Well here is my before picture:  This was actually painted by my grandmother- she is not the greatest artist but I loved the colors.

I don't have a lot of wall space, and don't think I could revamp this so that I would be willing to put it on my wall.  Plus not that many people come to my apartment so who would get to see it after all my hard work.  I tend to like practical things.  And what is more practical than BRACLETS?!!?!

You probably can't tell but these bracelet's are made out of pieces of gourd.  Cut and sand the gourd pieces, drill holes, paint the back and sides, decoupaged bits of the picture on, covered the picture with Galaxy Glass, strung on stretchy string w/ beads, and it's a bracelet.

Then I was inspired by the glass marble bracelets I have seen on Craftster.  I made the marbles but don't have the bracelet forms yet.... pretty but not bracelets yet.

and these extra pieces will probably be made into necklaces

I still have lots of the original picture left so who knows what else I will come up with?

I like this a lot. Great idea and you didn't change your grammy's art, just turned it in to jewelry!

That's a really creative way of transforming a piece of artwork.  I like the originality of your idea.

I was waiting for a big "revamp a piece into something entirely different" post.  I really like it.  And it's even better because it's like having a piece of your grandmother with you when you wear it.  Nice work.

And I may not look at thrift store paintings the same way again.  Hmmm.  More ideas that I don't have time to act on.   Undecided Cheesy

Thats really unique, and seems more respectful to your grandma than painting over her work would have been!
I love them.

When you say "gourd", is that the vegetable?  If so, that's incredibly cool!  Smiley

Thank you all for comments.

Amy UK - yes gourd are a vegtable.  A pumpkin is a gourd - but the kind I craft on are called hard shelled gourd - because when they dry the shells turn hard.  They are great for crafting and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  I love them.

Olga - opps it's Gallery Glass (not galaxy).  It is liquid product used to make stained "glass" designs.  The clear version is great for adding a nice thick shiny surface to things.  This is the first time I have used it so I don't know how well it wears but it sure looks nice.

The Gallery Glass I got from Michaels craft store.
The gourd I get from a couple of gourd farms in Northern California.  Try the California Gourd Society site for resources http://www.calgourd.com/index.htm
Or just Google gourds- you will be amazed at what is out there.

Really great idea and end product and conversation piece.

How did you cut the gourd peices?  Is the Gallery glass smelly?  Like work out side do to the fumes?  I bet the back of the gours is curved nice to fit your wrist.  Good job!

I use a small jigsaw to cut the gourd - but you can use a small hobby saw - exacto has one.  The Gallery Glass has a slight ( I think pleasant) smell - kind of like white glue.

I worked in a school once that had one of those 70's dome-shaped climbing structures in the playground. They planted it with gourds and it was so cool!! Inside all these weird gourds hung down and the outside was really pretty.
