Hi all,

I discovered by accident the EASIEST way to make a funky, functional purse with minimal measuring, pinning and stitching.... and it looks fabulous too. Here are instructions and photos:

1. Cut out two rectangular-sized pieces of fabric - one outer and one lining. I interfaced the outer for a bit of structure (but you don't have to).

2. Place the two pieces right side together, and stitch down one of the short sides.

3. Now fold them back so that they are right side out again. You may want to give it a bit of an iron here so that it sits nice and flat.

4. Now this part may be a little hard to describe, so bear with me. Lay the fabric with the open part towards you - that is, the side you stitched in step 2 is facing away from you. Take one of the pieces of fabric (you'll do this on both sides so it doesn't matter which side you start with) and fold it back up so that you've covered about 1/3 of the height of the rectangle. You can see my hand here in the picture measuring this distance.

5. Turn it over and do the same on the other side (this is a bit like origami, isn't it!). Give it another iron.

6. Now stitch up the two vertical sides, leaving the very top seam undone.

(Just showing the top seam undone here:)

7. Turn the purse inside-out through your undone top seam:

It's starting to take shape now!

8. Add a funky button.....

9. ....and some hat elastic (I thread it in and underneath the button that I've just hand-sewn on, for extra strength)...

10. Then fold the seam in on itself and either hand- or machine-stitch it shut.

11. Voila! The finished product:

12. And of course the inside....

LOVE LOVE LOVE this.  I am definitely going to try this.  I was in the process of making a wallet - and realized I bought the wrong color fabric.  I think I'll use that fabric to try this!!!
