Title: Teeny Tiny butterfly journals
Post by: AnonymousContent on October 29, 2006 03:35:01 PM
These are journals I made after seeing an article in a magazine on them.  They intrigued me so I just had to make me a few.  Were fun to make and it was even more fun to see people's face when they realized they are very small journals.

Just gorgeous!  Perfect size for purses, christmas stockings, adorning larger gifts and more.  I too would be interested in a "how to".

Imagine wrapping someone's gift in a floral wrap and then tying one of these on with ribbon... it would be such a nice way to "double gift" someone.

Thank you for the compliments.

Easy...easy to make.  Find picutres of  a butterfly you like. Print the picture on to cardstock(whatever color you desire)then cut them out.
Use the cut out for template to trace the pages to match the pattern of the wings on the cover and cut the pages out. I found it easier to use the small scissors instead of large ones.  I have a set of three scissors that are esp for small paper cutting.

I used a bone folder to crease the individual journal pages, then stacked them together open on top of one another, folded them all together and gave them another good burnishing with the bone folder.

Put the cover over the pages and once again  I used the bone folder on it, stab small holes in the spine of the journal.I used my soft doll sculpting needle to pierce the spine.  No particular number of holes. I punched according to the body size.

I used fuzzy knitting yarn for the spine b/c I thought it gave an appearance of legs and antenna. Threading this stuff was the hardest part really but FINALLY I got it threaded and then just went in and out of the holes I made ending at the top so I could cut it and it look like antennas.

These were really fun to make and you can make them in any size you want to.  You can also color in the cover with paint, markers, glitter or gel inks.  Can attach it to a beaded string for a necklace, or attach it to the end of a string for a book thong.

Don't worry if you are not exactly lined up with the page and cover.
I had this happen with one of them and I just went back and trimmed with my scissors.

Now that I think of it you could use this techinque and make gecko journals, flamingo journals.  All kind of images can be used. Huh, now I have filled my head with other possibilities and may have to experiment.  LOL

Those really are gorgeous, but I'm confused as to how you bound them.  I can't see the bodies very well in the picture, and I'm a very visual person so I'm having a hard time understanding! :-\  How did you thread them to get the antennae and legs?

Just punch your holes along the spine and stitch in/out up/down the spine.  I used a stab stitch method but you can use any method you like really.

What gives them that realistic look is the type of string I used.
I has spikey thread coming off the original thread.

These are really sweet! You did a fantastic job and I really appreciate your taking the time to write out the how-to.

I'm off to go make some with SCAL now :) No scissors needed.

I was thinking I might try sewing it with dark button thread and just sewing the body (perfect choice, that funky yarn) to the spine as I go to avoid having to thread the fuzzy stuff.

I think I have some cute butterfly stickers that are large enough too... oooh, so many choices. Thanks for inspiring us.
