Ok, I had this idea for a swap...but don't really have the experience (or time!!) to organise it so I'd be happy for someone to take my baby off my hands :-)
The basic idea is that the swap moderator decides on a card size (eg 4"x6"). Then the number of craftsters able to participate is limited only according to topics (eg. if you wanted to limit it to 10 craftsters you'd need 10 "food groups", you might have: soup, finger food, entree, mains, vegetarian, party food, cakes, cookies, dessert and drinks). Each participant gets one of the themes/groups and has to prepare the same number of cards on that topic as there are craftsters (so for this example, they'd need to prepare 10 desserts, or 10 mains or whatever). They should all be different recipes, and it's up to the individual to decorate them according to the theme - anything goes as long as it's the right size. If you've got someone happy to do some extra work, you could even decorate binders or books too. Everything is sent to the moderator, who then makes up 10 packets - each with one main, one dessert etc and sends it out so everyone has a card per course. If it works, perhaps it could be made into a more regular and random thing (ie if Ms Dessert sends in 10 dessert cards one month, then everyone gets an extra dessert)
I figure paper only would cost less?

That sounds like a good idea... but there are different ways to maybe do it so the moderator doesn't have to do all the work, maybe...

Each person sends each of their 10 main course/appetizer/whatever recipes to everybody else... but that's a 37 cent stamp for everybody.

Or each person finds one recipe for each course and then sends their cool new package to ONE person... that's just one 37 cent stamp...

open to all ideas! that's why i put it up here! maybe someone could set up a pen-pal-type recipe swap - like u organise with ur swapee to swap once a month or something, and the monderator just gets it rolling and matches ppl up according to food likes and dislikes or requirements (eg lactose intolerant ppl/veggos)

I would be willing to recipe swap.. it sounds fun! Smiley   But we could do a recipe a month with a particular theme for that month.. and what about cocktail recipes for the 21+ crowd here?

Hmm, a recipe a month sounds fun.

... I could collect those cocktail recipes and wait to use them when I'm 21.

I think I could arrange this, but I'd like a little more input from you guys first.  Here are my thoughts:

September:  Soup
October:  Slow Cooker/Stir Fry/One Dish Meals
November:  Appetizers/Snacks
December:  Cookies/Candy
January:  Cocktails/Beverages
February: Chocolate/Dessert
March:  Ethnic (Irish/Mexican/Polish/etc)
April:  Muffins
May:  Cooking Light (get ready for bathing suit season)
June:  Salad/Vegetarian
July:  Backyard BBQ
August:  Brown Bag (Back to school)/Fun food fact

I think everyone would get a better variety of recipes if I collected them and distributed to each participant.  Nobody would get shorted that way, and everyone who submitted recipe cards would get the same number of recipe cards in return.  For example, if we have 20 participants in one month, you could submit up to 20 of the same recipe card.  Then, you'd receive the same number back.

I was thinking $1 for return postage for each month.  That should cover up to 20 cards or so.  Any extra could be used to help fund international shipments.

By suggesting more than one topic per month, yet similar topics, everyone will know if they want to participate that month.

Another option would be to e-mail me your recipes, which I could collate in Word or Adobe format (your choice) and e-mail back to everyone.  I could even put them into a recipe card format, so all you'd have to do would be is to print them and cut them (4 to a page).  This would be quick and fair, but not nearly as pretty (you'd only get my computer graphics and creativity) or as fun as getting a happy in the mail.

So, speak out everyone.  Let me know what categories you'd like to see added and/or how you'd prefer it to go.  I'd like to get this started for September.  So, once everything is finalized, I'd say signups for each month could be taken 20th-30th of the month prior and recipes should be (e)/mailed by the 5th to be distributed by the 15th.

Thanks for your input.

Hmm!  That sounds pretty good to me... so basically sign up every month and not for a whole year (that is bit of a responsibility), right?  Just making sure I got that right.

I think making multiple copies of the same recipe to send to everyone sounds good.  Though we would only want to make one less than the number of participants.  There's no point sending out 20 when the person who made the recipe could just keep their own. Tongue

It is a bit less work for the hostess if you make one for yourself too.  Especially if there are 20 or so signups.  I could then make identical packets and everyone would get the same packet.

Is everyone OK with the return postage of $1?

Is anyone leaning toward an electronic version of this swap?

The theme-a-month sound great!  We could include holiday recipes during November to Januarywith the month themes b/c there are five-six holidays during those months.

I'm also leaning to the electronic version of the swap since I'll be on the computer typing papers and such for classes.
