Welcome to the Cutting (& Stitching) Edge! I’m Mr X Stitch and I’ll be your guide to the best in contemporary embroidery. Each week I’ll showcase someone who is rocking the world of embroidery and textiles.

I thought I’d use the Cutting (& Stitching) Edge slot this week to showcase a few videos that have been produced by our friends at etsy.

First up a poignant film entitled Lancashire Textiles: Last Mill Standing. It features one of the few remaining textile mills in North England and reminds us how fragile the industry has become in the face of globalisation. It is a sad tale, and I hope that things change so that these factories are not lost forever.

On a very similar vein, their latest video features the Cypriot lace-making women in the village of Lefkara, who have been embroidering lace since the 15th century. Now this regional handicraft, recently nominated to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Element collection, is dying out — replaced by machine-made replicas imported from abroad to meet the demand of tourists.

And finally, let’s spend a few minutes in the word of Jimmy McBride, whose interstellar quilts never fail to amaze…

(Yes I know we’ve shown it before, but it’s a mighty fine video!)

I love the videos etsy are producing. Stylish, well made, always inspiring. You could do worse than to watch all of them!
