Title: Tutorial: Zipper pocket (messenger bag & jordy bag)
Post by: SewPixie on August 23, 2004 01:48:15 PM
First...a Jordy bag I made a while back: http://sewpixie.tinfoildreams.com/images/bag_1.jpg

Second: I started on a messenger bag last week (used the tutorial here - and forgot to upload the pic! GOSH).

I'm not sure if anyone has posted this method for a zipper pocket in the lining, but in case no one has here is how I did it:

Step 1: Determine what size you want for your pocket and cut 1 pocket facing and 1 pocket back. Interface if desired. Place pocket facing on top of the bag lining piece you want - right sides together.
http://sewpixie.tinfoildreams.com/images/zippocket_step1.jpg

Step 2: Draw a rectangle for your zipper opening on the zipper facing. Draw a line through the center and 'arrow heads' at the ends.
http://sewpixie.tinfoildreams.com/images/zippocket_step2.jpg

Step 3: Stitch the pocket facing to the bag lining around the zipper opening rectangle you drew in step 2.
http://sewpixie.tinfoildreams.com/images/zippocket_step3.jpg

Step 4: Remember that center line and 'arrowhead' lines you drew? Cut on those lines.
http://sewpixie.tinfoildreams.com/images/zippocket_step4.jpg

Step 5: Pull the pocket facing to the wrong side of the bag lining through the cut you made in step 4.
http://sewpixie.tinfoildreams.com/images/zippocket_step5.jpg

Step 6: Now the bag lining and pocket facing are wrong sides together. Press the zipper facing and now you have a rectangle shaped hole in the facing.
http://sewpixie.tinfoildreams.com/images/zippocket_step6.jpg

Step 7: Baste, glue, tape, pin your zipper in the opening. I use wash-away double-sided tape.
http://sewpixie.tinfoildreams.com/images/zippocket_step7.jpg

Step 8: Sew your zipper in to place. Your stiching will go through the pocket facing, zipper, and the bag lining piece.
http://sewpixie.tinfoildreams.com/images/zippocket_step8.jpg

Step 9: Pin your pocket back to the pocket facing (don't pin it to the bag lining piece if you do not want the stitching to show on the lining).
http://sewpixie.tinfoildreams.com/images/zippocket_step9.jpg

Step 10: Stitch the pocket back to the pocket facing all the way around.
http://sewpixie.tinfoildreams.com/images/zippocket_step10.jpg

Step 11: Enjoy your new zippered pocket!

I'll have a picture of the finished bag here soon.  :P

Thanks for posting your tutorial - it's very helpful! (And that polka dot fabric of yours is pretty fantastic, too. :) )

Wow!  Thank you for the excellent tute!  The pocket looks very professional.  I'd like to see the polkadot messenger bag.  I love the plaid bag!

;D I'm glad tute may be helpful. I have a TON of zippers and buttons so I look for ways to use them on everything.

Here are the pics of the messenger bag

Also, I made a drawstring top Jordy for a co-worker with a zippered pouch in the middle (sort of a zippered divider):

Approx. 10" wide, 7.75" tall, 1.5" deep. The strap is about 44" long.  :) <-- Messenger bag

If I recall correctly the front, back, and flap pieces started out 11" x 9". The zipper is about 7".

I have some orange fabric that also goes with the polka dot fabric so that may turn into either a larger messenger bag or an attempt at one of those teardrop shaped bags.

that is one very nice lookin messenger bag. did you use a tutorial, or could you provide one? it doesn't look too complicated but i'd like to see how you did it. :)

Title: Re: Yet another zipper pocket tutorial (& my bags)
Post by: SewPixie on August 24, 2004 03:32:40 PM
I used Gloriana's messenger bag tutorial (the one near the top of the list), just having the bag wider and using buttons instead of the snap she used. You're right, it wasn't very complicated. I was worried about the gusset at first but using the tips from the tutorial made it easy.

I tried your zipper method and it's sooo easy! Before, I was kinda scared of puttin' in a zipper in a purse.   Just went to Hancock's and got 12 zippers on sale!  Yahoo!  Thanks, SewPixie!

