Title: Cute As Anything Drawstring Backpack
Post by: Thrifty-One on July 25, 2006 06:10:15 AM
I so loved this bag by EmilyinOrbit https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=103725.0
that I was inspired to make my own, but wanted to give it a personal touch.

Also I've been trying so hard to be good and only use what's in my stash, so this is what I came up with:

I straight line quilted all over the outside. The bag has cotton batting as an interlining. The construction took a bit of fiddling around with to be sure the batting didn't interfere with the drawstring closure.

Here's an interior shot:

It has a big interior patch pocket.

So, what do you guys think? Especially thoughts on the fabric combo would be great. I love feedback! Thanks in advance!

I love this bag!
The colors are super and it has a great "american folkart" feel.
Very bright and carefree looking.
Love it!!

You did a great job!!!

I love drawstring backpacks! I need to make one for myself.. I especially love yours, the fabric combo is great! It's just too cute  ;)

How did you attach the strings to the bottom of the bag? I've seen bags like this from Nike and stuf and the just have cords for the straps, around the top and then there is an eyelet (?) that it goes through in the bottom. But how did you do yours?

Ahhh... this took a bit of working out. I wanted the straps to join into the side seam without the 'flap with eyelet' business.

Basically, I finished the whole bag, except the side seams, the drawstring was threaded through, everything finished. Then it's all in how you pin it together. Make sure the drawstrings are equal length, then pin one drawstring end to each side of each face of the bag, totalling four points where there are pins (does that make sense?).

Then you finish the bag as normal, taking care to put several strengthening stitches where the straps join the side seams. When you turn the bag right side out, the straps should be joined in at the seam.

Let me know if you need any of that explained further. It's complicated to explain, but easy to do.

Ooh...i am so inspired! And embarrassed about my "simple drawstring pack" post. Okay, so it was my first post, but geez...yours gives me something to aspire to somewhere waaay down the line. For the next ones I might add either fleece or batting. Do you have suggestions as to which might be better?

Thanks for the inspiration!

I haven't tried fleece, that would probably work well. You just need something that's thick enough to quilt, but thin enough that it'll bunch up when you close the bag.

Thanks for the compliments!
