the yarn store is called Purl and its on 137 Sullivan Street, New York NY. i don't know anything about knitting but i've been there a few times with my friend and it's absolutely adorable. Great, great selection and staff.

It's sister store is called Purl Patchwork and it's located down the block at 147 Sullivan. It's teensy and adorable and a great place to drop by if you want some fabric but feel overwhelmed by the Garment/Fashion District, as i often do. It's mostly for quilters though, so there's no tweed or houndstooth, etc.

their website is http://www.purlsoho.com

happy shopping!

I love them both. I'm going to post some PJ's I made my mom with Purl Patchwork fabric tomorrow in the completed objects section (once i get them, well, completed!) if you'd like to see the sort of stuff they have.

The people at both branches of the store are friendly and helpful. I also believe that both stores have classes - Purl Patchwork has both quilting classes and learn to sew classes. I plan to take their hand stitches class b/c I'd love to be able to use some cool handsewn techniques along side my machine sewing.

FYI Purl's owners are the people behind the book "Last Minute Knitted Gifts." Went there yesterday.  Pretty cool place.  Also bought some fabric from the fabric store to line a knitted bag.  Helpful staff.