Thank You!!!

I have read and re-read all of the zipper posts, and it just wouldn't "click" with me... I re-read this one a few times and finally the lightbulb came on and I GET IT! I thought it would never happen LoL.... now I gotta go make a bag with a zipper pocket before I lose it  :D

yay! I'm so happy the tute is helping other people out.

i'm happy to report that the zipper pockets are holding up really well. i may experiment with other opening shapes (like a wavy one instead of a straight rectangle). i'll post if it turns out well.

not sure how many other people use the double-sided wonder tape but i highly recommend it! it works great on zippers and for hems and stuff for stretchy material.

The plaid one with one button? That one was made using the Jordy tutorial.

The pink messenger bag with 2 buttons? That one was made using Gloriana's gusset messenger bag tutorial.

 ;D

I've made a couple other bags lately and an outfit for a holiday party but I have been so busy at work I haven't posted them yet. :(

I need a clarification--I don't understand the difference between the pocket facing and pocket lining. In that example when you look into the pocket, one side of the pocket is red and one side is polka dots?

Title: Re: Zipper pocket tutorial (messenger bag & jordy bag)
Post by: SewPixie on December 26, 2004 08:44:02 PM
What I call the pocket facing (i had no idea what to call it) is the polka dot pocket piece that will get the zipper in it. The solid color piece (i think i call it pocket lining or pocket back) is what you'll see when you open the pocket. Hope that helps. :)

I really wanted to have the outer fabric displayed on the inside too!

Title: Re: Zipper pocket tutorial (messenger bag & jordy bag)
Post by: SewPixie on January 05, 2005 02:39:09 PM
Yes, the white is interfacing on the back of the spotted fabric pocket piece.

Basically stitch the pocket piece to the bag (right side to right side). Slash through the middle of the rectangle you sewed, almost to the edge. Then cut from the end of the slash diagonally to the corners. Now take that pocket piece and pull it to the other side of the bag piece through the hole you just cut.

Hope that helps!

And thanks 'begin again'! I so miss posting new projects. *sniff* I'm hoping soon I'll have some more stuff. Craftster withdrawl is horrible!!!

When you all shorten zippers, do you shorted the open end or the closed end? I've seen instructions for both, but uncertain which would be better. How do you create the new stops?

Thanks.

I do it by sewing many times, tightly, around and around at the end towards the current stop. This makes a good new stop and you can cut off the rest at that end a half-inch or so past the new stop.

I just want to say, I followed these instructions for the first time and...

... They RAWK!... it was so totally easy and made sense when you were doing it.

My only problem was that while I was finishing top stitching the zipper at the end, I messed up cause I went AROUND the zipper pull. I didn't think enough to move the zipper out of the way before finishing. And I think someone said you should tape the little flaps down to keep them even.

SewPixie- Hi! I was looking for your zippered pouch/divider thing in the red drawstring bag and couldn't find it. Here it is! Yay! Someone was asking about dividers in the discussion section and I wanted to post it. Did you do a tute on this? If so where is it? If not, could you tell me how you got the edges to stay in place in the bag. Did you catch the edges in the side seams or the bottom? Do yo think you could do a tute on this if you haven't already?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I remembered that bag and couldn't find it. Now that I have I wondered how you did it. Thanks a bunch. I have missed your posts!!!

Sew Pixie,

These instructions are so awesome. I've used them twice now to add pockets to bags I've made.
If I had a digi cam, I'd put them up but alas. ::)

Anyhow, just wanted to write and say thank you for such a clear, concise and well thought out tutorial. I was intimidated by a zipper pocket before and your tute changed all that!

im sorry i really dont understand the pull through part.

also, in the end result, i can't tell whether or not the stiches are visable.

i read the other replys but im still confused.

Thanks

Title: Re: Zipper pocket tutorial (messenger bag & jordy bag)
Post by: Fidget on October 05, 2005 07:20:10 PM
toomuchrock, the end result of pulling the lining through the slot is to have the lining right side out with the rectangular hole and the pocket lining also right side out w/hole but its on the backside, facing the other way.  The stitching that was done around the rectangular hole is now the edge of the rectangular hole and shouldn't really be visible.

