Craft Challenge #1 Winner

The voting period for the first Craft Challenge has ended! The challenge was to make something totally unexpected from items costing under $5 from a dollar store.

There were 35 brilliant entries in all. You can see them all here:

The winner won by just ONE vote. So make sure you also check out the runner up’s project which was the amazing 1950s prom dress made out of a tablecloth, a shower curtain liner, and plastic twine:

Now on to the winner! Miss Dollar Store America has been crowned! (Shall we crown you with the Hardware Tiara entry?! hee hee…)

I’m floored by swalsh’s ingenuity with this project. Her dollar store purchase was a few large rectangular picture frames and a bag of plastic army men. (And some non-dollar-store nails and glue thrown in.)

The finished product… A kick ass table with dozens of army men holding up the glass table top!

For winning, swalsh gets the overwhelming admiration of the Craftster community AND these cute one inch Craftster buttons made by yours truly. (Buttons normally only available to Craftser fans who I meet on the mean streets of Boston!)

I am so bummed out that I forgot to finish my project for the Challenge. But Man that Table is so cool.

There were so many great projects! I am proud of everyone’s creativity. I can’t wait for the next challenge!

  5. Jen says:

Just wanted to say everyone’s creativity and final projects really blew me away! Great idea for a contest.

  6. maribelle says:

Fabulous first challenge! I agree with the previous poster that the piece is very derivitive of Do-Ho Suh’s artwork ( and the crafter should have given him credit. That said, I still really like it.

  7. Leah says:

For what it’s worth, we’ve been through this before on the forum and the person who made the table is a computer programmer — not an art expert — and had never heard of Do Ho Suh or seen his work before.

  8. happygothgirl says:

Wow. Close contest. Congratulations to swalsh and all the other contestants. ^^ (Though the engineer in me still wonders how that table’s gonna hold in an earthquake… o.o )

  9. La_Exotique says:

I love all these creations — it’s made me want to dash to the dollar general, thanks to all the competators — you were all excellent i loved them all because they were all excellent ideas <33

  10. Cindy says:

I don’t understand how the cube was fashioned out of four frames. I’ve tried, and there’s no way to make four sides AND a top with the four frames pictured. Prove me wrong, but if you had to buy 5 frames, which it looks like you do, wouldn’t the army men put you over $5?

  11. Cindy says:

Nevermind. Ignore the above comment. Someone showed me how she did it! Thanks.

  12. Aron says:

a table worthy of George W…. it is pretty cool… congrats.

  13. vulgarcouture says:

    that’s a BLATANT re-appropriation of Do-Hu Suh’s work.

  14. marisa says:

why is it so hard to believe that different people can come up with similar ideas – that it doesn’t mean one person is ripping another off?

MAYBE it’s been mentioned before, but the whole dollar store challenge could be a craft book in and of itself!!! has anyone thought of that yet???!!!

  17. dialneank says:

    mm.. nice 🙂

  18. Tania says:

I love this table!! Could someone send me the instructions? I’d love to have something like this for my apartment!
