hi :) it's more of a work-in-progress ... and I've never mentioned it here before ... but I'm making a sketchbook from a vintage sewing machine case and some recycled paper/card. that should count as recycling and reconstruction, right?

This board has been such an inspiration for me!  It was just the kick in the arse I needed to make my own reusable grocery bag from old plastic bags that would otherwise be thrown away.

In process-
I work in an IT department so before some old broken things get tossed or salvaged, if they have any crafty value,  I ask my boss if I can "re purpose" them.
Right now, aside from my ever growing collection of dead software cds I have an old 19" CRT Monitor, guts removed. It's getting turned into a cat bed, after its cleaned  and painted. Pics to follow. I'll try to take them as I proceed!

I love those draft stoppers.  I made one for my landlady with a nice fluffy material she loved but didn't know what to do with, and filled it with crumpled plastic bags - she had loads.  It worked very well, but the dog kept thinking it was her toy :D

I did see the tutorial on plastic fusing too, and had to try it immediately!  I came up with this:
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=284982.msg3375492#msg3375492
which is now holding my whiteboard markers.
And now I'm off to make a pet mat prototype, one side fluffy and the other plastic.

This was made out of a ring of plastic cut from a plastic soda bottle. I then found some fabric I liked and decoupaged it on. after a few more layers and it dried I outlined the designs on the fabric with a gold leaf pen just to make it pop a bit then sealed it with two layers of clear coat.

One has fabric from my bridesmaid's dresses, another has  jewelry bits from my grannie's junk jewellry, maybe a button from a favorite childhood blazer, or bits picked up from a trip to Toronto....all good memories  ;D

Can't wait...1 more week until the Santa Claus Parade & our family tradition is to come home from it that evening, set up the tree, put on Bing Crosby's classic Christmas music & brew some hot chocolate in the jumbo "Christmas mugs" that only come out that time of year..6 more sleeps!  ;)
I still have a lot more to make - Yikes!

Surprised Reindeer - festive recycled manufactured clothes pins.

Don't throw out the old ones, the older the better!

Add a magnet to the back and they are note holders for your fridge, a decoration for a small tree, a topper for that special gift, a festive way to hang the laundry.....NOT! :-)

Old clothes pins, liquid paper, a black sharpie, pipe cleaners some felt cut into tiny holy leaves and a gold star....glue gun. :-)  Happy Holiday

Okay, lets see if i got this right. I saw this toilet roll race car while working in an other afternoon club and i decided to make slightly different version for my own work place.
Children can of course make their own versions too as can be seen in the pictures. After i made my model i decided that i was not happy with it so i recrafted it in to an sort of End of the world road warrior or something like that.
Everything except drivers head and grill sticks is recycling material.
If i understood the rules properly, i must make 10 posts like this before i can put pictures here?

Title: Magazine Scrap Spartan
Post by: nazarets on December 30, 2010 07:59:04 PM
I've been on a craft recycling binge.  I have been using up my stash, or shopping at the thrift store to make gifts for this holiday season.

My brother in law is a major Michigan Spartans fan.  I saw a bunch of threads of people using magazines and shredding them up for art, so that is what I did.  I cut out a bunch of pages that had green on them from magazines, put them through the paper shredder and then spent an hour or so gluing them down to card stock.  Printed a pic of the spartan helmet and cut it out, then mounted it on white paper.  My 9 year old DD helped me glue and mount the pic.

The whole shebang....

Closeup so you can see the magazine shreds.

C & C welcome!

Here's an other project i started to make from all the left overs from other crafts and stuff that otherwise would have gone to the waste basket.
Eyes are from store. They are sold in small bags with different sizes and shapes.
Markings are cut from junk mail.
The red one took more effort because of the secret hiding place. Other two, well, i just started to glue stuff together without any specific plans and result is what it is.
I also used cord that i opened and painted for grass and used tea bags for ground.
To make propaganda pictures i used paint.net.
These were such fun to make, so i think I'm going to return to this project later.

Here's one of my early works. I used egg carton, cardboard, toothpicks, paper and matches to make two Tie fighters.
I printed some pictures and started to work.
These were quite easy and fun to make. I used slightly different methods for each one. Skulls are from junk mail.
For wings and canopy i used black felt-tip pen since paint would have made them curl up.
I think i'm going to return to this project later too.

