"Man's Ruin" shrine in a baking tin
«

June 01, 2006 06:34:13 PM »
Hi all, this is my first challenge, and I had a lot of fun!! This shrine was inspired by the old style “Man’s Ruin” tattoos. They pretty much always have a sexy girl sitting in a martini glass in the middle and other symbols on the outside like a skull, booze bottles, dice, poker cards, stuff like that. I also tried to work in other tattoo theme images throughout the piece. I should have taken pictures when I was making it I made a HUGE mess all over the place making this thing. It took me 2 days to clean up!
Click here for a larger view
I was super excited when I realized that doll would fit nicely in a martini glass. That’s where the original idea came from – then I read about the challenge with the macaroni and such and it all came together in my head right then. A lot of the little doo dads are just random things I’ve hung onto. I tore my place up trying to find all this stuff!
The doll is in a martini glass full of glass pebbles & silicone glue. In there with her are a winning poker hand of tiny cards, a black cat, and an 8 ball. She has 6 arms and is holding beer, wine and a tiny roulette game. Her pasties are skulls and crossbones.
The outer part of the shrine is a baking pan that I got on sale for a dollar. Inside that, secured with gobs of silicone glue, is a cardboard lid from a copier paper box I painted black. The backdrop in there features a border of gold pasta with gold pipecleaners along the edge, pom poms, fake roses with skulls glued in ‘em, and a bunch of doll hands holding a skull, a devil, a heart, dice (rolling 7), and in the center, a winged hand holds a revolver (I had recently found a baggie of random doll arms at the thrift store by my house) Behind the doll is an oval mirror I found in the target dollar section a couple weeks back. Tucked on either side is play money.
The top of the shrine is made of popsicle sticks painted green, topped with wood rectangles I painted red & stuck tiny playing cards on (those were another target dollar ailse find!) Aslo up there is part of a busted roulette toy I had laying around, Barbie shoes from the aforementioned thrift shop, dice rolling a 7, and a hand in the middle holding a plastic skull charm and an american express card that says “Your Name Here” that I got in an ad they sent me some time ago. I always wanted to use that in something.
I forgot to take a "before" picture, but here's a pic some of the leftover supplies - better late than never, right?

A+. That is eerily attractive.
VERY kitschy... I can just imagine it alongside a velvet/ blacklight portrait of The King.

Hee Hee! I love it!
I've been meaning to ask, are the doll's pasties cell phone bling decals?

Thanks for the kind words, guys! Nope, those pasties are actually metal charms affixed with pins - so technically I guess they are actually piercings.
The teeny skulls are from Oriental trading - they are little plastic beads. The devil head is from sacred kitch. I was glad to find a use for that - I had it in my bead box for a while, but before this challenge came along I had no idea what to use it in!!
Hey Stifflersmom - is the shrine-along a craftster swap? That's right up my alley!

This is a great little shrine! You definitely need to come see what everyone's up to in the shrine-a-long!
