Title: tree ornaments from scraps with tutorial! (complete w/ photos)
Post by: ImaHoundDog on October 16, 2006 02:33:34 PM
Even though it's not even Halloween I made some Christmas tree ornaments because I can actually have one this year! New house =new decorations for everything :O) These are just made from cardboard and scrap fabric and trimmings. I like the yellow one best.

My newest ones

You need cardboard (cereal or cracker boxes are a good thickness)
             scotch tape
             white glue that dries clear
old paint brush to spread the glue evenly
             hot glue and glue gun
             fabric or pretty paper
trim or ribbon (i used a single crochet chain for mine) tassels
or what ever you like that is 4 times the
length of your ornament so you have enough
                                  to hang it

Okay here's how to make them

1. make a stencil what ever size you like, mine are 5 and 1/2 inches
long. Cut 3 out of the cardboard and 3 of fabric or paper

2. now tape the 3 cardboard shapes only together so it looks like this

it doesn't have to be perfect, it will be covered up later.

3. Once you have you 3-d shape together, brush the white glue onto one side and lay your fabric or paper on and smooth it out
Now repeat on other 2 sides. trim any excess that sticks of the sides.

4. now you're ready for the trim, I found it easier to hot glue a little at a time, about half the edge at a time so it doesn't dry too fast. Also the wider flatter trims are easier to work with (and to cover imperfect edges and you don't see the dried glue. Make sure you have enough for a loop to hang it

For the ones with the crocheted trim I knotted it at the top to make the loop, then just tuck in the ends with a large needle,

I also sewed the tassels on with embroidery thread or leftover yarn. Embelish however you like.

And there you go! They don't take long to make at all, if you make  a few at a time it's alot easier and quicker than doing them seperately. Guess what most of my family are getting as gifts this year? :O)

I would love to see what you guys come up with too!

Those are very pretty!  I am going to make some ornaments using scraps as well and give them as gifts.  I just am on a mission to get all my things done early this year as it comes so quickly!

I love the elongated designs!

Love them-what kind of glue did you use? TIA

thanks for the compliments!  I used plain white glue to glue the fabric to the cardboard and a hot glue gun for the trims.

Joler79 - yes, they are are made from 3 oval petal shapes to make ithem 3-dimensional

Snowyangel - of course, I actually got the idea from a 70's embroidery magazine, the entire thing was intricatley stitched by hand with designs like you see on Ukranian easter eggs.

Cool thanks a bunch! How did you affix the trimmings on there? Glue, sewn on...?

Oooh, I like! I really love chattyKathi's purple one, and ImaHoundDog's white and black flower one. I think I have to go sneak in to my mom's stash and "borrow" some fabric...

Really good idea!
