature! That's so cool!! :D

I think we are going to have really good turn out for this. It's barely been open 24 hours and sign-ups are blazing.

Goodness...I've just finished a swap and am sooo ready for this one to start.  It's hard to resist making something before I get my partner.  I got a PM from someone with the heading "stuffy stuff" and got super excited that it was my partner.  Alas, she was just talking about, you know, stuff.  Not stuffies.   :(

Of course I know signups are still open and I won't get my partner til they close.  My brain knows that, but my heart gets confused. ;)

Okay guys, I had to change one of the dates but it won't affect anyone who is already in the swap. I moved the sign-up close date to Saturday. I want to have all day Sunday to match up partners. This way I can make sure that everyone has the info they need to get started crafting on Monday.

Hope this isn't going to be a problem for anyone! :)

Yeah, we have a really big group -- and two more days of signups. I think this is going to make for an amazing gallery! I can't wait to get things started myself.

It is probably going to take me most of Sunday to get people matched up -- but I will get your partner info out to you ASAP. I don't like to start matching before everyone has signed up because I want to be sure you get your most perfect match. ;)

I'm sure everyone will be glad to hear that I have started "organizing." I'm going through questionaires and seeing what people have made, what they want, where they will send to, ect. I actually have found good partners for a couple people! :D

Sorry guys, you still have to wait until Monday!  ;D

Okay... maybe Sunday ;)

IamSusie is the co-organizer for this swap. She's going to be helping me manage this huge group. Thanks so much, Susie! Your a lifesaver.  :-*

Novastarlet is super-tech-savvy, while I think I'll be more of the index-cards spread-out-on-the-carpet type of organizer  ::).

I'm happy to help out!  To think back in early January, novastarlet and I weren't sure if there would be that much interest in another round.

This gallery will be awesome!

We are going to shoot for late Sunday or early Monday to get partners sent out.  Be sure to communicate with your partner about what they want before you start crafting!

Uh-oh, I have Sewing Tiny Toys checked out of my library!  I just renewed it for the swap.  I checked out another book by the same author today too, just in case the animal my partner likes isn't in the five or so stuffy-making books I have lying around already!  Can't be too prepared, you know.  That is the motto of the boy scouts, after all.   :D

As for stuffy books, I really just like to look at the pictures...  sometimes I think it's better if you don't have a book, because then it's just your creativity coming out (in stuffed form).

I think crafting books are like a security blanket for me....if I can look at a picture or trace part of a pattern then I feel less afraid that I'm wasting my time and the elephant I'm trying to make for my nephew will come out looking like a giant phallus.  Which HAS happened.  So you see where my fears come from.   :D

Anyway, I'm rambling.  You'll do great.

Partners have been officially paired up! Check out the first page of the thread for details.

Susie and I will be sending out questionnaires this afternoon. If you don't get details on your partner by tomorrow, please let us know. We have divided the groups in two - so be sure to contact your organizer for questions/problems/status reports.

BUT! You don't have to wait for the questionnaire to arrive to start communicating with your partner. ;)

Thanks for the heads up on that Avian Flight. We actually have it entered correctly on our spreadsheet - but I mistyped it on the individual list. ;)

I hope all partners are floating PMs back and forth. I can't emphasize enough that if you are craft more than the requirement you must discuss it with your partner. There are no restrictions on adding more but you have to tell them first. ;) Nothing adds to swap anxiety more than crafting what is required and then getting a package in return that is totally over the top.

Rowdy Vamp Raquel - Don't worry about it!! :D I'm sure what ever you make I will love. ;)

But....the crafting in secret is working well thus far...I have a pattern all printed and cut out...I went to Joann's and got some felt. Ima ready to craft....

Yup yup. I dye white velboa and long-pile all the time. It's a bit messy (because the loose fur will mat in the dye pot, etc.) but it's doable. Also, as far as I can tell, it works much much better with heat than just with sitting in the dye bath--you'll want to do it on the stove (although use a pot you're not going to eat out of again! This is a total newbie question but can you dye synthetic fabrics?

