Title: A Bite to Eat!
Post by: hercuteness on August 02, 2006 09:04:19 PM
Lots of people forget that cooking is a craft, nay an ART, as much as any other on Craftster.  My husband and I decided to do this challenge together since we are total foodies and enjoy spending time together in the kitchen.

This project was inspired by an article in Martha Stewart Living that appeared some time ago.

I give you, miniature fast-food.

i know it's hard to tell from this shot, so I'll give you something for scale. . . .

our burger was a little over one inch tall and about an inch wide.

Here, we have the "money shot" of our burger with its many teeny layers

After we took all the pictures we cut the tiny burger in half and each ate half.  It tasted awesome.

Our official entry is the burger, though the burger and fries together are still less than two inches.
Here are some shots of the preparation of our mini-meal.  Everything was handmade, including the tiny buns.

I used a Splenda packet for scale, since it was two inches long.  Check out the mini pickles, onions and tomato!

Frozen ground beef, cut with a jigger.

It only took a few seconds to cook.

Testing the tiny french fries.

Two batches later. . .

So. . .very. . .small.

I made the soda and tray out of polymer clay and my husband designed and printed the label and tray liner out of Craftster content

We had so much fun making this together.  It was seriously challenging, right down to the sesame seeds.

So, from the two of us, we hope you enjoy our delicious entry. . . .I know we did!

 ;D

I am so speechless at the sheer coolness of this entry.... and it's edible to boot!  :o

I thought this was so freaking cool I had to go wake my husband up out of a sound sleep (it's nearly 1 AM here) to show him this. All he could say was "Sweet Jesus you'd need 100 of those to make a meal!" Which brings images of a bowl full of bite-sized burgers at a party. Lot of work but could be fun!

Anyway, the point is: Best. Entry. Ever. Get down with your bad self!  :D

That is SO cool. I love oddly-sized food so much. Have you considered making GIANT food items? (http://www.ivorysky.com/creme-egg/index.php style)

You've taken "super size" to a whole new level.

 :D

you know, last night my husband asked me what the NEXT challenge was going to be.  we looked at each other and said "One GIANT thing?!"

thanks so much everybody.  it really wasn't tedious work after all.  we started with one thing for scale, that was the burger.  i made a big batch of buns and we picked out the best looking one and went from there.  we tailored everything else around that, so it was fairly easy.  fortunately, most stores carry grape tomatoes and baby onions and tiny dill pickles.  our world is surprisingly mini-friendly.

i thought of stuart little the entire time!

This is AMAZING.  How did you get the sesame seeds so tiny?  Everything is scaled so perfectly!!!!  I am totally voting for this and hitting the "THIS ROCKS" button.  Thanks for showing off your amazing skills!

Title: Re: A Bite to Eat!
Post by: hercuteness on August 03, 2006 06:45:43 AM
yes, we ate the burger and fries IMMEDIATELY after all the pictures were taken.  wonderful.

looking back, i wish i had made an actual cup with soda and ice cubes.

also, it was the first time i made any bread from scratch.  i got the recipe form that huge yellow Gourmet cookbook. . .it was specifically for hamburger and hot dog buns.

the sesame seeds are actual size. . it's really the only thing in that close-up that identifies this burger as tiny.  AND they were a pain to keep straight on the bun, since i put them on AFTER the bread was baked.  i didn't want them to burn!

 ;D

Title: Re: A Bite to Eat!
Post by: Gestalta_Sara on August 03, 2006 06:48:50 AM
i think what i really really like about this (besides the whole thing being really awesome) is the face that the french fries are greasy and you can see that through the paper holder.  I think that defines it as classic to me.

Holy crap.

That's all I could say the whole time I was reading this post, with my jaw hitting the floor.

Amazing.

From one foodie to another, cudos to you girlfriend and hubby!

Quote from my hubby:  "if that was fake, clay or something, it'd just be cool, but by the fact that it's real makes it friggin awesome"

when i get home i'll pull out the recipe and post it. . .we've made mini burgers for parties before, but nothing THIS small. . it would be pretty labor intensive. . .not to mention that in all the times we've tried, the burgers (and fries, we've done mini fries before, too) get cold so quickly. . but most people don't seem to mind.

 ;D

That's very very cool! I especially like the tray liner your husband designed. What a team!! How much bigger are the mini burgers you make for parties compared to what you made for this challenge?

Title: Re: A Bite to Eat!
Post by: hercuteness on August 03, 2006 09:40:11 AM
we have previously used store-bought dinner rolls (with sesame seeds, they were hard to find) to make the burgers and once we had our local Whole Foods bakery make the buns from ciabatta dough. . .both times they ended up about four times the size of this one. . .about two bites' worth of burger.

:o These are so so perfectly adorable!!!

I used to desperately want real food for my dollies when I was little. I used to rip off teeny sections from my cauliflower and put it on my dolls plate cos it looked like a whole size miniature califlower and I once made a design (a very silly hard to make out one given that I was only ickle) for a barbie sweetshop that I felt should come with lots and lots of miniature sweets  ::) hehe

I'm sad that this will eventually have to go off if not get devoured. It's so perfect that it should live forever  :'(

Oooooh!!!! I bet you and your hubby could open a chain of these and make a mint! Of course, people would have to order more than one to get full. With the labor required, burgers, fries, and a drink would be about $50--at least. Wow, you could even help shrink the waistlines of Americans. Minisize me please! Great job! You simply must keep crafting with hubby.

