Just finished this... the pattern is from interweave crochet mag. spring 2006. It was super fun to make. And fits nice. I just have to make some buttons.

The color kind of reminds me of a cappuccino with foamed milk (^_^)

I have to say, I really didn't like this that much when I saw it in the magazine, but yours looks really good!  Maybe it's the choice of colors.

Your version makes me want to give this pattern a try, myself.

there is a picture  on my blog of the back before the shrug was finished. as far as the yarn... um... I used caron simply soft.. the reason being.. i wasn't sure how it would turn out and didn't want to buy expensive yarn. since it turned out very nice i would definately go for a better quality yarn for the next one. a cotton yarn or microfiber would probably have more drape. (^_^)

I used 2 skeins of the main color and 1 skein of the white. microspun is a sport weight yarn i think.. it might be a little light. i just orders some of this...http://knitpicks.com/yarns/itemid_5420140/yarn_display.aspx
it's cotton and microfiber.. its very soft. i think it would work well also. I'm starting a different shrug today with it.
