December 12th was officially declared Poinsettia Day by an Act of Congress. It honors Joel Roberts Poinsett, who was the first US Ambassador to Mexico. Poinsett brought this colorful plant back to his plantation in Greenville, SC. where he grew them them as gifts for friends and family, before his death on December 12, 1851. According to Mexican folklore, there was a poor little girl who had nothing to bring to church for Christmas. On her way there, she picked some plants she found by the side of the road. As she entered the church, the leaves at the tips of the branches turned into bright, brilliant red flowers. However they came to be, you’d be hard pressed to find a more cheerful symbol of the holiday season.