I really like how people have used kool-aid to dye their knitting wool - and I would love to use that technique to make some personalized colors for little stuffies/mascots. Can you do it with felt though?? Maybe I should post this q on that thread.  :-\

Title: Re: Felt Mascot or Little Stuffie Swap - Round 2 [Signups Closed; Sendouts 3/19]
Post by: Calliel on March 06, 2007 03:35:05 PM
I've never tried felt--I think it could be tough because it isn't woven. It might fall apart.

But other synthetics, you can, although you have to be careful because some will melt! And you'll get varied results--trial and error is all I can suggest here.

Laughingsquid, the normal directions are usually OK--since you're doing it on the stove you can watch and see. Generally I take it out when it's a shade darker than I want, because it will rinse out a bit. But you could always aim for the shade you want and re-dye it if it rinses out too light. :)

You can't dye synthetics with Kool-Aid or Wiltons icing colors.  If you have wool felt, it will dye with Kool-aid, but the quality and depth of color you get will depend on the percentage of wool content.  Cotton won't dye with Kool-aid either.

I don't know about Rit dyes, or the kind you use for tie-dye. You'd have to check their packages or websites to see if they work on our acrylic or polyester craft felts.

My JoAnns started carrying a 100% wool felt for $14/yard.  I bought a bit of it to test out dying.  I've dyed wool yarn in the past, but never wool felt.

We've been trying to drum up some interest in a dye board, because people don't know where to go when they have dyeing questions: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=70328.0 (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=70328.0)

Ooh yes--I didn't mean you can dye fake fur with Kool-aid, I don't think it will work (it adheres to proteins). But it definitely works with RIT dyes, or MX if you have them.

I had read through several pages of info on the dyeing with kool-aid thread and I thought I had read before that it wouldn't work with synthetics. I also didn't realize that the felt they sell in squares was made of a different composition than what they sell on the bolt. Interesting!!

I have never dyed anything before - so I'm not sure that I want to "go where no man has gone before" on the felt kool-aid dyeing. I would rather stick to something with a confirmed tutorial. I'm not that adventurous.  :P

On the Stuffie Swap front - I have one of my little guys completed and he's soooo cute!! :D I'm trying to figure out bonus items.

Title: Re: Felt Mascot or Little Stuffie Swap - Round 2 [Signups Closed; Sendouts 3/19]
Post by: IamSusie on March 07, 2007 06:48:41 AM
At my JoAnns, the better quality stuff is around 20-30% wool.  The rest of the content is rayon.  I tested it and it doesn't needle felt...  :'(

I have been searching and searching for cheaper wool/rayon felt sources, and haven't found any.  My JoAnns charges about $6.99/yard.  I don't think there are many manufacturers in the US.  National Nonwovens is the brand that makes the widely distributed stuff.

I do prefer this type because it seems so sturdy. I wish the color choices were better and it's not nearly as soft as the other kind.  In my piles of stuff I inherited from my Grandma, I got felt that seems to bee a very soft cotton and rayon.  It's so nice, thin but not see-through.  I don't think anyone makes that kind anymore.  Judging by the colorways I have, I think this stuff is from the 70's.

Expect to pay a lot for $100 wool!

Hey, don't think it goes unappreciated! I like learning all these things. :)

My main complaint about felt is the lack of color choices. You can really tell that the selections are geared toward children's projects. Nothing wrong with that but I would like to see some less extreme color options. Michaels has a pretty good selection but I'm always searching for cream or subtle yellow.

If your cheap and want to dye some felt you should just see if any craft stores in your area carry wool roving. Then you can lay it out and make a felted sheet to use. You can dye it before or after, incorporate little bits into it, or nuno felt through some airy fabric for extra strength. Its a bit overboard but it would be cool.

