Here's a purse I made recently. It took about two evenings, but that included hunting for supplies on a Sunday evening.

I had this vision of a black purse with an embroidered pink tree, and I'm happy with how it turned out. It holds all the necessary stuff and even has a little journal pocket.


This is how I made it:

First I cut 2 pieces of black fabric freehand, approximately the shape I wanted the purse to be, pinched them in twice at the top, cut 2 matching pieces of fabric for the lining and some fabric for the handles. I added a pocket and two places for pens. I sewed the lining and added a zipper to it. Then I embroidered the tree and sewed everything together. When I was going to sew the lining to the outer fabric at the top (and sew around the zipper once again), my machine kept jamming so I ended up hand sewing the top seam. The lining is a bit shorter than the outer fabric, so the zipper is somewhat lowered into the top of the purse.
