Ok My daughter started her periods today and after talking about recycle/ reduce/reuse, her words not mine LOL.
I asked her about washable pads.
She was very enthusiastic so today I made some complete with knickers for nightime use.
here they are

Ok I started with a pattern fpr full knickers or as she puts it "nanna knickers" and I cut out the pad pieces, I just used a pair of my old flanelette pj pants and 2 layers of toweling.

This is how they ended up

I decided for ease of drying to put in little pockets to hold the front and the back of the pad in place. I laid the pad onto the pants and marked where the pockets needed to be sewn.I did this after I had finished the knickers but next time I will do it before I sew the leg elastic onto them.

these 2 were just to show the size of the pad.

I will let you know how they work out.

well at present her comments were, I feel like I'm wearing a nappy. LOL.

I need to reduce the size of the knickers which I have done in her second pair.

what a fantastic mom you are!  i hope i have that kind of open, healthy relationship with my child when she reaches that stage in her life.

oh yeah, the knickers are a wonderful idea, i love the pockets, that is a great adaptation.

thank you for sharing this project with us, it makes me so happy to know that mothers CAN be welcome in their daughters' lives.

thanks.
I was really surprised that she told me, we have never had a great relationship, I relate better to my boys but I never bonded well with her.
She was so shocked I suppose that she just came running in and says mum I need you NOW.

she had the day off school and I sewed.
I made a second pair that are a little smaller and I added a second crotch peice to slide the pad under. Not sure how it will work out.

She said to me this morning that they were really comffie last night and she felt fine.
I asked her if she would wear them during the day and she said yep sure she'd love to so long as they don't move.

WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOo

I thought she would say no all round.

I am joining the mestrusal cars package swap if I can.

I am making more for her on the weekend.

wow, i am so impressed by both you and your daughter for your openness and environmental-mindedness! it's great to usher your daughter into the cycles of womanhood by supporting her in such a great way while also respecting the cycles of nature and our need to protect them.

and you can tell your daughter that if she thinks those nice soft fabric pads feel like nappies, try the plastic crinkly disposable ones-- yuck! plus, all the cool, crafty women wear fabric pads  Wink

I have noticed that! I had never heard of them before craftster. It would be fun though to go with her to the craft store and pick out cute fabrics (from the $1- I LOVE the $1 bin fabrics!!).
kuruku made some really cute pads for the vagina swap. That would make having your period so much happier and cheerful!
Here are the ones she made for the swap...