Does that help?  If not, let me know and I'll try to explain it a different way.

Title: Re: Zipper pocket tutorial (messenger bag & jordy bag)
Post by: toomuchrock on October 05, 2005 07:24:55 PM
i think the first sentence confused me more than i was before.

i know that you stick the pocket face and the lining together, cut a hole, then pull it through to make the rectangle hole... but after that it doesnt mention anything about pulling anything through again.

thats where im lost

Title: Re: Zipper pocket tutorial (messenger bag & jordy bag)
Post by: Fidget on October 05, 2005 07:49:14 PM
Ah, ok.  I think I see the problem here.  We're ultimately going to be working with three pieces of fabric: the lining for the bag, the front of the pocket and the back of the pocket (the part you'll see when you open the zipper).  After you put the bag lining and pocket front right sides together, sew and cut the hole, you only need to pull the lining through once.   Now the lining is facing right side out and so is the front of the pocket.  After sewing the zipper in, the pocket is completed by putting the back side of the pocket (that 3rd piece of fabric) right sides together with the front of the pocket and sewing around the pocket pieces only.  When the zipper is opened, you'll see the right side of the back of the pocket.

So, the front of the completed piece is the right side of the bag lining with a zipper.  Flip the lining over and you'll see the wrong side of the bag lining and the wrong side of the back of the pocket, which is sewn only to the front part of the pocket.  The pocket looks like a empty little inside out pillow attached to the wrong side of the bag lining.

Is that better?

Title: Re: Zipper pocket tutorial (messenger bag & jordy bag)
Post by: toomuchrock on October 05, 2005 08:08:23 PM
so the stiching around the zipper is visable?

thats what im ultamately confused about i think.

i can do zippers that i found on another tutorial, but i think these look better

Title: Re: Zipper pocket tutorial (messenger bag & jordy bag)
Post by: Fidget on October 05, 2005 08:32:22 PM
Yes, there will be a visable row of stitches around the rectangle when you sew in the zipper.  And then you attach the back section of the pocket.

This is a nice looking zippered pocket when it is done.  Give it a whirl and it'll probably all click as you are doing it or at least by the time it's done.

(PS: I love the dancing whatzit in your avatar. :))

ooo brubendall pretty bag.

arrhythmia: I think on the red one it is caught on the bottom and the sides. I did not do a tute and I gave it to a friend. I will ask her to check. In the mean time I will work on it some on another attempt at it. I have and old one I did with a zippered divider pocket so I will look at that one too.

toomuchrock: Yes, the stitching around the zipper will be visible.

The pocket is 2 pieces, a front and back. The front piece is the 'facing' for the zipper hole. You put your main fabric (the lining for your bag, or whatever piece you want showing at the end) right side with the facing piece. Stich the rectangle, then cut the slit inside of it.

You take that facing piece and put it through the slit and over to the other side of the main fabric. Once you press it you now still have those two pieces together, but now instead of right sides facing the wrong sides are facing and you have a nice and neat rectangle 'window' through the middle them. The zipper goes in the window and you stitch the zipper in place going through the main fabric, the facing, and the zipper. You could probably also hand or machine stitch the zipper to just the facing if you did not want the stitching to show.

Now to make it a pocket and not just a zipper sitting there you take the other pocket piece and stitch it to the facing.

I love this tute!  It has become my standard pocket, because it's so easy and great-looking!  I have also used it as a zipperless pocket, because I Like the way it shows off the pocket fabric especially when it contrasts with the lining fabric, as it does in this bag.  Hope you can see it.

I think I understand the directions and looking forward to trying it out.  :)I have one question. After the zipper is put in can you see the whole zipper when looking inside the pocket?  It doesn't matter to me if it's visiable inside I just want to make sure I'm understanding the directions.
Thanks

BIG THANK YOU for all the very comprehensive photos of making ziipper pockets. I have gone thru all my scraps trying to make this thing and have a pile of junk. I just found this site and it WILL be bookmarked for future use.

