Title: Knitting Challenge 1: January: One Stitch to Rule Them All - RESULTS INCLUDED
Post by: Lothruin on January 01, 2007 10:28:09 AM
The theme for Craftster's first Knitting Challenge is One Stitch to Rule Them All.  The stitch pattern is moderator's choice, and I've combed my Mon Tricot stitch dictionary to come up with something visually interesting to keep our more advanced knitters from getting too bored, but simple enough that our newer knitters won't feel too intimidated by it.  Given the range of knitting proficiency around here, I thought this was the most fair way to go about it.

So, without further ado, the chosen stitch for this challenge is:
Garter Stitch Lace
Multiples of 2 plus selvage.

Rows 1 to 6: K.
Rows 7 & 9: *YO, K2tog*.
Rows 8 & 10: *YO, P2tog*.
Row 11: Repeat from Row 1

This stitch pattern produces a fabric with dense garter stitch rows alternating with off-center eyelet rows of roughly the same width.  Your project must incorporate this stitch pattern in a prominent way, though it does not have to be the most-used stitch.  As an example:  You could create a stockinette-stitch tank top with a panel of garter stitch lace at the bodice.  So long as the chosen stitch is featured prominently in some way, your project qualifies.

The format:

When posting your challenge entry, please post it under Knitting Challenge Entries. In the message body, post the title of your entry and clear pictures.

The Deadline:

The crafting period will last from now until January 31, with voting from February 1-5.  Yes, this overlaps with the beginning of the next challenge, but we can multi-task, right?

The Prizes (the best part!):

Your choice of patterns from Pieknits.com (http://pieknits.com/patterns.html)
This prize generously donated by Pieknits (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=32497)

Three sets of hand-made stitch markers from Cherry Blossom.
Examples can be seen at the Etsy shop, but those are not neccessarily the markers you'll receive. (http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=2918)
This prize generously donated by Cherry Blossom (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=29149)

Rules:

- Members do not need to have a certain post count or have been a member for so long to participate. Everyone is welcome!
- All items must be handmade by the poster.
- The item must be knitted, but it does not have to be hand-knitted.  Looms and machines qualify.
- Only one entry per poster, though you may incorporate multiple things into your one entry (such as with a set)
- Items can be as big or as small as you want, unless otherwise stated in the theme.
- You must use the theme provided.
- You may use written patterns as a basis for your item.  However, to maintain the primary goal of these challenges (creativity!) you may only use that pattern as a jumping off point; a guide for shaping, etc.  You must post a link to or the book title, author and page number of the pattern, and sufficient changes to the pattern must be obvious.
- this is an important one: Make sure all pictures are visible through the time of voting. Pictures will appear in the voting, so please keep an eye on your bandwidth and hyperlinks!  Entries where the photo links do not work when it comes time to vote will not be included.  Craftster offers reliable picture hosting to registered members and also incorporates photobucket software into the code to make photobucket accounts easier to use. Take advantage of these features!

The Themes:

All themes are suggested and voted on by Craftster members. To suggest a theme to be considered in the next challenge, see this thread: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=136544.0

I'm really glad you chose a stitch that isn't commonly used but not overly challenging. :) Good job.

Rows 1 to 6: K.
Rows 7 & 9: *YO, K2tog*.
Rows 8 & 10: *YO, P2tog*.
Row 11: Repeat from Row 1

Are we able to change this stitch at all?  (I'm thinking double YOs, or something like K rows 1-3, then doing the eyelet rows, then K rows 8-10, just to center the eyelets in the lace panel...)  Looking forward to it!

Well, I think the idea is that you have to do the stitch proposed, so I would say no, you can't change the stitch.  However, if you're worried about centering the lace in the panel, then just knit another 6 rows of garter after the eyelet row, rather than altering the panel to still have 10 rows.  You can do whatever you want before and after the stitch pattern so long as it appears intact.

This is such a cool idea--I'm making little design sketches at work and charting stuff out on Excel  ;D Don't know if I'll be able to crank something out before the 31, but I'm sure gonna try. Thanks for organizing this, Lothruin!

Fun! I like the pattern you chose, Lothruin.  If I can get my shit together, this will be my first craftster challenge.  I already have a few ideas.

I have a small question, would I still qualify for this challenge if I add a crochet border?

just curious.

I'm glad you guys like the stitch I chose.  Librarylass, sure.  I think as long as the project is mostly knitted, things like crochet borders or sewn in linings or what have you shouldn't disqualify.  :D

I am getting a little stuck with YO, P2tog ...