PS I thought it was sweet how you cut the burger in half and shared it when you were done.   ;D

I think they do that to show that they aren't "hotlinked" here.  They are showing that they stored copies of the photos on their servers so that everytime someone looks at their page, they aren't eating up our bandwidth to load a picture on their page.

Some sort of link here might be nice though.  :)

Title: Re: A Bite to Eat!
Post by: hercuteness on November 14, 2006 05:37:38 AM
RCKFELLA - no i didn't grow the vegetables.  it really is ridiculously easy to find tiny food of all kinds.  like i said, i had a big jar of pickles in my fridge. . .i just rooted through the jar until i found the smallest one and then sliced it up super thin.

i had a container of grape tomatoes, too.  so i did the same thing, picked out the smallest one and cut it up. . .from all the slices i picked the ones that went best with the size of the bun.

the only thing we had to buy was the little onion.  but i see them everywhere now, they are about the size of a marble.

when we went to paris, my husband and i saw all sorts of baby veggies in the market.  lettuces, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes.

super expensive, but oh-so-cute.

Natural Starlet - no, it's not real soda. . .it's the only thing i would change if i did this again.  the soda cup is 100% polymer clay.  the straw, too.  i cut the lid using a soda bottle cap so it would have that crinkled edge.

 :D

oh wow. . .i hadn't seen that before!

i think someone mentioned it earlier, but i never went to watch it.

looks like our burgers were very much alike.

no offense to Mr. Cook, but i prefer my burgers with cheese. . .and not dripping with mayo.  and there's something to be said for presentation.

plus, i made my buns from scratch.

i'm just saying.

yup. . .in fact, i don't think i even had to cut it. . .i folded a regular old slice of american cheese into four quarters and used one of them on the burger.

So, I was jonesing for a some trashy magazine to get my fill of celebrity gossip and came across the ever informative OK! Magazine.  While I flipped through pages amazed at how a certain celeb couple spent nearly $3 million on their wedding I came to a section of fun/crazy pictures.  I was intrigued when I saw a picture of a tiny hamburger meal!!!...totally impressed the picture I examined it closer and although it seemed crazy i thought I could make out craftster on the cup!!!  Then I saw the little cork man that i assume all us craftsters have come to love and yelled....Oh my gosh!!! Craftster is in my magazine!!!!

Of course no one else i was with seemed to be excited about this, but I am come to accept that when it comes to my obsession with this website.

Anyway, Congrats on getting into OK! and I love the burger!!! And everyone should go check it out!!!

...Ok, so they probably didnt, but im obsessive over people's awesomeness getting ripped off.

well, what can you do. . .it's not like someone couldn't have come up with the idea all on their own.

i think it's pretty cool, in a way.  in a horrible, marketing-sucks-the-life-out-of-everything kind of way.

 ;)

Title: Re: A Bite to Eat!
Post by: iampoison on December 31, 2006 11:36:24 AM
I'm here in the US and I have also seen this Wendy's ad. I also thought they ripped you off. I just checked youtube to see if it was there but I can't seem to find it.

But the basic commercial is two men sitting next to eachother. One with a normal sized burger, fries, and soda. The other man has a mini version very similar to your mini meal. The man with the mini meal turns and says "This was only 2.99" while the man with the normal sized meals says "This was 2.99 also".

That's basicly it. Just like MADness323 said the mini meal is almost an exact copy except the soda and fry containers were different colors.

Did you see the latest WENDY'S commercial ???

It uses A MINI BURGER, FRIES AND DRINK just like yours!

I can't find the commercial online, but basically one guy is eating a mini burger, fries and drink and says to the guy beside him eating a regular Wendy's combo, "All of this was $2.99".  The guy beside him goes, "All of this was $2.99 too." or something.

Veeeeerrrry iiinteresting.

i saw an interesting thing on PBS about people in advertising. . . .this analyst basically said that the influx of super clever and arty commercials and print ads that we have seen in the last two decades has risen out of the fact that most people involved in advertising don't really WANT to be in advertising, they secretly (or not so secretly) despise their line of work. . . and making those types of commercials is part of their desire to do something art-worthy in even the most remote way.

i suppose this might be one more aspect of that.  capitalizing on what consumers  like in the art/craft world while trying to legitimize themselves as artists.

i don't know, just a thought.

I saw a special about advertising like that a looonnnggg time ago...maybe it's the same one?  They call all the buyers (mostly 13 to 24 year olds) mooks (sp?) and bare midriffs.  I KNOW they are cruising the internet and doing that.  I think one has to just take it as the sincerest form of flattery.  They can't take your talent away.  You're truly an amazing photographer!!!  They just don't look the same in their commercial.

I am SO glad I'm not the only person who saw that commercial and was like, wait a minute, WTF!  It made me angry at first but I guess you could be right kikigirl in that it is a form of flattery except the original artist doesn't get the mega check the ad agency does.  And you're 100% correct that it doesn't look nearly as appetizing on the commercial as it does in this post!!  ;D

recently i did ANOTHER miniature fast food meal for a photo contest on another site and i thought it was only fair to share it with you.

it doesn't have the same impact that the burger does, i know, but i made it from cornish game hens and i baked the mini biscuits myself.

thanks for looking everyone!
