My daughter (whose 2) picked out a "tangelo" color varigated for this, but I have been struggling with the lace pattern.

I found that couting while I stitch helps. So for the back I would do the first three and then start counting each completed stitch or yo so I ended up counting to 70. This doesn't work for the bind offs though you have to count each loop that you use. I also have to dedicate myself to a whole lace and purl row when I sit to work on it otherwise I get lost.