Let's see if I can verbalize my problem: I cannot seem to get the YO to create a stitch thus I end up decreasing my row in half. Any suggestions/help?

modernjanis, I used to have problems with YOs as well, try and find a lace book that explains how to do it properly... anywhere that shows how to do I guess.

good luck!

If I stuck with it, and did not get bored, I could least make a simple scarf.  I mean I like Knitting, it is just that I am impatient.  That is why I got the Kniffy Knitter, hoping it can go a bit fast, and I am trying to actually complete something from a pattern for the first time.  So, even though I might or might not, if I can get it is that is, enter this, at  least I can try to see if I can understand what you mean.  I suck at patterns, it is like another language to me.  So, let me see if I get what the pattern is saying, had to look all this up because I do want to know the terms,
the pattern wants you to just knit 6 rows, then Row 7, you must increase a row, <And this is where I get confuse> what does it mean by K2Tog, that they should be knitted together as one stich, and also on Row 8 do you decrease or make it the same size as Row 7, then on Row 9 increase a row, Same as Row 10, do you decrease or make it the same size.  When you purl, does that mean you go backwards.  Then Row, 11, you just repeat all that over again.  And this ends up suppose to be what is called a Garter Stitch?  And what does it mean multiples of two plus selvage?  Can someone please clear this up for me or am I just to over my head?

Title: Re: Knitting Challenge 1: January: One Stitch to Rule Them All
Post by: librarylass on January 03, 2007 03:32:56 AM
The pattern basically says that for every stitch you decrease (thats the knit 2 stitches together part) you make a stitch to replace it (thats the yarn over) so by logic you SHOULD keep the same amount of stitches no matter what row you are on. Every second row you just knit/purl so that the yarnovers can make the holes and even itself out.

The selvedge is to either stop it curling or just to add a solid line down the edge (I'm not really sure about that). I really hope this helps, feel free to ask if you are still confused.

Hi there,

If you're still having problems, here's a website that has pretty decent pics (near the bottom of the page under the "Visible Increase" section).

http://www.knitting.co.nz/site/page_affix/toaffix_learntoknit6/

Also, I don't know where you're from, but apparently YO means different things in different places.  According to that website, the term is "YRN" when it's between 2 purl stitches, that might be a term that you're more familiar with.  Good luck -- can't wait to see what you come up with!

Title: Re: Knitting Challenge 1: January: One Stitch to Rule Them All
Post by: coral on January 03, 2007 03:58:58 PM
When you yarn over then purl, you have to kinda yo twice.  It will seem like you're yo'ing twice.  You wrap the yarn, this brings it to the front, then you have to wrap around the needle again to complete the yo.  If that makes any sense.

As promised, for those more visually oriented, I have added a scan of the stitch pattern pic out of the Mon Tricot dictionary, so you can see what it is supposed to look like. :D  You'll find the pic next to the stitch pattern in the first post.

a dumb question in here, but it is ok to use some other materials other than the object itself to complete the design? i mean, it iwll be something knitted with yarn but  i might like to add some other things designwise

Title: Re: Knitting Challenge 1: January: One Stitch to Rule Them All
Post by: Lothruin on January 15, 2007 02:14:47 PM
Yeah, if I understand you.  For instance: If you knit a bag, you can add a lining.  If you make a hat, a little crocheted flower attached would be fine.  I think the key here is:  It should be a knitted item with non-knitted finishing touches, accessories, etc.  It should not be a non-knitted item with a knitted bit attached somehow.  Does that make sense?  A knitted bag with fabric lining, yes, a fabric bag with knitted pocket, no.

Could someone give me some tips on how to convert this pattern to be worked in the round? I tried shifting the k2tog over a stitch on the 8th & 10th rows and it's not looking right. I'm not sure I know what I'm doing with this one... :-\

Just jumping in to say this is a such a great stitch. I am making a simple scarf in a gorgeous novelty yarn which is so thin that I have to knit on size 4 needles (not fun). So while my scarf may not be done by 1/31 I am learning the YOs and enjoying this stitch a lot. Thanks for creating it.

Title: Knitting Challenge #1 - One Stitch to Rule them All VOTING CLOSED
Post by: Lothruin on February 01, 2007 07:33:15 AM
I think the first knitting challenge was a resounding success!  All the entries are amazing and really punctuated the versatility of a single stitch.  I hope that everyone who participated in the challenge feels proud of their projects, and that everyone who didn't participate is inspired by the show of creativity.  It really shows you how a relatively simple stitch can be used to beautiful effect in SO many ways, if you just put your mind to it.  I know I will have a rough time picking my vote!  You guys all rock!  I can't wait for the next challenge to start!