AMEN, SISTER.

I bought my felt last night and settled on some nice colours, but they're not exactly what I wanted. I think it will still look awesome (I hope! haha) but it's frustrating that everything is NEON GREEN or NAPALM ORANGE or ELECTRIC BLUE, you know?

The wool/rayon felt has a lovely light yellow and other natural tones.  That is if your store has it in stock.  I've been watching for several weeks for it at my store.

I might just go ahead and order some online.  Check out these nice color choices:  http://www.ericas.com/fabric/woolfeltyardage.htm (http://www.ericas.com/fabric/woolfeltyardage.htm)

I've figured my project out. Now I just need to get off craftster and start sewing! (Why oh why is craftster so addicting? It just sucks you in and keeps you here. lol. That's a good thing though.)

you know, i just remembered that i've dyed the felt that comes in squares with tea before. it worked really well you just have to let it air dry so it doesn't felt itself. i dyed it so i could make the belly for a totoro stuffie for a friend <3

Glad I'm not the only one who is like "ok - just going to check how to do this one little thing . . .  oooo look at that awesome bag . . . how did she make that?  and oooo wet felting hmmm let's see if I have enough to do that one little  . . . ooooo look at that .  . . It's like crafters ADHD!!!! gah!

Anywho - I decided to actually make some felt like I am knitting the yarn and it's in my washer right now felting and then I am going to cut it out and if all goes as planned (yeah right) I will be making my little creation soon as it dries.  If not - I'll be in the car in a mad search for the felt as some of you are :D  What is in my head is SOOOOO cool - it's just freeing the little devil that's the trick!  have an awesome evening all - Katie

When I felt my knitting it always ends up really thick...too thick for a tiny stuffie, but then again I use thick yarn, or yarn thats doubled.

Im almost done with my stuffie! I had some time to myself yesterday and just went to town. Either my partner will love it or think I'm a freakin nut. Either way :P

Where does this stuff come from?  my mom has been saying that for years - and several years ago I said it in front of my sister - thought she was going to pee herself - "MOM says that !"  and then I caught her saying it :D  Who would dream up "fudgemuffin" as an explicative and have it travel the country????

On the felt frontier - it WORKED!!!!!!!  Except I am not in love with the color so I am going to dye it again :D  I actually koolaid dyed the yarn last year with the kiddies as a craft project (start em young!) and will just do it again - pre assembly.  The yarn was actually sock weight that I knit on HUGE needles so when it felted - it is not crazy thick.  BUT for what I am doing - the fabric needs to be sort of sturdy to stand up (wink wink nudge nudge  say no more say no more :D )

You know you're an obsessive crafter when you wake up at 3 in the morning thinking about felt and ways to manipulate it !!!!  Come talk to me at about 8 tonight when I am asleep with knitting needles in hand hoping not to impale myself !  TTFN, Katie

I was having trouble last night getting perfect little black circles for my fella's eyes.  Then it hit me... The hole punch!  It works great.

Sometime I'm going to sneak some felt into my kids' school copy room and use those die cuts on it.  They have a pretty  measly selection, but there is a flower that I like and a cute handprint.

I also was spending last night thinking about my craft. I actually had no idea what to make for my partner till last night when I was laying in my bed! It just hit me. I'm so happy now! Thank goodness next week is spring vacation for me, so I'll plenty of time to perfect the stuffie.

My stuffie is nearly done. I worked on him for about 3 hours straight last night. It took me makeing a huge mistake in my first pattern to go black to plan B and use something that I knew would work. lol. Luckily I have lots of fabric. Sometimes we have to make mistakes to learn right?

I have mostly finished up my stuffies - just the matter of attaching heads to bodies at this point.

