Is it possible to knit a word or text? I would like to knit a basic scarf with some text on it - how would I go about that? Would I use excel to create a pattern?

I hope this question makes sense! Thanks.

You could use excel, or you could just type the word out in 48 pt font or so, then interpose a graph over it. There are also already graphed letters and words on the net, you might want to check those out. As for the knitting part of it, letters are done in either fair isle or intarsia, depending on the size.

Hope that helps!

Here's a link to some alphabets - they're cross stitch but they translate

http://crochet.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=crochet&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freepatternsonline.com%2Fxspatterns.htm

Scroll down past the info on the page to see, "View the free cross stitch patterns"

there are some really neat ones there so check em all out.

There's also a lovely web application called KnitPro You can use a font of your own and save it as an image and just upload it onto there. I absolutely love this and use it quite often when I need a quick chart.
