I was told that you don't want to sharpen the needles and pins they make now, because it will actually hurt it. The old needles and pins needed it, but the way they are made today, with the newer materials and such it actually does more harm than good.

I have no idea if this is right or not, it's just what the woman at the quilt shop I go to said, and it sort of made sense.

HA HA--the cupcake looks good no matter which way!!

I also heard that the new materials do not need "sharpening".  The emery sand was used because old pins used to rust.  They are made of stainless steel now. I broke open the little strawberry on one of my newer tomato pincushions and it was filled with sawdust!

I used cotton and polyester stuffing in mine and microbeads to give it weight (oops--can't say much more until my partner receives!)

Of course I had it upside down...I meant to do that!
Seriously, it looks great either way but now that you mention it, the sprinkles wouldn't be on the cake part.
I'm using it both ways!

That's cool...at least I finished the bottom...I enjoyed using up the odds and ends of things that I have...I saw the brass things at dollar general for 50 cents and thought they would be neat with a cushion in the middle of them...and then thought it would be nice to have the magnet for holding needles because I always seem to loose mine in my pincushions.except for the brass holder, I used up materials I had for the brass pincushion...so no extra cost!  I think I may make one for my friend who has just started sewing...

I was not too impressed with the pincushions, so I am glad that I have gotten such positive feedback...I LOVE the ones ilovepaper sent me!!

you know...the only thing I bought for this swap WAS the brass thing...I don't know what else you could use it for...it just whispered make me into a pincushion to me...

I received from my partner today. Watch out everyone it is so beautiful and amazing so please remember that I didn't choose her to be my partner because I knew it would be spectacular, I chose her because I wanted to felt the pincushion I made! Without further ado, lots of pictures. I have to take pictures outside because the lighting in my apartment is bad--which hopefully will change when I move next weekend. So in the background is my dirty "patio" and notice the fact that I put down a scrap of fabric so that my pincushion would not get dirty.
The front view, isn't she cute!

The back view...watch the obi!             It unsnaps to reveal a place for needles!

I didn't give alwaysinmyroom any limitation on what I wanted, so she came up with this all on her own. The one thing that I did ask for was a place to put needles.
alwaysinmyroom said she made it with kimono scraps...I am sure she can tell you more.

Thank you so much I truly love her! I think there was something else I was going to say, but I forgot

Wow, oh wow, alwaysinmyroom! That is a work of art. I love it so much, especially the stark face with the glowing cheeks. That is very well made, and I totally admire all of the work and care that must have gone into it!

alwaysinmyroom, that pincushion is beautiful.   Shocked  Once again, I gasped as it scrolled into view.  Such an original and creative design, and so well executed.  Just beautiful!!

The creativity in this group never ceases to amaze, astound and delight.   Smiley