I'm really hung up on what to make for my "bonus item". Technically, it doesn't have to be an accessory. Frankly, I only added that part last time because I had some really cute cake and pie shaped erasers that I wanted to send to my partner. :P

I have mine all planned out, just haven't actually started constructing yet--I'm finishing up a BIG stuffie for another swap, and he's taking a lot of time, but I am very proud of him so far (he is sooooo complex). But I should finish him by tomorrow night, and then it's stuffie time!

Since a stuffie/mascot is in the mail, we now have a gallery! There is also a link to it from the first post in this thread. Please try to take pictures of your stuffie before you send in case your partner can't. ;)

i wish i could be crafting RIGHT NOW... but i don't think my boss would be too pleased (yes, i am browsing craftster from work... i'm a hopeless addict).   :-\

It's great to get done early and receive early, but it's not a race!  Sendouts are still more than a week away   :)

I planned with my partner the day I got her. :) I picked two ideas that I knew I could do with supplies I had on hand and few bought things. Then the next day I went to get my little extras. I keep changing my little extras though. My first plan is not working. and plan b is in the works. ;) Plan c and d are ready and waiting in case I call them. lol.

Yesterday I put most of the body together. It just needs to be stuffed and have the head attached, which I will get done this afternoon. Woohoo! This is my first time making a stuffie or really anything three-dimensional and I'm having a great time of it! I made my own pattern and I think it turned out really well.

Then it's on to my bonus items and I'll be ready to ship some time this week!

Okay - I am paniced by the stuffies so far a head of mine, and calmed by the stuffies who are not quite as far along as mine - and pretty pleased at how my stuffie is coming along.

I've had a lot of design challenges to figure out - which is was cogitating on all last week.  Yesterday I worked on seeing how my solutions to the challenges would work - so far so good.

I have to wait until it dried to do any more work though...

I'm the same way - I mostly stick to patterns. I'm hoping that after I build up more "construction" experience that I'll be able to branch out on my own though.

I really want to make a squirrel and I haven't seen a pattern for that so...

Also - my packages should hit the mail today! I just need to get home in time to tuck them into boxes, address them and get them to the post office. I'm super excited for my partners! :D My "bonus" items ended up much cuter than I thought.

The trickiest thing about a squirrel would be his curvy tail.... Unless you did him flat instead of 3-D.  They must not have squirrels in japan because I don't have a pattern for that either.

Yeah, the tail would be the tricky part.  :P

They do have squirrels in Japan, but they are pretty rare. Supposedly, they have them in Hokkaido. I traveled from Hokkaido to Kyushu and never saw a single one though. We have a ton of them at my house and at the University - they were a big hit with the Japanese girls I hosted last year. :D

I made a teeny felt squirrel a week or two ago using the pattern that's listed in the tutorials section; here's the link again:
http://www.puchicollective.com/sewing-patterns/squirrel-pattern/ (http://www.puchicollective.com/sewing-patterns/squirrel-pattern/)

And I posted a picture of the one I made here (after the T-rex): https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=157229.0 (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=157229.0)

I definitely liked the way the tail turned out, since I wouldn't have been able to figure out how to make it not-flat on my own  :P

peihan17- Yours squirrels are awesome!   I found a squirrel pattern in one of my books.  He's pretty cartoony, but awful cute!

Here's the photo spread from that page:

He came from this book ISBN 4834755894:

This book also has felt fast foods, sea creatures, soccer playing dogs and other wee cuteness.

I'm seriously so happy with my stuffie so far. I made the pattern myself! If I don't procrastinate too much I should be done with it today. Seeing as that I'm on vacation and technically I have absolutely nothing to do.

IamSusie, does that squirrel pattern come with an acorn pattern? How cute!

wow = go away from the computer for the weekend and holy cow you guys were busy!  I finished the stuffie this morning - whew!  I really hope she likes it since it's a little weird!  Okay - a lot weird!  Very much a "fantasy" creature - but my daughters each want one so it must be pretty cool!  Will be sending out tomorrow once the "bonus" items are done!  Yeah - this was definitely a stretching since I never follow a pattern the way it's written - always gotta do my own thing - which usually leads to some interesting results - sometimes good sometimes not so - but definitely interesting!  Gotta get back to work - ttfn, Katie

IamSusie: That book is on my list of what next to order from YesAsia. ;)

peihan17: I love that Puchie site. Thanks for sharing it. There is a really cute lamb pattern that I'll have to try after the squirrel.