An other Star Wars related work made from trash; cardboard, egg carton, paper, etc. At first i had problems because i was trying to make it look like the original version. But then i just started to glue stuff together and things started to move along.
Diorama setting is only temporary since i don't have space to keep them. I make them just to take pictures and then i pack everything away.

Here is the tutorial.

I made this Hello Kitty tank mostly from egg carton. Those are an excellent source of material for crafting.
Gun barrel is dry marker pen.
Large piece of cardboard for base. I glued coffee and tea grounds on it and then i sprayed paint.
Pictures tell you better  how it was made than my crappy english  :-[.

More Star Wars related stuff. Originally i wanted to make an easy model for children to make but i got carried away and made an Hello Kitty X-wing and X-wing from jasta 11. The usual material was used, also played with paint.net again.
Now i wrote English for tutorial, please let me know if there are any bad mistakes.

With these two models the most time-consuming part was the engines. So this was the longest project this far. But good fun anyway!

Well, it wasn't too swift of me to not take 'before' pics, but I did not originally have the intention of posting this....
I inherited a cat bank, bright purple with jazzy painting all over it. Not to my taste. I just started volunteering for my local animal shelter, who, of course always needs money. I figured the bank just showed up in my life for a reason! I thought if I made it cute enuf, more folks would put in their quarters and dimes. I hung info on our rescue group around the kitty's neck. The whiskers are real!!  I have been doing cat rescue for 20 years and now have a collection of over 1000 whiskers which I would find in the sofa, on my bed, and on the floor....

This kind. Mine was from frying oil but today I saw washing liquid in this kind of canisters as well.

The latter two apparently measure in gallons though so I suspect they're US-made.

How to cut is under the link in my original post in the gardening forum.

What do do with "old" or "small" clothes you can't be bothered to sell/give : cut them into pieces to make jewels. It didn't take that long, and I got a great way to treat my friends for next Christmas.

Three projects from old leaky waders combined with house-hold cast offs all in one thread. Why there's even a semi-tutorial in the middle. Like a leaky wader sandwich. Ha ha, sorry if it's dinner time in your time-zone.  :D

https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=421556.0#axzz2QZ9Ub47B

By the way, these waders were used many times during the Earth Day river clean up that I organize annually on my favorite trout stream in Wisconsin. The odd barb-wire fence between me and some litter probably hastened their demise.

Our "gazebo" died this winter, or should I say in a freak Spring snow storm.  What was left intact were the four corners.  My rockstar gf, saved them for garden trellises, but then came this idea, which I love.  She cut off the top six inches, they didn't add to the design.  She bolted the four corners together and then cut sunshade material to fit and screwed the material into it.  We don't live in a fancy neighborhood so we just wired it to the fence in two inconspicuous places and used small yard stakes to secure the bottom.  LOVE it!

Finally got my hands on the guitar pick punch I bought my brother for Christmas (along with a glass scorer - MAN APPROVED CRAFTS! :P) and took it to some of the old gift cards I have been hoarding.

Edges need to be filed somewhat and I'm thinking about sealing them with varnish or modpodge or something but very pleased with the results. Next attempt will be on an old vinyl record.

Thank you. It's glued with a hot glue gun. The handles are from shirts cut up and can be held many different ways and ribbon to decorate and hide the edges of the bags. I think it would be much nicer if I had sewn it but this was quicker than trying to get at my machine to thread and load the bobbin. My granddaughters love it and now want to collect  the drink bags from their schools to recycle into cool projects like this.

Made  a few rayguns.
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=432359.0#axzz2xBIq4L89

Two of them have water pistols  as the base, one a toy barbie hairdryer. Pomegranate juice bottles, old earrings, a computer key, ect. Stands and plaques were laminate shelving pieces, and the  base to a broken aqua light, all scavenged from junk day. Stand also uses the plastic tube from a roll of receipt paper, a found round metal bit, pizza box plastic stand, and beads.
Also fixed up a clock from Goodwill. https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=432356.0#axzz2xBIq4L89
I painted old gift cards green, cut them up,  and glued them to the back where the cut outs in the clock frame were. Then glued on random things like broken watch pieces, washers and metal bits, charms, keys,a few beads, a small bit of pyrite, ect. The 'angel' is a two way splitter from the thrift store, with a bolt, two small charms from my stash for wings, and a random plastic piece painted gold for the halo.

