Helo there!
For my art class at school, the culminating task this semester is to make a chess set.  Not an entire chess set, actually, but one of each of the pieces.  1 Pawn, 1 Rook, 1 Knight, 1 Bishop, 1 Queen, and of course 1 King.  I thought that it would be interesting if I used Garden gnomes for my chess set and did custom paint and fabric additions onto them.  BUT the problem is that I do not know where I can get some unpainted gnomes, I was thinking maybe Micheal`s?  Maybe? Here is the style of gnome that I am looking for (get a load of the price!!!)http://www.kimmelgnomes.com/
PLEASE if anyone has any suggestions (I already checked ebay) then please do not hesitate to post them!
Peace and Love!

exactly what size of gnomes are you interested in? if you want little tiny ones, maybe a dollar store might have some? or a home-depot type store? i have no idea where you would find a bunch of relatively inexpensive gnomes, but your idea is awesome!

have you entertained the thought of creating your own out of fimo or clay? They would be less expensive and you could make it the right size, etc. I love gnomes! There is a great book called, Gnomes that I checked out from the library and it looked like David the Gnome was based off of it. It would be good research material.

If you want to make the gnomes for your chess pieces from polymer clay, here are a few pages that should help:

http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/kids_beginners.htm
(...click on Games, then scroll down few screenfuls to Chess & Checkers...)

http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/heads_masks.htm
(esp. the subcategory on Older Faces...)

Gnomes are fairly similar to some elves, trolls, ogres, leprechauns, and just older figures, etc., though, so these might be of interest too:

http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/Halloween_etc.htm
(...click on St. Patrick's Day for elves, etc.)

http://www.sculpey.com/Projects/projects_WoodenEggSanta.htm
http://www.pcpolyzine.com/may2001/troll.html
M.Reids hobbies gnomes (these are kinda thin, though!)
http://members.aol.com/polyopoly/gnomes.htm
Kevin's heavily sculpted faces of elves, gnomes, and other creatures:

Have fun!