However, my next stuffie project will be making a duplicate of what I'm sending to Rowdy Vamp Raquel for myself. :D

How cool that you're Painting? your stuffie. I've always wanted to try that.

Not painting - but it was pretty wet for a while - Is drying up quite nicely though- and I could probably work on it some tonight if I have time.

I actually really wanted this book and did a lot of research to find it several months ago. I tracked down the ISBN and unfortunately, its out of print. You can't order it from YesAsia. I thought about buying it from Ebay but those prices are so insane when you know what they really cost in Japan. :P

In other news: I mailed out today! :D

We still have a full week left to craft though so don't feel pressured to send early.

I googled the ISBN numbers only of that book (4391117584) and it appears that it is still available in some places.

If you are brave, you can order it from Amazon Japan.  I hear they are great: just like our Amazon, and cheaper than YesAsia.  It scares me that I have to translate every page, but they'll accept a regular credit card just like other online shopping and it'll automatically exchange the yen for American dollars.

In other news.. since I had to wait around all day for the garage door repairman, I finished sewing my little fella! I still have to do his info, take pictures, and figure out his packaging.

Does the post office allow stickers on thier packages? I was going to put lots on my box but I was afraid that since they had foil undersides(they're glittery and shiney) they would get me in trouble.
I mean it's too late now but has anyone done that before?

I've stuck stickers all over packages, and drawn all over them too :)  If you don't mind some amused looks from the postal people, it should be totally fine.

Done Done Done!!!  It was supposed to be in the mail yesterday - but since I can't just leave something alone when it's done - I had to mess with it just a little more - AND add a few more toys to go with it :D  SOOOO once the bio is done she's on her way!!  I am planning today as the trip to the PO day with my little peanut (must make it a big deal you know)  SINCE the weather in Wisconsin is GORGEOUS right now (low 60's where I am) we'll be walking this adventure!  Have a great day all!  Katie

This is EXACTLY where I'm at. I just finished sending my package, making a birthday gift for a friend, anniversary gifts for my boyfriend, and a commissioned iPod cozy for another friend. I have a personal swap coming up after exams (end of April) but I have a few weeks to kill in the mean time.

I was thinking of making something for myself... but who am I kidding, it will be nice to relax... maybe see the outside world for a few days? Yes. good idea.

Okay - my stuffie is done, and I absolutely love it - as does my mother and sister....

But after looking at the swap gallery I am getting anxious again.  Mine is a totally different style as the ones posted.  And while it is less than 6 inches tall, and less than 6 inches wide - it is more than 6 inches long.  (guess I wasn't paying attention to that dimension when I was designing him)   I am afraid my poor stuffie will feel like a abnormal giant compared to the rest of the class. (is someone projecting her own issues here or what).

Never fear!  :) We tried to pair people according to the level of creativity they were looking for and capable of.  I've been really excited to see what you make, kmac because I stalked you and your gourd painting is terrific and you've made so many cool things!

The size is sort of a guideline, not a hard and fast rule.

How sweet - Even I could not figure out how to make a stuffie out of a gourd - though I could certainly stuff a gourd......

but it is a pretty good bet that the something extra will be gourd related.

Well igobylorib's stuffie is all done, packed and addressed. I just need to take it to the post office during my lunch break.  I am so glad it is ready on time - but I do hate to part with the stuffie.

If you haven't mailed out before today (Monday), please check in with your organizer and let us know what your status is. If you are going to be mailing late, make sure to tell us a date that you think you'll have it in the mail.

Thanks!!