I'm just loving seeing all the wonderful stuff everyone's made and can't wait to share some of my work with you too.

I'm very new to Craftster and still can't post pics, but my avatar is a pic of a basket I made out of plastic bottles and plarn (I'm sure I don't have to explain plarn to anyone who frequents this board). It's actually SLIGHTLY less wonky than it looks in the avatar, the pic got quite distorted.

I'm working on lots of different projects at the moment. Currently in the pipeline is another ribbed plarn basket (it's nearly finished but I've run out of the right bags), a couple of log cabin quilt collages (one with security envelopes and one with magazine paper) and a fused plastic project using the scraps left from making the plarn for my baskets.  Where would it be appropriate to post pics of works in progress? That's usually as far as most of my projects get!

More recycled toys. My latest project "Spiky" was inspired by pwtomczak's "Stick Around" zombie killer car. Saw it when visiting AmericanScaleModel.freeforums.org. Maybe it's not very practical having spikes stuffed with rotting zombie flesh but i think those spikes look good. AK fluids were used for weathering again.

It is hard to believe that something so lovely could be created from tea bags!  I love all of the colors you managed to get...and the transparency of the "paper" just makes this a light and happy piece!

This summer we bought a lovely little table for the conservatory. The old table really was way to big but there was nothing wrong with the chairs that a lick of paint wouldn't fix and over the past couple of days that is exactly what I have been doing.
On my blog is a photo of the chairs before I got my hands on them if anyone is interested

A couple of weeks ago a bag of sugar split in my handbag. I thought I was being really good by refusing the plastic bag. ''No thanks says I, it will fit into my handbag'' (yeah it is a big handbag). I had to empty all the sugar out and of course I couldn't find a spare container for the sugar so had to put it into a bowl.  This afternoon I have cut down a milk container,  punched holes all around the top and then crocheted a band around it.  I now have a yen to fill my cupboard with containers in a rainbow of crocheted colours.  Flour, rice,  soup mix.  In fact anything that comes in a bag may get its own little container now.  I did of course disgrace myself by scrabbling about in the recycle bin to retrieve the milk carton.

Cherie, your tea bags are amazing. Tea bags are about the only thing I remember to feed to the worms instead of the chooks so they would probably all die if I started using them for craft . ::)

Cherie--unbelievable!  I had no idea one could even embroider on  tea bags!  I like your container idea as well, but we have to have lids on everything since insects and rodents can be a problem. It would be nice to see some color on the containers in the pantry!

I have been tumbling some of my sea glass collection in my rock tumbler. I love to pick up the chalky smudgy coloured glass off the beach whenever we take a seaside holiday. There is quite a large collection in my stash so I have been playing with it all these past few days. Yesterday I put some of the pieces into my rock tumbler to see how well they would polish. I don’t want to make them too shiny as I love the chalkiness of the colours. I put a milk carton lid in the picture to give you an idea of size. I would love to know what kind of glass the opal one is though. Pity it doesn’t show too well in the photo as it is gorgeous.

My lovely neighbours Joan and Bryan bring me little parcels of  ' recycled things you might be able to use'. They choose their bleach bottles with me in mind.  Joan was telling me that they stand in front of the bleach display and say ' I wonder if Cherie has that colour'  :-)   Foil packaging has been a recent addition to the parcels. It is Bryan's 80th birthday on Sunday so of course the card I made him has to be made from upcycled things doesn't it?????    The letters and tools are all die cut from a foil pie dish. I cut the tools from card too so that I could stick the 'metal bits' onto the card die cuts to make them look realistic.  I know it will make Bryan smile and Joan shake her head....... we aim to please   :-)

It seems that we, as a modern culture, have forgotten to use what we have on hand...I remember clearly my great-grandmother saving ANY scrap of fabric...if a towel got ratty, she would cut off the pieces that were still good and eventually sew all the pieces together to make a new towel...she saved bits of ribbon, bottles, corks, etc. I am glad to see more and more people interested in not throwing things away that could be repurposed.

While I was in Japan, I noticed that many Japanese people used the boxes for storage and organization...they do not have the space to use plastic tubs and containers like we have here. My own mother saved bags and cans...lol...our silver ware was stored on the counter in cans she decorated and my crayons were stored in a milk carton!

