can i just say that using the short row technique as in the tech guy socks (magknits) looks lovely but purling 3 through back loops is a bloody nightmare.

still, i've completely finsihed baby sock #1, it looks lovely, i'll take a pic and post in a bit Smiley

Ok, so I am still stuck on my first sock, at the heel.  I am making up my pattern as I go along, which is probably my first mistake, I know, but it was turning out quite well until now.  I want to do a short row heel.  I have tried this probably 5 times and forgged it everytime.  Does anyone know of any good websites that give you exact step by step instructions?  I have come across some great tutorials, but for some reason I just can't wrap my head around this.  Guess I need to take a break and come back to it later.   Huh

This is the best tutorial I've found so far. It's what finally made things click for me.

Also, there's a short row instructional video at the bottom of this page:

Yay, I'm currently about halfway through my first heel flap! The photographic evidence can be found in my blog, linked in my signature below.

I just cast on and finished my first row.  Horray!  Feels like quite an accomplishment!  Specially that first joining stitch.  I'm using this sock class   http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Beginning.htm
plus knittinghelp.com and the sock demo meriellyn mentioned.
I made my own dpn's from  knittinghelp demo.  I paid  $.83 for the dowel and maybe .60 for the sandpaper, so much cheaper than buying dpn's!

It's a sock!!

Kinda like sock knitting prom night... far from perfect and a bit awkward but counts anyway. Wink lol
(And it took me a glass of wine to get up the nerve to finish it.)

Hehe, my grafting skillz leave much to be desired. I had to go back over it to stitch up a mysterious little hole afterward so it's a little lumpy. At least it's just supposed to be a house sock. Smiley
It's practice for when my nifty sock yarn gets here. I can see this being addictive. I love that I'm the only person I know (in person) who's ever knit a sock! I feel special. It looks pretty impressive, I think (even though it's a lot easier than I expected).
I think my boyfriend's roomie thinks I'm nuts with my yarny goodness popping up all over the house. Ah well, he already thinks I'm nuts anyway. Wink

here's a pic of my finished mini tech guy socks:

and i've put all the pattern adaptation notes on my blog.

i'd like to do some of the summery toeless socks from spun, i'm starting a new KAL topic just for them if anyone wants to try their next pair of socks Wink
