Today is my day off so I made another purse I don't need!!  Cheesy and here 'tis
I started with a straw placemat from World Market and a polka dot napkin from Target

add too much caffeine and some ribbon and whatnot, and you have a purse

materials:
straw placemat
napkin for lining and pocket
nylon webbing straps
striped grosgrain ribbon
zipper
2 vintage suede-covered buttons

back of purse, showing patch pocket with velcro closure and a  button (this button is decorative only, not functional)

top closure with  button and ribbon loop

showing inside zipper pocket in the lining

It's not hard to make. It's kind of similar to the Jordy bag except for the handles. I am not sure I like the big patch pocket on the outside, but I'd probably wreck it if I tried to remove it now so I guess I'll leave it there. The polka dots aren't centered which is bugging me. Haha, anal retentive, moi?  Wink

So it wasn't too difficult sewing through the straw?

Not really, only on the side seams it got a bit thick with 2 layers and I had to kind of mash it under the presser foot. I used a denim needle and didn't break any needles. I'm not sure if it's really straw, or raffia, sisal, or some other kind of plant fiber. It's pretty flexible and floppy, not stiff like a straw basket.

The napkins just jumped out at me because they were right next to the placemats and I have been on a placemat-purse making kick. I should have been using up fabric leftovers from my stash, but Target's got some really cute table linens right now, in designs you can't find at a fabric store. The Isaac Mizrahi big floral ones are very tempting too!