It would be fun to attend one of your classes!

Thank you x.....  tuck the packet of fimo in your bra or next to your tummy while you are sitting watching TV.  the warmth from your body will soften it a little.  Then you just have to keep kneading it until it stops dropping crumbs all over the place. Once you reach the non crumbly stage you just keep on kneading till it's nice and pliable...... you might prefer my  'north yorkshire's craft guru' blog.  kind of the same as the other one but much more fun and aimed at us crafters rather than schools/colleges.

The chocolate bars come in packs from Aldi's. They cost about £1.19 for five bars and their are several different varieties. They make great little gifts and would be ideal for the kids to make on a cold winter's day. It doesn't need to be Christmas for them to wrap a chocolate bar.

It is mincepie season and what better way to hide the evidence than to turn the little foil dishes into leaves. I am looking out for a really sturdy branch and then I plan to wire them to the branch and stick in a pot in my conservatory. Oh! and no, I didn’t eat all these. It was my carving club Christmas get together last night. Someone had said that I was collecting the foil dishes (I wasn’t actually). I ended up with a whole pile of them. I hadn’t even thought of a project for them at that point :-)

I am really pleased that you are interested... They are really dead easy. Leave the bread out overnight to go stale. Cut the crust off and feed it to the birds. I use a food processor that I keep for crafting but you can make it by hand... it is really sticky though but does become a lovely clay when you work all the glue in. Put the stale bread into the food procsessor and squeeze in a bit of PVA glue. I can't give exact quantities as it depends how stale and thick the bread is. I reckon four medium slices to about a tablespoon of glue. If it is too sticky add more bread... if it is too dry add a bit more glue. I whizz it all up until it starts to come together in a very loose ball of sticky crumbs. Lift it out of the food processor and work it with your hands until it becomes a nice soft dough like consistency. Keep it wrapped in cling flim while you work or it will go really crumbly and dry (add more glue to rescue it) and break off small pieces at a time. Work a bit of food colouring or acrylic paint into each piece as you go along. I used some little moulds et voila....... I keep mine in the freezer.. Wrap it in cling film andd store in an old margarine tub in the freezer..................bet you try this one. xxxxxx

Details of how I put the brooches together and all sorts of utter rubbish on my blog if you are interested

Those are really lovely and so detailed!  We don't really eat bread suitable for this...but maybe if we go out to eat and there are any bread baskets brought to the table, I could take them home.  I remember making bread dough ornaments when I was a child and every family ate Wonder bread! ;D

I spent a little time yesterday beading around my bread clay brooch.  The end result is really pretty and to think it is nothing more than stale bread, a piece of cardboard and a handful of beads. I have sewn a brooch back onto this one but you could just as easily sew a small safety pin.

Thank you. xxx   I used my 'Bigshot die cutting machine' and a couple of dies.  Paper punches wouldn't be strong enough to punch the plastic.  The Bigshot is my best piece of crafting kit.  This is my second one and if it broke I would buy another the same day. I use it for so many things.

Eggshell mosaic....... I finished the packet of breakfast cereal yesterday morning so I put the empty box near the back door to take out to the recycle bin........ it didn't get that far as I had a couple of dark eggshells drying on my windowsill which I had intended to add to my eggshell stash.... Everyone has an eggshell stash don't they???   Hmm, as usual tis just me then I guess..... Anyway, before I go off on a tangent and start telling you about the gorgeous apple, raisin and fudge scone I had yesterday I will tell you about this little bit of junk art.   I cut two rectangles from the cereal box and glued them together to make the card a little stronger.  Then I cut two butterflies from a bit more of the box.  This is a craft that really does cost nothing more than a bit of glue and a lot of patience. I will go back and fill some of the more noticeable space with more shell when I have a minute today.

Title: Re: We want to see!!!! Completed Projects Links!
Post by: Junk4Joy on April 11, 2015 01:19:54 AM
Actually Cherie, I too have an eggshell stash. To be honest, I just save them to feed back to the chooks as grit.  I have often contemplated making an eggshell mosaic though, yours is lovely.

