the placemat purse frenzy shows no signs of abating
as usual start with 1 placemat

this one has nice embroidery and tiny beads on one side
placemat- $2.25
lining- lefttover burgundy and grey striped silk from a shirt I made
black nylon webbing straps covered in burgundy cotton, because the nylon webbing doesn't come in burgundy
3 zippers
plastic canvas to stiffen bottom
bag front:

inside zipper pocket in lining.
There is another outside zipper pocket on the back and the top zips closed

So pretty. I never see nice placemats in stores around here.

I have a Cost Plus World Market clearance center near me, where all the placemats and napkins and tablecloths are marked down once, and then there is a 50% off sale going on too (50% off the already marked down price) so I have been going kind of nuts with the super cheap placemats. This one makes a much better bag than it does a placemat, because the plate wouldn't sit flat on top of those seed beads.

Wow not2old4glitter, beautiful bag!  I'll be looking at placemats with a totally new function in mind now!  This is why I love Craftster!

Thanks everyone! This one is probably more of a fall-winter bag but maybe that's why the placemat was on clearance, it's kind of out of season. The placemats are a great quick way to get cute embellishments without doing any handwork. They have embroidery or beads or appliques and it's usually only on one half of the placemat , like it's asking to be folded in half and becomne a bag. Also they are already stiffened and they are 3 layers of fabric, so you can skip the interfacing  you'd normally put in a bag. You could even skip the lining if you didn't want any zipper pockets or anything, since the back of the placemat is  usually a nice fabric too. The super-quickie version of this would just be the placemat and straps and would probably take 10 minutes to make. When I add lining and zippers, it's still under an hour.
I guess in a way I'm  cheating since the true crafty purist would  do embroidery and beading and that stuff by hand. But that would take a long time and I like instant gratification, LOL.

That looks great.
It's my favorite color.
I'm all about some instant gratification.