It's a breath of fresh air to have some place to go when you get stuck. I had given up and put my project back into the closet. Something told me to try again this morning. THIS IS ONE GREAT SITE.

I'd like to add if nobody has before: the width of the "rectangle" you stich at the very beginning is the best when it's the width of the zipper "teeth" + 3 extra milimeters. It usually works for me perfectly :)

I'm really new to this site and somewhat new to liberated sewing (not using a pattern).  At first I didn't understand this tutorial but I just kept reading.  Eventually, my questions were answered.  Thanks to all for your patience with one another.  I'm so sorry I just found out about this site.
That's not to say that when I go downstairs and try this I won't run into a snag, but I know I can come ask questions if I need too.

Thanks

This tutorial rocks -- thank you SewPixie!

My question has to do with the size of the pocket.  If I have a seven inch zipper, and I want a seven inch wide by seven inch deep pocket, how big should I make the piece of fabric that gets sewn, cut, and pulled?

Thanks!

Depends on how much seam allowance you want. I usually do 1/4" or 1/2". If you did 1/2" you'd probably want to do the pocket pieces at least 8" x 8" probably more like 8.25" x 8.25" ish just to make up for the little bit taken up by the turning at the opening. You're opening will be a little less than 7" though so you'll have room to sew the pocket pieces together without the zipper in the way.

What you could also do it make really wide seam allowances for the pocket so you would be sure to have enough to hold onto, turn, press flat, etc. Then trim off all the excess. That is what I do sometimes as I just sort of wing it on how big I want the final pocket to be.

Ever think of random crafty problems when trying to get to sleep? I have been looking at bags and trying to figure out a super easy way to have the zipper sandwiched in rather than exposed on the inside. And I dreampt up some easy way to do a zipper pocket that has a zipper opening on two sides...so you could get into it from inside your bag or from outside it, like for times that you don't want to open up the flap of your bag to get an something. Still need to try it and see if it works.

Ohhh -- the double zipper is a great idea and very easy to do!  Each sew-cut-pull piece would just get sewn to the other one!  You'd need to move the bag and lining out of the way, though, but that shouldn't be too hard.

What a great idea.

And thanks for the measurment information -- it helps!

Hi,

I love this tutorial! I don't really sew, but I continue to try.
I want to make a great tote with a lining, pockets and a zipper pocket and after searching on-line for days for a "how to" tutorial I found yours. It's the only one I understand.

One question though that you didn't cover. If I use a 7in. zipper what measurements should I use to make the little rectangle with the line down the center, and arrows at both ends. On my first attempt I made the box too big. No worries, I'm making a proto-type out of muslin first :)
I'm not cutting into my jacquard and lining fabrics until I'm sure I can do it.

Thanks so much for your help.

dmz

I normally make my boxes half an inch high by at most the measurement from just after the zipper stop at the end to just after the zipper teeth end (or shorter if my zipper is longer than the opening I want).

Hope that helps!

AH Ha! Thank you! This time I came closer this time.
I made the inside of my box too short and a wee bit too wide.
I usually have to rip out everything I attempt 3 times before I get it right. Looks like this is no exception. 8)

Once I've got the zipper pinned in place which side do I sew it in on?
The side with pocket or the side that has the bag lining with the zipper front showing?

I tried it with the bag lining up, and sewed inside the stopper.
Sorry, I'm not talented in this field AT ALL!

I'll just rip this out now...

Thanks,
dmz

Post by: dmz on October 24, 2006 10:21:40 AM
Morning,

I ripped out the zipper and made a new bag lining, pocket lining, and pocket back.

I'm having some technical problems though.

The box is still too big, the fabric barely touches the sides of the zipper so I had to sew really close to edge of the fabric. Also to get around the head of the zipper I had to go wider. So my box isn't even.

When I pinned the pocket back to the pocket lining I realized I haven't got room to sew a seam around the zipper head or the other end. Is that normal? What am I doing wrong?

I'm so envious of all of you who have engineering minds and got this straight away. <<heavy sighs>>

Thanks,
dmz

dmz - Let's see if I can help. Your zipper is 7in., is that from tip to tip or is that from zipper stop to the head of the zipperpull when it is closed? For the example I'll assume it is 7in. from tip to tip and guess (since I don't have a zipper with me) that you'd need the zipper opening about 6in.

