Give me a week or two to go absolutely cuckoo.

I found these three pieces of art at a local flea market and bought the trio for $15.  They look like they came off the walls of some long-defunct seaside motel.  Apologies to the original artist, wherever he or she may be!

Since the material was stillin good shape I decided to turn each Beige Beastie into something a little more whimsical.  I had some feathers in my craft cupboard and just kind of made everything up from there on.

Once a lonely little sandpiper. . .. . . .. now a fabulous peacock!

I have NO IDEA what this was. . . . .. . but now it's a playful hedgehog!

Used to be an abstract-y conch thingy. . . .. now an inquisitve snail!

Thanks for looking!  This challenge was so much fun.

Those are really cool!

The middle critter is a horseshoe crab. They are very common in and around Tampa Bay. If my high school biology is correct, they are actually not a crab and are a member of the spider family.

i adore the peacock!

and i must admit that i thought i liked the horseshoe crab as is (though that could just be because i've always admired the general wierdness that is a horseshoe crab) - but once i saw it,  i couldn't resist the cuteness of the hedgehog he turned into.

great job, hercuteness!

Horseshoe crabs have been around a very long time, and this picture very well have been painted using a fossil for a model.

I must say though, as cool as these all are, especially the snail...

It hurts me a little as a psychotically devoted micropaleontologist to think you may have molested a foram.

(Not actually offended, I am being a tad facetious here.  I really like your paintings.)

yes, bless the little foram. although... i had to dig those things out of a big pile of sand with a microscope and tweezers in my oceanography class and after my 100th one i was ready to curse forams to oblivion.

so, i <3 the snail. it isn't microscopic.

and the peacock and the hedgehog are beautiful.

Those are Marushkas- they're not paintings, they're screenprints. Marushka was an art collective in the 1970s with a goal to make affordable art for the masses. They're actually really collectible on EBay and go for a lot of money (like $30-$40)- my friend collects them.

i went to eBay before i started painting and looked up some of marushka's comparable prints.  the ones i saw went for a little more than $5 (the smaller, ocean-themed ones).

at the flea market there was ONE more piece that the lady wanted to sell me. . .she said it was part of this set.  it looked sort of like the shell or horseshoe crab. . .only it had been STUFFED.  someone had made a 3D version of the critter and stuffed it with cotton.

i guess i wasn't the first one to try and "revamp" those prints.

no really.  pretty fun stuff.  i have to say, i think you desecrated a perfectly good horseshoe crab, but the fantastic peacock renders it excusable.

These are great - everyone else here seems to prefer the peacocke, but I'm going to have to swim against the tide and say the hedgehog is my favourite. Who would have thought feathers would have made such good spines? Nice work!

thanks!  i usually HATE using feathers.  they are so messy and they make me sneeze.  there are still fuzzy feather leavings embedded in my carpet.

oh well.  sacrifice to the craft gods.

very well done, they're really cute, i like the hedgehog a lot

i saw the originals and just HAD to comment...my family recently bought a "summer house" (more like a summer cottage...no...summ er shack...summer enclosing of 4 walls?) that we had been renting for awhile, and its filled with lots of awful 60's artwork including very ugly beach-themed art (the house is in western massachusetts...who was she trying to fool with pictures of sand dollars and shells?) basically, that thing you converted to the hedgehog is an ugly piece of artwork hanging in the dining room of our house! ill have to paint over it and make a cuddly cute creature...hmm

i dunno if this post was really necessary of me but i thought it was exciting/funny
