I seen this on a show on tv.  The lady put glue on the underside of the umbrella, stuck it through the shell of the lampshade and cut most of the the "pokey" things off on the inside.  She used a regular inexpensive lampshade and used it on a lamp instead.

jjm: do you happen to know what kind of glue they used on television when you saw this? I tried white glue and hot glue; white didn't cut it on the thin paper, and hot glue just burned holes through it.
