Hi, This is only my second post and my first with pictures, so I hope they show up!
I started with this black velvet landscape painting.
http://homepage.mac.com/kateycrews/.Pictures/green%20tree%20paiting-web.jpg

I decided to use the painting like a fabric and turned it into a tote bag.

I am very happy with the results.
I hope you like it!

truely beautiful! You did a wonderful job on it! And what a way to show off an olde cliche. Most velvet paintings are hiding in someone's attic or basement!

HOLY SCHLAMOLEY!  I love it.  I never would have thought it'd actually work.  I never would have thought of it in the first place.  Now I'm desperate to have one.  I have to keep correcting myself as I type, because my fingers are stammering!  What a great conversation piece--when people ask about it (which they will), they'll be so glad they did.

That is REALLY cool!

I tried a canvas (painted) that I "removed" from the stretcher and tried to make it into a bag,
but the gesso gave me some problems.....

I LOVE yours...................

Did you hand sew it?

I did not hand sew it.  I did the sewing on my machine.  I did use a thick needle, that said it was for Denim, and used thick thread to sew it with.  I think the black velvet may have some advantages to a traditional painting because it is not primed with gesso.  I can imagine that the gesso might cause some issues, as there were a few points when sewing it, where the paint was really thick and the fabric folded over, that I was a bit afraid for the motor of my sewing machine.  But it worked out okay.

One nice thing about sewing the painting was that because it was pretty stiff and the velvet wanted to stick to itself, that it did not need to be pinned very much.  Another technical note is that I managed to put the bag together with out ironing the painting.  I am not a hundred percent sure, but I think the acrylic paints would not have held up well to ironing.  Smiley   (And I didn't want to crush the velvet.) Luckily the painting just kind of folded into place.
