Grin I hope this post works! This is my first post as a crafter although I am a long time lurker  Smiley

Soooo... after weeks of planning, drawing out plans, making a cheesy little cardboard model, and scouting around for building materials, etc. my boyfriend and I finally did it! In fact, tonight we finally placed the grand finale, Racer's bamboo pagoda/hut on top of this monstrosity we came up with!  Grin It's a bit larger than we imagined it would turn out to be, but I love it!! We made the "trunk" with four 1x6 planks of wood, formed his tunnel, cradle, and part of his hut with concrete tubes (made out of cardboard, not concrete!), fashioned the platforms so that they actually penetrate into the trunk and can be removed if necessary, and spent hours hotgluing and stapling the carpet, sisal rope and bamboo to embellish! I still have work to do, such as decorating the trunk with perhaps cut-out paw prints in a contrasting carpet and attaching some fun toys, but I just had to show off my boyfriend's (and partly my) hard work  Cheesy

aerial view of the entire structure, you can see the roof is barely inches from the ceiling!

racer playing on his new playground

just a close-up  Tongue

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions on how I should spruce up this cat tree. Thanks for looking!!

Grin He is still loving his palace! I'm so glad that he still appreciates it, it's his own hideout when he doesn't want to be disturbed Smiley

That is amazing!  I've been thinking for a long time of doing the same thing. Any hints before setting out? Thanks.

Well, here are a few hints I can come up with offhand before setting out~~

1. If you call up your local carpet dealers, they may sell you a cut of their leftover carpet scraps for cheap. Some places will sell them cheaper, so call a few to compare. One carpet dealer was kind enough to tell me that you can actually go to dumpsters and salvage a lot of still good quality carpet (just that new homeowners prefer to put in their own when they move in). Unfortunately I was too impatient to wait around for the darn rain to stop before dumpster hunting Roll Eyes

2. The same day I bought a piece of scrap carpet, I found that the business next door had thrown out quite a few large pieces of wood (I think they were a sign making business) so I grabbed those and was able to make the platforms and base out of them. If you drive by businesses especially on Saturday morning before the garbage trucks arrive, you can find scrap wood.

3. We bought a circular saw, jigsaw, drill, electric stapler (very useful with this project), screws, liquid nails all-purpose construction adhesive, a concrete tube (I think ours was 12"), utility knife to cut the carpet (be sure to get the platinum blades for this purpose, they last longer because carpet is pretty rough to cut), and various wood pieces to build the trunk and hut at the top of the tower. Hot glue gun is always helpful with gluing on the decorations (in our case, the bamboo mats that I bought at a dollar store)

4. This project took a bit longer than I had anticipated, but that was mostly because we didn't fully organize everything before setting out to the hardware store and/or we came up with different ideas to put things together. Planning is key Wink

5. If I had to do this all over again, I think I would have bought more sisal rope to wrap around more of the trunk. Racer loves to scratch on it, but I think it would have been possible for him to actually climb up if it was fully wrapped in sisal. Be sure to wrap it very tightly!

I hope these hints help! They are very basic, but you should check out the links I posted above. They have some amazing ideas and it is so much fun to mix and match to your own taste!!

wow, you did an amazing job with that!  hopefully it cost less than buying a storebought one, but just the satisfaction of making something for your baby is worth it if it cost more.  and it is totally unique and much bigger than any you can find!

i love it!

Wow! That is amazing! I feel so stupid for buying one! Yours is even better than the one I bought. I'm sure your kitty is going to love that tree for years! I honestly can't think of any way you could improve it.

lucky kitty! that looks awesome [and way fun to play on]

i've been thinking about making a cat tree for ages. my cats are seriously understimulated and i'd love to have something for them to romp on, but cat trees are SO expensive. seriously, some of the ones i've seen that aren't nearly as nice as yours cost more than a couch!

and considering that i don't even have a couch yet...

I think I might make it my goal to build a cat tree this summer. Not a huge one like this (although she would LOVE it!) so we can still transport it when we move out of this apartment. Or maybe make a big one that "interlocks" in places so that we can take it apart if need be. Hmmm... my brain is already racing with ideas!

Thanks everyone for your great responses! Racer just loves his tree, especially the hut at the very top  Cheesy Actually, my boyfriend also thought of "interlocking" pieces. He made sure to cut out holes in the tree trunk so that the platforms could slide into the trunk securely. The hardest part was carpeting the platforms after making these puzzle-like pieces! I would love to see your version after you finish it!

Smiley Thanks y'all! I think now that my boyfriend and I know where to look for the materials and how to plan things out, we could definitely make more! I had so many ideas on it that it drove my boyfriend crazy because we couldn't go forward until I decided which ones to implement Wink I have seen many great cat condos for cheap on ebay, I don't know how the sellers recoup the costs of building. Plus, the shipping would be horrendous with the solid wood my boyfriend and I used for a lot of the cat tree. My friend wants me to make a tree for her miniature pinscher now, lol.

Congrats on an awesome cat tree! My boyfriend and I have been contemplating making one, too, but we've been a little slow in getting motivated.  Of course, in addition to our kitty, Molly, today we began fostering 2 shelter kitties, so suddenly the idea of making a cat tree is becoming more worthwhile.

Thanks for the post!

It makes me miss having a cat.
I'm going to go to the pound and adopt a cat just so I have a reason to build one of these.... now... just to teach the dogs that cats are not squeeky toys....

Something like that would sell for about $500 from a retailer. Do you think you could do some sort of tutorial for this? I've been dying to make a cat tree, and now that I've seen yours, the one I had in mind just wouldn't compare.

Grin Thanks! What we did was cover the tube with two pieces of carpet, one on each end of the tube. We cut the pieces so that we could carpet one half of the tube first, used lots of construction adhesive and let it dry overnight before placing the other piece of carpet. When drying the pieces overnight, we slid another tube inside to create tension and allow the carpet to adhere more smoothly. Does that make sense?

Grin thank you! the pagoda was the most time consuming and well worth the effort, as racer doesn't stop at any of the lower levels, he just keeps climbing to the very top where he can survey his kingdom  Wink
