Hi everyone! This is my first challenge, and although I am sooooo intimidated by the amazing entries in this challenge so far, I was so excited I stayed up until 5 am working on my art just to get it posted before I went to bed.  So, a couple weeks ago, I was sifting through the decaying works of art in the back of a used furniture shop here in Japan, and I found this:

It was in a frame, but I removed it for the photo, whoops.  Also, terrible image quality...but no worries, because I saved the good photos for the final product:

I repainted the background a bright blue, added pink fabric flowers from kimono fabric, washed the glass and painted a sort of design overlay on top of it, featuring more lilypads and pink flowers. I left empty spaces in the design on the glass to showcase parts of the original artwork.  (That's a little turtle biting the nymph's tale by the way, framed by the big pink flower). For the Kokeshi dragonflies, I cut and folded origami paper into little kimonos, and added tiny painted heads and black hair, backed by green paper wings to match the lilypads. I attached two of the dragonflies to the original art, and the littlest one to the glass itself, because I like the kind of 3Dish foreground/background effect.

Here are a couple more detail shots, of a Kokeshi dragonfly and a kimono fabric flower:

Thanks so much for looking!

I absolutely love this! The turtle biting it's tail is so adorable, and the background-foreground layering is wonderful! I think this might get my vote.

This is so cute..and a little weird..

I Love It!  Great job!

Everything you added came together really well.

I especially like how you painted on the glass to give it more layers of depth.  And the little dragonfly girls...

Kappa! Yay!

Captain Riley, what does "kappa" mean? As in, the 10th letter of the greek alphabet?

Also, MadelBlue, thanks so much for the compliment...I liked the original, too! I mean, it was really dirty, but aside from that, I liked it's quirkiness, and I couldn't bring myself to do anything to the nymph because of that! But the colors needed a little jolt, so that's what I tried to do.  Wink

Fabulous!

I love that you echoed the actual theme of the artwork rather than covering it up to create your own.
If this was Iron Chef, I'd say you represented the "key ingredient" the best so far!

A Kappa is a mythological Japanese water beast/demon, and is (I believe) what you've got there on your painting.

http://www.pantheon.org/articles/k/kappa.html

The give-away is that weird dot on top of its hair- the kappa is often pictured as having a bowl for the crown of its head (often pictured surrounded by tufts of hair), and must keep said bowl full of water.

Wow! What a great piece. I also love how you kept the original theme intact, yet truly accentuated the key elements that drew you to it in the first place. Good Job- I don't think you need to be nervous about posting entries any more!

Thanks again for the comments guys, I am less nervous about posting now, for sure.

OMG Captain Riley, thank you for the enlightenment...after researching on Wikipedia etc. I definitely believe my creature to be a kappa. AND that makes it so much more interesting than just a funny/cutesy artwork.  I read on there that kappas like to eat small children and to steal people's "life force" by sucking their bowels out!  You wouldn't expect that from a cute little elfin creature like this, now would you?  Of course, I also read that they can be benign and help farmers irrigate their land.  And they love eating cucumbers even more than children!

Now I'm thinking I should change my title to "Cute but Evil Japanese Kappa *with Kokeshi doll dragonflies*" and add a cucumber somewhere in there.  What do you think?

Hi Katie;

I just voted for your beautiful artwork. It would be great if you animate it and make it a cartoon. April told me you will be coming home soon. Can't wait to see you. It has been a very long time and we miss you. I'll keep the Kool-Aid chilled for you.  Grin

Peace,
