Hey Leah, thanks for your comment.
I did this picture so long ago I hardly remember the techniques I used, lol. Well, to get soft smudges, before I even start the picture, I use graphite (you could use pencil too) to make some smudges on the paper. This just gets a good medium to work with. I'm pretty sure that around the nose I just made some pencil marks (yes, this whole thing was doen in pencil) and smudged them with my finger. I don't think I used a rubbing stick. I usually only use one for small areas. The smudges around the nose aren't that big, that's because when I was near the end of the picture, I used an eraser on the  cheeks to highlight them. Some of the smudging went away after I used the eraser.

Okay, I hope that wasn't too long or confusing.