Your rectangle would be half an inch tall by 6 inches wide. If they are turning out too tall then maybe bump that half inch down a little bit.

The pocket pieces should be at least an inch beyond the edges of your zipper rectangle. As for the stitching around the zipperpull, you can stop twhen you get near the pull (with the needle down), lift the presser foot and un zip the zipper toget the pull out of the way.

Do you have any pictures of your attempts? That might help us help ya. :)

Hi,

Thanks for your help! I have sewn as close to the edge of the fabric box as I could around the zipper stop and zipper head and that gave me just enough seam allowance to close the pocket in those two spots. I had plenty of room everywhere else.

Can you imagine how awful it would have been to have something slip into one of those openings and be rattling around between the lining and bag forever...

It isn't pretty to look at since it's a proto-type on muslin with pink top stitching and black understitching... I'm so happy to have it work! In fact I'm giddy, and keep opening and closing the zipper and checking the pocket. Admiring it. Like a little kid. Silly...

I'm using a 7" zipper from head to stopper. So I'll try the next one with a 6" box. I sized my pocket using the suggestion you gave someone else in an earlier post. 8.25" X 8.25" should I make it
bigger? Like 8.5" X 8.5"?

How do you attach a pic?

Making some progress,
dmz

The size if I recall correctly is the same as the tutorial, I think it is about 6" x 9"

This is a great tutorial! I have used it twice in bags but I'm having trouble getting mine as flat. I mark the rectangle and sew around it and then cut horizontally down the middle with the arrow ends and turn through and iron. But no matter how much I iron I still have little bunches at the corners. What am I doing wrong? I've tried this a couple different ways but I can never get it to smooth out.

Attached are some photos of my pockets. I'm not including zippers but that shouldn't matter, should it? The second one I just focused on the corner is why the rest is so non-ironed in appearance.

Hey Delilah, looks like it could be one of two things - you need to make sure that you're cutting as close to the corner as you can when you cut the arrow heads (without cutting through your stitching). Also, are you making a nice sharp turn when stitching the corners?

I think it's probably the former not the latter but check both - if you've still not fitted the zips you can go back and check your cutting - you're going to sew down those edges again when you add the zip so dont worry about cutting right up to the stitching - there should be no pressure on that part of the stitching once the whole item is finished so no worries about unravelling/fraying.

Thanks in advance.

hey thank you so much for this tute!  I had to read it a few times for it to click (like someone else mentioned), but that is just the way I work.  When it did click, I realized how crazy simple it is!  Note to anyone else trying this for the first time- be sure you cut the rectangle to the final size..not the size of the zipper itself! (this was probably just me not really thinking before acting)

thanks again for the tutorial!

check back about a page or two, delilah was having the same problem (me too) and someone posted suggestions to help it.  most likely (as in my case) you're not cutting the arrowheads close enough to the initial stitching.

This zipper pocket tute was pretty darn idiot proof. Thank god for that.

However, I wanted to add a caution (which could have very well been obvious to others but not me). I discovered today that you need to catch the very top of the facing&back of the zipper pocket in the upper seam of the bag to keep it from slouching and altering the shape of the bag oddly. Hope that makes sense. Ultimately you can stabilize it with some buttons if you missed this. That's what I'm doing right now!

I should probably PM the tute-maker about this because who can wade through 13 pages to get here. I couldn't get myself to read it all to make sure nobody else brought this point up which is why I'm not PMing the fabulous creator of this tute. It's a vicious circle, eh?

kermit6, wouldn't another fix be to make the zipper pocket as deep as the rest of the bag?  Then the wieght of the billfold would be supported by the base of the bag instead of being suspended by the top seam.

yes fidget, i definitely think that is another solution. the pocket shape would be doable in this scenario. given my experiences now tho (18 mths later) it would still be a bit unstable. if the billfold were really fat/wide it would still tug the portion of the pocket above the zipper down. for me the ideal pocket would be caught in the upper seam and go to the base of the bag. optimum stability!
