One of the "new but retro-inspired" projects in my new book was contributed by Craftster member somavenus. If you search for "book clutch" here on Craftster you can find lots of variations on this idea. Anyway, somavenus came up with totally clear instructions and diagrams for my book. (Thanks somavenus!  Kiss) It's a really fun project and a total attention grabber.

Here's a variation that I recently made. I don't know what attracted me to that particular hardcover book. But I love the juxtaposition of it with the happy homemaker fabric. Smiley

Ohmigosh! It's so cool! I especially love that it still looks book-like---as though one is always carrying a book around rather than a purse. love the pairing of the fabric, ribbon, jewel and cover.

it's still hard for me to maul books, though, no matter how cool the project or old and useless the book. . . sigh.

I love purses from books. If someone doesn't get me your book for Christmas, I'm going to have to get it for myself. I need good directions for making these.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Okay, this project has convinced me that I must buy the book. Now, all I need to do is to hit the thrift stores for a book to rip the guts out of!  Wink

Has anybody seen these purses:

When I first saw it, I thought hey, that reminds me of Leah's book clutch, but much more expensive. I don't mean to hijack the thread, I just thought it was neat  Smiley

When I worked retail an old lady came in with a purse like that. When I complimented her on it she brought in the other ones she made that she just happened to have in her car. She was one of the coolest old ladies I've ever met. She explained how to make them and everything. Such an awesome idea.

i've been wanting to do these. i saw them on an episode of carol duvall. not sure, but it was awhile ago. [i love her show].

i got some old reader's digest books, the ones with the flowers and print all over them. and took them apart, and that's all the farther i got. that was almost a year ago.

this kinda inspires me to finish them at some point in my life.