I found a tutorial online somewhere where they just pushed largish chunks onto the gluey surface until it broke, looked a lot easier than individually applying each tiny bit. They also then coloured the mosaic with alcohol inks which looked very effective, but I'm too tight to spend that much. I want to make my own alcohol inks with my daughter's old textas but rubbing alcohol is not cheap either (not in Australia, anyway).

Now, I do have other obscure stashes of craft supplies (no such thing as rubbish!) that I bet no one else does. Like the plastic rings from plastic bottles and jars. I scare myself sometimes with the things I can't bare to throw away.

Cherie--very nice!  I really is lovely!

I save eggshells for the garden...along with coffee grounds and filter...I should save a few!  I should have saved the dyed shells from the Easter eggs...

Junk4Joy--I agree that alcohol inks are so expensive.  I followed a tutorial to make my own using "empty" Sharpie markers.  Rubbing alcohol is cheap here, about $2. I have found out that if you go to the home DIY stores, you can buy it cheaper because it is not considered "medical"...denatured alcohol...it is meant for cleaning brushes and is cheap by the gallon. You can also use vodka if that is cheaper! ;D

Title: Re: We want to see!!!! Completed Projects Links!
Post by: Junk4Joy on April 16, 2015 08:45:01 PM
Vodka and rubbing alcohol seem to cost about the same, but the rubbing alcohol is a higher %. I checked out the hardware store for isopropyl and they didn't have any, but denatured alcohol is methylated spirits, right? I'm sure I read somewhere that metho doesn't work but I've got some under the sink already, couldn't hurt to try. It's certainly cheap and I can buy it at the supermarket. I'm more concerned about wasting the worn out markers than wasting metho, lol. It can take my daughter quite a while to run one dry.

Title: Re: We want to see!!!! Completed Projects Links!
Post by: Junk4Joy on April 17, 2015 04:03:36 PM
So, I tried making alcohol ink with methylated spirits and it didn't really work. The metho sucked the ink out of the markers ok, but it just doesn't stain the way a Sharpie does (my only experience with alcohol ink).

I didn't have any rubber gloves to wear when squeezing out the ink cartridges so I slipped my hands inside a couple of zip lock bags, and they just rinsed clean with water. I then tried some on an aluminium can and I could wipe it straight off with paper towel even after it appeared to be dry. It has, however, stained my hands wonderfully, in spite of the zip lock bag effort.

I'm sure the tutorials I've seen don't require the markers to be of the permanent variety, so it must be the methylated spirits I guess. I might have to try with some vodka, at least that way if it doesn't work I can still drink the rest of the bottle!

Thank you both.  My friends now all try to guess what I have upcycled when making things. This summer I was addicted to making boats from upcycled breakfast cereal boxes covered in papier mache. I made them in loads of different sizes.  I will leave you with a few photo of other things that I have made.  I am pleased as punch to tell you that I won 1st prize in the recycling section at our local Country Show this summer with my backpack made from pop tabs.  The little flower brooch I  made using flowers that I made from stale bread and pva glue. I treated it like a cabochon and beaded around it.  I made loads and gave them away to friends. The paper fuchsia flowers are uncycled envelopes.

Have a wonderful Christmas. xxx

I have been doing a lot of knitting and crochet these past few months. I snip the stray ends off and drop them into a little plastic bin as I work.  Last weekend I delivered a needle felting workshop  and when I got home I had a brainwave......  I wondered if the snips and scraps of yarn ends could be felted...... so I tried it.....  Yay, it works.   I put a very fine layer of roving down first,  topped it with a thickish layer of snips of fluffy acrylic yarn,  topped this with another fine layer of roving and needle felted it.  Then I needle felted some fluffy acyclic yarn to make a teddy bear .

Every year I save cards with the idea of doing fun things with them and every year I end up putting the stack into the recycle bin. I love your little houses, they are ADORABLE! Did you use a diecut for them? I'm thinking this would be a great craft to do with my kids and their friends, they look like they could mail flat for card inserts to our family and friends. Some coats of modpodge and they'd make slightly more durable tree ornaments too.  Love them!

Take one wine bottle
Hic, burp giggle...    Empty the wine bottle...… You could of course ask someone to empty it for you but that isn't as much fun...:-)  Wash it, dry it and remove the sticky residue left behind by the label.  Stuff it with a string of battery operated LED lights from the local pound shop...
