I'm a minimalist and a weaver so I didn't use any extra materials except a little paint.  This is what I used and what I came up with.
I wove pipecleaners together and strung in some plastic lacing to enhance the pattern.  I painted small pasta pieces light pink for the ends.  The great thing about using pipeclears for this is that with the metal core you can bend it into all sorts of shapes for holding things.
Here are the pictures of my kitschy craft.

potholder or hotplate whatever you call it

Now as a candy dish

I like it.  I love anything that trasforms.  I could really use a few of these in my new kitchen.

I've got knitting needles, and I'm not afraid to use them.

I love the colors and the design.
And the fact that it transforms.
And the minimalism.
And the usefulness.
Who am I kidding? I love everything about it!

LOOKING FOR A PERSONAL SWAP: I'm hoping for dinosaur-themed Xmas crackers, or other dinosaur Xmas items. I can make a Jayne Cobb hat, or many other things!
